There was once a time when ‘work’ was inextricably linked to survival and self-preservation; where the farmer ploughed the land so their family could eat. But the sun has long since set on this idyllic tableau, and what was once an integral part of life has slowly morphed into a painful and meaningless ritual, colonising almost every part of our lives - endless and inescapable. In The Mythology of Work, Peter Fleming examines how neoliberal society uses the ritual of work (and the threat of its denial) to maintain the late capitalist class order. As our society is transformed into a factory that never sleeps, work becomes a universal reference point for everything else, devoid of any moral or political worth. Blending critical theory with recent accounts of job related suicides, office-induced paranoia, fear of relaxation, managerial sadism and cynical corporate social responsibility campaigns, Fleming paints a bleak picture of neoliberal capitalism in which the economic and emotional dysfunctions of a society of wage slaves greatly outweigh its professed benefits.

The Mythology of Work: How Capitalism Persists Despite Itself, by Peter Fleming

Review “Fleming's analyses of work critically confront today’s capitalism, now well into its shift from old centers (western Europe, north America and Japan) to new, lower-wage centers (Asia, Latin America, Africa, etc.). The resulting precariousness, scarcity, and mindlessness of work imposed on the old centers is being covered with an ideological fetishization of work that this book well deconstructs.” (Richard Wolff, University of Massachusetts, Amherst)“Professor Fleming has established himself as the foremost critic of our generation on the pervasive and pernicious ideologies of business and management. In this, his latest contribution, he dismantles the work ethic and the compulsion of work that plagues all workers, waged and unwaged.  This is a clarion call to action against the forces of work that would try to regulate and profit from our collective self-organization.” (Stefano Harney, Singapore Management University)

About the Author Peter Fleming is Professor of Business and Society at Cass Business School, City University London. He researches the changing politics of capitalist employment relations, and has written numerous books and journal articles on this topic. He is the author of Dead Man Working (Zero, 2012) and Contesting the Corporation (Cambridge, 2010).

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. In-depth review By John L Murphy This is the first academic title I have reviewed where four-letter words and slangy invective jostle for space alongside dutiful repetition of theory. The Mythology of Work: How Capitalism Persists Despite Itself sustains Peter Fleming's critique of corporate culture. In his third book on this subject, he shifts from the institution to the employee. Or, perhaps associate, colleague or team member. Many of us carry such titles now, after all. These terms convey collegiality and shared engagement. Yet, as Fleming confirms via a 2013 Gallup Poll, 70% of millions of workers surveyed worldwide report being "actively disengaged" within the neo-liberal version of employee exploitation. Workers subsidize the rich as well as the poor; the job over the past generation has become the epicenter of life. Fleming seeks "how to successfully refuse it and the webs of capture it closely spins."When we value ourselves only as human capital, "mobile and always potentially valorizable," our self-worth plummets. As we run by our "biopower," our energy depleted during the day and renewed in our sleep, Fleming adds, we report to management. They treat us as if a "deranged girlfriend" who not only has no interest in whether she is liked or is loved, but lacks any liking or love for herself.Such a startling metaphor captures the spirit of Fleming's book. While far too much of it follows a scholarly pattern of citations from professors and recitals of their findings, the vocabulary now and then wakes the reader up. For instance, a worker equals a "tagged prisoner." Today's results-driven work environment breaks up many tasks. They may be completed any time, day or night. This means no more "normal working day" where we can clock in and out, assured our boss will not call us in the middle of the night, e-mail us on Sunday morning, or text us on vacation. The electronic format that allows more of us to telecommute and submit our workload remotely also means that we are watched. The "injunction to perform" needs no punch clock. It depends on the time-stamp of what we upload. While such a dispersed workplace may suggest democracy, Fleming reminds us of the contrary. Workers feel as if "behind enemy lines" when a supervisor asks us to speak frankly. With electronic data stored, keystrokes logged, and cubicles leaving us exposed to a Panopticon boss, a worker's autonomy ends. Mandated retreats and meetings enable managers to ferret out introverts or stragglers. Performance reviews often supplant the judgement of supervisors as to the worth of his or her workers. Delineated in numbing detail, job duties are tallied piecemeal, requiring employees to juggle multiple projects with sometimes no start or end. Facing this open-ended situation wearies workers."How can one speak to power and still retain anonymity?" Fleming asks such tough questions. Some workplaces have shifted superficially into more welcoming places, but this comfort level is pitched by the bosses, not the workers. The managers claim a rhetoric of frankness, but employees know that the conversation more often than not is likely to remain one-sided, tilted towards those issuing orders.Workers feel trapped. Managers co-opt a neo-liberal acknowledgment of discontent apparent from their subordinates. A grip of capitalist "disruption" chokes everyone. Fleming avers how a "capitalist employment relationship begins to resemble a weird version of the battered-wife syndrome: the more we are beaten, and emotionally haunted by rejection, the more we desire to stay."In our precarious and unstable economy, worker options to flee are few. In earlier decades, anarchists preached slowdowns, absenteeism, and sick-ins to factory workers. Unions were growing, and strikes were a potent threat. Now, as IT consultant Rob Lucas is quoted by Fleming, radical advice proves unwise. For "when your work resembles that of an artisan, sabotage would only make life harder." This resonates with many readers. Our tasks depend on us alone, or as part of a team of co-workers. With few places to hide from oversight, in person or online, workers grasp at a restoration of "biopower" by snatched days off. Lucas concurs, "It is a strange thing to rejoice in the onset of a flu."Rationalization and efficiency reduce many workforces while increasing demand upon those left. Fleming attempts to alleviate the impacts felt by both employees and managers at the end of this short study. A surplus living wage. "post-state democratic organizations," ending oligarchies and monopolies, a three-day work week, "demassifying society as a positive global movement," and finally "demonetarizing incentive structures" comprise his six-point plan. Today's tumult in stock markets, the EU debt debates, the anger by many at too much or too little work all speak to such pressures. While these prescriptions seem utopian under our present circumstances, Fleming's disgust at "a factory that never sleeps" reminds us of the cynicism and paranoia that corrode many lives daily.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Illuminating By Greg Schneider This book is pessimistic but illuminating and necessary. If you've followed the conversation over Amazon's workplace culture and witnessed the rise of Trump's appeal (He made money/ran companies, he can run the country) and wondered at what's going on, Fleming's book is a helpful guide. Highly recommended.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. the central message easy to understand By JohnnyBeagle While much of this was over my head, the central message easy to understand. I actually lost my job the day after I started to read this book. I'm in my early 60's and this book has convinced me to stay out of the work force, live on what I've saved, and be thankful to be out.

Get your scrubs on and don't forget your stethoscope. Welcome to the ER. This book is not about life and death struggles. This book is the polar opposite. It is about the absolute, over the top insanity that I have witnessed during my time in the ER. This book is the untold, unseen, and unshared rants and raves of an ER nurse, who has been slowly being driven mad by his patients. I want you, the reader to step into my scrubs, see this bizarre world through my eyes, and understand that once you stop laughing in the ER, it's time to quit. This book is the stupid stories that I still don’t believe. It’s the codes gone crazy. It’s the “I can’t believe you said that.” It’s a testament to everything an ER nurse puts up with on a day in and day out basis that most people don’t know exists. It makes Scrubs, E.R., House, and all the other medical shows look like fairy tales. As an ER nurse, I want to let the world know that when we pull that curtain and leave the room, we are laughing because let’s face it, it’s funny. Please from this moment forward stop and close this book if you think you are about to read about nursing at it’s finest. This is not Florence Nightingale’s kind of nursing; this is the grit, spit, vomit and s#!t that comes with the job I love/hate so much.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely The Most Humorous ER Book By Linda C. Hackling I have a macabre sense of humor mostly so I enjoy real life situational humor as opposed to canned jokes or "schtick" humor. Seeing human foilables instead of hearing them does the job for me. It takes a lot to make me truly laugh out loud like a real belly laugh. This book, in many parts, had me laughing to the point I cried. Kudos to the author for his sense of humor especially in written form. My very best was the phlebotomy (Chapter 11) section; "you only get one shot at this." The analogy of going into a restaurant, ordering a steak & telling the chef he's only going to get one shot of this made me roar, even as I write this. (Maybe because I am a phlebotomist!). For those negative reviews out there....please, give me a break. Mr. Jacobs warned you in the forward & then said it best in stating if you don't or can't have a sense of humor in the profession he's in, then get out of medicine. The review that stated, "some things are better left unsaid" can't possibly understand the gruesomeness & man's inhumanity against man presented in the ER. You have to be "called" to this profession. Give the author a break. Trauma nurses & Dr.'s see things the average person cannot possibly comprehend. If they couldn't laugh, they'd end up in the psych ward !!! Thank God we have people such as these. If I were in a catastrophic medical situation & needed the Trauma personnel, I could only hope Mr. Jacobs or his clone, was attending me. Lighten up people, this is the real world & sometimes people say inappropriate things (see chapter in the book on intake info "Triage") which is frustrating. If you chose to ignore Mr. Jacob's warning in the beginning, you could have closed the book anytime. On a serious note, to those same nay-sayers, I understand. How could anyone laugh at someone's misfortune? But we don't have situations involving all 5 senses but they DO & more. When was the last time you were thrown up on, wiped an elderly pts. butt who is a complete stranger, seen the devastation of a shotgun blast, had to tell parents their child is dead, etc. on a constant basis? People in just about any profession or job, always talk about "stress" "burn out" & not making enough money. Many, many cops suffer from all 3 & their escape is "eating their gun. So I think these care givers are allowed some form of escape besides suicide. The alleviation of the first 2 are EXACTLY why the warriors in Trauma need a sense of humor & not making enough money?????" . In medicine, "Anesthesiologists, surgeons, orthopedic Dr.s & even podiatrists in private practice (and the list goes on) make much more than these people WITH REGULAR HOURS. My negative about this book? "The New Grad Nurse Guide" is the author's only other published book of which I know. Can't wait to start reading that !!!!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Really good! By AJ Swanson As someone who has a medical condition that often lands me in the ER I have a huge respect for the nurses working there. And even more so after seeing what they go through daily. Great book, well worth reading.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Quick read. Fun anectdotes. By Timothy W. Mccollum Helpful insights for those living on the patient side of the triage window. I will use this knowledge the next time I am bringing my son to the ED at the children's hospital.

Her origins become the centre of attention and an air of mystery surrounds her. Following a return to port in Cape Town drama ensues and startling facts emerge. The author depicts the brutality of both whaling and human behaviour with no holds barred and undeniable insight in this thrilling novel. It is packed with adventure, sexual frustrations, and mystery. The Author: John Gordon Davis was born in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and educated in South Africa. He earned a BA in Political Science, paying his way through university by working as a deckhand on British merchant ships and on the Dutch whaling fleet at the Antarctic. He went on to take a Bachelor of Laws degree whilst serving as a judge´s clerk in Rhodesia. Called to the Bar, he was appointed an assistant public prosecutor in the Magistrate´s Courts during the troubled years leading up to Rhodesia´s Unilateral Declaration of Independence, before becoming Crown Counsel in the Attorney General´s Chambers. He was later appointed to the same position in Hong Kong. He quit this post to become a full-time writer when his first book, “Hold My Hand I´m Dying” became an instant best-seller. Other bestselling novels followed. A veteran seaman; he and his Australian born wife, Rosemary, sailed round most of the world in a succession of yachts. Upon retirement, they travelled widely and from their home in a lovely old Spanish farmhouse in Andalucia, Spain, he also ran highly successful writing courses for both aspiring and published authors. John Gordon Davis sadly died in 2014 leaving behind a rich literary heritage, including several unpublished novels he had worked on even as he supposedly slowed the pace.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Plot... By Judy Smith James McQuade signs up for five months of each year with the All England Whaling Company based in Capetown, South Africa, and each year he becomes more disillusioned with the hunting and killing of whales. This year, he meets Victoria Rhodes. She is a nurse on the factory ship. Her background is uncertain. The "Coloureds" aboard believe she is one of them. The White Capetowners believe she is White. McQuade knows she is a woman he can love. And he does. And life aboard his corvette and the factory ship becomes a turmoil of fear, terror, and violence. Each page is alive in this powerful novel of love and hope, touched by the tragedy of whaling, the cruelty of apartheid, and the pure and implacable beauties of the Antartic world.

The Earth is not what it seems to be, or what you imagine, or what you were taught. After hundreds of years of dormancy, it reawakens. Only one man holds the key to what is happening: an astrophysicist named Anderson. His explanation shocks the scientific community, warping the known basic foundations of time and space throughout the universe. A small expeditionary force is dispatched by Boster Denton, Inc. to explore a newly formed crevasse on Ellesmere Island near the magnetic North Pole on Inuit controlled land. Another crevasse forms near Alice Springs, Australia. These two portals serve as links between Earth’s surface and what lies beneath. A desperate father searches for his lost son the only way he knows how: by spending millions of dollars. Halfway across the globe, another man seeks to find a lost friend with a cunning plan that requires the help of the most powerful force in the world – the United States Army. Two lost adventurers enter a new world in which the fabric of evolution is torn. The Earth divulges its innermost secrets to them as they struggle to survive. This is a story of human determination and dominance against an enemy that overwhelms in both numbers and strength. It removes the gadgetry, and reveals the threads of mankind that are interwoven in heart, mind and soul. This is a battle that cannot be lost.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. not so good By Amazon Customer I will go along with the other 1 star review - laughable. The science is completely unbelievable along with actions of the characters. I only made it 30% of the way before calling it. Not worth the two bucks or my time. I usually have had great luck with less expensive ebooks.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Terrible By William This was probably the worst ebook that I have ever read. I picked this up for free, and I think I paid too much. The plot was ridiculous. The science was silly. The characters were unappealing. The dialog was stilted. The writing was scattered and incoherent. And the style was typical for an amateur author - e.g. He did this. Then they did that. Then this happened. etc.Examples of ridiculousness (may contain spoilers for anyone that wants to read this tripe) - the leader of an arctic expedition brings for guidance only a handheld GPS with a broken screen that his mom gave him. He descends into a crevasse and encounters an octopus before landing at the center of the earth, which is warm and lush, and peopled by 9 foot tall green women. That's about as far as I got and all I could take.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Laughable By Lilspotteddog If you like good sci fi you can keep looking. Weak plot, 2D characters, silly science. Not worth the money even if it was free.

I was so lost in the pages of this book that I just could not bring myself to put it down and stop reading. I had read this book constantly since I picked it up and was saddened by the realization that I had finished it and in such a short space of time. I can see myself settling down with this book again in the near future and for many more years to come. This book will be a permanent part of my extensive book collection. This book shows that with hard work, determination and faith, good will always win. This was such a brilliant story line and it was really easy to follow and keep up with. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading but who especially enjoys fantasy and/or the paranormal. This book would be an asset to any book collection, be it a small or large one.Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

The print is a great size and there are 15 words to find in each puzzle. Most of the puzzles are medium hard, but there are some that I've had to take my time on. It's a good distraction and way to disconnect from our phones and everyday life, at the end of the day.

By Kyle Miller Gerhold is now a vampire, and a hundred years later, he is still fighting for the right side.Something is amiss in The Blightwood, so he is sent to investigate. Gerhold must ward off howlers, the dead, vampires, necromancers, and more. A suspenseful and action-packed adventure on par with, if not better than, the first.Still with Pehov-like flair and wit and a Sapkowski-like action.Check it out and enjoy another chapter in Gerhold's extended life! 100% recommend for any reader!

I was kind of amazed at how easy it was to jump right back into Gerhold's adventures. This world is full of vampires, slayers, werewolves and now necromancers- oh and apparently flying ships. As if it couldn't get any better throw in some necromancers and flying ships, that made it freaking amazing. This book picked up right where to last one left off, Jarrell writing down the tales of Gerhold's life from the journals that were provided to him by Ernhold- strange names I know. It picked up after Gerhold realizes he was betrayed and had a cursed amulet in his possession. A priest tries to help him but it is too late the curse has spread and Gerhold is now one of the creatures he hunts. Fast forward to a hundred years later and Gerhold is still living amongst the priests fighting and killing monsters. He is called upon to help a vigil to investigate what is causing the townsmen to disappear in a town close by.Okay so this was just as good as the first. Gerhold was an even better fighter thanks to his vampirism but still holds his faith and values. I liked that he didn't let it completely corrupt him like it would for most everyone else. I liked that he didn't look down upon mere mortals or think ill of those that looked down on him. He took each insult in stride knowing he could easily kill them if he wanted to.Rolan was a great character. He proved that just because he was young, he was not weak. He was a great fighter and looked up to Gerhold even knowing what he was. All the other warriors were jerks but just following orders. I didn't Andyn from the get go so I'm glad I'm such a good judge of character.I didn't see that ending coming, that was quite the plot twist. It makes me really excited for the next book to figure out if Gerhold ever finds Harkin again. He has to right? Anyway I recommend this series to anyone that wants a quick dark, paranormal read.

As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Love Story with more than one twist By Meks Librarian "Miss Ludington's Sister" by Edward Bellamy was published in 1884 and is a love story with a twist - actually, more than one twist. It is of just the right length, with enough words used on the description of places and people to portray them vividly, but not with so much detail as to become boring.A young, beautiful woman with a shiny future ahead of her falls seriously ill. It takes her a long time to recover, and when she does, the illness has taken such a toll on her physically and mentally that she is hardly the same person any more. Her beauty is gone, her colours are faded, and all she wants now is to remember her past self with the happiness of her former life. The world around her has changed, too; when she timidly starts venturing outside again, she finds her friends from school days are mostly married, have babies, moved away or simply have found other pastimes without her who used to be at the centre of their circle. The village itself is constantly growing and being modernized, so that slowly but surely, everything she knew and loved in her youth is gone. When she is already in her middle age, she is left a vast fortune, and uses it to act out her dream of restoring the past: On an empty stretch of land, she has the high street of "her" village rebuilt according to her instructions, with every stone, every shrub and tree and every corner just the way they were when she was young and healthy and full of life. She moves into this ghostlike, empty village which becomes the scenery to her reclusive life.A relative of hers dies, leaving behind a little boy, and the duty to raise the orphan falls on her. Much as she loves the child and treats him like a son, he does not make a difference to her outlook on life, turned backwards instead of towards the future. On the contrary, the little boy loves the life-sized portrait of Miss Ludington's former self from the first moment he sets eyes on it (not knowing who she is), and his love only grows fonder and stronger as he gets older.Eventually, the boy is grown up, and Miss Ludington in her sixties. He returns from school, reluctant to start any profession or do anything else that will take him away from the empty village and the portrait. Instead, he develops a theory that, if proven true, could mean his abstract love for the girl in the painting can be turned into something real. How Miss Ludington and her nephew set about to bring the past to real life, and what happens when they do, I will not tell you here. Let me just say that the story managed to surprise me more than once, although some bits were foreseeable. This free ebook from the kindle shop was one I really enjoyed, and was almost sad to finish.

The Crumble. A vast chasm in the earth that is steadily eating away at the Kingdom of Rhonys. A group of courageous people set out on a daring quest to find a solution to this problem that threatens to wipe their country from the map. At last they find a vague reference to something called “The Jandoolix” in an obscure tome hidden away in a secret cavern beneath The Library. If they can find out what and where this Jandoolix is, and get it back to The Crumble in time, they may just be able to save their home. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Book 2 is better! By Scott here's the truth and the facts that all the battle blast books are good; i read this one and the one before and i am now reading the third book. finally I can say I see what that author's nararative creates its not just a action and romance book but also the balance of pride and not upsetting your friends in the book.if norika was my friend i would probably protect her alot more than the rest of the blasters who basically just sit back and watch her take care of business. battle blast ii is not a book for those who are not ok with dogmen, or those who think girls need to be protected, or those who give up. keep writing hatch! dogmen are the greatest!.
