Dennis Slater, a radical professor? Not likely! He taught economics, a dismal subject to most people leading real lives. His new book, aimed at enhancing democracy in the United States, generated extreme anger among a group of wealthy and powerful business leaders. Their opposition was so intense, deadly force was being considered as a solution to silence his 'radical' voice. His wife, Jessie, knew trouble was around the corner when Slater's New York publisher contracted a beautiful, highly respected, political strategist to turn his academic ideas into political realities. Jessie thought Samantha Ringles wanted more than a fat contract from the publishing firm; she also wanted her husband. Jessie wasn't sure if Samantha desired her husband as a lover or wanted him dead in order to collect an assassin's fee. Maybe Samantha wanted both! Slater hoped a few reasonable and influential people would read his book and champion the proposals to create a 'we-the-people' style democracy. He didn't want money, position, power or fame, just consideration of his recommendations. The two women in his life decided he needed to push his ideas forward instead of sitting back and letting them take root in someone else's garden. He needed to enter the Presidential primaries to gain exposure for his ideas. In the resulting political turmoil, the 'love of power' was Samantha's most powerful weapon and Jessie's was the 'power of love'. The two women, allied against the deadly 'status quo', were also combatants in seeking Slater's affections. The love triangle was set in motion amidst a heated Presidential primary contest in which the rich and influential had already selected the winners. They were not going to tolerate Slater's meddling in their primary process. Time, money, power and, if needed, hired assassins, insured their desired outcome would prevail.

Primary Motive, by D. Earl

About the Author D. C. Earl was raised in a log cabin in rural Wisconsin. After graduating from college with a teaching credential, he earned an MBA, then a PhD in finance and economics. In 1972, concerned about the Vietnam conflict and the government's isolation from the people, he proposed budgeting changes which would allow citizens greater influence in their government's decisions. A speaking tour, in an old beat up station wagon, was supported in part by the sale of a self-published book, "The Peaceful Revolution". The book defined an easy and efficient method for citizens to directly influence their government. Life, making a living, marriage and children redirected his efforts to a professorship at a university from which he recently retired. Midway through his academic career, he pondered what the consequences might have been had he achieved more notoriety for his 1972 book and it's innovative ideas. Those twenty year old thoughts were used to create a fictional novel. The novel sat around on his various computers for another twenty some years. In retirement, the novel was resurrected and published under the title, 'Primary Motive'. The author has traveled through each of the states in the U. S., traveled aboard, lived in Madrid, Spain and Guadalajara, Mexico and now resides in Key Largo, Florida. Married more than fifty years, he and his wife often visit their children and eight grand children. While Primary Motive is fictional, he has hopes that its core concept of greater empowerment of the people might actually, in some future era, become a reality.

It has well developed characters and surprising events that kept me intrigued. It is a thriller with complex twists. Primary Motive is a timely novel which has similarities to our current Presidential race. One of the best parts comes at the end as a political platform gets hammered out. Our book club had an aggressive debate about the truly innovative ideas for moving our nation forward; such as allowing all taxpayers to allocate their taxes directly to various Federal departments and agencies. Whether you're interested in politics or not, you will enjoy this dynamic story.

Earl's new novel, Primary Motive, is a curious mixture of political thriller and romance novel. The author has created a story that moves purposely forward while keeping the romantic tensions between the main characters boiling in the forefront. The most thought provoking aspect of this book is it's fresh male perspective, not genuinely seen in this bodice ripping genre. If the height of female eroticism is to be desired for an inward and/or outward beauty then this novel shows us that the height of male eroticism is to be admired for an inward and/or outward strength. In the end it's a nice respite from bad boys like Christian Grey and their tiresome attachment issues.

With his characteristic talent for finding the connections between writing and the stuff of our lives (most notably in his earlier hit Maps of the Imagination: The Writer as Cartographer), Peter Turchi ventures into new, and even more surprising, territory. In A Muse and a Maze, Turchi draws out the similarities between writing and puzzle-making and its flip side, puzzle-solving. He teases out how mystery lies at the heart of all storytelling. And he uncovers the magic—the creation of credible illusion—that writers share with the likes of Houdini and master magicians. In Turchi’s associative narrative, we learn about the history of puzzles, their obsessive quality, and that Benjamin Franklin was a devotee of an ancient precursor of sudoku called Magic Squares. Applying this rich backdrop to the requirements of writing, Turchi reveals as much about the human psyche as he does about the literary imagination and the creative process. With the goal of giving writers new ways to think about their work and readers new ways to consider the books they encounter, A Muse and a Maze suggests ways in which every piece of writing is a kind of puzzle. The work argues that literary writing is defined, at least in part, by its embrace of mystery; offers tangrams as a model for the presentation of complex characters; compares a writer’s relationship to his or her narrator to magicians and wizards; offers the maze and the labyrinth as alternatives to the more common notion of the narrative line; and concludes with a discussion of how readers and writers, like puzzle solvers, not only tolerate but find pleasure in difficulty. While always balancing erudition with accessibility, Turchi examines the work of writers as various as A. A. Milne, Dashiell Hammett, Truman Capote, Anton Chekhov, Alison Bechdel, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Antonya Nelson, Vladimir Nabokov, Charles D’Ambrosio, Michael Ondaatje, Alice Munro, Thomas Bernhard, and Mark Twain, elaborating and illuminating ways in which their works expand and deliver on the title’s double entendre, A Muse and a Maze. With 100 images that range from movie stills from Citizen Kane and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to examples of sudokus, crosswords, and other puzzles; from Norman Rockwell’s famous triple self-portrait to artwork by Charles Richie; and from historical arcana to today’s latest magic, A Muse and a Maze offers prose exposition, images, text quotations, and every available form of wisdom, leading the reader step-by-step through passages from stories and novels to demonstrate, with remarkable clarity, how writers evolve their eventual creations.

THE CONTEMPLATION OF RECURRING PATTERNS [introduction]“Endlessly retyped, [the novel looked] at every stage like a jigsaw puzzle as they labored . . . bits and pieces of it taped to every available surface in Gottlieb’s cramped office. That, I thought, is editing.”— Michael Korda, on editor Robert Gottlieb’s work with Joseph Heller on Catch-22Every piece of writing is a kind of puzzle. This is true not only of a complex satirical novel but of a Shakespearean sonnet, an autobiographical essay, a play or screenplay, a love letter, and an email to a colleague about a problem at work. Whom do we address? With what tone? How should we begin? What do we want the reader to think or feel or understand? Is it best to be direct or indirect, sincere or disarming? Should we start with a joke? A quotation? There are many different kinds of puzzles, but generally speaking, a puzzle is an array of material or information that requires a solution. Let’s say a woman has a job, she works hard, but at the end of the month she doesn’t have enough money to pay her bills. Circumstances have presented her with a puzzle, a problem to solve. She could take on a second job, or stop eating out, or rob a convenience store—all possible solutions—but instead she decides to write a letter to her employer asking for a raise. The composition of that letter is another puzzle. Should it be a demand or a request? How should she support her argument? Should she mention that she’s paying her mother’s medical bills? It’s a large company, very professional, so she decides she should simply state the circumstances, offering a few highlights of her excellent work and its benefits to the company. She deliberates over whether to issue an ultimatum (“More money, or off I go”) or to acknowledge her employer’s perspective (“These are difficult times, so if the budget won’t allow it now, maybe next year?”). She decides not to mention that she knows two less-experienced men in her office are being paid higher salaries—not yet, anyway. Has she chosen well, arranged all the pieces successfully? She’ll know as soon as she gets her response.A short story or novel is a different kind of puzzle; and it is more than a puzzle. The composition of a story is a puzzle for the writer, whose job is to decide what to include, what to exclude, and how to organize the parts. The problem is compounded by the fact that, as fiction writers, we begin to write without knowing precisely what we’re trying to create. The work continually changes form, and emphasis, and purpose. Characters disappear, new characters are added; some scenes grow longer, others are reduced to summary. A pocket watch that just happened to be in a dresser drawer suddenly seems to indicate something larger. We can’t truly solve the puzzle, or arrange the words and sentences and characters and events most effectively, until we finally feel confident that we understand what we’re trying to create. But while composing a piece of fiction is like assembling a puzzle, the finished work is not presented by the writer as a puzzle for the reader to solve. There may be puzzles within the story, elements of plot or character or imagery or meaning that require the reader’s active participation, but the story as a whole is not a problem with a solution. Like Ariadne’s thread allowing Theseus to journey into—and safely out of—the mythical labyrinth, a story means to lead the reader somewhere. But the destination isn’t a monster, or a pot of gold, or a bit of wisdom. Instead, the destination is something—or several things—to contemplate. The best stories and novels lead the reader not to an explanation, but to a place of wonder. How do we know that? Because the books and stories and poems that mean the most to us are the ones we want to read again, to reexperience and reconsider.****“Magic is an art very closely related to poetry. The poet manipulates words, and the magician manipulates objects. We are transcending reality in order to produce something poetic, something beautiful, something interior.”— Spanish magician Juan TamarizThe word “magic” is commonly used to refer both to a ritualized performance with a long history (the ancient Greeks wrote about magi, or magicians) and, more vaguely, to something transcendent that the speaker either can’t or would rather not explain (“That night in Venice was magic, just plain magic”). The history of magic is richly populated with scientists and mathematicians, inventors and entertainers, gamblers, thieves, and con men. Professional magicians tend not to refer to what they do as “tricks,” since that implies gimmickry—a trap door, a hollow pencil, a coin with a hole drilled through its center. The preferred term is “illusion,” which can apply to effects facilitated by a mechanical device (a trap door, a hollow pencil, a drilled coin) as well as to those facilitated by skill and practice (a playing card palmed on the back of the hand, a deck cut to the exact same card ten times out of ten), and to those facilitated by surprising scientific and mathematical principles. Many card tricks are based on simple but non-obvious math.A magical illusion is a puzzle for the magician who, like that woman hoping for a raise, imagines an intended effect (a rabbit produced from a hat that appeared to be empty) and then organizes his materials, movements, words, and gestures to create that effect for an audience. In theory, the illusion is a puzzle for the audience, too (Where did that rabbit come from?). But the sort of person inclined to watch a magic show is the sort of person who, while understanding that there must be a perfectly mundane explanation for how the illusion was created, simultaneously hopes to be moved to a state of wonder—in the same way that a reader who picks up a new novel hopes to be transported by mere ink on paper, the arrangement of words on a page. The composer of a puzzle means to present a challenge, but also intends for his audience to solve it. A magician presents an illusion with the understanding that, while it can be “solved,” or explained, his purpose is to disguise that solution so we can experience something that, however briefly, transcends rational understanding. It’s tempting to say that a writer, then, is a kind of magician. A writer gives us a story not to provoke us to admire how it was produced, or to challenge us to tease out some hidden or coded message, but to invite us to think about something he or she has found worthy of extended consideration. But unlike a magical illusion, some of the most powerful effects of a story, poem, or novel, actually do transcend rational explanation. Discussions of the writer’s craft, of conscious decisions, can take us only so far. There’s mystery in it for the writer as well as for readers.*****“Puzzles are not solved by the use of accurate reckoning alone . . . but also by a substantial use of insight thinking [an admixture of imagination and memory]. Insight thinking does not emerge fortuitously or haphazardly. It comes about only after the observation and contemplation of recurring patterns.”—Marcel DanesiThe writer’s craft is what we can study; and by looking carefully at the work that speaks most strongly to us we can, gradually, discern patterns, choices, and decisions we find effective. Our curiosity, our interest in problems, means that many of us get pleasure from writing that yields more each time we read or see or hear it. Happily, there are plenty of stories and novels that offer up both immediate pleasure and the rewards that come from prolonged meditation. The challenge for writers is to arrange information—words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, scenes, images—in ways that are intriguing, arresting, curiosity-arousing, and illuminating. In any particular story, novel, or poem (or essay, play, or screenplay), we need to regard how we’re arranging that information, for whom, and why. That’s what this book is about. This book is not so much a sequel but a companion to Maps of the Imagination: The Writer as Cartographer. Both books are, at least in part, about ways in which a piece of writing is designed. They both mean to invite writers to think differently about what we do. (That first-person plural pronoun is generally used to refer to writers, but also at times to readers, under the assumption that all writers read.) While the two books overlap in places, and some of the same authors are mentioned, I’ve tried to avoid unnecessary repetition. In Maps of the Imagination, it seemed useful to focus on the extended metaphor and to offer brief illustrations from a wide variety of writers. The topics contemplated here seemed better investigated by more detailed discussions. In several places I refer to visual artist Charles Ritchie, whose work and process served as initial inspiration. While the primary focus is on fiction, much of what is here could apply to any form of writing. The chapters that follow consider the tension between puzzle and mystery; the gaps and contradictions that make fictional characters nearly as complex as actual people; the writer as a magician, directing the audience’s attention away from himself and toward a created representative; the maze we find ourselves in when we try to follow the “narrative line”; and our desire, as readers and as writers, for challenge, as perverse as that sometimes seems. Appearing along the way are Jerry Seinfeld, Harry Houdini, Bruce Springsteen, The Wizard of Oz, Wassily Kandinsky, tangrams, famous Norwegians, reindeer hunters, and a disappearing elephant. You’ll also encounter a variety of puzzles, which can be ignored or solved; the solutions appear in the notes to each chapter. If you’d like to try your hand at the tangrams, you can cut out the pieces on the last page of the book.Art is often discussed as a form of play—but that playfulness, that sense of delight, is frequently absent from discussions of the writing process, and of what we tend to call “the work.” But even T. S. “You must go by a way wherein there is no ecstasy” Eliot was a fan of the Marx Brothers. No matter how serious the tone, literature offers pleasure in its construction as well as in its content, and in the ways it connects us to others. While it’s possible to forget, as we push ourselves to revise and improve, we write because it gives us—at least occasionally—delight. This book, then, is offered as a provocation, a companion, and a reminder of the joy writing offers.

Chapters as Jigsaw Pieces, Plotlines as Crossword Puzzles By GM_38 Quaint book detailing the different ways in which writing literature is like a puzzle. A lot of nice examples and cross references to different types of puzzle making. Anecdotal references, analogies, simile, artistry comparison are all in this book (as well as a few interactive puzzles). This book was useful in describing how a creative fiction writer should develop their stories like a puzzle for the reader to solve.

By Gladys #XOXOtheNerdGirl **This book was provided by the author/publisher for an honest review.First let me start out by saying that the writing is fantastic, the concept ingenious and the characters are genuine. This novella is a great beginning to the series. With that being said, it felt rushed and the world building could have used some more finese. I felt the characters were so unique that their life before and during would have been enhanced with some more descriptive backdrop. This series could really be a killer!!Sadie, aka experiment 80, is said to be the last of his experiements let go from his laboratory but so much more happened. So much to learn, about herself, the experiments and what is to come. She is found by Dr. Needles, Nathan, first and he saved her from herself by giving her a reprieve. From what? By Vanessa Gothreau So as words escape me other than "WOW"!!!!!!!Oh my dear girl once again you have transformed words into a delicious cocktail that I want to drink again and again. I have rediscovered my love of vampires and all their beautiful flaws. The world of Sadie was beyond what I thought it would be yet I don't know why I thought I would have any idea of where I was going with this sweet tale except that I knew it would be a wild ride! I was "sucked" in (pardon the pun) and immediately drawn to all the wonderful characters. I can without a doubt tell absolutely anyone who needs a summer read to drop this into their summer bag for an amazing tale of adventure. Ellen I can only say SEQUEL SEQUEL!!!! I am anxiously awaiting for another adventure with Sadie and Nate! Kudos to this amazing author who will never disappoint and will take you on a magical ride every time you open one of her books!

Hards This novella is a bit different from her earlier releases--darker, fast-paced, more raw in subject, feel, and language. I found it very entertaining and suspenseful, and I could picture her characters, and it reminded me of the many horror-fest monster flicks I enjoyed in my teens. Yet she also managed to weave in moments of romance and sweetness, and even made me cry a couple of times!

A great book for those just getting started: By Chautona As an author with approximately 50 books in print (and who had to learn everything the hard way), I was excited to see this book come along. I know there are likely dozens of books on the topic, but since this is one that came my way, I decided to read it and see what I could learn.Ronald has taken the self-publishing process and streamlined it into simple, actionable steps. Not only that, he's done (and well, I might add) this with an eye to most first-time authors' problem: lack of money.Anyone can take this book, follow Ronald's advice, and come out with both print and eBook copies that look professional and read well. He shows everything from cover design to getting a quality edit on a nearly non-existent budget.I actually enjoyed his writing style--it's a bit smart-alecky in places which resonates with me, but I can imagine that some might find it condescending or irritating. I'd say, just remember that this guy is trying to help--see it through those eyes--and you'll discover that he just has a different sense of humor. I just happen to love it.Look, if nothing else, this book is worth every cent spent on it simply because he has the brilliance to say "pick the expert" option when uploading a book to Createspace. That alone: priceless. There were a few things I disagreed with, but they were minor and who says I'm right? I gave the book five stars because the content is solid and helpful without burdening you with extraneous information that only serves to fill pages and confuse the reader. He took a topic that strikes terror into the hearts of AUTHORS (sorry, disagree on that one. This author happens to have a LOT of books written and in progress) and makes it feel like something they can overcome. Well done.

By James McKay Ronald has managed to take a complex, dynamic, and personal experience (writing) and boil it down in very workable steps to take your little brain-child and get it out of the nest without spending a fortune on it. Well laid out and easy to read with plenty of real world examples and pictures.

The long-awaited memoir of seven-time Grammy-nominated artist Charlie Wilson, the iconic R&B and Funk singer-songwriter-producer—interwoven with his recollections of collaborating with fellow artists such as Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones, and Snoop Dogg.Recognized the world over for his distinct voice and timeless hits spanning a career of nearly half a century, Charlie Wilson is one of the most celebrated musicians of his generation. So it took friends and family by surprise when he checked into rehab and revealed that he had been not only homeless, but also helpless. Here, in the memoir fans have been demanding, is the story of how love and faith carried him through not only his addiction, but also prostate cancer. Here, too, is the story of his work in the music business, including a career resurgence that saw collaborations with some of the most sought-after artists of today, including Pharrell and Justin Timberlake. Now over twenty years sober, Wilson recounts a life filled with vertiginous highs and heartbreaking lows. His is a story of triumph over adversity, courage in the face of extreme hardship, and love when all else is lost. It is a tale of the last sixty years in social and pop culture history, and one that will stay with you for years to come.

I Am Charlie Wilson, by Charlie Wilson

Review I can still remember first hearing the music of Uncle Charlie and The GAP Band as a kid in Long Beach, California. When I started taking my rapping seriously, he was someone that I always wanted to work with. I was lucky enough to make that happen when he got down with me on my album Tha Doggfather. It's been nearly two decades since that record dropped and Charlie and I have been family the whole time. We've made hit records together, rocked the Live 8 stage, and I even got to honor him at the BET Awards when he got the Lifetime Achievement Award. He's been an inspiration, mentor and a big role model to me as a father and a husband. He taught me how to love my wife and kids first and my career after. He’s been there for me when I needed him the most and I hope I have been the same to him and his lovely wife and son Michael “Pesci” Paran. We are family. He’s my uncle by love not by blood. First name Charlie last name Wilson. (Snoop Dogg)Wilson's engaging story frames the excess of a life in pop-culture music while illustrating the way that faith, love, [and] determination can overcome even major obstacles. (Publisher's Weekly)A moving, powerful story of survival and redemption—like The Gap Band would say, outstanding! (Alan Light author of Let's Go Crazy: Prince and the Making of Purple Rain)

About the Author Charlie Wilson is an American R&B/soul music legend who has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album for “Uncle Charlie” and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “There Goes My Baby.” Sober for nineteen years, Wilson signed with Jive in 2004 after landing his first No. 1 Billboard Urban AC hit in 2000, “Without You.” Wilson averages seventy-five to one hundred shows a year between concert tours, festivals, and private events, while also devoting his time to charity work as a spokesperson for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife.

Prologue

Our house was very musical, but we weren’t allowed to play the blues. That’s what my mother would call any music that wasn’t gospel—the blues. Irma Delores Wilson was saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost, and in her mind, if you couldn’t sing a particular song loudly from the front pews of the Church of God in Christ, then, like cigarettes, alcohol, and cursing, it was a sin against the good Lord. Something that would land you on the wrong side of heaven’s gates. Mind you, there wasn’t any such thing as black radio in Tulsa. You had one radio station back in the fifties and sixties, and that station played Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, and the like, which we could listen to occasionally when we rode in the car. But if we wanted to hear R & B music—Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, the Rolling Stones, the Temptations, the Supremes—we had to go next door for that. Miss Hanna, our neighbor, had all that music in spades, sitting right there next to one of the best-sounding stereos and speaker systems in our neighborhood. Her records were shiny, too—she kept them clean and scratch-free. My brothers, my friends, and I would sneak over there and listen to Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me” and everything by Harry Belafonte. Our favorite was James Brown, a god in and of himself. He brought a whole other level of energy and soul that we could detect even at a young age. With him, you wouldn’t be satisfied sitting in your chair and tapping on the counter; he was doing something completely different from that Motown romanticism—not just lyrically but musically. Motown had a heavy backbeat on the two and the four, with a tambourine attached to it. When James punched the two and the four and the horns would hit and the snap of the snare drum pounced—it was bam! Like gunshots. It was so powerful and monstrous you couldn’t help but dance. He straightened everybody out with that funk, like, “Here I come, here I go, and here I’m going to stay.” He was the leader. I was only about eight or nine when James Brown was leaving that indelible artistic mark, and every last one of my friends and I loved him with abandon. We all tried to do the “James Brown.” His feet were so fast and the splits so badass. He had a hold on every young kid and teenager who ever dreamed of making music. That none of that was allowed in my house, where my father was a preacher and my mother a choir director, just made me love “the blues” even more. Still, from the youngest age, I was so moved by this soul music, I wanted to share it with my parents. There was one artist whom I thought even they, especially my mother, could appreciate: Stevie Wonder. He moved something deep inside me. I’ll never forget the first time I heard Stevie Wonder at Miss Hanna’s house. He sounded like a twelve-year-old version of my mama. In fact, I thought he was a girl—rolling his voice with that same sound quality Mama had when she sang and played piano at my father’s church—until somebody told me otherwise. One day when I heard “Fingertips” on the radio, I nearly lost my mind. I ran over to Miss Hanna’s window and yelled out to my mother to listen, and then I turned the stereo up really high. She smiled, I snapped my fingers to the beat, and Stevie, well, he worked those licks and riffs that became part of his repertoire. Nobody was making those runs on the radio. Nobody. Stevie was the first, and he was incredible. That he was a young boy, just a bit older than me, encouraged my already intense desire to sing. Prior to hearing Stevie, I didn’t believe that anybody could touch the performance ability I’d displayed in church and at home and had already been getting accolades for. But there he was. “I can get him, Mama! I can get him! I can sing like that!” I yelled. My mother laughed. And then she got serious: “Boy, you ain’t playing no blues.” Call it what you want, a sixth sense, a gut instinct, a premonition, or simply a mother’s intuition, but Mama understood the trouble that could come with being a secular celebrity. The drinking. The drugs. The women. The jealousy and envy. The danger. The incredible rise and the dizzying plummets. The stakes were high. And she wanted to protect her son—a naïve, impressionable church boy—at any cost. She did the best she could. I didn’t listen. My talent, this God-given gift of vocal, performance, and musical production skills, was too strong a pull. As soon as I could, I ran toward the fire. And I got burned. In part because that is the way of the music industry: it sucks you in and, if you are not careful, chews you up into bitty pieces and spits you back out into the wind. But also because, like my mother probably knew deep down in her gut, I was not naturally endowed with all the bravado you need to navigate stardom. Not in the earliest of my days in the spotlight, anyway. My friend Rick James, whom I’d meet after my family band, The GAP Band, started making it, knew this, too. He used to tell me that I was much too quiet. Rick was boisterously charismatic, the way he walked, the way he commanded a room. When I met him in 1978 or 1979, he was already a bona fide rock star and was covering some of The GAP Band’s music in his shows. He was on the Motown label, so he had a machine in his corner. He also had the Stone City Band up there onstage with him and a fan base that got downright rabid from the moment he’d come out, shirtless, into the spotlight, the tails of his long leather coat flying behind him, his man tights and leg warmers sitting funky in his cowboy boots, and all that hair swinging past his shoulders. When his fingers got to prancing across the strings of his guitar and the audience made out the notes for the intro to “You and I” or caught wind of the opening licks to “Mary Jane,” the entire arena would combust into all kinds of screaming and shouting and frenetic energy. Rick James was electric, and he was drawn to me because I was his complement onstage—wild and full of bravado. Active. He liked that. He liked me. And pretty quickly after we met, we were fast friends, running the streets and hitting the clubs and getting into all kinds of debauchery together. But it was hard for me to keep up with Rick. One night he had me ride in the limo with him and an entourage of about ten people as we headed for the China Club in Los Angeles. Rick was practically talking in tongues—“All you gappers and finger snappers and toe tappers and you love rappers,” that line from The GAP Band’s “I Don’t Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance (Oops!),” was just one of the jewels Rick dropped that night in the limo—and to say he was amped when it came time to walk past the velvet rope and into the doors of the China Club would be an understatement. I was by his side in the car, but by the time all the people piled out of that limo and the bodyguards started jumping out of their cars and the swag level of Rick James and his entourage was turned up to one thousand, I was all the way in the back of the line, having been shoved out of the way by Rick’s various groupies and clingers-on as they jockeyed for space in his orbit. That’s the way I was: Vibrant onstage but quiet and unassuming off. Too afraid to speak up. Rick was a superstar. Me, I was just the lead singer in a band. “You’re too humble,” Rick said to me when we finally found each other in the VIP room after twenty minutes. I didn’t want to cause a scene or be a problem to anybody, and he wanted me to be the opposite. “You should have been right here next to me the whole time.” “How could I do that?” I asked. “I had people pushing me out the way.” “You gotta act like a star,” he said, tossing in a few curse words to put an exclamation mark on his point. “Watch me. I’ll show you how.” The next day, he dressed me up in all this stuff—all that Rick James accouterment that made him bigger than life: boots and tights, leather, and leg warmers. And he had me walking around with him like that—trying to give me a different swagger. “Who are you?” he kept asking me. “I know who I am. The name is Rick James, bitch.” That was not a saying made up by Charlie Murphy and Dave Chappelle for a TV skit. Rick was really like that. That was his thing: “This is rock and roll, bitch.” He insisted I say it, but I couldn’t do it. Having been raised in a preacher’s house, I couldn’t see myself responding to someone who asked me my name with a “My name is Charlie Wilson, bitch!” So I didn’t say it, I didn’t think it, I didn’t act on it. I didn’t run through the women and call them bitches. I just let Rick act on it. And that was okay for a minute, but after a while, I started feeling less than—as if I were the clinger-on and everyone else was the superstar. I felt little. Belittled. Rick, Sly, Stevie Wonder, all the superstars I hung with had everything, and there I was with so little self-esteem. I felt as if I were a nothing, had nothing. Then soon enough, that nothing manifested for real. Low self-esteem was the bitch. And ultimately, the catalyst for my spectacular downfall. Singing the blues didn’t kill me after all. Music, my gift, helped me to soar, dropped me to my lowest of lows, and resurrected me in ways immeasurable. In fact, it, along with God’s goodness and mercy, imprinted on me as a child raised by the hand of a woman who loved and revered the Lord, saved my life.

Charlie Wilson has been singing over half his lifetime, from a child he knew what he wanted to do and be. His collaborations with artists from The Rolling Stones to Snoop Dogg show his longevity and versatility in this career. He drops so much wisdom from his own hindsight as he reflects on his life, career, drugs, homelessness, his health and the legacy he is still building. And still going strong and better than ever.I’ve loved his distinct voice since the Gap Band days, but I’m really loving this man’s voice telling his story, and he is still Outstanding!

That's the word that leaped from my mouth the minute I read the last page of I AM CHARLIE WILSON. This book was a phenomenal account of the highs and lows of the incredible life of the man we now affectionately call Uncle Charlie. In this book, we learn about the man, the music, the addiction, his faith and the love he has for his wife. His transparency was nothing short of amazing! From failed records to collaborating with the best in the business, Charlie Wilson has managed to create and maintain a sound that crosses the generational gaps and leaves everyone with a little something to groove to. From the pit of his addiction to drugs to his multiple decades of sobriety, he has inspired others who now know they too can get clean and stay clean. This book truly shows that what God has His hand on no man or no thing can destroy. Charlie Wilson was able to resurrect his career and with the help of some musical geniuses he reintroduced himself to the world in the most honest and pure way--First name, Charlie Last name, Wilson! FIVE STARS!!!!!

Regardless of being a fan or not this book is great because it can relate to anyone's life and what gives you hope in dark times and adversity to get up and move forward and always follow your heart and your dreams. I read this and was teary eyed because many of the stories and what he went through was me, my friends, or a love one has gone through as well and this book can really inspire someone who is down and maybe give them strength to better themselves and become stronger or overcome whatever life has dealt them. The stories cover how he overcame addiction, his faith in God, bad business and losing it all where he was living in the streets for years after his major successes (I did not even know this), to battling cancer. He owes a lot to his God and gives a lot of credit to his wife in this book for standing by him and helping to lift him up so I guess it is also a relationship Love Story too. Very well written and you can tell he is being sincere and from the heart. The book starts when he was a little kid, goes through the GAP Band years, then his fall, the solo years, and then his comeback. It even has some funny stories about how he worked with Snoop Dogg and many other artists like Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, and even Kanye West. A very good book for inspiration but a GREAT book if you are a Charlie Wilson fan and want to know about him. My next question is WHEN IS THE MOVIE!

From the first page of this book, we're given a nice introduction into the deeper perspective of ASL, giving a quick run through of what to expect and the wonderful quirks and techniques that ASL requires. This book was beyond helpful, it's like learning to speak and the English language as a kindergarten. This book takes it slow and explains details of the language, like matching facial expressions to what you're signing. The activities in this book make ASL an easier concept to grasp. Activities that were helpful in this book were the practicing of common phrases and questions and probably one off the most entertaining games was called "Memory Madness" which was like playing the "Pyramid" game show while also perfecting our finger-spelling. Along with this book we also were required to purchase 'Introduction to the Deaf Community', I got the 5th edition, and it would be in understatement to say this book was helpful because this book saved my life, the alphabet on the back cover is an awesome touch for the moments that I get forgetful of a letter. The activities were good memory refreshers as well. Brenda E. Cartwright knows how to assure students will pass their courses with her great textbooks.

Then it was carefully compiled into a beautifully written, easy to read By Heather Melkonian This text book is a "must-have" if you plan on teaching American Sign Language. The care and thought that was put into each activity and lesson involved was the fruition of years of collective research and the first hand knowledge in a multitude of situations proving what does and does not work for ASL students in a real live classroom. Then it was carefully compiled into a beautifully written, easy to read, easy to follow, easy to teach textbook. This book had not been written yet when I was a first year student in the program, however, I bought it anyway and use it as a reference guide and apply it to my Mentoring activities. It has been an irreplaceable addition to my reference collection and I highly recommend it.- Heather K. Melkonian

It gives you a bunch of activities to practice sign language. I think that is great because practice is what makes you more fluent in a language. It also has very interesting information about American Sign Language and deaf culture. I used this book in class all the time when the teacher told us to get into groups. We would use the activities in the book to practice sign language techniques we learned in class that day. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in learning sign language or wants to learn more.

A strong storyline, futuristic, yet with a Wild West undertone. In the year 2035 a bounty hunter and his companion, a wolf, must deal with a world turned upside down by a horrific earthquake. Nothing is like it was and some have reverted to using horses for transportation as fuel and vehicles are hard to come by. Without spoiling the plot Cody (the bounty hunter) is constantly trying to survive in a violent world. The ending takes a surprising twist and this book compels you to read on to the last page. Great book and hopefully one in a series.

Honorable Deeds finds the main character, Declan McIver wanting nothing more than to live his life in peace away from what he has seen and done. Unfortunately, Declan is an illegal and working on a boat in Boston for some unsavory characters and peace and quiet looms a long way off. He soon discovers that his boss may be aiding terrorists and attempts to find out what they have planned. What he finds is a plot to assassinate a friend that aided him years ago. Feeling the needs to settle his debt, Declan becomes a one man wrecking machine and takes to the streets of Boston to stop the terrorists. This short story packs a punch and a whole lot of action! What more could you ask for!!

It's a follow up to Sins of Omission but also stands alone so if you start with this story you won't be confused. I had a great time getting to know Declan McIver better, he's simply a bad a$$!!! Ian Graham has a firm grasp on how to write an exciting and taut political thriller and I don't see him losing his grip for a long time. This story is full of action and intrigue and I guarantee you won't be able to put it down. I don't want to give any spoilers in this review, my goal is to convince EVERYONE to pick up this story. If you're a fan of Brad Thor, and Stephen England then you are in for a great time, and a superb read!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fast paced , Good read By Ann Petersen Ian Graham gives further background into his character Declan McIver in this fast paced well written follow up to his novella Sins of Omission. If you enjoy political thrillers in the genre by authors such as Vince Flynn or Brad Thor you should enjoy Mr Graham's new addition to the hero's of those novels. After reading these 2 shorts you will have a good idea who Declan McIver is and be ready to continue on with Veil of Civility ! Although each of these stories are stand alone stories, so your not left with cliff hangers !

Drake Collins watched his world crumble with innocent eyes. His family, his friends, the planet itself set ablaze by alien’s hell bent on expansion and control. The takers, or Tremon as they fancied themselves, made no notice of the individual lives they changed. Now a soldier and pilot, Drake feeds his rage in the blood of his enemies. Some might consider loftier goals in creating a better place for their kind. Drake only considered the body count. When they took his Carrier and his band of brothers, they should have damn well made sure they took his as well. Food, watching the backs of his brothers and body count were as far as Drake Collins looked. His future no more than the tally of dead Tremon when he took his last breath, the full measure of his existence. He lived to kill. An enemy though sought to change his path to something more. An enemy with more faith in him than he had himself. An enemy that wanted him dead. She would have to stand in line. It was a long line.

Drafin: The Tremon Wars, Book Four, by Joseph Hendon

From the Author Drafin was the first book i wrote in an attempt to expand into a different genre. What I discovered in this attempt is that I really wanted to expand the Malice world but was at an impasse as to how to get there. The next in the series, Pack Leader, is a definition of the characters from Drafin and a tie in at the end to Malice. I hope you enjoy the effort.

About the Author Married father of two and working professional. I grew up in Florida and write for fun. I hope you enjoy the effort.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great start to a new series! By mizztara71 I would rate the book 4.5 stars.I am a huge fan of this authors Malice fantasy series and couldn't wait to start his new sci-fi series. I was not disappointed. This story is one epic adventure comprised of military politics, humor, slags, Werekins, Drafin and Tremons. Drake Collins lost everyone and everything he loves to the aliens called Tremons. Now he has one goal and that's to destroy as many of them as possible. The author did a wonderful job with thecharacter development of Drake. He went from a man solely focused on revenge to a hero and protector of Earth. The secondary characters added to the depth of the story. Drafin started out strong and never let up. The space fight scenes were very vivid and detailed. There are even some twists that I didn't see coming.I would highly recommend Drafin to any sci-fi lover or anyone looking for an exciting read.
