Great Chapter in Saga By Ron Fortier This is as yet another action packed adventure taking place in the fictional sci-fi mythology created by Van Allen Plexico call The Shattering. In this mythos, mankind exists in a universe made up of three distinct level of reality; the Above, where dwell gods with amazing powers, the Middle (or for want of a better term, our own universe) made up of we mere mortals and lastly the Below, home to assorted demons and other monstrous creatures. In his galaxy spanning saga, most of the drama results from unexpected interactions between these three levels which tend to lead to cataclysmic results. In one of Plexico’s first books, “Lucien – Dark God’s Homecoming,” we were given a glimpse of this universe long after the old god’s from the Above had been vanquished via an act of betrayal amongst one of their owns. Then, in subsequent titles, Plexico opted to move around to other parts of his mythos and chose to weave stories that for the most part happened in his imagined future. Now, with “Banarak – Storming the Gates,” he takes back in time and spins the fantastic story of the actual birth of the Above gods. The setup is quickly related. In the distant future mankind has launched itself into space hoping to find new worlds to colonize and guarantee the continuation of our species. Almost immediately star-gates are discovered at various points in space which allow us to leap front across the galaxies and soon seven worlds are settled and a burgeoning Empire of Man is about to be established. But just as quickly as the gates were found, they suddenly, without warning, cease functioning and thus seven separate human planets learn they must forge on independent of the others. Thus seven different cultures continue to evolve over the next few decades, each establishing its own unique identity. The only single unifying tradition to remain viable on all seven isolated empires is their common religion; the Church of the Seven Stars. Then, just as mysteriously as they stopped functioning, the star-gates are reactivated by forces unknown. On the human world of Majondra, the military commander Constantine Baranak devises a plan to use the gates to invade and conquer the other six empires thus establishing one cohesive galaxy spanning regime. Aiding him in this audacious scheme are his siblings and his son, Gaius, who also serves as Constantine’s military aide. On the eve of this stellar invasion, Constantine is betrayed and assassinated by a high priest of the church at the same time Majondra comes under attack by a rival empire. It is left to Gaius to fathom how his father’s bold scheme was discovered and who amongst the royal family betrayed them. One of Plexico’s hallmarks is the breakneck speed at which he propels his plot never allowing his reader a moment’s respite as his protagonist is plunged into one amazing adventure after another. He creates unique, alien allies and foes that confront Gaius at every turn until in the end; his family’s very survival depends on his keen insights into both their various natures. Dealing with cosmic forces beyond understanding, Constantine’s son must gamble with the fate of his people to either achieve a bold new future or fail and watch them totally destroyed. “BANARAK – Storming the Gates,” is a space opera thrill ride that never disappoints. If you have never a Van Allen Plexico space adventure, this is clearly the place to start.

And he’s injecting it healthy doses of fantasy with hints of the superhero.I started reading in the middle of his sprawling series with Baranak: Storming the Gates. In it, humans have discovered that the long dormant gates between stars have started functioning again after a long dark age that found Earth and her colonies isolated from each other. The gates, built by a race far older than Homo sapiens, allowed humanity to spread to six other worlds. The story begins with the murder of Constantine Baranak, a general with a plan to reunite the old Terran Empire. Before son Gauis’s eyes, his father is incinerated by a suicidal priest with an incendiary device just as Constantine’s armies are about to fan out across the seven worlds. An emergency meeting of the Baranak family, who all but rule Gaius’s homeworld of Majondra, reveals a traitor in their midst, but not the traitor’s identity. Gaius follows a stranger skulking about the family estate until he accidentally wanders down a “Path,” a connection between dimensions that reveals how the gates between stars worked in the past. Gaius meets Istari, a near immortal alien with title “the Renegade” for opposing his fellow immortals scheme to become gods.Plexico integrates fantasy into a science fiction epic by presenting such things as the Paths as technology older and far more advanced than anything humans have ever seen. Equal parts Game of Thrones and Doctor Who (if not quite so timey wimey), Plexico’s work incorporates gods and pocket universes with equal ease and promises there are even more bizarre things in heaven and Earth (such as they are here). He calls it space opera, and it certainly fits that description. But it hits on fantasy without any part of it becoming supernatural. And it parallels the myths of old, suggesting that maybe the likes of Zeus or Odin weren’t nearly as immortal as legend suggests.

As it went on it just got better and better. This author has a series of books that are in the same universe. I can't wait to read the next one. This is the start of the gods and how they got to be that way. The story is being told by Baranak himself in the future to another person you will find out later.Seriously fantastic I can't wait to read more.

At the end of the 1968 St. Mary's school year, a new sixth grader; Denny, gets transferred in from the public school and challenges Glen immediately. Within weeks Glen and Denny's ordinary lives have turned crazy. People are dying. Mothers are crying and then the boys are gone. Chance and tragedy cast the boys onto the railways of the Hobo Kingdom, a realm which grows more violent and macabre each day. Here killers, rapists and thieves prey on the transients and innocents who venture too close to the tracks. A band of hobos help one boy and an U.S. Marine war veteran the other. Climb aboard; the train is rolling, headed to the unknown world of The Hobo Kingdom, but watch out...there could be blood everywhere. By Rich Dan Biermeier's book, "The Hobo Kingdom: A Chase of Blood on Steel," gives the reader quite a ride. It's an action thriller that just builds and builds. By page two you're introduced to the two main characters: Glen and Denny. Within a chapter or two more, one of the boys' lives is changed forever, and the other's soon follows. Due to tragedy, both are pulled from the normal life of twelve-year-old boys and thrust into a world of adventure, tragedy, betrayal, violence, friendship and loyalty. Riding the rails, they are soon adopted by two groups of Hobos. Taught the Hobo code of ethics and way of life the boys soon abandon their old lives and help in the relentless pursuit of two homicidal maniacs: Two Trains North, a six foot six monster of a man, likes to crush heads and snap necks, while York, a teenage boy, prefers to work up front and close— slitting throats and impaling hearts with his straight-razor and "shiv." Both are very good at what they do, and don't hesitate in their work—leaving dozens of dead bodies up and down the line. Horrified with the carnage and the senseless killing, the two boys, and their new found friends, run the rail from one end of the country to the next in search of the mass murderers. Unfortunately, the line between the pursuer and the pursued often becomes blurred. Who will be next? Maybe Denny and Glen will "get theirs" in the end. Who can tell? I certainly won't. So, if you're not the squeamish type and you like a non-stop heart pounder every now and then, try this one on for size. It just may fit. It did me and quite well thank you. Nice work Mr. Dan. Now, hurry up and no dawdling with the follow-up. You hear!I'd rather not have to call on Two Trains or York and have you sent—"westbound."

What he does offer us Is a sample of how young at heart he is an dhow much he knows about the manner in which young lads function and think – and a lot about the old tradition of hobos who ride the trains as homeless precursors to the legions of homeless today.Dan’s book embraces the coming of age genre and as such it is very appropriate for young adults struggling through the identity crises – and joys – of walking that bridge between childhood and adulthood. The other aspect that makes this book such a pleasure to read is the use of the time frame when railroads played a major part of our country’s transportation of both people and goods. Dan’s manner of looking at the scenery suggests strongly that he is a Midwesterner, about as solid a picture of America in the ‘old days’ before Internet disrupted our interaction. The synopsis of the story is well written and will seduce the reader; ‘At the end of the 1968 St. Mary's school year, a new sixth grader, Denny, transfers in from the public school and challenges Glen immediately. Within days Glen and Denny's lives turn crazy. A band of hobos help one boy and a U.S. marine war vet the other. Can the railroad gangsters be stopped? Join a group of vigilante hobos who vow to halt the chaos and avenge the victims in this 'Chase of Blood on Steel'. Their goal to bring order back to the railways and safety to those along the tracks. But what about the boys?’Adventure, warm relationships, and the fine description of the hobos on the trains propel this adventure tail along the tracks with the speed of the old trains. For entertainment and memory cues, Try Dan’s new venture into writing. Grady Harp, January 16

By asineth This book is not like anything I have ever read, it does not remind me of anything (I have lately found this to be a super rare trait). It is fast paced, the characters and their relationships (good and bad) are amazing well developed and very richly created. The story, at times a bit scattered, is interesting and unique -and makes you want to keep reading. The lingo took a little getting used to, but it felt natural and really added depth and authenticity to the characters and the world Dan Biermeier created. Mostly dialogue, the characters' banter is entertaining and keeps the momentum of the plot moving forward.I'm excited for more books in the series, but a little worried as that means none of the survivors from this book are necessarily safe. There was a lot of blood in this book, sometimes the plot veering shockingly off from where you thought it was going to go. But believably so, not just "twists for the sake of twists". Rarely have I found a book that was so original and so enjoyable. What I REALLY want is for some studio to pick this up as a new tv series, because it would be outstanding (if they could find actors good enough to master the specific dialogue).I received this book as part of the goodreads giveaways program.

There are 180 puzzles in this book, which is the size of a large coloring book. The print is large also, which I prefer. Hours of fun to keep your mind sharp. (I've done about 40 of these books - this book had a lot of words not used very often. This was a really fun book. Good - newer - puzzles.)

To Tame A Wild Stallion (Gunslinger's Destiny Book 2), by E. K. Knef

About the Author I've always loved the western genre since I was a small child. Each Christmas I would beg Santa for my favorite plastic cowboy and his appropriate horse. And I amassed quite a collection. I started writing western stories when I was thirteen years old, seated at an old Royal typewriter in front of a window overlooking my backyard. From there I would envision my favorite western heroes getting into all sorts of trouble and I was thrilled to put their stories to paper throughout my summer vacations. The library became my favorite haunt. I brought scores of westerns home and read them far into the night, escaping to a simpler time when life was more exciting to my eyes. Zane Grey became my favorite western author and I read every book that he had published. And loved every single one of them. I hope that I have captured a small essence of his spirit in my Gunslinger's Destiny series. And I hope you enjoy reading my stories as much as I have enjoyed writing them. — E. K. Knef

I loved the gun battles between Reason and Cole, especially the one where Cole returns to the Stirrup C, and the other at the water hole. Liked the tension between Reason, Cole, Rachel and Sally. A fast-paced story with total surprises throughout and an equally surprising ending. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Can't wait to read further novels from this author.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. BEGINNER LEVEL OR FOR KIDS By mcc As you can see from the sample page, these puzzles have two or three letters already provided. I was hoping this was true on only the first few puzzles, but it's true for every single puzzle. Thus, the puzzles wind up being too easy to solve and not challenging. It should have been described as "Beginner" or "Easy". This publication would be fine for kids or beginners. Also, too bad it is not spiral bound, which would have eliminated the problem of words running into the inner edges of the page almost hiding the last letter or two.Over all, I rated this at 3-STARS, primarily because the product description was inadequate regarding the "easy" or "beginner" thing.

Crytograms, Volume 1: 285 Puzzles - Meh, not so great, just ok By Waicool Crytograms, Volume 1: 285 Puzzles - It's OK - I purchase crytogram puzzle books for mom every month, I probably bought a couple of dozen of those listed on amazon. This book just arrived and It's ok, I bought both Vol 1 and Vol 2 together so my review is the same for each. the paper will take pen or pencil fairly well as it feels like a heavy newsprint stock paper bound in a softcover glued binding. The letters are smaller than desired and appear to be about 10pt font size, not the easiest to work with. Every puzzle shows several letter answers so it's probably too easy for mom. It'll work and this one is less expensive than most but there are better products out there. Meh

So if you are a fan (I'm assuming you are if you are buying the product) then that's great! However, the actual dates on the calendar are very small and there is NO space to write any details or notes. It's basically just a list of numbers. I was disappointed with this, because I really need the space to write.

By Sal My wife saw this calendar at Barnes and Noble and she had to have it. She loves the simple, but cute animals that Liz Climo draws. Each comic makes you smile. The calendar isn't meant for writing your social events on, it is more for telling what day it is and adding a little humor to your day. Overall, my wife is in love with this calendar and I definitely recommend it to brighten up any office.
