Thirteen-year-old Reis Courtney, from Surrey, is apprenticed to one Dougham Gaunse, also known as Joachim Gans, famed metallurgist of Queen Elizabeth I and the first recorded Jew in the New World.
Joachim and others travel to the Virginia lands in 1585, to search for gold, silver and most valuable of all, copper, to fashion the armaments for England s war against Spain. This special expedition, under the leadership of Ralph Lane and supported by Sir Walter Raleigh, is fraught with danger, from the native Indians who lurk in the woodlands to the hatred which the German miners harbor as they work alongside Joachim.
Reis finds his master taciturn and mysterious. He chants in Hebrew and antagonizes all except Thomas Hariot and Ralph Lane. Trouble occurs when the great Indian Chief, Pemisapan, formerly known as Wingina, turns against them.
What happens when Pemisapan captures them, holding them hostage and threatening their lives? What magic can Joachim perform to save them all? Faced with the choice of giving in to Pemisapan, or sacrificing his apprentice, Joachim must make one of the hardest decisions of his life.
Upon him rests the fate of the entire 1585 expedition and the life of one small boy.
A prequel to The Lyon Saga series about the 1587 Lost Colony of Roanoke Island.

Joachim's Magic, by M. L. Stainer From Kirkus Reviews An ambitious novel about the New World examines a complex historical figure, a master metallurgist.Stainer (The Lyon’s Crown, 2004, etc.) embraces Tidewater Virginia/North Carolina 400 years ago as her special bailiwick. Here we have an expedition that Sir Walter Raleigh bankrolled in 1585, seeking to unearth copper in Virginia. Thus we find Joachim Gans (aka Dougham Gaunse), the foremost metallurgist of the age, among the colonial party, along with his 12-year-old apprentice, Reis Courtney. The search for copper ultimately fails, but Reis, a tough kid and in awe of his master, still discovers plenty of adventure. Joachim becomes a kind, willing teacher to Reis. Others in the party, especially the Germans, express no love for Joachim, because he is Jewish. The old canards surface: Jews killed Christ; they drink the blood of children; etc. Little Jeremie, another apprentice, believes these stories. Reis doesn’t, but he remains curious about this private man who prays in Hebrew, refuses to eat meat (because it’s not kosher), and wears a silver Magen David. The diverse characters include Erhart Greutter, a bigot who continuously taunts Joachim; the renowned mathematician Thomas Hariot, who tries valiantly to keep the peace; and the Native American chief Pemisapan, who turns against the colonists. At one point, the chief’s forces capture a group of colonists, including Joachim and his apprentice—can the metallurgist save himself and Reis? A fierce battle ultimately ensues, but the real story concerns the gruff affection between Joachim and Reis, and the apprentice’s maturation in a world that encourages age-old hatreds. This smoothly written, well-paced novel deftly handles the historical and fictional characters and perennial themes. The empathetic book’s first sentence is “Me master beat me yesterday.” That is said by 9-year-old Jeremie (who later contracts ague). This wonderful dramatic opening, a real heart-tugger, shows in a bleak five words what times were like in the New World, especially for youngsters sold into apprenticeship by their desperate parents. (Reis, in effect an orphan, volunteers for the position.) But Joachim and Reis’ evolving father-son relationship becomes the most touching aspect of the lucid, evocative narrative. When Reis thinks he has made a mistake or overstepped his bounds, he feels deeply ashamed, a mark of adolescent love.A subtle, sensitive tale about struggling colonists that is a vivid contribution to its literary genre. Kirkus - (Starred Review)
Review M. L. Stainer, author of The Lyon Saga books, has now undertaken an equally serious subject: the story of Joachim Gans, master metallurgist to Elizabeth I, and the first documented Jew in the New World.
The story is told from the point of view of Joachim s young apprentice, Reis Courtney, who has volunteered his services to the wild-looking foreigner.
The literary style successfully melds two seemingly incompatible elements: bold action, dramatic choices, blood and gore adventure with its opposite: philosophical meditations on the meaning of life and how to treat others in a hostile world. There is real character development in this 200-page novel as Reis learns the value of a human life. His growing admiration for his shunned master leads him to ponder the various ways of absorbing life s often bitter lessons.
Another serious theme concerns the suspicion and prejudice against Jews which the English and Germans brought straight to the New World.
The 16th century was one of great superstition encouraging people in many countries to dread the intrusion of evil entities into the real world. In JOACHIM S MAGIC a 13 year old boy learns what real magic is and how to become a man in a changing world, where tomorrow is guaranteed to no one.

The Real Meaning of New World Magic By Plume45 This entertaining and action-packed YA book examines the British experiment in mining the New World—not for gold—but for baser ores, which are still precious to the Crown for arming her ships against Spain. To spare his uncle’s strained familial resources orphaned Reis Courtney at twelve volunteers to be apprenticed to a wild-looking Bohemian—one Joachim Gans. This master metallurgist is the first documented Jew to visit the American Colonies, but most of his fellow explorers deeply distrust him, his diary, his odd way of praying and unusual diet. Prejudice arrives with this crew and reaps the not-unexpected harvest of violence, while the entire company faces hostile Native Americans. Despite terrible hardships Reis comes of age as he battles long-held superstitions about the role of demons in the real world. The youth admires and respects his Master, but must learn the meaning of real Magic and how to become a man in this turbulent new world of change and hostility. Based on actual characters from the 16th century this interesting book of Historical Fiction will appeal to adolescent readers. Historical and philosophical education mingle with metallurgical terms as the plot unfolds--delivered with gentle doses of youthful angst and zest.

Reis Courtney is apprenticed to Joachim Gans, Elizabeth I's premier metallurgist. Joachm and his fellow explorers have been commissioned by the Queen to seek gold, silver and copper. War with Spain looms on the horizon. Reis's master is strange and not easily accepted by the others. The native Indians are hostile and when they are captured only Joachim, with his "magic" that the natives believe he has, can possibly save them.A wonderful portrayal of how prejudice flourishes when left unchecked, how respect must be earned, and how quickly a young boy must grow up and become a man. This prequel to the author's Lyon Saga series brings this time period to vibrant life. A truly brilliant picture of those turbulent times.
