Admittedly, it has been a while since I have read a post-apocalyptic adventure series, but author Mark King drew me in with his great story-telling skills, fantasy and some brilliant characters. I was so hooked I went straight on to read the sequel, Doom!In a world, not as we know it, but only as Daniel and future generations know, we realise that mankind is isolated in small villages, left only alive to ‘farm’ themselves ready for what they believe will be a time for rest and rewards in the ‘Achievement Centre’, which they are due to attend after their fortieth birthday. This is a world, unlike anything we know now, where humans go back to basics, with no reminders of the past, and a world run by other beings: the Over-Seers!The story gives the reader a true sense of what it is like to be Daniel, describing his home life, daily routines and reactions perfectly. There is no holding back from description when it comes to Mark King‘s terrific writing. The reader is truly drawn in, feeling every moment as Daniel does.Daniel is a great, young character, living in a hut with his family, and being able to live off the land, felling trees with his father, in order to trade for food. They are living a relatively comfortable life given the circumstances, aside from the usual lack of sanitary conditions and few clothes, etc. After all, this is all Daniel has ever known.However, after celebrations of a friend departing to the Achievement Centre, Daniel and his young friends decide to wander whilst playing a game. During this turn of events, Daniel discovers something so incredibly horrifying about the Over-Seers and the future of his human friends! Even more terrifyingly, he is found out, and now has no choice but to run for his life throughout the desolate lands, for he simply cannot return to his village and safe haven of his family.Not only does he fear the Over-Seers, and the prospect that they could attack his family if they are aware of just who he is, he has to outrun human hunters and the terrifying, ground-trembling Triclops! His insubordinate and mischievous actions have landed him in a horror he has never known. His only slight relief comes when he meets survivors Gwendolyn and Mary, who work with him in an attempt to save humanity!Initially, Frenzy was a story I would have recommended to 11+ readers, however after learning the secret as Daniel did, and the sheer shock, horror and gore I quickly changed my mind. Frenzy, however is an exceptional read, easy to follow, yet at a nice, quick pace for the adventure it holds. You will be hooked! I would advise it for readers certainly 14yrs+.

By Avi It's a real fast pace action adventure with plenty of twists and turns as the three lead characters in Daniel, Gwendolyn and Mary are forced onto a quest to save their lives. Portray of each character, the scene details were great. I was able to picture scene in the book; may be one day I will see a movie made for this one...

The book is written for beginners and, although it caters for educators, it was very useful and interesting for me as a parent.

There are tons of projects with a good range of difficulty. I believe it would be a great book for any kid (or adult!) who likes 'tinkering' and building random projects. There are very detailed descriptions of the projects to explain how everything works, and how it relates to the real world.One thing to note, is that I was expecting a bit more pictures, and less words. If purchasing for a younger child, just know that they will likely need some adult assistance with the projects.The one negative comment I have is in the quality of the print. The book I received is completely misshapen. The Right side edge is roughly a quarter of an inch larger than the left side. The printing on EVERY page is crooked, including the cover. It's like it was printed in the basement with consumer level equipment. Or the pages were cut out by a child. That's the only reason I've deducted 1 star from my review.... Although I'm still not convinced it's worth subtracting an entire star. But definitely worth noting.Would this stop me from purchasing the book? Not at all. It's the quality of the content that is really important. But for the price... I'd expect better quality from the publisher.

Not A Western By Charles Wheeler On the dust cover of the first printing of this book in 1922 it had these words in bold letters, NOT A WESTERN, as if to warn the potential buyer what they would be getting was not the usual Zane Grey fare, and most likely contributed to the low sales of the book. Harpers had no faith in this book, nor did ZG's wife, Dolly, who had urged him not to write it. But this was a book he HAD to write. He felt enormous sympathy for the returning soldier from WW1 and how they were treated medically and emotionally, especially those who returned from the battle field after the first rush of excitement and jubilation the first one's received. Those later returnees were offered no parades, no notice at all, becoming almost victims of the war. Added to this was Zane Grey's hatred of the way society was changing, particularly the morals and the general conduct he saw being displayed by the young women of the day--"The Roaring Twenties" we call it today. This is his protest against that age or time as seen through the eyes of a returning veteran, who does not have long to live. And yes, a lot of what he was protesting against, is still with us today. We never seem to learn as a society; history repeats itself. This book may seem dated, the use of language and its descriptive qualities have changed somewhat, but all in all this book does a good job in depicting what was happening in the country following WW1. The Day of the Beast will never be one of ZG's big sellers, and for years the ending left me wondering if he actually wrote the book this way; but I have come to know more about him as a person through my study of him as a writer and can now see what he was trying to say with this book. If you read this book for what it was intended, then you will not be disappointed. It is NOT A WESTERN, but a very readable and enjoyable book exposing what the author believed was grievous to society then, and by the way even today.

After fighting to protect the U.S. homes and females, he finds values radically changed. Gives a good look at the sudden culture changes.

This could be true now, To think this was written about 1920 is amazing it just goes to show how people haven't changed. The story is about a young man who returns from WW1 after being in battle for 3 years many battle scars and emotional wounds. Coming home was a dream that turned into a nightmare. It was written in ZG great style but it is not a western, but I really enjoyed it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a carefully crafted narrative sure to thrill sci-fi audiences By Historybuff1066 Officers Hall and Markov are unwittingly cast into a web of conspiracy when a man in a convenience store viscously attacks a police officer in a zombie-like manner. Upon diagnosis, the first victim of an impending outbreak appears to be suffering from a brain tumor-like substance with the ability to take over it’s host’s nervous system and speak to its host as a voice dubbed “the Other.” An autopsy is conducted of “Patient Zero” with an emphasis on his abnormal brain tissue from which the doctors draw a sample. The doctor in charge of the autopsy clumsily exposes himself to the pathogen, and thus starts the beginning of the spread. The story of the zombie-man reaches none other than Fox News, who reports the strange occurrence with a variety of questionable authorities as their guests. The scene is reminiscent of the real world incident in which one homeless man attacked another in Florida a few years ago. Except in this story, the pathogen is real, and the attack is but the beginning of an outbreak the protagonists are not entirely prepared to handle—an outbreak surmised to have arrived from outer space.The story includes a large array of peripheral characters who are all intriguing and developed as archetypes of what one might normally find in a police station, a hospital, or office building. They are all convincing in their manners and each contributes to the story meaningfully and they help move the story along effectively and engagingly. Schmidt’s writing reads much like a John Grisham novel, but he asserts his own particular writing style skillfully to the betterment of the novel. His attention to a minutia of details paints a clear picture of every setting, leading the reader carefully into twists and turns in the story and giving a sense of closeness with the characters, as if the reader were truly there.Symbiote is a carefully crafted narrative sure to thrill sci-fi audiences worldwide. Schmidt takes readers from San Francisco to Oregon during the the nail-bitting evolution of the story and offers relentless action along the way. As a fan of sci-fi novels, I thoroughly enjoyed Schmidt’s characters and settings, as well as his ability to deliver his plot in an organized, easy to follow manner. This story would be an engaging read for young adults interested in the sci-fi genre, as well as adults. There is mild graphic language, so parental guidance is recommended.

Neil Meriwether is an unassuming person until he hears a voice that he calls "The Other'. At that point, he turns into a maniac with incredible strength. Time for capture and contain of Neil to determine the cause of his actions. Finally, he is subdued and a slide of his brain tissue is obtained.Detective Karen Hall and her boss, Detective Yuri Markot are assigned the case. The chase is on, for sure.An increase of appetite, green eyes and increased strength are signs that the parasite is within a host. And, the ones with the "parasite" are a force to be reckoned with by all that come in contact with them. Could this parasite be something from the Aliens? Hang on to your seat for the rest of the story!This story shows the tightness of the "Blue Line" at all costs. The autopsy scene is one that will stay with me for awhile. A most poignant ending for one intrepid detective and also shows that perhaps all was not "lost" by another. And, the epilogue does a wonderful job in tidying up a few loose ends.Most highly recommended.

A book that doesn't take itself too serious at times, but can instantly bring a somber cloud over your head the next. The tale of a young man searching for his loved ones may come off as cliche, yet with a touch of unique wordplay this book breathes a bit of fresh air into the fantasy genre. I hadn't picked up a book in quite some time before finding myself captivated by this one. Hilarious yet "deadly" serious at times, this book is a perfect mixture of tones. While there is room for growth, one can say this is a near perfect first step for the author.

Rough around the edges but a unique story is there By Austyn Barbarin Although a bit rough with the grammar (although I know not everyone is a master editor), the story in this novel is a unique foray into a fantastical world. Complex, diverse characters, a story of family bonds (chosen and blood) and a bit of magic thrown in. I am sure if this author kept working at it (like in the second and third books!) this story would be even more epic. I really liked the conversational nature of the work, and it was cool to see characters I could relate to that did not succumb to typical stereotypes. The story clearly isn't over, and I would love to see where all of these characters end up. Keep it coming Mr. Martin!

By grammy1 Seriously, Book 10 and I am just as excited to get back into The Project world after reading the first book in this series. Alex Lukeman has still whetted my appetite for this fast paced political intrigue series, with a group attached to the White House as the ‘hear no see no’ for the American President Rice. The counter terrorist group is neatly run by Elizabeth Harker.She had brought together a team consisting of Nick Carter, Selena O’Connor, Ronnie Peete, and of course her right hand computer hacker extraordinaire Stephanie Willets. One of our gang Lamont ‘the shadow’ Cameron has retired to Florida to run a surf shop and Harker has brought in a new guy to be tested. He is 27 year old Diego Ramirez, 75th Rangers SOCOM, to see if he fits.Before they get a fix on each other, the call comes for them to saddle up. There is a scroll that interestingly enough Selena can again help with her background in old languages and the team is set up for following clues and beating a madman to find King Solomon’s final resting place.Again my hands sweat as we travel with our team following the clues, surrounded by the danger of what could happen…..…..what if the bad guy get there first……..and we cannot let them win threats that this author makes us feel. We are reeling from the attack on our team. Our team is lead from Beirut to Saudi Arabia and finally the canyons of Ethiopia, searching for an ancient place wanted by many Middle Eastern Countries and the sacred to the history of Israel.Alex Lukeman takes us again on a trip that he can only bring his readers in his wonderful voice of storytelling. The Latest Project By Jim Hendricks Nick, Selena and company are back for another fast paced, action packed, well written adventure facing off with a madman. I really like this series because of the great cast of characters we've gotten to know really well after ten books and what is in store for them next. The writing and action is top notch and leaves one waiting for the next book.

While not his best ( The Tesla Secret is my favorite) he has earned a place with Brad Thor, the late Vince Flynn, Daniel Silva, Ben Coes and Steve Berry in my list of authors I stop everything and read their latest books. Alex's Project books have always been fast paced and entertaining page turners. His characters are always well developed whether the good guys or bad. As I have said before, keep up the good work Alex and I look forward to the next installment in the Project series.

By Eve Paludan The ensemble cast is intriguing: Travis Monahan teaches anthropology in Atlanta. Adam is his globetrotter college friend. Savannah teaches ancient history at Yale. Fiona is Savannah's friend, an environmentalist who is always getting into trouble, even arrested, for her protests. Thyri is the Norwegian billionaire with an art history degree who funds their investigations/expeditions. They all met at a convention, formed a treasure-hunting group and work together to solve mysteries.When Xenia, their client, claims her family saw Kitezh, the mythical floating city in Russia, the self-dubbed “Adventurers” make plans to travel to Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world, to search for the legendary floating structure above it. Of course, the lake holds its own secrets and there are those who wish those secrets to stay secrets.As the story opens, the Adventurers, as they call themselves, are gathering in London and they go through the red tape of finding their way into Russia to investigate for Xenia. (It turns out the easiest way to enter Russia is through Finland. Who knew?)A bail bondsman nicknamed “Mickey Large” is after them and he has his own mercenary agenda. When four of the members of the Adventurers are kidnapped by him, the game is on! I always enjoy a good villain who won’t let go of his prey and will follow them no matter where they go.Finally, after twists and turns, what the Adventurers find when they finally get to Lake Baikal is a stunning revelation. Now, the Adventurers have to decide what to do with what they know before the bad guys in Russia stop them! Villains try to thwart their investigation at every turn.There are guns, danger, pursuit, and truth-versus-legend mystery solving, plus two sets of villains. This novel seems to be an informal prequel to the Alpha Adventurers series, but is a standalone novel in its own right. It unfolds the group’s initial adventure that sets them up for solving treasure mysteries in the related alphabet adventure thriller series, which is based on the same characters.THE ADVENTURERS was an entertaining, fun read in which I got to know the backstory of the main characters of The Alpha Adventure team (the same characters also appear in “A” is for Amethyst, which I also reviewed) and got a good idea of the exciting plotlines that are in store for the investigative group. Well written juggling many characters and scenes.Fast paced treasure hunting across the world looking for a mythical land near Russia. Uncovering secrets and a hoax. It reads a lot like an action movie and doesn't let up.I highly recommend this book as well as others from K.T. Tomb. If you love adventure books you will love this one for sure.

A bit more approachable for those who like to flip through stop, and learn something vs taking a classroom adventure, perhaps than his other awesome book on succeeding in the music biz. Different animal, but also some different thoughts and there is no bad advice here. If you can only afford one music business book, this is the one, even if you're not a dummy!

If only we have more people who thought like the Stoics in today's day and age. I don't normally like history, but I read this collection for purposes of research, and I have to say...wow, what different times we live in. People just don't THINK like this anymore. Want some good solid advice or some great thoughts to remind what really matters and how you really should concern yourself? Well, start here. Very nicely compiled collection. Loved it!

The Lucretius is unreadable, and available on Gutenberg for free. The translation of Lucretius that I like best is Rolfe Humphries, who fashions the title as "The way things are." http://www.amazon.com/Lucretius-Things-Rerum-Natura-Titus/dp/025320125X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462827047&sr=8-1&keywords=lucretius+humphries Unfortunately, the Kindle edition of that book is yet another translation, also bad, by Slavitt, even though it claims to be by Humphries. "Look inside" and see for yourself. Just get the Humphries paperback, that's my advice.These Stoic sixpacks are convenient, and cheap, and I like the idea of providing accessible portable editions of classic works, but you can find much better translations, and it's worth it to seek them out. You have to read excerpts for yourself and decide which works best for you.

About the Author I loved to write as a kid. Adults told me there is no future in writing, so I assumed they were right. I studied electronics which honestly, bored me. I later started a couple of small businesses, one of which I still own today. I read one of Wayne Dyer's books - in it he states, "Don't die with your music still in you." This quote had an impact on me, and one night I awoke at 3:00 a.m. and decided, why not start today? The rest is in my first book Essence. A book that I'd enjoy, and my 10 year old could also enjoy. He's ADD so the story had to be full of action and not overly descriptive. I wanted to get to the point like in the graphic novels I loved years ago. I tried to create characters with some pretty fascinating abilities. I ended up writing an action filled story with a little heart, or Essence as I like to call it. This is the just released first story in the series. I truly hope you love the story as much as I've loved writing it. I'm so happy as an adult I realized - I don't have to listen to adults anymore. Why did it take so long? :) Dreams do come true!

By baffled In my long hunt for the hidden treasure of publishers interested in listening to songs by unknown songwriters such as myself, this book offers more to the pirate treasure map than what I had previously. In other words, the book provides lists and contact information for several music publishers of the genre I write in (CCM & Worship), but there really aren't but a few listed that are accepting unsolicited song submissions. I have to admit that I have more information than before I purchased this book, but much of that tells me of more publishers who have their doors closed. So, we'll see what happens with the 3 or so publishers who are actually accepting songs in my narrow genre.A few more thoughts about the lists of publishing opportunities: The lists are not up to date. Some of the publishers listed no longer exist. Others do not have the right contact information - but you can still search for the right contact info via websearch. I also recommend going to the publisher websites to verify the song submission rules stated in the book (because the book sometimes has it half-right).The book contains articles and other helpful insights for songwriters. Those articles are worth reading.The book also contains a list of songwriter organizations. One claims that it will give you something for free if you contact them and mention the book and its offer. I contacted them and asked but still haven't heard back from them in about 1 month since my effort to cash in. The book also lists some songwriting competitions, some that I have heard of and some that I have not.So, if you are like me and love writing songs, hope to get one or more songs published, and have no publishing contacts, then this book is worth its cost - I recommend it. I would definitely suggest starting here rather than paying much of anything for the endless services out there to make money off of wanna-be songwriters such as myself (and perhaps you). This book provides a good starting point, and I suggest using it also for ideas on how to find other opportunities.

Interesting and useful, not as much information as other entries in the series By Reasonable Reviewer In general, I am a fan of these Writer's Digest books that give information to aspiring artists and writers on where to sell their wares.This particular book is divided into sections, choral work buyers, classical work buyers, producers, agents, etc.Between the sections, there are useful essays on how to be effective in marketing and selling your works.One caveat, almost all of the information in the book is available to the determined Google searcher.Also, there apparently are not a lot of venues to sell songs and chorale productions.All in all, it is a small investment to buy this book if you are beginning your journey to become a professional song writer.

Aren't the people that buy this book by definition seeking to submit unsolicited material? Why else buy the book? Also, a lot of the information is horribly obsolete:Submit material through:MySpace!Cassette!VHS!Are you kidding me? Whoever slapped this thing together must have been asleep.If you have to double check everything on the internet to make sure it's up date... I mean, isn't that what the writers of the book were supposed to do?

The storyline begins innocently enough, describing one boy's annoyances and struggles with typical pre-teen anxieites. But the story swerves off into a darker dimension as the birthday boy uses his twisted imagination to cope with what we normally see as a harmless ritual.
