This is the book for people who already know the basics taught in grade school, but who struggle with the nuances of grammar and punctuation expected in higher academia. It is not a comprehensive review of English grammar, since books like that often seem overwhelming to the student who doesn’t know where to begin or who simply doesn’t have the time to review every single grammar rule. Instead, this book pinpoints the most common writing difficulties found in higher education and explains the grammar rules in clear, concise terms with examples. In particular, this book addresses common issues with apostrophes, commas, misplaced modifiers, and pronoun agreement. The primary goal of this book is to get you, the student, to a point where you understand and can incorporate these rules into your own writing as fast as possible. After all, college (and life) is busy enough without having to relearn all of your English grammar from scratch!

57 of 65 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Resource! By Sonya Jeffords Chess is a game that I have loved for a long time. As a child, I used to play against my dad and my brother. I joined the chess club at my middle school, and later joined the chess club and eventually chess team of my high school. On the chess team, I played in local school tournaments, city tournaments, the state tournament and even the national chess tournament one year. Our team placed 2nd in our division at the state tournament, but we were close to last in our division at nationals. It was all fun, and a great learning experience. I loved playing competitively, and I missed it when high school was over. After high school, I didn't play chess much anymore. I got married, started having kids, and was overall too distracted for chess. It wasn't on my priority list, and it was barely on my radar, but when my oldest daughter was turning four, suddenly it seemed important again. I really wanted to teach both of my children chess. Early education is important to me. My daughter was already learning piano, math, and reading, and I realized that she was definitely old enough and ready to start learning the basics of chess.Despite not having any books on the subject, I started teaching Acacia and her younger sister Jasmine about chess, to the best of my ability. Teaching the names of the pieces to them was easy, but beyond that, it quickly became rather difficult. I remembered learning about/hearing about 3 year olds who could play chess, and I thought there had to be more information out there on teaching such a complicated game to a preschooler. That was when my Amazon searching began.I searched on Amazon for books on teaching chess, and clicked on nearly every link that popped up. Book after book after book was for teaching children ages 8 and up, or 9 and up, 12 and up, or (rarely) 6/7 and up. None were on teaching 2 and up, 3 and up, or 4 and up, until finally I came across Chess is Child's Play, for teaching ages 2 and up. After reading on it for a few minutes, I discovered that the book had not even been released yet. At that point, being a book-reviewer, I looked up the publisher's web address to request a review copy. I actually didn't find the contact information I needed from the publisher's website, so I contacted one of the authors, Laura Sherman, and she was kind enough to request the review copy for me (and also to do an author interview with me!).In the meantime, I continued struggling along with trying to teach my daughter chess on my own. When the book arrived, I was immediately impressed with the physical quality. This is a hard-cover book, well-made, with great paper quality, and the diagrams/pictures are large and easy to see. The book has a friendly feel to it.When I started reading, I noticed early on that a lot of the ideas and methods I'd been using with my daughter already were actually included in this book. It felt good to know I was on the right track. At the same time, the book also pointed out many of the exact same mistakes I had made in teaching! It was almost as if the authors had been watching me, and then documented my "common mistakes" such as trying to teach the pawn too soon, and teaching other concepts out of order. It is easy to see that the authors really know what they are talking about in this book and that they truly have experience teaching chess to young children. The order of things in this book is logical, and makes a lot more sense than what I had come up with on my own. This book is not specifically for preschool age children, but is actually written for children of any age. It will help you teach your child chess whether you are experienced or have never played the game before yourself. The lessons are simple enough for young children, but captivating enough to keep the attention of older children, and parents as well. The first three chapters are Why Chess?, What You Should Expect from the Lessons, and Tips on Teaching. These three chapters formed an excellent introduction to the game. The next chapter is Special Exercises for Two to Four-Year-Olds.After that, each chess piece is learned individually, and has its own chapter. The pieces are taught in a specific order, which makes them easier to learn. In between some of the chapters on the chess pieces, there is a chapter on taking the other players' pieces, and one on how to attack and defend pieces. These concepts are revisited again later in the book. After learning how to move the King, but before learning to move the Knight and Pawn, there is a chapter on Check and a chapter on Checkmate. The order of the pieces and concepts made a lot of sense, and the authors make a note now and then to remind parents not to bring up certain ideas or concepts yet. The instructions in this book are very clear, and easy to follow. After learning all the pieces and the basics of attacking, defending, check and checkmate, the authors included a chapter on the difference between legal and illegal moves. Then there is a chapter on how to set up the chess board, and a chapter on playing that first real game. All the basics have been covered at this point, and now the book includes some of the more complicated concepts to learn and teach. Castling comes next after playing your first game with the chess board set up properly, and then there are tips for opening strategies. The value of the pieces is covered, with tips for teaching this to older children and tips for teaching it to younger children. There is a whole chapter written on how your own pieces can get in your way, and then more on attacking and defending, going a little more in depth on these topics. Getting out of check has its own chapter, and of course more tips on spotting and forming checkmate is covered, and a chapter about stalemates and draws. One thing I love about this book is that it is full of mini-games to play with your child. Especially for a younger child, the process of learning to play a full game can take several months. In the meantime, simply teaching lessons would get boring rather quickly, and I would imagine many children would lose interest. The mini-games in this book solve that dilemma by creating interactive games you can play every step of the way. Again, with the mini-games, some were exactly what I had been using, or planning to use, to teach my daughter, and some showed me that other ideas of mine would have possibly been the opposite of helpful. The authors' insight and experience showed well with these mini-games, and really the entire book.I received this book as an experienced chess player. I already knew how to play chess, but this book helped me learn to better teach it. Chess is Child's Play filled in a lot of gaps in my teaching. Sometimes when you are really good at something, you'll overlook the smaller details that beginners need to pay attention to. This book really helped point out to me some of the concepts that are difficult for beginners, but which I take for granted and would generally consider obvious. It has helped me learn to slow down a little bit more and have more patience, and take my time, with teaching chess. This book will help you go at your child's pace, and help you to understand what your child's pace is. The authors have tips on understanding whether your child comprehends what you are teaching, and there are Troubleshooting Tips at the end of each chapter, with brief questions and answers about concepts your child may be struggling with, or getting bored with.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. After this, I have ambitions of starting a local chess club for kids. If all goes well, you'll certainly be hearing about it here in the future!

Father Geek's "Chess is Child's Play" Book Review By Father Geek Chess is Child's Play: Teaching Techniques that Work is one of the better books about Chess I have come across that focuses on children. The For Dummies series of books tend to do much of what is being provided in this book, but this title handles the reader with a much kinder and gentler glove. This is important to note because the entire reason for the book's existence is to help teach a very complicated game to young developing minds. Learning anything new can be challenging and stressful, which Chess is by design. This book tempers the game's complexity with simplicity. I am reminded of the quotation by Creighton Abrams when he said, "When eating an elephant take one bite at a time." That is exactly what this book is all about and does well. The game is introduced in small portions and time is allowed for the student to digest it before a new bite is offered. For some Gamer Geeks, this book will be of little value. Either because they have no interest in Chess or they will teach the game to their Child Geeks in a way that personally suits them. For everyone else, including teachers, non-gamer Parent Geeks, and even people who simply want to learn how to play the game on their own, Chess is Child's Play: Teaching Techniques that Work will be an enjoyable and useful read. At the very least, it's a useful resource to quickly familiarize oneself with the game's rules. My copy now holds a place of honor among my children's book collection, accessible and ready to teach the next Gamer Geek generation the classic game of Kings.Full review available at http://fathergeek.com/chess-is-childs-play/This book was given to Father Geek as a review copy. Father Geek was not paid, bribed, wined, dined, or threatened in vain hopes of influencing this review. Such is the statuesque and legendary integrity of Father Geek.

By Austin If you want to teach your kids to play chess, this book gives a straightforward and pragmatic approach to teach you, the parent, how to teach your kids chess. It is not a book to give to your children and send them to their room with a bunch of pieces and checkered board. Rather, it offers an approach that minimizes frustration, capitalizes on the strengths of a child's mind, and delivers far more than simply learning how to play a game. It guides parents not just through the rules and how the pieces move, but in understanding how kids learn, grow, and behave in the process. As Ben Franklin put it in 1750, "The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions; for life is a kind of Chess, in which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with, and in which there is a vast variety of good and ill events, that are, in some degree, the effect of prudence, or the want of it." Sherman and Kilpatrick give simple and meaningful instruction that can be used to teach children both the idle amusement of chess AND those valuable qualities of the mind that are so useful in the course of human life."Chess is Child's Play" offers a new approach and a straightforward set of tools for bonding with your kids, while teaching them a skill set that will be with them for life! Three cheers for "Chess is Child's Play" and a copy to each of my friends with young children!!

Fans of Ian Rankin and Lee Child will relish the latest thriller from the author of Thou Shalt Kill—the second novel in a heart-pounding series featuring hardened homicide detective Franco Patrese.Daniel Blake more than delivers on the promise of his acclaimed thriller Thou Shalt Kill, bringing back detective Franco Patrese in City of the Dead, “a blood-soaked, full-throttle descent into hell and one of the best thrillers you will read this or any other year” (Lorenzo Carcaterra). “You’re not tainted. You’re not one of them. I need you alone. . . .” The woman who contacted Franco Patrese was the ultimate New Orleans society belle: beautiful, seductive, cunning, and, in this case, desperate. The personal assistant to the city’s most powerful man, she had to meet Patrese in secret. Fearful whispers of “sacrifices” were all Patrese could glean; she didn’t live long enough to tell him any more. Patrese had come to New Orleans, buffeted by the winds of fate, bearing a pain that cops know too well. His native Pittsburgh was still in his bones, while a disaster on a tropical island had shaken his soul. In the thick, hot, exotic world of the Crescent City he began to come alive again. But now he cannot afford to be the new guy, the guy on the outside looking in. A second body has been found, just like the first: Dismembered. A snake, an axe head, a mirror. And blood. A whole lot of blood. Patrese’s partner is a devout New Orleans native with a past she keeps private. By Selma Fawcett’s side, Patrese races in the footsteps of a serial killer who seems steeped in voodoo and linked to a priestess who practices her dark arts in the clear light of day—and the glare of the media. The more he learns about the victims and their connections, the more bizarre the case becomes. Then a veteran-turned-drug dealer takes him one step further, deep into a realm in which murder is only one kind of perversion. Patrese and Selma, traveling from the French Quarter to Natchez and the bayou, don’t realize they are out of time. A tide of corruption and secrecy is rising all around them. They are the tainted ones: two good cops, targeted by a force more malevolent than any one before.

City of the Dead (Franco Patrese), by Daniel Blake

Review "Stunning. A Chinatown for the 21st century." – Charles Cumming, New York Times bestselling author"City of the Dead starts with a tsunami and ends with a hurricane, and nothing in between slows it down. A smart, scary, and relentless storm overtaking a city held hostage by greed and disaster." – Andrew Gross, New York Times bestselling author"Hugely entertaining."– Sean Black, author of the Ryan Lock series"Daniel Blake makes New Orleans the setting for a story that's as hot, steamy and shot through with voodoo madness as the city itself. As the victims of a ritualistic serial killer mount up, City of the Dead is not just a first-rate crime thriller, but also an impassioned, powerfully evocative attack on social injustice, racial prejudice and the unfettered power of the rich. Highly recommended!" – Tom Cain, author of The Accident Man and Dictator"City of the Dead is a fast-paced, blood-soaked, full-throttle descent into hell and one of the best thrillers you will read this or any other year. Daniel Blake weaves an intricate plot with the skill set of a top-tier surgeon, his dialogue rich and spot-on and his characters--both good and gut-wrenchingly evil--full-bodied and as real and fresh as morning rain. It is a novel that quite simply demands to be read. To do otherwise would be a crime." – Lorenzo Carcaterra, author of Sleepers and Midnight Angels"Blake keeps the dialogue razor sharp and the action hammer blunt while tantalizing readers with a Sherlockian thriller that turns the modern detective story on its head. If ever there was a character ripe for transition to the big screen, Franco Patrese is it." -- Rupert Wyatt, director of Rise of the Planet of the Apes"Incendiary . . . Blake's edgy, cynical take on the Katrina tragedy blends easily with Patrese's increasingly desperate quest for justice and survival." -- Publishers Weekly

About the Author Daniel Blake is the pseudonym of the bestselling, acclaimed author Boris Starling, best known for New York Times bestsellers Storm and Messiah. Blake has worked for a corporation that specializes in kidnapping negotiations and confidential investigations, and he was also a reporter for England’s The Sun and The Daily Telegraph. The writer incorporates every concievable device of class envy and corporate greed fantasy that creates the most imporbabale ending for what could have been an otherwise intriguing tale. The introductory premise of this story turns out to be nothing but a ploy (albeit cleverly done) that draws the reader in to believing the thrust of this story is about some deep-seated cultural evil.An extreme disappointment overall. Don't waste your money.

Lignor When this book begins, Franco Patrese, a police detective from Pittsburgh is taking a well-deserved rest in Khao Lak, Thailand and enjoying himself at long last. He is on the beach walking when he notices the odd way the surf is acting and pulling the water way out to sea. Patrese has seen this before and knows that a Tsunami is coming and tries to warn the beachcombers. He helps as much as he can but there are many casualties including a young woman that Patrese had spent some time with. When he arrives back in Pittsburgh, he doesn't get a very warm reception. He becomes the scapegoat in a crime that goes bad; a crime that kills his partner. Franco decides that he will look elsewhere for work and calls a friend in the FBI. He gets hired by the Agent in Charge in New Orleans, Louisiana. When Patrese arrives at his new job, he learns that New Orleans is being inundated with some horrible crimes that look like they are inspired by Voodoo rituals of some kind. He comes in contact with a very wealthy man, St. John Varden in the city and the man's son, St. John Varden, Jr., who is the present Governor of Louisiana. When Franco starts work he is partnered with detective Selma Fawcett who is not fond of the FBI and tries to get rid of Franco at every turn. The first case that they partner on is the murder of Cindy Rojciewicz, who is the elder Varden's Personal Assistant. She was killed in a horrific fashion that included dismemberment and a very large snake. There are more killings in the future and as these two try and figure them out sometimes the murder scenes get caught up in Voodoo, politics, drugs and some very interesting characters, including a lady who takes care of BIG snakes. But the snakes that crawl are not as bad as the snakes that walk on two legs. There are a few surprises but they are mostly things that crop up in schemes to change the city as Hurricane Katrina comes down on New Orleans full force. There is the usual political corruption and horror for the people who believe in the occult. This is a good story but a bit convoluted in some parts. For readers who are familiar with New Orleans and the culture there, it will make sense. Sometimes it's hard to read through some of the difficult scenes of crime and corruption. The book starts with a tsunami and ends with a hurricane and there's a lot of murder and mayhem in between.

Gripping Thriller with Dark NOLA Setting By Claire CITY OF THE DEAD is the second novel in a series featuring hardened but likeable homicide detective Franco Patrese. It's a complex thriller set in New Orleans about a serial killer with a dark link to a voodoo priestess. This book had me on the edge of my seat, and I couldn't get enough of Blake's atmospheric portrayal of New Orleans on the brink of Hurricane Katrina. Highly recommended!

By Charlene Mattson I got the book for free through Audible for the purposes of reviewing itThe book itself is a fairly normal sort for its type-that is, YA fantasy and it was a bit too young for my tastes, but certainly the younger me would have thoroughly enjoyed it. Rich details and an interesting take on dragons made for a good listen. The audio book is also well put together with a great narrator.I would recommend this for anyone looking to get their tweens into fantasy or for tweens/young teens already into fantasy, particularly if they enjoy things like Patricia C. Wrede (Enchanted Forest Chronicles in particular) or things like Bruce Coville's Unicorn series (can't remember the name of it now).It wasn't precisely my cup of tea, but it is definitely perfect for its audience, so well worth picking up through Audible or wherever else it may be sold.

The skies turn green and the dead start walking, seeking the death of any human. Months after the fall of civilization, Brian sets out to discover this new world created by the event known as Deadfall. Book 2 of the Deadfall Series Zombies flooded Carolina Beach and Brian was left with no choice but to flee. What he left behind, was more than he could deal with. On board the boat, the One Star Wonder, Brian and his group are headed towards Haiti with only a small note from his father's journal as a guide: Abraham. There is only a destination ahead of them, and what he continues to discover about the world after the rise of the undead only serves to create more questions. Between North Carolina and Haiti is a lot of ocean, land and islands. The living continue to try to survive and the dead continue to try to destroy. Brian must fight the darkness, both within and without. What he sails towards, on the Caribbean island, will unravel an ancient secret he is closely intertwined with, whether he knows it or not. The hunt continues.

Fantastic follow up book By Fleury A great follow up to book 1,Brian and the friends he has meet during his travels after leaving his sanctuary continue on their quest to find out what his Father meant in his Journal. Of course this is no easy feet and they meet with both those who are evil and kind on his travels to Haiti. Brian finds out things that not only answer questions he has but create more. Some great twists and turns and keeps you on your toes. This is turning into one hell of a ride and I can't wait for more.

I am also into basic level prepping (i.e. preparing for natural disasters and localized problems.) When a friend recommended this book I thought I would check it out. Other than the use of way too many commas, the book is a fantastic read. I want to visit the locations, and check out the inside of a water tower to see if that would even work.Fantastic job Richard!

He has created a world so large and multifaceted that it far exceeds the parameters you expect to find in zombie fiction. There is so much potential for story here that one can only guess as to the size and scope the author intends for this series in the future. Truly unique in this genre that I love. Don't miss it.

One year after the Indian Ocean tsunami, Angela finds herself flying into the devastated region of Banda Aceh as a researcher for the UN. Enthusiastic and committed, the young American woman arrives at a place swarming with young aid workers and she soon enters a world that is nothing like what she has known. Post-tsunami Banda Aceh is a unique bubble where everyday experiences like house hunting or going to a coffee shop are wracked with complications and a work trip can end up at a football game played by elephants. While Angela rapidly becomes disillusioned with the NGO life, she has to cope with falling in love in a region where men and women are traditionally segregated. Soon Angela finds herself wondering if she will have to choose between love and work.

By David Lawrence This is a heartwarming story for any reader, but those working in development will recognize the cultural, social and work-related complexities of life in far-flung, difficult environments. Those of us who worked in Banda Aceh after the 2004 tsunami will recognize a world that no longer exists. It was a short, frenetic time, when Aceh was full of developmental organizations stumbling over each other while trying to help the province get back up on its feet.Like the character James, I loved living there, and I am grateful to the author for capturing that time so perfectly in this wonderful book.

You can be anywhere and not know what’s lurking behind you until it’s too late. Almost from the beginning, the reader is embroiled in suspense. It’s a twisted tale that shows how disconnected from reality a person can get. It also shows the terror that evil can evoke.Andrew Lancaster is a young man who has a lot on his shoulders. He’s trying to have a normal life in a world that’s gotten very chaotic. He has an enemy that’s evil personified. Our author shows that no one can consider themselves safe anymore. It shows the length someone will go to in order to inflict pain on someone else. This book is like the first time I watched “Poltergeist” – I needed a pillow to hide behind. But it’s also like a guilty pleasure – you may put the book down for a while but you can’t help yourself and have to pick it up again. If you’re looking for a read to get you out of your comfort zone then you’ve found that here.I feel that if you’ve never read this author before, this would be a great start but… But if you really want to understand his characters, you do need to start at the beginning of this series. The ending wraps up the series so if you’re even thinking of reading Project Justice and Awakening, I wouldn’t read Pandemonium first. Our author is a very creative person. With the way he’s developed all his characters and his scenes. He makes his story fit into what is currently going on in the world. And he also makes you question how real it is. You can just picture every event as it occurs. After finishing this series, the next thing you have to decide is what you’re going to read next.

The Phoenix, Andrew Lancaster, and his cohorts are hiding from the The Revolution in New York. Their only hope is The Reaper stays in hiding. Unfortunately, this enemy isn't finished and wants revenge on them and everyone they love. The author begins the story right away. The reader is instantly whisked into the mind of the demented Reaper. There is explosive action on almost on the first page. The reader is then given a quick synopsis of the last two books. So the series can be read in sequence, or read individually if desired.Overall, Pandemonium is a well written book. The author created a fast paced action packed story. It has romance, revenge and a crazy twist in the end. It's a complete story, however, the author leaves the reader wondering if the Phoenix's adventures are truly over.

By Kimbra Townsend I recieved a free copy of this book in excnange for an honest review.Evil is everywhere, according to this book and it creeps up on you when you least expect it. I was riveted from the very start of this tale about how evil can twist your reality into a swirling sea of horror.Andrew Lancaster just wants a normal life which is difficult in the chaotic world that surrounds him. This book personifies the nature of evil and how it will target and destroy anyone in its path. I couldn’t put it down. This is the third book in this series and honestly, its best to start with book one so that you have the full understanding of the plot and characters. After you read Project Justice and Awakening, Pandemonium will complete the thrilling suspense series.

In epic space battles that define a universe, there are the lives of the people that call it their home. Spellbook Studios, the company that brought you The Infinite Black game, gives you a glimpse into some of those lives. See their universe as you have never seen it before. Voyage into “The Infinite Black.” In the early days of deep space exploration, the Corporations controlled everything. Finding it easier to plunder the resources they wanted from planets that were unable to resist, they created the first of the Harvester Fleets. These vast fleets would find, conquer and strip planets of their precious resources, leaving a trail of broken, lifeless shells in their wake. Harvester Fleet Septimus Decius was dispatched to a rich target, ripe for the harvest. They never suspected that everything would change when they reached Haakon Prime. Ambushed by the enigmatic race known as the Wyrd, they fought a desperate battle to survive. Even their powerful rivals, the Wyrd, were not prepared for the chain reaction of cataclysmic events that would result. Centuries later, radically different crews on two separate ships would discover that their fates were intertwined with the Lost Fleet. Destiny would bring them all to Haakon Prime, but it will be their choices that will define them. Will they join the Lost Fleet?

The Lost Legion: Perdition's Flames: Book One of the Lost Legion Series (Volume 1), by D. A. Roberts

About the Author D.A. Roberts was born in the small town of Lebanon, Missouri. Growing up on the farm gave him plenty of opportunities to cultivate a fertile imagination. Encouraged by his mother, he dreamed of one day becoming a famous writer. An avid reader, D.A. enjoys reading more than watching television. A diverse career path has given him a unique view of the world. From soldier to factory worker, from bouncer to lab technician, and from Security Officer to Corrections Officer. Having worn many different hats evolves a very different perspective. He draws on all of these experiences to bring his writing to life on a very human level. He married Annette in the summer of 1993 and has been happily married, ever since. Three teenaged sons keep them both busy. Nathan, Nic and Noah are his pride and joy. They have an English Mastiff named Xander, who is a big part of their lives. D.A. loves to camp, hunt, fish, hike and Geocache. He also enjoys old-school pen and paper role-playing games. When not writing or on duty as a Corrections Officer, he enjoys spending time with his family. A good cup of coffee, a warm fire and a good book are his guilty pleasures.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Roberts takes on a new genre... and kills it! By Mike Donner So little known fact... I am not much of a sci-fi reader. Mostly because of the science part. I often get lost in the science and math in the hard science used in a lot of sci-fi to make it more believable. So yeah I don't do a lot of it. But when a friend who happens to be a great writer asks you to review his new sci-fi novel you put on your big boy pants and suck it up and prepare to Google a lot.OK so to start this book is the first based on an online game called The Infinite Black by spellbook.com. Taking place in the distant future where the earth has been abandoned and humans have colonized the stars we get some background as to how the universe works with corporations basically taking the place of governments. Each corporation has adopted an ancient idea as the foundation of its structure. For example The Fabretti corp. structured itself after the Roman Empire. Other after the Samurai etc. Then we get to the crux of the story where a Fabretti ship and its crew come under attack and while trying to escape they get caught in a repeating time loop and only one character seems to realize this. We then jump ahead about 200 years and meet two other crews and get to know them, one being pirates and the other a freighter and we see how they are involved in the overall story. I don't want to go into anything more because I want you to read it and enjoy it like I did.So despite my reservations because of the science I really did enjoy this book. I had a little trouble at first oddly enough not because of the science but because of the Latin and the use of ancient Roman titles. It seemed a weird combination of future and past but it eventually evened out for me. I really enjoyed the cast of characters from the other two ships and especially the captain of the freighter ship. They definitely had a Firefly feel about them. Over all I really liked this bookNow comes the part I hate... pointing out what didn't work for me. The main character from the Fabretti ship talks about another crew member and how he is attracted to her. At points it felt like he knew nothing about her but then we find out they have been having a secret affair so it seemed contradictory and confusing. For example he says something about her having an accent he couldn't quite place but if he was involved with her then it shouldn't be a mystery. Another problem is the titles and language, while there were footnotes at the end for some it wasn't complete. I did have some problems with the science as far as the warp drive for lack of better term but eventually I got beyond it. The biggest issue I had isn't really a huge deal and it's that I wanted more background on everyone. On everything. I just felt like I was missing some critical points and I am hoping that future books give me those details. So despite a few faults this is a great start for Roberts in a new genre and I hope to see more in the near future.

By Bill Osborne The first thought that came to my mind when I saw the book was: "D.A. is trying hands at science fiction. This is going to be interesting!" I simply was NOT prepared to be blown away like I was with just how good his first attempt at this genre is! He draws you right in from the start! Being a student of history, I loved the throwback to the past such as The Fabretti Corporation patterning itself after the Roman Empire. The way he describes the characters is first rate. Even in the slower parts of the book, you are reeled in & cannot escape. I have read the book 3 times so far & I like it even more each time. If his sci fi work is THIS GOOD for a first attempt, then I can guarantee he's going to have a long career writing!!!!

No waiting 50 pages for the story to reveal itself. You are just in it from the beginning. I was very pleased the tradition continued with this first sci-fi novel. I admittedly don't read a lot of sci-fi. I find I have a more particular taste in sci-fi than I do in some other genres so I'm hesitant to take a leap of faith on a sci-fi book. For those who have read DA's zombie series, this is very different in most ways and yet it is still a DA book. The aspects of his writing I enjoy most are all present but he clearly has the ability to write multiple genres without it seeming like he dumped a zombie story on a spaceship and called it sci-fi. This story held my interest through a billion annoying interruptions lol. Sci-fi can be confusing, ridiculous, too faux-science-y but I didn't find that to be the case here at all. DA's writing is, I feel, about the characters of which this story has an amazing set. He is also able to create a fully-formed world for them to inhabit. It is simply a great read. I am on my 2nd trip to the future with DA hoping this time I will have fewer interruptions so I can fully immerse myself in the adventure.PS: I am not familiar with the Infinite Black game so it is definitely not a requirement and unless you're told this has any connection to a game you would have absolutely no idea.Sidebar: It has been said, and I agree (and like it), that the Ragnarok books have an FPS game feel. This book, which is in some way connected to a game has absolutely no "game feel". If you read and weren't "on board" with the game-feel of Raganrok or were discouraged from reading that series because of a review that mentions it, please don't let that discourage you from purchasing this title. Likewise if you loved the "game feel" of Ragnarok and are worried that you will miss it here, you won't. :-)

Having been drawn to the wild for a number of years, young Luke McKinney is forced to leave 1839 St. Louis for the North Country even sooner than he expected to go. At seventeen, along with a female companion and an elderly father figure, he is literally running for his life. With the law pursuing him and the wilderness unforgiving, he finds himself caught up in a survival system that has nothing to do with civilization or laws. Then the unthinkable happens, the love of his life is taken from him. It is during the pursuit of her captors that Luke finds a strength and determination that will shape his moral existence for the remainder of his life. This is a trilogy of books that spans the lives of Luke McKinney and Breanne Buyere, their undying love, through hell and high water, for over fifty years. Daring, thrilling, historic, romantic... What else is there... UNFORGETABLE!

Fantastic Historical Western Drama By cschmidt This got my attention from the very first page, detailing the lives of a 17 year old boy and the 16 year old girl he was in love with in 1839, and goes on to talk about their lives together and apart (apart not through choice but by kidnapping) then goes on up to when Wyoming achieves statehood. It full of great adventure, undying love, great loss and great joy, and one book I will treasure in my library. If you like historical novels of the old west I would highly recommend this to you. I'm just so sorry it had to end. The way this novelist writes brings you right into the story, and you can't help caring about Luke and Breanne and their unique family. Thank you for such a memorable book.
