Perhaps the best-known and most popular of Edith Wharton's novels, Ethan Frome is widely considered her masterpiece. Set against a bleak New England background, the novel tells of Frome, his ailing wife Zeena and her companion Mattie Silver, superbly delineating the characters of each as they are drawn relentlessly into a deep-rooted domestic struggle. Burdened by poverty and spiritually dulled by a loveless marriage to an older woman. Frome is emotionally stirred by the arrival of a youthful cousin who is employed as household help. Mattie's presence not only brightens a gloomy house but stirs long-dormant feelings in Ethan. Their growing love for one another, discovered by an embittered wife, presages an ending to this grim tale that is both shocking and savagely ironic.

Review Edith Wharton is unique in the intimacy and sureness, not to mention the virile and satiric tone, with which she investigates this narrow and declining society TLS Wharton's prose, with its menacing images of death and darkness, is superb. First published in 1911, it remains a hauntingly stark masterpiece IRISH TIMES

Review "With each volume having an introduction by an acknowledged expert, and exhaustive notes, the World's Classics are surely the most desirable series and, all-round, the best value for the money."--Oxford Times

People can fall in love, but rarely do things turn out well. But but few of even her books can evoke the feeling of "Ethan Frome," whick packs plenty of emotion, vibrancy and regrets into a short novella. While the claustrophobic feeling doesn't suit her writing well, she still spins a beautiful, horrifying story of a man facing a life without hope or joy.It begins nearly a quarter of a century after the events of the novel, with an unnamed narrator watching middle-aged, crippled Ethan Frome drag himself to the post-office. He becomes interested in Frome's tragic past, and hears out his story.Ethan Frome once hoped to live an urban, educated life, but ended up trapped in a bleak New England town with a hypochondriac wife, Zeena, whom he didn't love. But then his wife's cousin Mattie arrives, a bright young girl who understands Ethan far better than his wife ever tried to. Unsurprisingly, he begins to fall in love with her, but still feels an obligation to his wife. But then Zeena threatens to send Mattie away and hire a new housekeeper, threatening the one bright spot in Ethan's dour life. Now Ethan must either rebel against the morals and strictures of his small village, or live out his life lonely. But when he and Mattie try for a third option, their affair ends in tragedy.Wharton was always at her best when she wrote about society's strictures, morals, and love that defies that. But rather than the opulent backdrop of wealthy New York, here the setting is a bleak, snowy New England town, appropriately named Starkfield. It's a good reflection of Ethan Frome's life, and a good illustration of how the poor can be trapped.Even when she describes a "ruin of a man" in a cold, distant town, Wharton spins beautiful prose ("the night was so transparent that the white house-fronts between the elms looked gray against the snow") and eloquent symbolism, like the shattered pickle dish. There's only minimal dialogue -- most of what the characters think and feel is kept inside.Instead she piles on the atmosphere, and increases the tension between the three main characters, as attraction and responsibility pull Ethan in two directions. It all finally climaxes in the disaster hinted at in the first chapter, which is as beautifully written and wistful as it is tragic. If the book has a flaw, it's the incredibly small cast -- mainly just the main love triangle. Ethan's not a strong or decisive man, but his desperation and loneliness are absolutely heartbreaking, as well as his final fate. Mattie seems more like a symbol of the life he wants that a full-fledged person, and Zeena is annoying and whiny up until the end, when we see a different side of her personality. Not a stereotypical shrew."Ethan Frome" is a true tragedy -- as beautifully written as it is, it's still Wharton's description of how a man merely survives instead of living, hopeless and devastated.

The cold, bleak setting seems so appropriate to Ethan Frome's existence. A life full of obligation and duty, with no hint of joy or spontaneity.Mattie Silver, a cousin of Ethan's wife Zenobia (Zeena) brings a small amount of light and life into Ethan's life. Ethan pays a heavy price for this, as do both Mattie and to a lesser extent Zeena. This is a sad novel about duty, tragedy and mutual obligation. It is not a light read, but it is a wonderful piece of prose that demonstrates that there is a form of beauty in brevity.Highly recommended.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

And Edith Wharton is one of the best. This story takes place in the cold, bleak winter farmlands of Massachusetts. Ethan Frome, a poor farmer, has a hard life tending to his land, trying to make a meager living, and also taking care of his ungrateful, demanding, sickly wife, Zeena. When her cousin, Mattie, comes to help her, Ethan's life changes completely. He falls deeply in love with Mattie. This being the 1800's, he must endure the stifling conventions of that era's society also. There love for each other proves to be a fascinating story.I loved this book. This is a story that will definitely take you away. You'll actually feel you are there. Edith's detail description of the scenery and landscape of that time are truly vivid. I found myself pausing from my reading to look outside to see if it was actually snowing. I highly suggest you find time to read "Edith Wharton's books, you'll be grateful. I certainly was!

In one American city, a small group struggles to survive. Sarge, a tank commander hardened by years of fighting in Afghanistan. Wendy, a cop still fighting for law and order in a lawless land. Ethan, a teacher searching for his lost family. Todd, a high school student who sees second chances in the end of the world. Paul, a minister who wonders why God has forsaken his children. 61 of 67 people found the following review helpful. Wow. Just wow. By M. Paszej Before I start my glowing review... I've gone through a bunch of zombie books in the last year. Found 45 percent to be ok, 45 percent to be absolute dreck not worth reading, and the remaining 10 percent to be just great! Infection belongs in the top ten percent. The book is about a different type of zombie (still well within the genre, so zombie fans are safe!), and we actually get glimpses throughout the book of how the zombies came to exist - and what reasons are for their existence. Their emergence takes up the first quarter of the book, and through flashbacks throughout the book. Very well done. You see the confusion, the apprehension, then fear and rage, characters who give up, others who fight back. The book does not offer heroes who somehow manage to live through the zombie apocalypse with their hairstyle intact, and their souls untouched. Everyone in the book is damaged somehow... and it makes you root for the characters even more, because the damage is revealed in bits and pieces, and revealed very competently. You grow with the characters, as they experience the struggle and deal with the end of the world. You'll feel nervous yourself as you read, NEEDING to know what happens next to the characters. I finished this book a lot quicker than I originally planned because of the action and exposition. Some time before a third of the book is finished, mutants begin appearing among the zombies. I won't say more, to avoid spoilers, but they add a dreadful feeling to the rest of the book. You'll be looking over your shoulder after reading, angry with the author for bringing these nightmares into your imagination. I mean this as a compliment to the author, but.... Craig DiLouie, how the h%&ll did you come up with these monstrosities?? Two days after finishing the book, and I still cannot get the creepiness out of my head. Despite this, or because of it, good job on the book!My only beef is also a fervrent wish. Please, please, please tell us their will be a second book to follow up, to tell us how you imagine the continuation of the story.

33 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Stellar apocalyptic novel with an alien twist 4.5 stars By Patrick S. Dorazio The Infection starts out with a brief prologue that introduces the reader to the Screaming that initiates the apocalypse. About 20% of the population starts to scream uncontrollably and then collapse, going into a coma that lasts three days. At the end of that three days, those people who fell down wake up, and their only desire is to spread the infection to everyone else by biting and attacking them. The reader is thrust into the story a few weeks after the initial assault and we are introduced to a group of survivors roaming through Pittsburgh in a Bradley fighting vehicle. The crew of three is led by Sarge, who shares the task of leadership of the civilian survivor crew with Anne, a mysterious woman with a major hatred of the infected. Wendy, a police officer, Paul, a minister, Ethan, a math teacher, and Todd, a geeky high school student, are the other members of this brigade of survivors. The story relates their current experiences of attempting to find shelter, avoid exposure to the infected, and seeking out other survivors, while flashing back to their initial introductions to the infection, lost family members, and the horrific memories each of them has had. DiLouie does a bang up job of revealing, by inches, what we need to know about each of the players in this story. In time, they settle at a hospital, clearing it room by room, and realize there are more than just the zombie-like infected that have been introduced into this new, horrible world. As they flee the hospital, they discover an even wider assortment of alien creatures-from wormlike to giant demons that hint at something far more sinister than just a virus or plague at work. The group makes their way to a huge encampment of survivors, which reminded me of a vast, wild-west setting filled with both hope and despair as everyone tries to make due and pretend things are normal in a world turned upside down. But the needs of the mishmash of government agencies still in existence will send our survivors back out onto the road, where they must once again come to grips with the horror their world has become. After reading Tooth and Nail, I knew that Craig DiLouie had a real talent for creating compelling, real, and fascinating characters, but he ups the ante here, with each survivor in the group being given an in depth look that allows the reader to fully appreciate the pain and agony each one of them has gone through to get to survive to this point, and why they have a willingness to stick with one another through the hell their existence has become. This is an apocalyptic novel, but I can't say that it falls exactly into the realm of a zombie novel; instead, it is a hybrid that provides plenty of brand new terrors to mess with your head. Alien creatures with little to no real explanation make this story unique, though this did remind me of other works I have read prior to this, such as The Mist, from Stephen King. I am positive a sequel is in the works and perhaps that will reveal some answers about the creatures that have invaded this world, but there appear to be no explanations on these pages, only a bit of conjecture on the part of one of the characters. I am not sure if I am griping about this-not knowing what is actually going on-because the characters themselves don't know anything either. They are just trying to survive, and in some cases, kill as many of these abominations as they possibly can. Another minor quibble I have is something I have grown used to over the course of this novel and DiLouie's previous one-the fact that the author moves into present tense on occasion, which feels a bit jarring when it occurs. It offers up an urgency, a sense of "now" to the story, but it also serves as a minor reading distraction in my humble opinion. Those very minor quibbles aside, this is an excellent book of the apocalypse, creative and wild from the start; from how the infection occurs to the results it yields, and the characters that inhabit its pages are just about as compelling as any I have ever seen.

Masterfully written with a lot of action, great characters, and a few unexpected plot twists. What more could you ask for? I too, like another reviewer have been waiting on this book for months. It was well worth the wait, and the price. The author's other book Tooth And Nail is on my 'favorites' list and this one joins the list as well. Now I have to wait again for the sequel, I'm sure it will be well worth it!

This book explores a hitherto neglected area of theological anthropology: the unity of human emotionality and rationality embodied in the biblical concept of the heart. While the theological contours of human reason have for long been clearly drawn and presented as the exclusive seat of the image of God, affectivity has been relegated to a secondary position. With the reintegration of the body into recent philosophical and theological discourses, a number of questions have arisen: if the image (also) resides in the body, how does this change one's view of the theological significance of human affectivity? In what way is our likeness to God realized in the whole of what we are? Can one overcome the traditional dissociation between intellect and affectivity by a renewed theory of love? In conversation with patristic and medieval authors (e.g. Irenaeus, Tertullian, Gregory of Nyssa, Maximus, Aquinas) and in dialogue with more recent interlocutors (Pascal, Ricoeur, Marion, Milbank, John Paul II), this work pursues a novel theological vision of the essential unity of our humanity.

The Heart Has Its Reasons: Towards a Theological Anthropology of the Heart, by Beáta Tóth

Review ''This book represents an important contribution to a Christian vision of affectivity--essential for understanding the human condition and our relationship with God. Through her study of such figures as Thomas Aquinas, Paul Ricoeur, Pope John Paul II, and Jean-Luc Marion, Toth has developed a 'Christian logic of affectivity' and the implications for theological anthropology. A timely study.''--Declan Marmion, Professor of Systematic Theology, St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland''This is a deep, rich, and surprising theological anthropology. Employing the riches of the theological tradition, Tóth overcomes the centuries-old rupture between reason and affect by retrieving the biblical concept of the heart--life's 'innermost core'--and the 'median zone,' reuniting the sensible and the spiritual. With an intensity worthy of Pascal, she thus shows how embodied human life can still be considered the image of God and of God's immense love.''--Anthony J. Godzieba, Professor of Theology and Religious Studies, Villanova University --Wipf and Stock Publishers

About the Author Beáta Tóth (STD, PhD KU Leuven) is Associate Professor in the Department of Systematic Theology at Sapientia College of Theology, Budapest, Hungary.

Masih Mary Slechta has created a contemporary, spunky Nancy Drew in "Flip," a refugee living in the United States. Told with compassion and insight into the immigrant experience, and filled with suspense, romance, and foreign intrigue as Flip helps solve a historical mystery, this chooseable path novel (teaching idioms, expressions, and phrasal verbs in a game format) is a must have for today's ESL students and teachers. Thankfully, Flip will appear again to solve another mystery in this groundbreaking series from Night Owls Press. Slechta's new Nancy Drew will continue to help readers learn how to make their way through the maze of several alternative storylines while improving their English language skills.

It was the first time I read in this style. The Spoonmakers Diamond was full of adventure, with twists, turns and decision making. I see it as an awesome learning tool for ESL students. Best of all, it can be read over and over with different outcomes based on the direction you choose the story to go in. Got my monies worth on this.

With the flip of a coin she gets sexy purebred Vampire Ethan. Ethan isn't any happier about the date than Char is, he has no plans of hooking up with a human since he wants to keep his bloodlines pure, so a date is a waste of time.Oh my gosh I laughed till I thought I'd bust a gut on this one. It was so cute and funny I loved Chars strength and how she didn't `t want to depend on anyone for anything and her silly questions for the vampire were just so outrageous it was fun! I loved how Ethan l slowly warmed to her found her intriguing and not just jumped in the sack with her. This was such an interesting take on a vampire story and a romance. I did have a little bit of issue with the actual rogue vampire thing him being so old, I found the short fight disappointing but with the fun relationship and other issues going on it really wasn't needed anyways, though way to go Char!Recommendations: If you like a different, more lighthearted, almost comical take on vampires and romance this one is for you. I highly recommend it.

Love Char's friend set up a blind date for Char and Ethan on New Years Eve, though Char is reluctant to go she finally decides to attend. What she meets is Ethan a hot vampire who only wants to be with a pure bread vampire, and who believes humans are beneath him. When sunrise is close Ethan finds himself in a predicament, his car has broken down and all of the taxi's are busy so with no other option he agrees to let Char give him a ride to her house where he will stay till the evening. Because of Char's help Ethan asks her on another date and though Ethan had preconceived ideas about his life and who he would end up with he soon finds himself drawn to Char. As their relationship grows, one of the oldest vampires is out to get revenge on Ethan and will use Char and anyone else in his way. So where to start Ethan at the beginning of this book was a jerk, he was full of himself and stuck up, as his relationship with Char grows he becomes caring and loves Char but I had a hard time believing both Char and Ethan. Though the book was telling me they cared about each other I just didn't believe it till the end, I also felt like there was a complete change one minute he hated her the next he loved her. It just wasn't believable. My other thought through this whole book was that Char was obsessed with her bunny, I have pets I love them but man can we move past the pet. The bunny became the third character in this book and it was just strange. So overall ehh it was ok, this book had a lot of potential but fell flat.

I mind as if it were yesterday my first sight of the man. Little I knew at the time how big the moment was with destiny, or how often that face seen in the fitful moonlight would haunt my sleep and disturb my waking hours. But I mind yet the cold grue of terror I got from it, a terror which was surely more than the due of a few truant lads breaking the Sabbath with their play.

About the Author Author of the iconic novel The Thirty-Nine Steps, John Buchan filled many roles including barrister, colonial administrator, publisher, Director of Intelligence, and Member of Parliament. The Thirty-Nine Steps, first in the Richard Hannay series, is widely regarded as the starting point for espionage fiction and was written to pass time while Buchan recovered from an illness. During the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan wrote propaganda for the British war effort, combining his skills as author and politician. In 1935 Buchan was appointed the 15th Governor General of Canada and established the Governor General s Literacy Award. Buchan was enthusiastic about literacy and the evolution of Canadian culture. He died in 1940 and received a state funeral in Canada before his ashes were returned to the United Kingdom.

Adventure on a Large Canvas: South Africa By Chris Ward This novel, set more than a century ago in backwater South Africa, is the great grandfather of today's thrillers. Buchan, who perfected the form in "The 39 Steps" some years later, gives his young hero plenty to do in sussing out and confronting a massive uprising by tribesmen who wish to slaughter all the white settlers for a hundred miles around. The writing is smooth and the situations are generally believable, though modern readers will have to forgive Buchan for some racist sentiments completely common at the time. Both black and white characters are compellingly and sympathetically drawn, though, so there's no reason to apologize for the book. Read it and be taken back to another time and another place, and imagine how Hollywood would produce this today-- it feels totally contemporary in terms of its "Indiana Jones" adventure plot. Enjoy! (Note: This book is available in its entirety online.)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Prester John by John Buchan By william newmoon If you want to learn how the British colonized South Africa, this is the book. If you want to learn how the native population may have viewed that colonization, you got it, this is the book. This book is about a Scottish immigrant who comes to South Africa and becomes involved in both situations. This book is a very active narrative that keeps the Scot on his feet, and then some, literally. Be prepared to try to understand the attitudes and customs of that time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Adventure in the Transvaal colony in late 19th century By catlover John Buchan's Prester John is non-stop adventure. A plucky young Brit, David Crawfurd, is sent by his uncle to South Africa to serve as assistant storekeeper on a lonely stretch of African countryside. The head storekeeper is a drunk who engages in secret meetings with local tribesmen and a dissolute Portuguese. The native Africans are behaving strangely, and a mysterious, charismatic African minister with dark secrets appears to have some kind of hold over the countryside. As David pieces together the clues, he discovers a terrifying plot afoot on the plains. Buchan knew how to slowly build suspense and then set a prolonged, breakneck pace for the adventures, struggles, and seemingly insurmountable odds for his protagonists to overcome. I have also read his Salute to Adventurers and 39 Steps, and this was his plot device in all three. He was a master at this genre. David's chief adversary, the African minister, is a rich and complex character, both brilliant and noble and written with heart, despite his drive to overcome the white settlers. Buchan was apparently a strong advocate for the British Empire over colonial interests, so some of his observations will strike modern readers as offensive. But, if you read this with a sense that you are doing so with the hindsight of evolved ideas, it is great reading.

This book tells the story of a B-36 crew, flying countless training missions while carrying full-sized 8,500-pound mock nuclear weapons in their bomb bays. B-36 crews trained for the one flight when they would be ordered to drop combat nuclear bombs on the Ussr. Flights of fifteen hours over continental United States to grueling thirty-hour nonstop flights overseas were routine, all without the benefit of in-flight refueling-not yet invented. The experiences of this crew, as they flew their assigned missions, are part of the history of our nation's defense. They were part of our Cold War Shield.

About the Author The author enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War. While in basic training, he was selected to attend Navigation school and completed his training in 1954. He was then was assigned to the Sixth Bomb Wing of the Strategic Air Command, as a navigator in a B-36 heavy bomber aircraft. The crews in the B-36 aircraft flew missions all over the world, training every day with only one goal-to be ready, when ordered, to drop nuclear weapons on the USSR. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is a story, not a memoir. By Norm@Jackson Based on the title of this book, I expected it to be a memoir of a B-36 navigator. Instead, it is a story written in first person style from the perspective of a B-36 navigator. There are many accuracies in the book; the 6th Bomb Wing was actually stationed at Walker AFB and flew B-36s. There are some inaccuracies too, such as the main character attending Mather AFB in Sacramento, Califormia for navigator training, when basic navigator training was conducted at Harlingen and James Connally Air Force Bases in Texas.Since I expected something different, and being a retired USAF Master Navigator myself, I can only give it three stars. It's not a bad read for someone who doesn't know anything about Strategic Air Command and the Air Force in the 50's, but it certainly falls short from a historical view.

By Amazon Customer The author seemed to be particularly full of himself and was awfully interested in telling you about it. He’s not so much telling a story as he is trying to impress his opinion on you. I spend 24 years on active duty in the Air Force and continue to serve as a civilian employee, and if I met an individual who acted like this author writes, I guarantee I’d take an instant dislike to him.

Having done a little flying around the globe The book did bring back memories, especially the long flights. Well done and thanks for the reminders of days past.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Captivating! By Deb Baker, author Love to find a new author & series that captures the attention! In my youth I was a real sci-fi fan but then the genre went through changes and I couldn't find any authors I liked. Now,Science fiction is back with a vengeance, with some really great stuff out there. Can't wait for a follow-up from you, Lee Barnett!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Strong women rock! By Brian Eby I am a fan of the Jeff Resnick series, and was curious to see if this author's foray into science fiction was enjoyable.Absolutely! First purchased on kindle, I am returning to get a hard copy of this and the second volume as well

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Emotional Journey By J & L Rigod I had no idea what I was reading when a friend recommended this novel to me. Talk about panning for gold nuggets, well, I found one. A true Science fiction story. This novel is filled with adventure, a romance, story telling, and a dilly of a cliff hanger ending. This is a short story that I hope has a long life.Telenia is a planet that is not so very different than ours, just slightly modified. The biggest difference is the lack of technology in almost every area. Unless you are in the Royal Court, food is basic fruit and grain. The grain is orange, but I warned you it had slight modifications. A melon tastes like a pineapple, you get the idea. Vehicles are back to the horse/donkey and cart stage, yet there are 'signs' that they have a glancing knowledge of motorized vehicles. Medicine is way backwards. The story opens with a Mother telling her son a bedtime story. You quickly realize the heroine is the Mother, herself.Medical technician, Amanda Shelton is on one of her final medical evacuations from Mars to Earth when a ripple in the space fabric hurls the spaceship down. Later, injured, Amanda finds herself in a cell being tended to. The people speak differently and well, it is better that you learn for yourself. This book starts so gently then morphs into an adventure on a different planet. The pace picks up and you find yourself clicking (ebook) through at an astounding pace. Then, to my surprise, I found myself so into Amanda's struggle that I had tears upon my face. The cliff hanging ending that assures me the story will continue in 2013, was the only disappointment. Ebooks haven't a pre-order process and so I have to manage to keep the Author's name and title of this first tale somewhere safe to buy next year. Do not let this stop you from reading this first tale. It is truly a golden nugget.

Terrific By Michelle The Cat that wanted to be a Dog is a cute story with some wonderful photos, cleverly interwoven with interesting facts about different kinds of cats. It's a fun, quick and educational read for both children and adults.(A note to the author: I got your book during your free promotion but given the competition on Amazon, you may want to consider reducing the price - it's hard to sell short books such as this one for more than $2.99. Good luck One Old Grandpa and keep the stories flowing.)

Lots of History By A Henty/Alexander Enthusiast Books are written for a younger audience, however; Henty writes history in a short, concise way that allows me a chance to get an overall picture of it. I then have loads of data to research the historical record further.

It is interesting seeing the role that novels played, in his era, towards developing the values set of young people - especially young men. "In the Irish Brigade" is a largely unknown story of the 'mercenary' role played by Catholic Irish who were displaced by British politics. At the same time you can see the efforts that Henty made to preserve those values held as essential during the period of the dominance of the British Empire. This book is good to read and provides plenty of fodder for thought.

The Rustlers of Pecos County (Illustrated), by Zane Grey

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

I found the main characters to be beliveable and connected to another time when men were men and ethics were uncompromisable.Good read.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Texas Rangers Ride! By Charles Wheeler Written earlier in his career, and in first person, this story about the Texas Rangers is typical "western" material. Having said that, I by no means mean this is inferior stuff, but you can see, if you are a devotee of Zane Grey that this book was a model for many of the more famous works that came later, making him famous. Many of his books are interconnected with scenes and prologues that are in other stories--provided you have read them all, and have a good memory. The one thing Zane Grey did not do well, in my opinion, is tell a fiction story well in 1st person. His fishing books, and camp and trail books are superbly told this way, but his fiction lacks something when he uses this literary device. This is still a good enough book to buy and read, so if you don't have it, get it, and enjoy.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Zane Grey Renewed By Wm. Williams I am a very senior citizen, so it's been many, many years since I read any of Zane Grey's books. When I saw this listed at Amazon for my Kindle, my mind reversed, and I remembered I loved those books when I was a youngster. Now I am happy I did. The book is extremely well written, along the line of McMurtry. The descriptiveness of people, scenes and actions was worth the few hours I spent reading it. I'll go on soon reading some more Zane Gray novels and really enjoy them.

I normally LOVE the Bathroom Readers' Institute's line of books, but this one seemed to be a little.... to dull. It certainly delivers on all the info it tells you it has between the covers, but, it's just lacking anything that keeps it fun or exciting. It's good info to have if you are ever caught in a wild situation, but the book was a little too serious for what I was expecting.

Cervantes’ last published novel belongs to the genre of the Byzantine novel. The author dedicated Los Trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda to Pedro Fernández de Castro y Andrade, VII Conde de Lemos, on 19 April of 1616, four days before Cervantes’ death. He was inspired to write a novel in the vein of the works of Heliodorus of Emesa, Syria, a Greek writer generally dated to the third century AD who is now known chiefly for the ancient Greek romance called the Aethiopica. Cervantes’ novel is a romantic tale of travels by sea and land, featuring both real and fantastical geography and history mixed together, with the scene of the second half of the novel being transferred to Spain and Italy. Interestingly, though Cervantes is known primarily for Don Quixote, which is now widely regarded as one of the foremost classic novels ever written, the author himself considered Los Trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda to be his crowning achievement in literature.
