If it was not a Mafia hit, then who else could have done it? And why? These are the questions I’ve pursued in the many years I’ve covered Susan Berman’s murder, looking for evidence, clues, and the who, what, and whys of the case. The book also looks into who had motive, means, and opportunity. It invariably comes back to one person: Susan’s old friend Robert Durst.In my research, I got to know Susan, an author and screenwriter. I drove the route from her Las Vegas childhood home to her final house in Benedict Canyon. I visited the restaurants and bistros she frequented in the Beverly Hills town she loved and called home during the final seventeen years of her life. I walked through the Las Vegas house on South Sixth Street where she lived with her parents during her first twelve years. It was a bright, cheerful house. I imagined her as a child, running down the long hallway into the welcoming arms of the father she adored.I went to the University of California, Berkeley campus where Susan got her master’s degree in journalism and where protests against the war in Vietnam were rampant. Susan made lifelong friends while attending Berkeley—many in the writing world who later tossed work her way.I went to her home in Benedict Canyon where she was murdered. I stood in front of her house on the same path her killer walked before ending her life.And, finally, I visited the Home of Peace cemetery in East Los Angeles where Susan’s body is entombed in a marble wall alongside her mother, father, and uncle. A recent visitor had left flowers in budvases, one on either side of Susan’s shiny-brass headstone. It is where family and friends waited patiently for Robert Durst to arrive, but he didn’t show for the funeral of his old friend.Susan’s murder was one of three Durst was accused of committing since 1982. At the LAPD’s Robbery- Homicide Division, her murder was a cold case. But it was hardly over. Police began closing in on Robert Durst. It came to a head on an early spring evening when a visitor to New Orleans casually enjoyed a meal at Chef Emeril Lagasse’s NOLA restaurant on St. Louis Street.But this was no ordinary tourist. It was multi-millionaire Robert Durst, heir to a New York City real estate fortune, seemingly on the run in anticipation of being arrested for the murder of his one-time confidant and best friend, Susan Berman. Susan was no ordinary person either. By Jan Genovese Years ago I had read a book by Susan Berman called Easy Street. In it she wrote about her childhood in Las Vegas with her dynamic father and passive mother where she lived like a queen. She never knew her father was a Jewish mobster. She had a fabulous, luxurious existence and never questioned any of it! I don't think she ever got over the shock of learning that her beloved dad was a ruthless murderer with all sorts of questionable cronies who helped him run his various enterprises. I didn't really like Susan Berman. She sounded like such a pampered, spoiled brat! So I was shocked just recently to discover this book by Cathy Scott about the murder (execution style) of Susan Berman in California! Her friends' descriptions of Susan by themselves make the book worth reading. She was an extremely complicated, sometimes misunderstood, mess of contradictions. I was surprised to learn she was a very competent writer herself. Her death? Well, I have my theories about who killed her and so will you.

Amazing how it is interwoven with another highly publicized figure...who knows what happened By Ms. Goose This book made me sad. Susan had quite an interesting life starting with the fact she was the daughter of a mob member. She lost her daddy and mom too early and was left quite of wondering in life alone. She has the misfortune of hooking up with a very disturbed millionaire who became her best friend - that is another well publicized counterpart to this story. All interweaves together. She lived and died her life alone. Sad.

Barratt Went into this looking for a book that broke down the fundamentals of communication, offering tips, specifics, examples and stories of how to integrate "communication mastery" into both personal and professional life. After reading half way through the book, I'm not going to even finish the book as there is very little value. By Alastair McKinley You will never be regarded as a person if you don't know how to communicate as conveying yourself to others physically, emotionally, mentally are forms of communication. The benefits of communication was well emphasized on this book and with its 50 tips to become an effective communicator definitely one would be able to have good communication skills and can add extra edge to one's personalities. I myself needed to become an proficient communicator since my job entails me to, I currently worked as a customer support specialist and my daily routine is talking to people to help them sort out their problems and I wouldn't stand for years in my job if I haven't been able to interact with people in a correct or right manner. Not only it is a must in one's profession it also strengthens relationship with family, friends and love ones, this book provided all the necessities needed to enhance ones potential to become an effective communicator, I appreciate how Parker discussed this kind of subject that we use in our lives and yet we don't give attention to if we need it to be enhanced or not, as knowing how to improved how you communicate actually improved oneself basically in almost all aspect of life. I find this book very informative and helpful.

Along the way, it tells a surprisingly intelligent, carefully plotted story.The prologue to Enemy of Mine begins with a nightmare (always a bad start to a novel) as Pike Logan dreams about the murder of his wife and child four years earlier. The main story begins with the assassination of an investigator who had gathered evidence implicating the Syrian government and Hezbollah in the 2005 death of Lebanon's prime minister. The assassin (a freelance terrorist known as the Ghost) then accepts an assignment to kill the American envoy to upcoming peace negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and Israel. A competing freelance assassin, an American named Lucas Kane but known by the code name Infidel, turns up to add spice to the plot. Pike encountered Infidel in One Rough Man.Pike's ultimate mission, and that of the counter-terrorism Taskforce to which he is assigned, is to prevent the envoy's assassination. When they aren't with Pike, other members of the Taskforce come into focus, particularly Jennifer, an anthropologist who kicks butt when she isn't educating the other Taskforce members about world history. Knuckles and Decoy will also be familiar to series fans, while a new guy named Brett joins the team. Pike and Jennifer, however, are the only characters who gain new depth in this novel.Occasionally the story spotlights Col. Kurt Hale, who commands the Taskforce from Washington D.C. Hale sits on an oversight committee that answers to the president (the only elected official on the committee). Since the Taskforce operates "outside the bounds of U.S. law" (it doesn't notify Congress or obtain Congressional approval before kidnapping or assassinating its targets), Hale and Pike and everyone else on the Taskforce, as well as the president and everyone on the oversight committee, is by definition a criminal. A reader needs to accept this unlikely premise (at least, one would hope it's unlikely) in order to enjoy the story. Since modern thrillers are almost always built on unlikely foundations, I rolled with it.The main plot is cunning, bringing to mind (without overtly stating) the familiar Arabic proverb, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." Of course, sometimes the enemy of your enemy is also your enemy. A couple of assassination schemes that unfold during the course of the novel are quite clever. The last quarter of the novel, after the main plot has wound down, seems like padding but it's enjoyable padding. A key subplot depends upon a wildly improbable coincidence that is easily forgiven since it drives the action at the end of the novel.The story moves at a brisk pace. Brad Taylor's prose is straightforward but Enemy of Mine is about story, not style. The story is entertaining, although some events are predictable. Pike gets into bar fights to prove what a tough guy he is, just as he did in The Callsign. He risks his team and his cover to save a girl he doesn't know, after being ordered to cease operations, simultaneously proving his heroism and independence. In fact, Pike frequently disregards orders and never suffers any consequences because he always turns out to be right. Knuckles gives us the usual detailed description of the care a sniper takes to fire an accurate long-distance shot. The oversight committee is predictably bureaucratic in its refusal to trust the judgment of Taskforce members in the field. None of these scenes are bad, but they've all been done many times before.Taylor has a more nuanced view of the world than some action novelists. He acknowledges that terrorists can be intelligent, that they do not share a unified ideology, and that the differing motivations of terrorist organizations lead them to pursue conflicting goals. Although Pike obviously disagrees with it, Taylor presents the Lebanese perspective on Hezbollah and the 2006 war with refreshing honesty, while Hale recognizes that there is a difference between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. Unlike most action novel heroes, Pike knows that using torture as an interrogation technique is more likely to produce lies than truth. And unlike the vigilante "heroes" that populate so many thrillers, Pike has moral reservations about revenge killing, creating a dilemma when he experiences an overwhelming desire for revenge.In short, this is an impressive action novel with a solid plot that reflects an unusually sophisticated worldview. On top of that, it's fun.

The characters were a less well-developed in this installment, even with Pike exhibiting more "normal" human characteristics/emotions. Furthermore the characters keep breaking Task Force rules, seemingly without consequence. Again, as the title of review states, this book is good, but not great.

There are two antagonists-- called the Ghost and the Infidel-- and I feel the author did not adequately set up the dynamics of their role in the plot. I was into the second half of the book before things kind of sorted themselves out. There is plenty of action and the last 100 pages were good fun. I just had to force myself to get there.

35 of 36 people found the following review helpful. This is heavy! By Lucy Cat I was born in the gap between the theatrical release of Back to the Future I and II. My parents (bless them!) wasted no time exposing me to this astounding and timeless series at the age of 7. I was, thenceforth, a science fiction super fan and rank BTTF among my all-time favorite pieces of pop culture across all formats. Upon the 30th anniversary of its release I started scouring the internet for signs of historical ephemera. I was delighted and promptly ordered this tome, eagerly awaiting its timely October 21th arrival.The book itself is designed and bound quite nicely, I am quite picky about these things. My copy arrived shrink wrapped and in generally good condition (there's a slight tear in the cover material on the back cover due to poor packing material).The interior pages are glossy, printed on nice stock paper and all 224 pages are stocked full of wonderful photos, prints of scripts, storyboards, concept art and handwritten production notes. There are also several prop replicas (see my photos) which have been included, peppered along throughout the book. As other reviewers have mentioned, the prop replicas are a very, very cool addition to the book in itself; however, the method in which they are affixed to the pages was very irritating. In some cases, a thick peel-able backing glue was used which left a round "oil stain" on either the book page, the prop or both. In other cases, a more treacherous and near-impossible to remove tape was used which caused some tearing/blemishing of the book page, the prop or both. I ended removing all of the props and storing them in an 8 x 10 envelope for safekeeping.Here is a list of all the included prop replicas:- Save the Clock Tower Flyer (with Jennifer's number on the back)- Doc's hand drawn Flux Capacitor schematic- Marty's pink tardy slip (reason for being late: slacker)- Marty and sibling color photo (holographic: holding it at an angle makes Marty's brother and sister disappear!)- "Do Not Open Until 1985" (The letter that could have potentially disrupted the space-time continuum)- Lorraine and George's Enchantment Under the Sea Dance photo- Jaws 19 Movie Poster (Directed by Max Spielberg)- Receipt from 2015 for the purchase of the antique Sports Amanac- Western Union letter from Doc c. 1885- A "Biff" dollar bill from the alternate 1985- "A Match Made in Space" by George McFly dust jacket cover- Portrait of Doc and Marty in front of the future clock tower clock c. 1885The content/writing of the book is just marvelous and will be an absolute thrill for even casual fans (if they even exist). I have been enjoying reading it all day and have been driving my friends and family bonkers popping up with new trivia about the series every 5 minutes. All three movies are covered, and attention is given to the Universal Studios ride (with its accompanying mini-movie) and the animated television series.All-in-all this is a real treat and I'm delighted to add it to my BTTF collection. My tremendous appreciation and gratitude for everyone involved in bringing this project to the fans. Highly recommended!

Gottwald wow. as a lifelong BTTF trilogy fan, i'm more than blown away by this volume. year after year, we see fans of larger franchises like star wars and star trek and the lord of the rings and harry potter get boatloads of goodies; books, photo books, merchandise, etc etc. relatively nothing for us back to the future devotes.fortunately, this is a banner year for the trilogy. as i type this, tomorrow, october 21, 2015 is when marty and doc show up in the future hill valley of BTTF part II. which means there has been a merchandise bonanza, a crown jewel of which is this very book.i've gone through it twice since it arrived this morning, and let me tell you; if you're a BTTF fan and you think you've seen it all, think again. there is an AMAZING amount of photos and concept art from the entire trilogy. and don't be fooled by the title "visual history" — it's not just all pretty pictures. the text is detailed and in chronological shooting order, much like the making of star wars and indiana jones books.aside from all the rare and unseen delorean time machine art and photos, the personal highlight for me is the crazy plethora of eric stoltz as marty material. they shot with him for FIVE WEEKS before michael j. fox took over, and this book accounts for every single one of the those weeks, in order, with photos to back it up.the only reason i cannot grant this lovely, well-worth-the-wait tome a five star rating is the way the ephemera is handled inside. like many other such visual history books, there are some odds and ends, re-creations of props and so forth. these are quite cool—it's pretty hard to beat the lenticular postcard photo of marty with his siblings; tilt it in the light and they disappear!! but unlike these other books (such as the alien one) which house these tiny delicate treasures in slick archival envelopes and pouches, this BTTF book has them stuck to the pages with "elephant snot" (a form of temporary adhesive). this is done inconsistently and makes the book a real pain to read.fortunately it's not terribly hard to remove all these items and put them in a separate envelope, as i did. sometimes the adhesive damages the paper, sometimes it only leaves a stain. but it at least makes the thing readable.so do yourself a favor if you're a fan and PICK THIS THING UP. it's terrific.

By boxelder i don't typically write amazon reviews. but if you like back to the future, you won't like this book. by 'like', i mean you've seen it twice and enjoyed it. if you 'love' back to the future, and you've seen it countless times... this is the book for you. this is a book designed for fans. it's an absolute gift and a treat.if you think you've learned everything you need to know about BTTF, you don't. this book -- mind you, i've only gotten through the first half -- has so much information. it's a coffee table book, it has dozens of photographs. but this book is full of text. and it isn't just "they wrote it and made it and wow, how cool is that!" it offers an in-depth look at its development via its scripts, and its filming through detailed weekly shooting schedules. that's right. you get a play by play on when, where, how, and in some instances, on what day they shot your favorite scenes. it's candid, too: we learn a lot about stolz's firing, sheinberg's proposals for changing the title, and glover being a real pain on set.this book, at least the first printing i'd imagine, comes with an unbelievable amount of memorabilia. it too is an absolute treasure. while another review took away a star for the way they're placed inside the book, i can't bring myself to do something like that. certainly they get in the way a little while you're trying to read, but i can't even complain. it has a save the clocktower flier. and jennifer's handwritten "i love you!" on the back. just like the film, it rewards your attention. i can't praise it enough.this is the definitive written companion to this trilogy. it is everything fans could ask for and more. it's far too much for a casual fan. but if you are a hardcore BTTF fan, it goes without saying that you should buy this, without hesitation, right now. you're a fan that probably rolls their eyes every time they hear the "bob gale reads his dad's yearbook" story. well, there's more. did you know gale/zemeckis had ideas for the film as far back as 1975? i didn't. and isn't that enough for you to buy this RIGHT NOW? buy it buy it buy it!! thank you to the writers of this book for making the best BTTF book ever! as lorraine might say, "it's an absolute dream!"

Musings on "Musicals" By enubrius I don't know quite WHAT to make of this.I can tell you that, being from DK it is lushly illustrated and continually fascinating... BUTA) It is in NO WAY the "definitive" ANYTHING about musicalsB) While it is a plus that the book treats film musicals as well as stage, the choices are...C) Well, let's say questionable;D) Of course the book treats many, possibly ALL the milestones of musicals... but superficially ANDE) the selection of other musicals it treats with full on entries as opposed to those it lists in the back of the book, is arbitrary at best.(enough with the Letters) Why, for instance, does a pleasant, albeit mediocre, musical like "Kismet" get a two-page spread while the brilliant "City of Angels" gets short shrift? Why do the authors recognize Carlolyn Leigh & Moose Charlap as songwriters for 1954's "Peter Pan" and not Comden/Greene/Styne who contributed almost 1/2 the score?And WHY do they illustrate virtually all the stage musicals with pictures from the (often horrible) film versions (Yes, I mean "Mame"!)In short: Not only isn't it DEFINITIVE, only a completist like me will probably find it necessary!

Kregarman While by no means "The Definitive Illustrated Story" of the musical, this is a dandy coffee table book. There are marvelous illustrations and interesting short text. The book is heavy, has a great cover and and book cover. It is well bound and opens flat so that whatever page you turn to stays exposed. Movie musicals are included and well covered. The last musical covered is the 2014 film "Into the Woods". There is no seperate listing for the staged version, however.For the right person this would make a very nice gift.

Having worked in theatre for almost 40 years only one of my shows was even briefly mentioned. The main problem is that this book tries to be all things to all people. A compendium of Movie Musicals as well as Stage Shows. Off Broadway is almost ignored with some exceptions. It is lavishly illustrated , more often than not with pictures from the film versions. Text is rather small . Still a great coffee table book and gift for the musical lover in your life.

This book is a guide to writing by Henry James, OM (15 April 1843 – 28 February 1916), an American writer who spent most of his writing career in Britain. He is regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He was the son of Henry James, Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. His method of writing from a character’s point of view allowed him to explore issues related to consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. His imaginative use of point of view, interior monologue and unreliable narrators brought a new depth to narrative fiction. James contributed significantly to literary criticism, particularly in his insistence that writers be allowed the greatest possible freedom in presenting their view of the world. James claimed that a text must first and foremost be realistic and contain a representation of life that is recognisable to its readers. Good novels, to James, show life in action and are, most importantly, interesting. In addition to his voluminous works of fiction he published articles and books of travel, biography, autobiography, and criticism, and wrote plays. James alternated between America and Europe for the first twenty years of his life; eventually he settled in England, becoming a British subject in 1915, one year before his death. James was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912, and 1916.

About the Author Troy is a former sports agent who grew up in a small town in Texas. He left home to run track at the collegiate level but admits that he realized his freshman year he was only a stud in one county but he was no longer in that county. He figured if "he couldn't beat 'em, he could manage 'em." He has traveled four continents and over 40 countries representing Olympic athletes and world champions. A former sports reporter and magazine columnist, he loves to convey a story. Eventually, Troy gave up sports management claiming 40 weeks of travel a year was "going to keep me single, and Texas had too many beautiful women for that to happen." He continued to act as consultant for events and federations but his creative side began to take over. Perhaps it was in his blood, Troy is distantly related to another author named John Grisham. He did eventually meet Debbie Arzola, a former national class distance runner and they married in 2005. They have a son, Joseph and two dogs. Troy is also a songwriter, history fan and amateur genealogist.

I felt like I was watching a movie.The author does a good job twisting the plot with red herrings and subliminal run of the mill plot but will totally caught me off guard with ever changing endings. Great job.One small detail was the book had a few run on sentences and misspellings but still rates 5 stars.

70 of 72 people found the following review helpful. A fun read By KBieb I really enjoyed reading this book from Tom Barber. It had plenty of action, likable heroes and detestable villains. There were some events that were pretty far-fetched but saying that about a book in this genre is like saying that a handful of trail-mix has some nuts. Duh, right? There were a few times when something was just a little too coincidental or when after someone did something I wondered "why didn't they just do X" but it never really kept me from enjoying the story. The action was fast-paced but never got overwhelming. I was kept interested and entertained and that is all that I really ask from books like this.Like most other self-published books this one has some grammatical issues. Thankfully, they were kept to a minimum here though and were never too much of a distraction. One unusual thing that I noticed was a odd tense thing that the author did with the verbs "sat" and "stood". For example, "A fat man in a beige suit was stood the other side of him." I assume it has something to do with his Australian/English upbringing but I have never encountered it before.Nine Lives was a fast and fun read and I finished it in just a few sessions. I recommend it for fans of action-based police stories. I borrowed this book from the Kindle Owner's Lending Library. I already own his next two books in the Sam Archer series and I am looking forward to reading them.Hey, one thing though, only "Reacher can say nothing" and make it work from now on. ;)

We are introduced to the young blonde policeman as he gets his first major action in the Armed Response Unit. A terrorist is trying to impress his bigwig drug cartel leading uncle by sending 8 suicide bombers into London on New Year's Eve.I found this to be an exciting roller coaster ride. The tension and chase was always ramped up with the discovery of clues for the next terrorist to apprehend. I think this is a great start to a series of books. The author says he wants his stories to be like action packed films and he does a good job of it here.If I was a criminal mastermind, I'd time everything to go off at once. But then it would be a short book. Bang. The End

True to the countdown theme that pervades the pages of this book, the tension steadily builds as the clock ticks down to midnight. Despite being a trifle hackneyed in characterizations, Nine Lives is an action-filled, classic style "heroic good guys vs. cold-hearted bad guys" book that reads as if watching it on film. It is quick and vivid and seamlessly flows from scene to scene as Barber latches on and never lets his reader go.When UK and US government agencies band together in a joint venture to stop a series of terrorist attacks upon the citizens of London, the continuous play of action and suspense is quite realistic and well presented, and I, for one, found the ending to be particularly satisfying. This book is most entertaining and I happily anticipate reading more of the Sam Archer series.
