Review "This book is a film lover's dream. It chronicles the entire history of cinema, and this updated edition includes new movies…"—Book Page"It's a perfect distraction for the film buff trying to get you to sit through that 14-hour Terrence Malick movie."—Connie Ogle, The Miami Herald "I'm very pleased that there appears to be no discrimination over genre or the country of origin. The collection of films here is appropriate for any true connoisseur of the medium. For the most part, the writers are knowledgeable about their subject and provide just enough about each film to whet our appetite, which is the true purpose of the volume, not that I need much pushing to watch more movies. There are rare gems here that will have me searching the rare video lists out there to check out. The book is an excellent value. It's heavy and substantial, clocking in at nearly 1000 pages. For each movie you'll get vital cast and crew information as well as Oscar nominations. English translations are provided for foreign films. Nearly ever film sports at least one photograph. I really do think this is one of those books that belong on every serious videophile's reference shelf, and I know that it will enhance mine for years to come. Consider it required reading from this course on filmography. There are genre-specific titles that I hope to be able to share with you in the future. The new edition editor is Ian Haydn Smith, and he's literally throwing down the gauntlet for you to choose your own movies to die for."—Upcoming Discs, upcomingdiscs.com"1001 MOVIES YOU MUST SEE BEFORE YOU DIE celebrates the most creative and influential voices in film. It is a trusted resource for movie lovers and one that we proudly reference."—Sundance Channel

About the Author Steven Jay Schneider is a film critic, film historian, author and editor of several books on film and film making, many of them available in North America from Barron's.

By Elman One might ask, why bother buying this book, there is much information available for free on IMDb. This is exactly what I was thinking...until I stumbled upon 2008's edition of '1001 movies'. I instantly decided to buy a latest edition, I was lucky, 2015 version was released only a couple of weeks ago. Every page in this book is about a masterpiece in the history of film, I was surprised to find here so many of my favorite movies, not only classic and modern American ones, but also European and Asian. You will not get to read here about movies like 'The Equalizer' or 'Fury', while they are good, they did not exactly make a difference in the history of their genres. But you most certainly, will get 'Reservoir Dogs', 'Star Wars V', 'Casablanca' as well as Polish 'Decalogue', Russian 'Levaithan' and Korean 'Oldboy'. Many movies are accompanied by photos, details about the film and a professional review. It's just so nice to have this book, the quality of paper is also really good.As you may expect, not all your favorite movies will be listed here. I was surprised that 'Kill Bill' was not there, I saw it in 2008 edition, but apparently, they removed it in 2015 in favor of 'Django Unchained'. One of the most beautiful movies that I saw - Kim Ki-duk's 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring' was not there either. 'Dawn of the planet of the Apes' is another one...I am sure there are others, too, but it shouldn't really influence your decision to buy. It's a must-have book for every movie fan, over 100 years of amazing movies is just one click away.

I missed the 2005/2008/2011/2013 updates, so I thought I would try the 2015 to see what was new. The first improvement I noticed were the colored year tabs like a dictionary. I also liked the little sidebar blurbs on the films that consist of snippets by reviewers, actors' comments & trivia. The movie posters exclusive to this edition are a welcome addition. They substitute for some of the smaller images, but they aren't always better. I realize something has to be sacrificed for new material, but I miss some of those full page shots in my original edition. But, in the end, this is an exquisite book that I could not be without. I may even purchase some of the in-between editions to discover how they differ. FYI, it actually contains over 1150 films as opposed to 1001. The outer cover is a little cheap & wears easily starting with the corners. But that's a minor complaint. Mr. Schneider has done an admirable job. There is nothing else out there like it. It's not just a mindless, coffee table book. It is a well written work that truly is one-of-a-kind.

While it didn't have some of my personal favorites, it did have a lot movies I'd never heard of. Because of the detail on each movie as well as trivia, I thought it was an interesting book to pick up and just read occasionally. It is a physically heavy book, so don't be surprised when you get it! In all very well done and I'd recommend it for any movie fan.

Tes has taken the first step towards figuring out who she really is. In doing so, the free runner from the 21st century has discovered that she’s Jack the Ripper’s sister, that she’s not actually from the 21st century, and that—oh yeah—time travel is actually a thing. She isn’t all that certain about what Jack has planned for her, or what her DNA has to do with helping repair time itself, but she knew when she joined the crew of The Valentine her chances for getting those answers became less impossible. Now, if she could only remember where the bathroom was on a ship the size of a small country… Finding that bathroom, however, is the least of the free runner’s problems. When a temporal kraken attacks both The Valentine and The Dreadnaught, Tes becomes stranded in the 1300s of Ye Old England. Making an unlikely alliance with the enemy—a medieval archer called Rune—is just the icing on the cake. The cherry on top is working with him to keep their next target, Rowan Ulrich, out of trouble long enough for their respective crews to locate them. But Rune has his own secrets, ones that begin to make Tes think there’s more to the archer than being a so-called villain. What are they, and what does the Rowan have to do with any of it?

It pointed out that after sending the superspy into space in “Moonraker”, the producer had a real challenge in trying to top THAT. Instead, he wisely decided to change tack, and focus more on the characters and earth settings. While the first book in this series, “The Steam Runner”, had little in common with Ian Fleming's famed character (or more to the point, filmmaker Albert “Cubby” Broccoli’s interpretation of him) – involving a steam-punk society and time travelers and some sort of as-yet mysterious quest. However, the pacing of that first book had the familiar (in a good sense) pacing of one of Broccoli's pre-reboot James Bond movies. And the second book followed the direction I mentioned in the first paragraph – it takes the time to delve deeper into some of the characters, rather than simply introducing them during an action sequence. And I loved it.Two characters – Tes (short for Tesla) from the “good-guy” ship “Nautilus”, and Rune from the “bad guys” craft “Dreadnaught”, find themselves stranded in Medieval England. It turns out that Rune has several secrets – for starters, Rune isn't exactly a stereotypical evil-doer but has his own reasons for serving on the ship, AND Rune is from the era and the locale where they have been sent – almost. And the ending … once everyone is back where they belong, the author leaves us not so much with a cliffhanger but rather a prologue to the rest of the series. The Steam Runner is one of my favorite series – even after only two books – and I look forward to the next installment.RATING: 4 1/2 stars, rounded up to 5 stars where 1/2 stars are not permitted.DISCLOSURE: This book was provided free of charge in the hopes of an honest and prompt review.

Although I can wait for the new year to arrive, I anticipate pinning the calendar on the wall and do what I always do with a calendar: keep track of the passing of the year. Got here intact and on schedule. I like after the New Year prices better, but we, my wife and I, thought this would be a good calendar. Hope our expectations agree with the events of the new year.

It captured my attention and I couldn't put it down for hours straight. It was emotional, and had ups, downs and twists you'd never see coming. I truly enjoyed reading this book, and would like for the author to write a second part to this. It's a great read for teenagers out there, and I would recommend for everyone to buy it. I bought 8 books to gift to families and kids out there. Great work.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Absolutley Obsessed By Isabella Roberts I rarely put five stars, but this book is just that great. The last time I cried over a book was years ago and this one seriously pulled some heartstrings. This book deserves five stars so much, and I'm obsessed with it even if I haven't finished. (I'm on chapter 18).I could say more, but I'm pretty much speechless, here. If you haven't read it, I encourage you to.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It deserves to be read By Igor Eliseev Assassin truly sucked me in with every turn of the page. I'd recommend this book to young adult readers, although it's fit for everyone over the age of twelve. Her bond with the Prince of Astodia is one I hope will never break, no matter where they are. It was emotional, hilarious, and thought-provoking.The main character, Adalia, teaches that no matter what conditions you were raised under and how pressured you can be to make a choice, your heart always knows what the right decision is. The moral is that anyone can create their own future. In the end, you will always find your way.Credit goes to the sixteen year old author who managed to put this page-turner together.I'm looking forward to hearing more from Adalia in book two. I hope her adventures never come to an end.

I loved the universe that was created. A lot of thought went into this. The writing was good to. I'm always iffy about self published stuff, but it was well done. It was very fast paced which I like. The down time was short and gave you information about the universe. I liked the characters and their back story. When it comes to the romance it was cute. I do feel near the end it was rushed, but I still liked it. It had that fairy tale feel to it. Like the prince rescuing the princess type feel.

Great fantasy/romance story By marchelle i normally do not go for fantasy like this book but it was well worth my first try. outside of the fantasy part the romance that was built was beautifully done. i loved Light and the Knight's relationship from the beginning. there were so many twists and turns that i enjoyed this book the whole way. these two along with others went through much to be together. the end of the journey from Shadow as definitely unexpected. great read.

By Stephenee * I received an ebook in exchange for an honest review. *I have read all of Madison Daniel's books and each one I fall in love with just a bit more! I love the music lists that he includes in each of his books. The list is fun and brings back memories for some of the songs - I have spent more money on iTunes each time one of his books comes out - It is a need that I have to get some of the songs! The characters and the story line he has in this series is amazing! I am an adult but I love this series even more than most young adults. It has become an important part of my reading life. I have laughed, cried, yelled, and cheered for Lucas, Big Country (he hates that name), The twins, Olivia and Sophia that I feel like I am in the book with them. The details that Madison uses in his stories are so graphic and detailed that I am sucked into the story and I never want to leave. The plot is quick moving and well developed. It is a non-stop action ride that leaves the reader wanting more. The twists, turns, loops and curves rival any roller coaster ride that I have ever been on and I could totally see this story as a ride in a theme park. The author gives you one answer only to leave you with another 20 questions, but it is well worth the ride. The ending of this story is just one more surprise - Madison is a huge fan of surprises!Make sure you ALWAYS read to the very end - he often leaves tidbits, questions, or extras at the very, very end of his stories and it is also something that I have come to look forward to as well. This series is a great one that you don't want to miss - add this and book 1 to your TBR list and get in on the action! It will make any reader feel like a kid again!***Review has been done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official. ***

After returning from another dimension with Olivia's sister Sophia, and his arch nemisis Felicity, Lucas thinks everything is a-okay. Until the new teacher arrives. Then strange things start happening. Students and teachers are disappearing. Lucas, Sophia and Felicity are having nightmares about the same creatures. Lucas is having hallucinations. Everything isn't as it seems.A great follow up to the first Lucas Ryan Versus book. I love the fact that I can read it to my younger kids. I love the combination of action, adventure, science fiction and fantasy. And the unique way Lucas's power, Ripley, is incorporated into Lucas and the story. Full of adventure and twists you won't see coming, you never know what Madison Daniel has in store. And it doesn't end there, as Lucas's story ended on another adventure waiting to happen. Yep, it's time to save the world. Again!***Review has been done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official ***

One Stick and a Waco (The "STICK" Series featuring the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles Book 2), by J. M. Taylor

About the Author One Stick and a Waco is the second in the “Stick” series, the sequel to Missing Sticks, both set during WWII, based loosely on the stories heard around the 101st Airborne reunions. (A “Stick” is the designation for one planeload of paratroopers.) J. M. Taylor has authored three other military thrillers: Lost Key, Desert Winds and Gulf Winds. Before he turned to writing Taylor served with the 101st Airborne Division as a platoon leader and battalion commander. Airborne and air assault qualified, a scuba diver and trained as a system engineer, he also designed military command and control systems in civilian life. Using his background in nuclear weapons and extensive travel in the Far and Middle East, Europe and across the States, he packs a ton of adventure into an action-filled page-turner.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 101st + OSS + a Red Tail = An Enjoyable Read By Whiskey Charley Author John Taylor has produced another great adventure book based on the 101st Airborne Division. This time the action takes place in Holland during Operation Market-Garden. Capitalizing on his previous cast of characters from Missing Sticks, Taylor has added a few twists. A strong character from his D-Day story is now commissioned and has been seconded to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Taylor also capitalizes on a stick of the paratroopers dropped far from its assigned drop zone and a crashed Waco glider carrying an artillery piece. He also introduces us to a captured officer of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and a pilot of the 99th Fighter Squadron (the famed Red Tails) who has been shot down. The characters are each realistic and believable. As a point of fact there was a single female nurse who was captured and held as a prisoner of war by the Germans. Also, a Red Tail pilot was shot down and captured by the Germans as well. Their actual stories differ quite drastically from the tale that Taylor has them undergo, but those historical facts served as the inspiration for his characters.Taylor doesn’t waste any time introducing treachery and action into his story. The first three chapters, especially, offer the reader straight action and surprising twists to the plot. But, the action doesn’t stop. Mix together an OSS operation, Dutch Resistance fighters, 101st paratroopers, a wayward artillery man, and a Red Tail pilot and something is bound to happen. The plot line keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first chapter to the last.Taylor is particularly adept at providing the background information on each of these groups and individuals while weaving their stories together for the greater plot line. The reader will experience no confusion trying to keep the characters straight in this story. One Stick and a Waco is an enjoyable read. The situations initially seem improbable, but when taken in the context of Operation Market-Garden the situations are so realistic that the reader must remind himself that this is, indeed, fiction. If you like WWII military history, you will enjoy this work. I recommend that the reader read Missing Sticks prior to One Stick and a Waco. Both are well-told stories, but the former adds context to the latter. This is a good story well told. I enjoyed it immensely and I highly recommend it.

Redmond John Taylor's many years of airborne experience and his insight into history, found in almost every chapter, leaves the reader asking, "Well what's happening on the next page?" Operation Market Garden, September 1944, and the skies over Holland set the stage for nine days of intense World War II combat at the fighting man level. No grand strategy or higher headquarters malarkey, just tales of airborne combat with all its pitfalls and problems. Lots of WWII action from OSS Jedburgh team operations, to a captured female nurse, to an insightful explanation of glider operations, to working with the Dutch Underground -- all based on actual happenings as researched by the author and woven into a truly enjoyable novel. If you like military history this book if for you.Larry RedmondAuthor "A Dusty Boot Soldier Remembers"

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. `Now he really felt sick. His captors were German soldiers, fellow paratroopers of a kind.' By Grady Harp Author J. M. Taylor served with the 101st Airborne Division as a platoon leader and battalion commander. Airborne and air assault qualified, a scuba diver and trained as a system engineer, he designed military command and control systems in civilian life before he turned to writing military thrillers. Using his background in nuclear weapons and extensive travel in the Far and Middle East, Europe and across the States, he has all the credentials needed to write realistically about the action filled books for which he is so highly respected: GULF WINDS, LOST KEY, DESERT WINDS and the WWII historical novels MISSING STICKS and its follow-up book - ONE STICK AND A WACO that features Max, a German Shepherd as a brave and true friend of the Screaming Eagles, along with a Redtail pilot and a medevac nurse.Few authors who write about war - no matter which war being discussed, WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc - have the ability to translate intensive research into factual events into a story so well developed that it feels like created fiction as well as J.M. Taylor. As he has stated, `I am a veteran of the 101st Airborne Division, of the Vietnam era, and have had the privilege of meeting and listening to the stories of our WWII veterans at many gatherings. Men and women of every generation have their heroes, but I am especially impressed with these gentlemen. I wrote the STICK series in their honor, hoping to capture some of the bravery, but also the camaraderie and, unfortunately, some of the tragedy of war, for you, the readers. After meeting some of our Dutch friends and reading the many stories of their support, I included the Dutch resistance in this story, and by extension, the Office of Strategic Services.' And it is that degree of devotion with which Taylor shares his insights and his research and his history in serving up this very well presented novel ONE STICK AND A WACO. To further add to the immediacy of his writing he includes maps, photographs and documents that bring history clearly into focus while concentrating on an action packed adventure story.Taylor's synopsis is brief but to the point and personal: `ONE STICK AND A WACO is fiction, set in time and place during Operation MARKET GARDEN during WWII with the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division. Lieutenant Alex Pfister fought in Normandy with the 101st Airborne and has been recruited by the OSS after his successful operation behind German lines to parachute into Holland and recruit a new team, including scattered Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division and Max the German Shepherd. Together they attempt the rescue of a downed Redtail P-51 pilot, British and American bomber crewmen and an American medevac nurse trapped behind German lines. While the 101st Airborne Division, along with the 82nd and 1st British Airborne fight to hold the road to Arnhem, our band of survivors search for German V-2 mobile launchers and fight to liberate desperate concentration camp survivors while they all fight for their lives.'Taylor manages to keep his facts clear (even though he fictionalizes some names and information for obvious reasons) while balancing real WW II incidents and heroes and heroines with the tattoo of bullets and explosions. This is a solid historical fiction novel that makes the reader eager to turn to the first book of the series MISSING STICKS. Taylor simply has this genre down pat. Grady Harp, August 15

When Cynthia Trenshaw, recently widowed, moves to Berkeley, she thinks the reason she has transplanted herself is to earn her master’s degree in theology. But when, step by unexpected step, she is drawn into the cultural borderlands where society’s “invisible people” reside, she encounters dispossessed and demanding teachers not listed on any academic roster―and becomes immersed in a heady curriculum of helplessness and joy, wisdom and pain. A book that encourages readers to receive the generosity and reciprocity of the margins, Meeting in the Margins offers guidance for how we can all, as individuals, begin to repair the rift between the margins and the mainstream of society―simply by being profoundly present.

Meeting in the Margins: An Invitation to Encounter Society's Invisible People, by Cynthia Trenshaw

Review “Meeting in the Margins is a dangerous book. It will move you, shake you, change you, and leave you with a profound sense that you have been in the presence of the holy. Cynthia Trenshaw’s intention is to do just that. She is a brilliant writer. Simply by telling the truth in stories that she herself has lived, she takes us into touching distance of those whom Rabindrinath Tagore called ‘the poorest, the lowliest, and lost.’” —Pat Schneider, author of Writing Alone and With Others, and How the Light Gets In: Writing as a Spiritual Practice, both from Oxford University Press “A beautifully written, challenging, and thought-provoking book, one that truly leads us to insights and recognitions that make it possible to contemplate a world that works for all. I haven’t seen anything like it. Trenshaw’s book contributes to helping us see the world at the margins with clarity.” —Margaret J. Wheatley, author of So Far From Home, Perseverance, Turning to One Another, and Leadership and the New Science “Cynthia Trenshaw is a gifted writer, massage therapist and pilgrim who has chosen to journey with those who are the most vulnerable in our society. As a writer she conveys in vivid and powerful prose the heart-wrenching details of life on the street. As a massage therapist she feels into the stories of those who live in the margins, and anoints their soul-wounds with compassion and courage. As a pilgrim she searches for meaning, her own and ours, with every encounter. This is a prayer-book as well as a text-book for those who choose to journey to the margins of society and be transformed.” —Mary Ann Finch, founder/director of Care Through Touch Institute, and author of Care Through Touch: Massage, the Art of Anointing “Cynthia Trenshaw gifts us with an extraordinary window into the soul of the marginalized among us. In exquisite detail of both inner and outer moments of meeting on the streets, the reality of presence she evokes communicates through her stories; it sparks our own celebration of that precious sense of presence. Prepare to be deeply touched. Prepare to remember what is truly important in our lives. This book is itself a gift from soul to soul. Through her open-hearted memories, Trenshaw offers us all a most generous and luxurious soul massage! ” —Rabbi Ted Falcon, PhD, author of A Journey of Awakening, co-author of Religion Gone Astray, Getting to the Heart of Interfaith, and Judaism For Dummies “This well-written, often moving account of Trenshaw’s experiences among the homeless and other forgotten individuals at society’s margins evokes a range of responses: apprehension, admiration, revulsion, recognition, and perhaps shame in anyone who’s ever avoided the sight of a street person. Trenshaw, a chaplain and massage practitioner with a degree in theology, shares her experiences seeking out these invisible men and women and offering them not only massage (relaxing for both body and mind) but the greater gift of affirming their 'realness' and 'worth.'” —Publishers Weekly

About the Author Cynthia Trenshaw earned national certification as hospital chaplain and as massage therapist. She holds WA state certifications as professional guardian, guardian ad litem, and nursing assistant-registered. She holds a master’s degree in theology (MTh) from Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. Three of the chapters from Meeting in the Margins have been published in an anthology and a literary journal, and her essays and poetry have been published in a variety of magazines and journals over the past ten years. She blogs regularly at www.cynthiatrenshaw.com.

For those who like and do "feel good" charitable events By spaddriverdavis I sent this to my sister in law as a gift as she is involved in various help other organizations. Here is her response to my asking her how the book was going."1/2 way through, yes I am totally enjoying and bless those massage therapists. Interesting perspective on homeless. It's a me book. Definitely have folks to share it with. Will send back when done"Im not sure four stars is fair because if she was writing it, the rating might be a three or a five. For those who like and do "feel good" charitable events, Im sure this book will be a winner.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I wish EVERYONE would read this touching, transformative, highly engaging memoir! By Rebecca Cleary I didn't want to turn off the light and go to sleep. That's how engaged I was from page one of Cynthia Trenshaw's magnificently powerful and readable Meeting in the Margins. Cynthia takes us to places most of us will never have the courage to go. In moving, lyrical prose, she shares her wisdom, compassion, and willingness to face the rational fears of encountering marginal places and their inhabitants -- the sick, the dying, the aging, the homeless -- as she shared her gifts of massage and healing touch with those our society so often considers untouchable. I found myself facing my own fears, my repulsion, my all-too-often willingness to look away and not see those people who are part of my human family. I experienced an expansion of compassion, understanding, empathy, and a desire to reach out even though I will probably never physically cross the boundaries into most of those margins. Cynthia acknowledges that for many of us, going into those spaces will not be an option, but she shows us how to energetically reach out with kindness, love, and healing good intention to those who have fallen through the cracks. Equally as important, she reminds us of how little it might take to put any of us in similar circumstances given the world we live in today. I for one will not be as ready to look away in the future. I found the reading of this heart-filled and heartfelt memoir to be a deeply transforming and spiritual experience. Thank you, Cynthia!

Moving Beyond Our Own Comfort Zones By Story Circle Book Reviews Cynthia Trenshaw spent twenty years being taught by those she calls "the hidden teachers of the margins." Hers is a story of compassion, insight, touch, presence and reciprocity. It is also a call to action. Her story will touch readers' hearts in ways that go beyond most peoples' comfort zones. Few have been where Trenshaw dares to go. And of those who have gone to the margins, few have articulated for the rest of us the profound effect of sharing space and touch can have on both the giver and the receiver of such a sharing.Trenshaw reminds us that "the margins, in their many varieties can be scary places to be." Not only are these oft times invisible, marginalized people living on slum streets, they can be found in prisons, nursing homes, hospitals, neighborhood parks, and even the darkened room next door. There are marginalized individuals in every community but they remain unseen by most. Trenshaw encourages readers to take steps to transform their "ordinary eyes" into "marginalized eyes"—eyes that make it possible to really see society's lost, lonely, or disadvantaged folks.Through tender vignettes, the author takes us with her to the streets, the homeless encampments, and shelters where she practiced the art of caring touch: "street massage." Readers come to know some of her street clients' personal stories in ways that tug at the heartstrings. But more importantly, readers are challenged to examine their own reactions to such individuals—and, if necessary, adjust their thinking about them.Exploring touch as science, sacrament and presence, Trenshaw is quick to point out that compassionate presence and skills such as intention and attention are necessary elements in any beneficial encounter—not just on the streets but in all settings where we are in the presence of the marginalized.Trenshaw asks two difficult questions: "Why go there?" and "Do you dare?" She painstakingly shares learned insights to help answer both of these essential questions. Long after I finished reading this profoundly moving book, I find myself returning to her insight and the question of "Do you dare?" Trenshaw coaxes us to consider leaving our comfort zones and postures of inactivity to reach out and share the gifts of time, self and touch ... in a way that is reciprocal and potentially life changing.by Lee Ambrosefor Story Circle Book Reviewsreviewing books by, for, and about women

The village of Moonfleet lies half a mile from the sea on the right or west bank of the Fleet stream. This rivulet, which is so narrow as it passes the houses that I have known a good jumper clear it without a pole, broadens out into salt marshes below the village, and loses itself at last in a lake of brackish water.

Moonfleet, by John Meade Falkner

From the Back Cover Moonfleet (1898) begins as a mystery and an adventure story, a tale of smuggling set among the cliffs, caves, and downs of Dorset. What will be the outcome of the conflict between smugglers and revenue men? How can the hero, John Trenchard, discover the secret of Colonel John Mohune's treasure? As the book progresses these two interwoven themes resolve themselves into a third and richer one, with the friendship and suffering of both John Trenchard and the craggy, taciturn Elzevir Block. The novel is at once a well-paced account of dramatic action and a celebration of the unregainable freedoms of childhood, when, as Falkner's sister wrote in a memoir, 'there are no seasons, everything happens all the year round'. Falkner's feeling for history and for the landscape of his Dorset setting combine with his gift for storytelling to turn Moonfleet into a historical romance of moving intensity.

A Blast from the Past By Barton Breen Number me among the many who read this book in grade school back in the late 60's or 70's and the name stuck with me through the years.Later as an adult, I returned to this book to read it anew and experience the magic again.Yes, this is book designed for the younger reader. But as is the case with most well written books, all ages will find something to take away. Treasure Island, Kidnapped etc. are all of the same genre, but what makes Moonfleet unique is the tight identification of the young protagonist John Trenchard and the first person telling which brings the reader into seeing and experiencing it though his eyes. For a book published in 1898 and set in 1757 and following, that youth in the 60's would find it so fascinating and real is a testament to the talent of Falkner.Timeless. Engaging. Intriguing. Fantastic!Did I mention that I like it and recommend it heartily?

Moonfleet Should Be Better Known By Anne Wingate MOONFLEET is a novel that might have been written by Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens together, although in fact it was written by John Meade Falkner. I first read it in high school and was very pleased to find it available on Kindle. It is a fast-moving novel narrated by a man looking back at his boyhood and early manhood with the kind of regret Robinson Crusoe had, although in many ways his sufferings were far greater.I would recommend it for all teenagers who have an interest in reading, and for those whose interest needs to be stimulated.

Fifteen-year old John Trenchard is bored living with his Aunt Jane in the shoreline village of Moonfleet in England - unitl his discovery of a secret thrusts him into a fugitive existence. The relatively dullish opening sets you up for a rivetting adventure, complete with "ghosts," an underground tunnel, smugglers, and the quest for a pirate's jewel treasure. Very atmospheric. Very intriguing.

Democracy failed. But something better has risen in its place. One man reigns on Noltos, with no rivals or elections to encumber him. Not knowing whose identity he’ll assume when his term is up, his fairness is beyond reproach. To the masses, this man is known only as the Adjudicator. Cole Bishop believes in the Adjudicator system. Even after he’s snatched from his bed in the middle of the night. Told that he’ll rule for a few years and then live as a stranger in somebody else’s skin. But when a mysterious accident leaves his son at death’s door, politics doesn’t seem so important any longer. Bishop is going to save the boy’s life, no matter what his government does—or what his friends say—to stop him. Debut author Crispen Callger keeps the pages turning in this smart fusion of tomorrow's technology and today's headlines. Praised as a breath of fresh air for the genre, ADJUDICATOR leaves readers wondering if perhaps humanity's political evolution hasn't quite yet run its course.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A "THINKING PERSON'S" SCIFI NOVEL By Robert Steven Thomas I was pleased to offer the following honest review in return for a free copy of the book:Scifi can serve as a great format to present the social and political inequalities of human life through a unique, metaphorical point of observation. In this original novel by a new author; colonist's left Earth hundreds of years ago, found a new habital planet and pioneeringly settled it. The going was rough. The planet eventually became split apart by three major factions. How does this "New Earth" find a political solution to solve the turmoil, infighting and injustice? The author's solution in this book presents many interesting parallels to our current global-sociological dilemmas and equally original solutions. It is also set amongst a background of action/adventure between government corruption and rebellious non-conformists. My only reason for not rating the book 5-Star is because occasionally the dialog became confusing, requiring me to re-read earlier passages for greater clarity before I could move ahead. In its defense, this book does contain many new, well-contrived tid-bits of highly original philosophy.

This Book Could Be Improved By Some Tweaks, But It Is Still An Excellent Tale By Pheel This is a story with a great premise, dealing with the governing structure of a world. I enjoyed the general concept, including how even a "perfect" system has flaws in execution. However, there are also some ways I was a bit disappointed, and that made me feel like the book could have been even more. The main character, Cole Bishop, was well created. I felt I knew him well, and was right along with him for the story. However, the antagonist, Warren Trull, was far more of a cipher. He was not a cardboard character, but we knew very little of his background, his drives and beliefs. I guess was at least partly by design, though, because much of the story, in one way or another, was Warren against Cole, and we were seeing everything from Cole's point of view. This lack of background knowledge also brings a surprise twist near the end that one would not expect. One area I felt could have used more fleshing out was that of the system itself. We were thrown into the middle of it, and didn't have any kind of prior understanding of how the Adjudication system was designed. I found myself mistrusting everything and everyone in part because of my general lack of understanding of the system. The total isolation of the Adjudicator from everyone made me think of how easy it might be to take over and subvert this governing method. The Adjudicator made the policy decisions, but his isolation prevented him from knowing whether they were ever carried out. Department heads could have easily twisted his edicts to their own ends, and no one would ever know. Granted, that is to a degree what happened with Warren Trull, being the true power behind the throne. The middle section of the book struck me as being a bit of a James Bond type story, with amazing things happening that one would not think the characters involved could do. This brought down my believability factor somewhat, and this is a story that does require belief in what is happening and how.Another area I felt was lacking even more was any explanation of "biotics" versus "synths". I especially never understood truly what a synth was. Since this was a source of much friction in the story, I would have liked to know more about that, and perhaps a bit more of the history of the creation of the society. I also never understood how avatars were created; how did their creators choose who they would look like and make the avatar that way?I felt the basic story line of Cole's son being injured and all of the factors around that were a bit glossed over, and that was the driving action of the book. Perhaps that goes back to the fact that Cole had terribly sketchy information that he was working from, much as many humans do when we are making big decisions.Overall, while it may sound like I did not like the story, nothing could be further from the truth. All the things I have mentioned I feel would have improved the story and made it a five-star+ type of book. As it is, for me it pulls the rating down by about a star at most, and definitely does not take away from my belief that this book is an excellent read, and my heartfelt recommendation that you should check it out. It is not your basic space-ship and aliens type of science fiction. It deals with a human society and their choice of how to solve problems of government. It also shows that personal relationships can sometime trump even the most rigid of systems trying to prevent personal bias from entering into how one governs.

By Grady Harp Crispen Callger steps into the world of published works with what appears to be a debut novel. His genre: science fiction, fantasy, and dystopian tales. Now probably more than at any time Sci-Fi is a popular medium especially among young adults, perhaps searching for an alternative world than the one they see disintegrating around them. Crispen takes advantage of that hunger for alternative worlds and creates a story that not only transfers us to different places and times but also to different ecological choices and governmental alternatives. It works, here, because Crispen is a very fine wordsmith and craftsman - a writer who is able to create bizarre situations and condition that affect real people and alters the stage just enough so that, strange as the ideas are, they become credible. That is the proof of fine science fiction fantasy writing. In an extensive Prologue we discover Crispen's way with words and receive more than a hint of where we are going: `This was it. The realization of a terrible promise made years ago. Dawn of a curse feared by millions but endured by only one. It would open with a powerful blow, then follow him as a dull ache all the way to his grave. The physician's face appeared where Trull's had been. Lips flat over his weak chin, no hint of compassion to be found. Here was a man who had surrendered to the will of the Bureau. Whose shrunken world had only enough room for a clipboard and its empty boxes.'The plot summary is a bit vague, only because we will need to better understand the locations Crispen mentions in passing, but at least the general direction is here: 'Democracy failed. But something better has risen in its place. One man reigns on Noltos, with no rivals or elections to encumber him. Not knowing whose identity he'll assume when his term is up, his fairness is beyond reproach. To the masses, this man is known only as the Adjudicator. Cole Bishop believes in the Adjudicator system. Even after he's snatched from his bed in the middle of the night. Told that he'll rule for a few years and then live as a stranger in somebody else's skin. But when a mysterious accident leaves his son at death's door, politics doesn't seem so important any longer. Bishop is going to save the boy's life, no matter what his government does--or what his friends say--to stop him.'Fingernail biting is appropriate while reading this novel, but allow yourself to connect with the sociopolitical parodies that make this journey so mesmerizing. Excellent debut! Grady Harp, August 15
