Outdoor writer and adventurer Sydney Wilder is comfortable in her cabin in the Ozark Mountains. She is busily trying to complete an assignment for Cave Explorer Magazine when a visit from a tall slender man of indeterminate age and background causes Wilder to change her whole schedule and head for Colorado. Akiela, the mysterious hermit of the Ozarks, visits in the dead of the night and tells Wilder that he has an assignment for her. He asks Wilder to go to Colorado to assist Monty Linn with a dangerous situation brought on by the greed of an unscrupulous land developer, smuggler of white slaves, and drug dealer. Akiela has powers that Wilder doesn’t begin to understand, but she accepts him as a friend. Akiela leaves a small leather bag of gold, and a map of a mysterious trail in the Rocky Mountains. He tells Wilder she will know what to do when she arrives at Monty’s ranch. When she sees the bag of gold and map Akiela left on her bedside table, she remembers the previous night’s visitor and what he had said. Wilder packs up her Jeep Commander and heads west to Colorado, and begins the most exciting and dangerous adventure she has ever been involved in up to this point in her career as a writer and adventurer. The Ancient Ones she is to meet have strange powers with the ability to disappear in one place and appear somewhere else in another form. With outlaws led by Grogan following Wilder and her small band of adventurers, the Ancient Ones slow down the pursuers by appearing to them as a great snow owl, a very large rattlesnake, and a giant white wolf. Many other animals of the great Rocky Mountains watch over and protect Sydney Wilder and her adventurous Colorado uncle and friends. Who are these people she is to meet? Where do they originate? How did they accumulate a treasure, and why would The Ancient Ones give it to save Monty Linn’s ranch? What are these strange powers and abilities they seem to possess? Mystery and adventure awaits Wilder and she is again ready for the challenge.

Aletti Thank God Eric Woodard has seen fit to resurrect Jeanne Eagels, one of the most beautiful and fascinating of the great stage stars of the early 20th Century. Not long ago Turner Classic broadcast "The Letter," Ms. Eagels' second to last movie (her last is lost), so that we could see what she looked like and what she sounded like. Dead by its release, she was nominated for a posthumous best actress academy award for that performance, so it was nothing if not revelatory (there are a few of her silent films extant, but this is the only document of her voice). For those of us who had to rely pretty much on Kim Novak's almost entirely fictional 1957 "biopic," this book is revelatory, restoring her to her rightful place as a major actress respected throughout the English-speaking world and, most famously, the creator of Sadie Thompson (alas, she had been dead for three years when Joan Crawford filled the role the way cement fills a hole). In the Kim Novak movie, Jeanne Eagels is a carnival hootchie cootchie dancer who by chance was able to "steal" the role of Sadie Thompson from an older actress who then committed suicide. The resulting guilt turned her to drink and drugs, which eventually combined to kill her. This book will finally put those outrageous fictions to rest. Fortunately, she can also speak for herself in "The Letter" which, compared with the Bette Davis remake a decade later, is understandably more "stagey" and, as a very early talkie, quite stilted.Well worth reading if you want to learn about Broadway and Hollywood during the first couple of decades of the 20th century.

I should think that anyone would find this book a compelling read. Even though the actress has been gone so long, the author details her active life & career so that any person familiar with the name will find this an important book.

Jeanne Eagels was probably one of the most gifted actresses to grace the American stage and we are fortunate to see her bravura By dennis yancey This book is an honest attempt to fill an enormous biographical void in gifted actress Jeanne Eagels. Though long forgotten, Jeanne Eagels was probably one of the most gifted actresses to grace the American stage and we are fortunate to see her bravura film work in THE LETTER. This was very difficult biographical study to tackle, but the authors deserve credit for their effort.

This is an action/adventure story about an undersized baby Beluga Whale named Chuga. It begins with Chuga, and his Mama, on his first migratory journey to their annual gathering place, the Black Pebbled Beach. There they will meet up with family and friends, and hundreds of other Belugas. Once there, Chuga makes new friends, faces the challenge of a bully, and finds himself trapped in a life or death situation. The story includes encounters with age-old and dangerous foes in the form of the Black Beasts (Orcas, or Killer Whales), the White Beasts (Polar Bears), people, and each other. With new friends, unexpected curiosities, nature’s unyielding certainties, and deadly encounters, we race along to a dramatic and heartwarming conclusion. By Always reading ;) "This exciting tale about a young Beluga Whale named Chuga takes us on an adventurous and realistic migratory journey, highlighting the abundant beauty and ever present dangers of the sea. Chuga's endless encounters with curious creatures, big and small, and precarious situations that ultimately mold his character, are described in beautiful detail and will make it difficult for young readers, and readers young at heart, to put this book down. Sit back and enjoy the adventure!"I fall into the "readers young at heart" category and loved every bit of this book. I didn't want it to end! I want to hear more about Chuga and his adventures, especially about his next meeting with Lilly.I can't wait for the next story!!

UPDATE By Picky Parent I proof read this for my 10 year old, and I read it in one sitting.Flows nicely and holds the readers attention. Provides insight without preaching on subjects everyone can relate to. I will be interested to talk to my child when he is done reading it to see what he takes away from it.Outstanding! My son truly enjoyed this story!I was very pleased to see him take the initiative to look up words he wasn't sure of, because he wanted to! It was also interesting to hear what he had to say about the bullying issue. I think most children understand blatant bullying, but may not pick up on some of the subtleties of it. I truly appreciate any story that facilitates insightful discussions with my children!

THE JUNGLE BOOK (ILLUSTRATED), by Rudyard Kipling

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2-This retelling opens with Mowgli showcasing his jungle skills as taught to him by Baloo and Bagheera. Vibrant digital vignettes display Mowgli not only surviving but thriving in a wild setting. Moving on to Mowgli's backstory, readers are introduced to villain Shere Khan. Through the tiger's dialogue, readers learn that Mowgli was abandoned in the forest by his parents, and can safely assume that Shere Khan means to harm him-though it is merely evidenced by the way the tiger roars his claims to the child and not explicitly stated in text. Fortunately, Mother and Father Wolf leap to Mowgli's defense and offer him love and protection as adoptive parents. As a young boy, Mowgli is safe and happy in his jungle home, but as he grows, the animals who vowed to protect him age and younger animals rise up to take leadership of the pack. The younger animals are vulnerable to Shere Khan's bad intentions, which puts Mowgli in a position where he must prove himself at a special pack meeting. This retelling is a great beginner version for young listeners as the lush beauty and exciting activities one can enjoy only in the wild are highlighted over the more mature elements of the story, such as abandonment and Shere Khan's plans to kill the child. The dynamic digital cartoon artwork supports this by depicting the jungle animals with large, expressive eyes and soft lines that take the bite out of fearsome features like claws and sharp teeth. VERDICT A solid addition to most library collections.-Samantha Lumetta, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OHα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist Gr. 4^-7. In 18 rich watercolor paintings, Pinkney captures the sheer drama of the eight Mowgli stories and of the well-loved "Rikki-tikki-tavi." A handsome volume for collections of classic tales. Sally Estes

Review ''It would take too long to enumerate even half of the marvelous touches by which the creatures miscalled dumb are made to live for us by Rudyard Kipling . . . The saddest words of this volume are those with which he closes, 'And this is the last of the Mowgli stories!' '' --Vogue

The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece. This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

51 of 51 people found the following review helpful. only partially the real thing! By Sagelady This is undoubtedly a beautiful book, but it should definitely be noted that it only contains the first half of Mowgli's story (i.e., through Shere Khan chapter only) - the text seems unabridged that far, but parts of both Jungle Books are missing - which I for one was misled about from other review(s).

Philip Gray stood on the shore of a mountain lake, the early mist drifting across the cold waters towards him and Antonio Costa. The broken and beaten men knelt in the mud in front of them. Their crime was against “Angelina” and although to some it might have been a slight against the name, to Antonio, it was much more. Feeling his age, he handed Philip the Biretta along with which went power and wealth beyond his wildest dreams. In return, “Angelina” was merely asking for his sole.

40 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Best military thriller since...ever! By Zachary T. Hill I was blown away by this book. First off, it's not set in "our world." It's a world just off set of ours. The world's a bit rougher and more cut throat. Most thrillers I've read have been technically accurate but boring or with completely lame characters. Others had great action, but completely unbelievable. This has great characters, great action and very technically competent. Really, the characters are going to make this book. The action alone would make this book a 5 star, but when you actually care about the characters the tension is even more powerful: and let me tell you about the tension. Tense doesn't begin to describe it. These characters are really in peril. As a combat veteran, I appreciated the accuracy of the arms and the use of them. They didn't make the combat unbelievable with jumping sideways with two pistols, but they made it more like the literary equivalent of a Micheal Mann film. (Heat, Collateral, etc Realistic but still amazingly entertaining. Also, the villains are just as hatable as the heroes are likable. Big Eddie is surprisingly threatening and creepy and the government guy (forgot his name) is like that boss that thinks he knows everything and owns you. We've all had one of those. If you don't mind a completely awesome book with amazing characters and brilliant action, then this book is for you!

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. When was the last time you had a love affair with a book? By Regrae In 1994 the movie Speed came out with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. I remember it well and I loved it. I remember a review that said it had enough things going on for three movies. That 1994 review could fit Dead Six by Larry Correia and Mike Kupari.Dead Six reads like two books, by two authors one writing each book, and the two are melted into one book. There is the "killer's" book and there is the "thief's book" both of which are happening at the same time and at the same place. Each character keeps getting in the way of the other and this is a pleasure for the reader. Each character is trying to solve a problem, one is overthrowing a government and the other is trying to steal a .... oh I don't know what it was he was trying to steal. Both story lines cross each other and are erily simular in characters in each book and in action. As for the reader, while this sounds confusing, this is all easy to follow and really keeps you guessing as to what will happen next. The main characters meet and try to kill each other or rather carve each other up. The two "goals" progress and digress and twist and keep you wondering what is going on and who is the "villian?"There are beheadings, women gutted like a fish, shootings, beatings, revolutions, cons, bombs, tanks, ships, fanatics even show up for a minute or two, and a whole lot of killing. The book is straight forward and the authors play fair by not introducing at the last moment new twists or "out of the blue" shanagicans. As a matter of fact the last 150 pages or so are very satifing for the reader and the "twist" is an "oh yeah" moment.Correia and Kupari are dead on with their guns and tactics. The battle scenes are believable and at times moving. They also do not short change you with their book. This is a 723 page novel with no extra pages or wasted words. These guys have their act together and once they start they know exactly where they are going and how to get there.I love these guys. Their ending is is half yes! and half Hmmm? Great job!

Sharps Dead Six is a collaborative action-thriller by Monster Hunter writing guru Larry Correia and his Army EOD buddy, Mike Kupari. Larry Correia is currently my favorite author, as well as the leading edge of the urban fantasy market. Any time a Larry Correia book comes out you can sure bet that I will have two copies on order, a signed edition from Uncle Hugo's bookseller for the collection and another from Amazon so that I get to read it the day of release. Dead Six is a first for Larry, in two ways: a first collaboration as well as a first military techno-thriller. The book, while not perfect, was a gripping read that has hooked my interest for later entries in the series.First things first. Larry and Mike know their stuff. When it comes to shooting these guys know the in's and out's of proper firearm use. I believe both authors shoot competitively. Then throw in Larry's experience as the owner of a gun store, and Mike's army training. So while some of the action sequences may be incredible the action always reads as believable if not entirely realistic. The story itself is broken up into two perspectives. One perspective is told from the ex-mercenary Constantine Michael Valentine, a somewhat jaded young man trying to lead a normal life despite his deadly skill set. The other perspective is that of thief and assassin extraordinaire Lorenzo. Both find themselves neck deep in trouble in the fictional Middle Eastern country of Zubara. For Valentine trouble is the elite black ops counter terrorist group Dead Six. For Lorenzo trouble is infiltrating a terrorist organization for the ultimate heist. Both characters find themselves with opposing objectives and end up clashing, each characters actions having direct or indirect consequences for the other. This awesome concept actually became one of my biggest problems with the novel. Valentine ends up getting random missions that coincidentally interfere with Lorenzo's plans. Once or twice this is acceptable but after several occasions the coincidence becomes a bit glaring. That set aside this portion of the novel has some exciting special forces sequences as Valentine and fellow Dead Six members eliminate dirty terrorist scum in an attempt to prevent Zubara from collapsing into civil war and chaos. There is a siege toward the middle of the novel that is desperate and heart rending and just awesome. The first half of the novel was a slow burner to me, not slow in the traditional sense because there is a great deal of action but slow in terms of plot development. The betrayals in this novel never really feel that surprising because obviously anyone who signs up for something without any real idea what they'll be doing with the incentive of lots and lots of money should expect the worst and plan for worse than that. Then there is a certain death that strongly affects a certain character but it lacks some impact because of how inorganic the relationship feels. Granted the death still held more impact than I expected but I have to admit it was a beautifully brutally written scene. The second half of the novel is much better than the first in my opinion. This is when plans finally come to fruition and our two main characters finally converge. The best parts of Dead Six involve the conspiracy theory stuff. The reader is given few answers and there are a great deal of questions that need to be answered. Shadowy organizations, black helicopters, the works. I feel the biggest draw for me with future novels in this series will be the conspiracy angle. I recommend this book to any action junkie. Bits of it read like a videogame (a well thought out videogame where the developers had some experience dealing with firearms). The plot isn't as tight as the typical Correia novel but there is real potential here for future entries. Oh, and co-author Mike Kupari is serving as a bomb disposal specialist in Afghanistan right now so I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank him for his service.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent fun, nice romance. By D. MATRANGA Robert Louis Stevenson had an ability -- an especially preternatural one at that -- to create iconic fiction. Treasure Island, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Kidnapped all have managed to become so ingrained in our collective unconscious that even if we don't read the books we know the characters and story as if we had. They are part of that select and somewhat shopworn literary crew that number familiars such as Hamlet, Don Quixote, and Ahab among its members.Yet there is more (much more in fact) to Stevenson than just memorable archetypes. I urge everyone to give some of the other works -- books like Catriona and An Inland Voyage -- a chance in order to get a true glimpse of the great ease, tremendous narrative skill and genial wit Stevenson's writings posses. Those books, as well as this one, are so pleasing, especially those who appreciate the finely modulated, masterly prose of a good-natured humorist. The saddest aspect of this particular work is the unfinished ending. Sadly Stevenson's death brought to an end this narrative, as it did I'm certain to a whole slew of others. It's also a collaborative effort on the part of his step-son Lloyd Osborne who I believe took the story down as Stevenson narrated from a convalescent state. There was another successful collaboration between the two men and one that shows the hand of Osborne more clearly called The Wrong Box, the plot there being a crafty device that must have sprung to life in the brain of one of Scotland's most celebrated raconteurs.

So, don't worry about spoilers....I've always maintained a coldly mechanical willingness to stop reading a book whenever the time comes....in St. Ives, the time comes at Chapter XXXI.Stevenson died after writing XXX chapters of St. Ives, and a respected contemporary, Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, wrote the remaining VI chapters from Stevenson's notes.Stevenson's oeuvre is fastidiously lush, precise, sophisticated, with deeply contextual character development and dialogue that leaves me breathless with anticipation for more. There's an abstractly beautiful love interest. Did I mention that I'm a fan of 19th century prose?Quiller-Couch doubtless had his merits as a 19th century writer. He ain't no Stevenson.Q-C's contribution to St. Ives lacks the prepossessing heartiness of Stevenson's dialogue and storyline.Q-C can't quite gin up the panache and persiflage that RLS animates on nearly every page.Q-C makes a too sincere but unavailing effort to match the rural patois that Stevenson offers for the reader's delight.Q-C bungles the parlous adventures of the eponymous protagonist, injecting a wretched slapstick element that leads an RLS fan to transition uncomfortably into pursed-lips mode.Stevenson's prosaic mastery is, sadly, missing in the last VI chapters of St. Ives, and, therefore, ignorance shall be my penalty for closing this truncated masterpiece before I reached the end.Read more on my blog: Barley Literate

Point of view isn’t merely another writing craft technique. Point of view is the foundation upon which all other elements of the writing craft stand—or fall. It’s the opinions and judgments that color everything the reader believes about the world and the story. It’s the voice of the character that becomes as familiar to the reader as their own. It’s what makes the story real, believable, and honest. Yet, despite its importance, point-of-view errors are the most common problem for fiction writers. In Point of View in Fiction: A Busy Writer’s Guide, you’ll learn • the strengths and weaknesses of the four different points of view you can choose for your story (first person, second person, limited third person, and omniscient), • how to select the right point of view for your story, • how to maintain a consistent point of view throughout your story, • practical techniques for identifying and fixing head-hopping and other point-of-view errors, • the criteria to consider when choosing the viewpoint character for each individual scene or chapter, • and much more! Each book in the Busy Writer’s Guide series is intended to give you enough theory so that you can understand why things work and why they don’t, but also enough examples to see how that theory looks in practice. In addition, they provide tips and exercises to help you take it to the pages of your own story, with an editor’s-eye view. Most importantly, they cut the fluff so that you have more time to write and to live your life.

While a number of other authors will dance around the topic and leave the reader more confused, Ms. Kennedy gives honest advice. She lets you know what works and what doesn't for particular POVs and why. I only wish this book had been available years ago.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I like the practical By Charlie The subject is covered very well, with a minimum of irrelevant data. I like the practical, down to earth way she gets right to how to incorporate these techniques into your own writing.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I Call this "Marcy's Purple Problem Solver" By Variety IS the Spice of Life AH! POV, how thou doth confound me!!!! I would not even call myself a "busy" writer, more a "driven" writer... whose hands are pushed along the keyboard at speeds perilous to proper spelling... by the Muse, in collusion with the characters who have taken over, running ahead of even my brain on the fourth mug of black organic freetrade coffee! What a MESS upon completion of a page, a chapter, the entire book. Marcy Kennedy is now at my left elbow at all writing times. I allow the Muse to push me until he shuts up or I can't keep up. Then I turn to the Purple Point of View "Printed Professor" as I think of it - and I check out what actually appeared on the pages... Any ambiguity is cleared before moving on... It's a FABULOUS resourse. I used to wait until I finished a chapter, or a bunch but often I'd lose that perfect thread-of-the-moment in "review mode." My critique group now thinks I "have that POV stuff down pat!" Nope, I've got Marcy's Purple Problem Solver... And highly recommend you get one too.

Review "One of the most important books ever written about recording ... a treasure trove of information about the British studio scene during its most explosive period of growth." --Malcolm Atkin, Chair, Association of Professional Recording Services''The Great British Recording Studios is a sweeping account of the golden age of UK recording. In it, author Howard Massey chronicles the cultural forces and technological innovations that shaped the sound of landmark records by The Beatles, The Who, the Rolling Stones, and many others. His profiles of iconic studios from Abbey Road to AIR to Olympic leave no stone unturned detailing everything from construction history to equipment lists to discographies to sessions anecdotes, including vintage marketing materials and many never-before-seen photos.'' --Electronic Musician Magazine''Let's not mince words. As a touring musician-producer-engineer-author-music journalist, Howard Massey is uniquely qualified to do what he has accomplished in writing The Great British Recording Studios. He has documented the definitive history of the British recording studios that brought the art of sound recording to a level that spurred, and was spurred by, a breathtaking outpouring of musical creativity in the 1960s and '70s—led, of course, by The Beatles and their insatiable curiosity regarding sound and sonic effects....Too much praise cannot greet The Great British Recording Studios. An invaluable historical document, and also one rousing ride through the most incredible musical era of the 20th Century. This book has it all. Mark it essential.'' - Mix Magazine''With a foreword by Sir George Martin, former musician-producer Howard Massey has constructed an exhaustive, beautifully presented account of very major studio from those seminal times, giving detailed histories, discographies, layouts, technical breakdown and over 100 memories from the artists and production staff who used them...With most of these studios now gone, this is the first time anyone has attempted such a project. This fascinating tome will now stand as the definitive account.'' - Prog Magazine

From the Inside Flap From the time that Thomas Alva Edison invented the phonograph, music has become an integral part of everyday life. The so-called "British Invasion" of the 1960s and 1970s spearheaded what was inarguably one of the most important and creative periods in the development of recorded music. The Great British Recording Studios tells the story of the iconic English recording studios of that era--places such as Abbey Road, Olympic, Trident, AIR, Advision, Island, and Apple--and provides a sweeping panorama of the people, places, groundbreaking techniques, and innovative artists and technicians who shaped the course of modern recording. Meticulously researched and richly detailed, The Great British Recording Studios provides comprehensive information about the history, construction techniques, acoustic treatments, room dimensions, and equipment used by the key English studios during those heady times, supplemented with many never before published photographs and more than a hundred entertaining "Stories from the Studio" that take the reader behind the scenes of the making of some of the world's best-loved records. The Great British Recording Studios is endorsed by and was written with the cooperation of the UK-based Association of Professional Recording Services, headed by Sir George Martin.

From the Back Cover Back in the "golden era" of pop music -- roughly from the mid-1950s, when rock 'n' roll made its noisy entrance on the scene, until the late 1970s, when the first digital audio devices such as drum machines made their appearance -- there was a distinct "British sound" that characterized the records being made in Great Britain and distinguished them from those being created in America. In some cases the sonic disparities are striking, in others subtle, but there is little question that the records coming out of the studios in Great Britain sounded objectively different from those emerging from American recording facilities. The Beatles, in collaboration with George Martin and the engineers at EMI,  led the way, unceasingly pushing the envelope as they crafted recordings that constantly challenged the limits of what their audience would accept. Other artists of the era followed, incorporating new elements into their music as they constantly tested and stretched the limits of the production tools at hand. By the mid-1960s, the best British recordings were as good as any made in America, or anywhere else in the world, for that matter. Essentially, then, the "British sound" was derived from a fortuitous combination of the right people being in the right place at the right time, having the right equipment (or lack thereof) at hand to realize their creative vision, and the ability to somehow overcome the convolution of a bewildering series of dueling technical "standards" -- all this, along with a healthy dose of serendipidity and misadventure. A story, in other words, worth telling.

Hurwitz Well-researched, well-written book on all of those amazing studios whose names you've seen forever on the back of albums, some well-known (like EMI's Abbey Road Studios) and others lesser so, but all important. A really good balance of technical, historical and anecdotal, with plenty of cool pics to answer the question "That's what that place looked like." Digging it!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good read By P. R. Cope I always enjoy Byers' work. He is exceptionally literate and develops his characters and plot much better than average writers. This is a long short story or novelette following an adventure by two soldiers of fortune searching for other-worldly artifacts in contemporary South America. There are plenty of guns, plot twists and witty dialog.

"You have to go out, but you don't have to come back," was the Surfman's Creed in the days of the US Lifesaving Service, when iron men rowed open boats through the surf and storms and howling gales to rescue mariners in distress. This is the story of three youthful inheritors of that tradition in modern times, serving in America's only military service dedicated to safety and security at sea. Royals All The Way! is a story of love and honor among shipmates, which begins when cadets Ben Laird, Melinda Alley and Kyle Van Kamp first set sail aboard the US Coast Guard Academy's tall ship EAGLE, never suspecting that their careers might lead to star-crossed love and murder charges. But years later, while serving in command of patrol boats and rescue helicopters in the turbulent waters around Cape Cod, they discover the true meaning of their service's core values of "Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty."

By Lindsay It's a cute calendar, but there are too many things to find, and that is stressful for a perfectionist like me! What happened to just finding Waldo? There's separate stuff on each page to find, and then a list of stuff to find on every month (like Waldo's girlfriend, dog, etc.).

With time, I think he might. The calendar itself is decent quality. Nothing special, but it works fine for helping my kid keep track of the days of the month.

The first book to celebrate the beautiful and provocative ways artists have represented, scrutinized and utilized the body over centuries.

Body of Art is the first book to explore the various ways the human body has been both an inspiration and a medium for artists over hundreds of thousands of years. Unprecedented in its scope, it examines the many different manifestations of the body in art, from Anthony Gormley and Maya Lin sculptures to eight-armed Hindu gods and ancient Greek reliefs, from feminist graphics and Warhol's empty electric chair to the blue-tinted complexion of Singer Sargent's Madame X. It is the most expansive examination of the human body in art, spanning western and non-western, ancient to contemporary, representative to abstract and conceptual.

Over 400 artists are featured in chapters that explore identity, beauty, religion, absent body, sex and gender, power, body's limits, abject body and bodies & space. Works range from 11,000 BC hand stencils in Argentine caves to videos and performances by contemporary artists such as Marina Abramovic, Joan Jonas and Bruce Nauman? Its fresh, accessible and dynamic voice brings to life the thrilling diversity of both classical and contemporary art through the prism of the body. More than simply a book of representations, this is an original and thought provoking look at the human body across time, cultures and media.

Review

Nos 1 Holiday Art Book —Artnet

"Body of Art juxtaposes Sandro Botticelli's Venus with Vanessa Beecroft's army of naked women, the iconic head of Nefertiti, and the work of Ryan Trecartin, among many other artists, to stunning effect. Highly recommended." —Artnet

"A few months ago, Body of Art arrived in the post. I plonked it down on a coffee table pile. I've lost count of the number of times I've picked it up since. One moment I am talking to a visitor, the next they have vanished into a gawping reverie as they flip, fascinated, through its pages." —The Independent

"A sumptuous and continually surprising survey... The editors have grouped their pictures in thought-provoking ways... Short interpretive texts make the correspondences more resonant." —RA Magazine

"A browser's delight, its chief virtue is juxtaposition... Body of Art is one of those compendious volumes so useful for looking things up." —The Spectator

"The editors of Body of Art... had a daunting amount of material from which to choose for their survey of the human body across centuries and cultures. They have done so with real imagination, deftly mixing the old... with the new... and juxtaposing them in themes... The effects - and the similarities and differences - are continually surprising." —The Sunday Times

"An extensive survey of unique and diverse representations of the human body... guaranteed to impress art and anatomy lovers alike." —Interview.com

"comprehensive and compelling. An impressive range of work" —Aesthetica

"a thorough-going exploration of how the body has been represented" —The Independent

"Body of Art positions itself as the most extensive survey of the representation of the body in art ever to be published - a bold claim, but one it deftly pulls off." —Daily Telegraph

"Works are often presented in unlikely but enlightening pairings ...With modest design and concise commentary; this is an intelligent, illuminating survey of a topic that has an enduring appeal." —Daily Telegraph

"Ambitious in scope." —Publishers Weekly

"Body of Art is a fascinating study of the myriad ways in which artists have represented the human body, making often surprising and always illuminating connections between centuries, imaginations and media." —Jennifer Higgie, Writer and co-editor of frieze

"Without reflection, it is difficult to understand the integrity of our corporeality, and the way that our mind is intimately interconnected, body and soul." —Jennifer Blessing, Body of Art
