Those who accept American exceptionalism will find this great read a reaffirmation of fundamental principles of the republic By Richard Larsen Steeped in the classical-liberal ideals that America was founded upon, Will Edwinson is a master of the political novel genre. Those who accept American exceptionalism will find this great read a reaffirmation of fundamental principles of the republic, couched in a gripping, yet very human tale of intrigue and calculated risk. And for those who don’t, this will be a revelatory insight into contrarian political thought that is at the heart of the divisiveness and polarization prevalent in America today. Are we, as a nation, headed toward this type of ideological division, or can the schisms in our society be healed? That is the compelling question each reader must decide.

Plausible Senario By Stephanie Johnson Although this book is written in third person omniscient POV, it is a character driven story, not a plot driven story. The narrator plays a minor part adding small bits of narrative along the way, with the exception of chapter two, where he has a somewhat lengthy monologue laying out the foundation of the story. Other than that, it’s a fast light read where the story is told by the characters through their dialogue. One can almost see this story playing out as a movie. The author takes the reader on an interesting adventure of political intrigue through numerous subplots with a little twist featuring a smattering of science fiction, a love interest, and an underground (shadow revolution.) The back cover of the novel asks the question: “What would life be like if there were a 21st century style revolution and civil war in the United States?” You’ll have to read the novel to find out. Some might say this story is taken right out of today’s news headlines.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It Could Happen By L. Sand If you pay attention to politics in the U. S., and what seems to be a growing division in the country, you might agree that the scenario laid out by Will Edwinson in Shadow Revolution isn’t too far-fetched. At some point in the future, it isn’t inconceivable that the USA might undergo another civil war that could once again break apart this great nation. This thriller blends politics and technology with a touch of science fiction to create a story that’s disturbing on many levels because it could very well happen (except perhaps the revolutionaries’ secret weapon). Nevertheless, it’s a story that will make you look at the present undercurrent of unrest flowing through our nation and wonder what might happen if someone actually started a shadow revolution.

This vintage book contains the second volume of Alexandre Dumas’s famous adventure novel, “The Count of Monte Cristo”. Set in early nineteenth century France during the time of the Bourbon Restoration, it tells the story of a man’s wrongful imprisonment, his escape, and his indefatigable quest for revenge. A masterful tale of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness, ”The Count of Monte Cristo” is rightfully one the most famous novels of all time, and deserves a place on every bookshelf. Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "The Three Musketeers" and "Chicot the Jester". Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his extravagant lifestyle. His novels have been translated into nearly a hundred different languages, and have inspired over 200 motion pictures. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing this antiquarian book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

A Journey to the Centre of the Earth (Annotated), by Jules Verne

Review "The reason Verne is still read by millions today is simply that he was one of the best storytellers who ever lived."  —Arthur C. Clarke"Verne has left us an extraordinary book. . . . It has brought delight to generations of readers, and will for many more. There is nothing so rare as the chance to take an impossible journey, and to believe it so powerfully that we wonder if we will make it out alive. That's magic. And that's Verne's gift."  —Michael Crichton

Review "In 1864 Jules Verne published 'Journey to the Center of the Earth,' the charming narrative of the adventures of a party of three, led by a German professor of mineralogy - the irascible mad-scientist type - who have lowered themselves into an extinct volcanic crater."

Review "The professor has a nephew; he's his research partner. They have this theory, he's slightly mad but they must go and find out [if it is true]. Actual classic mythology has said that Mt. Sneffels [a volcano with a glacier covering its summit in western Iceland] is a portal to the center of the earth."

There are more than one translations into english, one with the Main character's name as Harry, the other as Axel.I read the 'Harry' version first, but only partway through as it was terrible! I thought Verne was a bad writter or something. But, when I was older, I found another copy (Puffin Classics btw), and I thought I'd give it another go. That was one of the best books I had ever read, it funny and imaginative. The characters even had character!Well, I looked into it, and compared my new version with the first book I had read and both of them with the original. Mine was pretty close. The names were kept the same, most of the sentences were similar in structure (so that someone like me who can't read french could tell that they were the same book). The 'Harry version' however, invented entire chapters out of thin air, discarded others and changed significant plot points. I hope this helps some of you decide which one to get, and that there is more than one translation. If the book starts with:"ON 24 May 1863, a Sunday, my uncle, Professor Lidenbrock, came rushing back towards his little house at No.19 Konigstrasse, one of the oldest streets..."You know you have the good version.Otherwise, I love this book and would recomend it to anyone, whether a science fiction fan or not.

PENGUIN/PUFFIN EDITION: A particularly good, modern translation By Librarian [NOTE: Although written for the Penguin/Puffin edition, this review may be attached to other editions as well. If so, much of its information is still pertinent.]This Penguin/Puffin Classics translation (by Robert Baldick) of Verne's wonderful book is absolutely terrific. It is accurate and fun to read. (Sample it to see for yourself.) Of course, readers must make allowances for the book's old-fashioned content and style, and inevitably some (unable to do so) may feel it is too descriptive or that the plot advances too slowly. Hopefully others will find it quaint but exciting, its fabulous descriptions to be marveled at as they vicariously travel with the main characters on a once-in-a-lifetime journey deep inside the earth. Fanciful? Yes. Fun? Definitely. Memorable? Forever.Any true translation (such as in this Puffin Classic) rightly identifies the professor as "Lidenbrock" or "Liedenbrock" NOT as "Hardwigg," and his young partner as "Axel" NOT "Harry." (That is how you can easily distinguish the real vs. a false, anonymous translation that, sadly, is still being sold as if it were the real thing; it isn't even a translation but an adaptation, a total rewrite with different names of characters and numerous plot alterations.) The extent of the problem and confusion becomes obvious when one reads the many reviews associated with this and other editions of this title; notice how many refer to Hardwigg and Harry. Sadly, these people, praising the bogus version as if it were Verne's, have not read the real thing. Don't YOU be fooled. This very sound Baldick translation comes as close (in English) to what Verne actually wrote (in French) to tell his story. The old F.A. Malleson translation also gets it right, but in modern times two translations particularly stand out: this one one by Robert Baldick and one by William Butcher. They are both good, the difference mainly being a matter of style. Some prefer Butcher; I happen to prefer Baldick.Don't let the fact that Baldick's translation here appears in a children's imprint deter you from considering it; this is not a simplified "kiddy" version. It appeared first in 1965 as an adult Penguin book, and twenty years later (unchanged) as a Puffin book, and now as an ebook. Butcher's is more recent and, as he is a noted Verne scholar, his credentials certainly carry weight. But that doesn't necessarily make him a better wordsmith. We read Verne primarily for fun and for the thrill of adventure. Baldick's translation enables us to do just that.I highly recommend Baldick's translation in this Puffin edition to anyone, child or adult, especially since its relatively low price is remarkably enticing for a copyrighted, modern translaton rather than an old, public domain one. But whichever edition of this wonderful novel you may be considering for purchase, and no matter who translates it, give it the Lidenbrock & Axel (READ it) vs. Hardwigg & Harry (AVOID it) test to be certain you are reading the actual story Verne intended.NOTE: If price is an issue, you may wish to consider the aforementoned, sound, older translation by Malleson; it can be obtained as a public domain freebie in the Kindle store by searching under: "free books verne voyage au centre de la terre. English." (The OTHER public domain freebie version is under "free books verne journey to the center of the earth" and is the FALSE one. If you wish, download both freebies and compare; the differences are obvious.)

In the story, Professor Hardwigg and his nephew Harry discover an ancient parchment by an alchemist named Arne Saknussemm. They travel to Iceland and climb an extinct volcano called Sneffels. With them is the Icelandic hunter Hans. They journey into the center of the earth, in which Harry gets lost. They come upon and ocean and cross it. While they are on the sea they witness a battle of ancient sea monsters. Eventually they are thrown out of a volcano on Stromboli, an island in Italy. This was a wonderful book, but sometimes it went into too much detail. Still, a classic five star book. I don't see why anyone would give it 4 1/2 stars. It is simply absurd. I recommened this book to anyone with a good imagination.

A Tramp Abroad is a work of travel literature by American author Mark Twain, published in 1880. The book details a journey by the author, with his friend Harris (a character created for the book, and based on his closest friend, Joseph Twichell), through central and southern Europe. While the stated goal of the journey is to walk most of the way, the men find themselves using other forms of transport as they traverse the continent. The book is often thought to be an unofficial sequel to an earlier Twain travel book, The Innocents Abroad. As the two men make their way through Germany, the Alps, and Italy, they encounter situations made all the more humorous by their reactions to them. The narrator (Twain) plays the part of the American tourist of the time, believing that he understands all that he sees, but in reality understanding none of it.

A Tramp Abroad (Annotated), by Mark Twain

Amazon.com Review Nearly nine decades after his death, Mark Twain remains an international icon. His white-maned, mustachioed image is instantly identifiable throughout the world, the very picture of probity and high spirits (which explains why he's become the poster boy for products as diverse as beer, billiard tables, sewing machines, pizza, and real estate). Perhaps more importantly, Twain's books have retained all their power to amuse and enrage. How is it possible for the creator of a 19th-century "boy's holiday book" (Twain's own description of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) to raise so many contemporary hackles? The answer is that Twain is a contemporary writer. Not, of course, from a chronological point of view--he was born in Missouri in 1835 and died in 1910 (having insisted that "annihilation has no terrors for me"). But Twain was the first writer to elevate the American vernacular to a high art. Sidestepping the starched-shirt diction of his peers, he created an idiom that resembled (but did not precisely duplicate) the wayward, slangy, ungrammatical music of American conversation. No serious reader of Twain will want to do without the Oxford Mark Twain. This 29-volume leviathan includes not only the major works but also a treasure trove of essays and short pieces, many of them unavailable for decades. Throw in the introductions to each volume (by such heavyweights as Toni Morrison, Kurt Vonnegut, Cynthia Ozick, Gore Vidal, George Plimpton, Bobbie Ann Mason, and Walter Mosley), as well as the original illustrations, and you've got the book bargain of the millennium.

Review ''[A Tramp Abroad] is delicious, whether you open it at the sojourn in Heidelberg, or the voyage down the Neckar on a raft, or mountaineering in Switzerland, or the excursion beyond the Alps into Italy.'' --William Dean Howells''Twain was the first writer to elevate the American vernacular to a high art. Sidestepping the starched-shirt diction of his peers, he created an idiom that resembled (but did not precisely duplicate) the wayward, slangy, ungrammatical music of American conversation.'' --Amazon.com editorial review

From the Inside Flap In "A Tramp Abroad, Mark Twain's unofficial sequel to "The Innocents Abroad, the author records his hilarious and diverse observations and insights while on a fifteen-month walking trip through Central Europe and the Alps. "Here you have Twain's inimitable mix," writes Dave Eggers in his Introduction, "of the folksy and the effortlessly erudite, his unshakable good sense and his legendary wit, his knack for the easy relation of a perfect anecdote, and some achingly beautiful nature writing." This Modern Library Paperback Classic reproduces the text of the first American edition and features new explanatory notes and a critical Afterword by Kerry Driscoll, professor of English at Saint Joseph College in Connecticut.

36 of 36 people found the following review helpful. An underrated book that at times is absolutely hilarious By Paul H "A Tramp Abroad" is a humorous account of Mark Twain's travels in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. It is part travel guide, part commentary on European culture, and part tall tale. Like many of Twain's less-known works, "A Tramp Abroad" is rather uneven -- the chapters in the book range from rather boring to laugh-out-loud funny. Yet on balance, the humorous moments make up for the dull moments, and the majority of the less humorous chapters are still interesting. Apart from a few slow chapters, it provides a good read from beginning to end. Some of the highlights of "A Tramp Abroad" are Twain's exaggerated account of his ascent of the Riffelberg (a mountain in the Swiss Alps), his comments on the peculiarities of the German language, and a hilarious episode in which Twain spends half an hour pretending to know a woman who remembers him though he doesn't remember her.I have read most of Twain's works, and in my opinion "A Tramp Abroad" is not his best work, but it is definitely one of his most underrated books. It is not as good as his most popular works of fiction (i.e., Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn), nor is it as good as "Life on the Mississippi." But I found it to be the most entertaining of his purely travel-oriented books (the other books in that category being "The Innocents Abroad" and "Following the Equator"). The bottom line is that if you are a fan of Mark Twain's style, then you should find this book to be well worth reading. Finally, if you are going to read "A Tramp Abroad," I highly recommend obtaining a version that contains all 328 of the original illustrations. While I normally would make this recommendation for any of Twain's works, it is especially important for this book since the text makes several references to the illustrations, and since some of the jokes in the text would not make sense without the illustrations. The only current edition I know of that definitely contains *all* of the original illustrations is the Oxford Mark Twain edition (ISBN 0195101375). Also, the Modern Library Classics edition (ISBN 0812970039) apparently has retained some of the original illustrations, since it contains a note stating that "... some illustrations have been omitted" (thus implying that some have not been omitted). I would assume that this edition has retained those illustrations which are essential to the humor, but I can't say for sure since I don't actually have it.

Journeysknown as Grand Tours led tourists to take ship to the Continent. They fanned out across thelandscape with the intent to "know Europe." Their return home resulted in a flurry ofpublished accounts. Twain satirizes both the tourists and their writings with deliciouswit. Ever a man to play with words, his "tramp" refers to both himself and the walking tourof Europe he purports to have made. By the time you've reached the end of the account of the"walking tour" incorporating trains, carriages and barges, you realize that the longest "walk"Twain took occurred in dark hotel room while trying to find his bed. He claims to havecovered 47 miles wandering around the room.Twain was interested in everything, probing into both well-known and obscure topics. Hisjudgments are vividly conveyed in this book, standing in marked contrast to his morereserved approach in Innocents Abroad. A delightful overview of mid-19th Century Europe,Tramp is also interlaced with entertaining asides. Twain was deeply interested in people, andvarious "types" are drawn from his piercing gaze, rendered with acerbic wit. Some of theseare contemporary, while others are dredged from his memories of the California mines andother journeys. He also relished Nature's marvels, recounting his observations. A favouriteessay is "What Stumped the Blue-jays." A nearly universal bird in North America, Twain'sdescription of the jay's curiosity and expressive ability stands unmatched. He observes suchhumble creatures as ants, Alpine chamois, and the American tourist. Few escape hisperception or his scathing wit. This book remains valuable for its timeless rendering ofcharacters and the universality of its view. It can be read repeatedly for education orentertainment.

Barometer Soup By JOHN ANDREW ABEL I have not read Twain since High School twenty five plus years ago but a friend on a newspapers book forums got me to read him again and A Tramp Abroad is the first book I picked. For the current generation this book may drag but for those of us who grew up reading books instead of playing computer games this is Twain at his best. One has to actually read into his writing to appreciate a lot of the irony but when this book is really on like the mountain climbing near the Matterhorn ,Twain makes Seinfeld seem like he's talking about something. A brilliant travel essay and by the way the Penguin Classics edition of this book in paperback is 411 pages long, not 670 pages .

The main character, Jacob, became an inspiration that made me question myself. How would I react in his situation? How Jacob related to his best friend was quite interesting. This book was so good I read it in one sitting. I am looking forward to more novels by this talented author!

I love the twists and turns in this story. The main character Jacob is a surprising survivor of the ZomPoc. The reason for the ZomPoc is an even better surprise. You will continue to turn the pages of this novel just to read what will/can happen. No spoilers in this review, just read it and you will see what all the great reviews are about. Anxiously awaiting the next story of this great adventure.

It had a little more of a real feeling to it. The main character, Jacob, isn't Mr. Perfect. He has attitude and has his own way of dealing with the loses in his life. I really enjoyed it and I can't wait until the next book in the series comes out. I'll be buying it immediately.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Impressive debut By Amazon Customer Engaging set-up for what I'm sure will be a fantastic story arc. The magic system and the setting are both vibrant and original. This first issue introduced many characters that grabbed my interest, and hinted at future political intrigue. I'm hoping we'll see a coming of age story with the protagonist Atum and I look forward to seeing his relationship with his father develop. The full-color artwork is stunning - complex, interesting, and clearly created with expert skill and patience by masters in their craft. Can't wait to read the next one! I suggest reading in browser rather than on smartphone/kindle app, because double page spreads are easier to navigate that way.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Pulp hero for modern times. By Wojtek The Peregrine is a character I was interested for quite some time due to his appearances in other Barry Reese's books.A mysterious gun toting vigilante butting heads with Lazarus Gray, kinda-sorta mentor figure to the newest Gravedigger with hints of the dark past, and supernatural powers... Unfortunately actually getting books starring him (Under his old identity "The Rook") was nearly impossible to me, due to the fact, that shipping rates to Eastern Europe would slaughter my ever-empty wallet, and ebooks were sadly unavailable, leaving me with insatiable hunger. And then a miracle happened, and an omnibus appeared, screaming to me to buy it. And how I could say no? And it was worth every dollar, even when taking some minor flaws into account. But let's start with the most important thing in every Pulp: The Hero himself. Our costumed vigilante is Max Davies, an only son of the press magnate from Boston, Warren Davies. After witnessing his father being murdered by a contract killer hired by the mob, who wanted to silence the articles exposing their crimes in Warren Senior's newspaper at the age of eight, young Max begins to experience splitting headaches, and vivid, chaotic visions.Startled he realizes that those visions actually show him crimes that would be committed in future. After years of helplessly witnessing murders, rapes, kidnappings etc, now adult Max decides to do something about it, to honor the memory of his father, and preserve his own sanity.Young socialite travels around the world for several years, learning various exotic disciplines, and honing his body into a perfect weapon, training martial arts, acrobatics, shooting etc, under various mysterious masters. When Max decides he's ready he returns to America and begins his career as a vigilante named The Peregrine.Soon enough masked avenger becomes the scourge of the underworld, and his trademark calling card with a stylized black bird on it rouses fear from the criminals, and fascination from media, and average citizens. On the other hand, police does not approve of his violent methods, considering The Peregrine to be nothing more than a common murderer, and fruitlessly trying to capture him.Even though police can't capture our vigilante, he becomes careless and soon enough Max comes under suspicion. He manages to fool the detectives, but decides it's time for change of scenery. When we meet him, he's just moved to Atlanta, deciding to leave his violent mission behind, and finally enjoy some peace and quiet.Unfortunately for him (But very fortunately for the readers...) he is soon dragged into another case, when a party he attends is attacked by a group of... zombies. It turns out that the attack of the undead was just a distraction, to get a rare occult book from the host's collection, a book that according to legends is a source of great mythical power...Returning to business Max/Peregrine would cross blades not only with gangsters and occultists, but also vampires, ancient gods, warlocks, Nazis and few people from his turbulent past he would rather forget. At first glance The Peregrine is an obvious homage to the classic characters like The Shadow, The Spider, and even bits and pieces of Batman, but it soon becomes apparent that Mr Reese used those familiar, and kinda boring elements to create something new, and fresh. On one hand Max Davies only wants to honor his father's memory and to control his mysterious "gift", but he notices that this mission had devoured his private life, making The Peregrine more real, than he himself is. Also, while Peregrine has no problem with using lethal force against his enemies, lately mysterious Voice that he hears in his visions began to encourage him to be even more brutal, making him wonder if he would still be able to hold to his morals if it continues.Unexpectedly he finds much needed help in form of Evelyn Gould, a young B-class actress he meets on the fateful party mentioned before. Soon she becomes not only Peregrine's confidante and aide, but also Max's lover and later wife.During his quest Peregrine is also aided by the members of an elite club known as Nova Alliance. It's members are other heroes and adventurers very familiar for Pulp lovers, for example stone-faced master of disguise Richard Benson a.k.a The Avenger, mysterious Domino Lady, or Russian-born superhuman Leonid Kaslov.First omnibus of the series consists of seventeen stories in which Peregrine would face off with an occultist and necromancer trying to bring Satan to the human world using the artifact known as Lucifer's Cage (Lucifer's Cage"), stop a vampire cult of Nyarlathotep worshipers trying to create a new world ruled by undead ("Kingdom of Blood"), try to catch a modern Robin Hood-like figure called The Moon Man ("The Gasping Death"), confront his old teacher; Warlike Manchu who joined forces with an immortal Egyptian priest in trying to control a legendary monster ("Abominations"), battles a team of Nazi superhumans ("Iron Maiden", "Three Skulls", "Catalyst"), and matches his wits against first Pulp supervillain, Doctor Satan ("Bleeding Hells").In other words its a box filled with good old Pulp climate, but with a modern twist, that should satisfy fans of the classic 30's and 40's books, as well as the inexperienced readers of the genre, mainly thanks to Barry Reese's writing style. It's dynamic, detailed and keeps You glued to the book until You end it, but at the same time leaving the reader wanting for more. It masterfully draws upon classic over the top Pulp style, but stops at the right place before it becomes grotesque, and overdone, instead modernizing it without losing it's spirit.IMO some elements are bit too graphic, bordering at disturbing, mainly "The Kingdom of Blood" and "Bloodwerks", but since Mr Reese managed to affect a hardened gore fan like me it only speaks about his skill with the words, I guess...I also felt, that the first volume of Peregrine's adventures kinda lacks the connection to the wider Sovereign City universe. Despite knowing that Max's adventures are the part of the franchise I felt it was disconnected from it. Our hero never visits Sovereign, nor he meets any other heroes like Fortune McCall, Doc Daye, or Lazarus Gray.Only link between the books would be Leopold Grace, a patriarch of the Grace Family prominent in the Sovereign verse, but it's a bit too little for me... Not that it makes "Peregrine Omnibus Vol.01" bad, but to me it was sort of missed opportunity. But that's just nitpicking I guess. However there is one big problem I have with this book. It's editor should be sent to Bloodwerks for a few weeks of fun, then left in tender mercies of Doctor Satan, hurled into Bleeding Hells, and then fed to The Shambling Ones, because Kindle version is one of the most sloppy edited books I had ever seen.Avalanche of typos, disregard of grammar, disjointed layout, or simple mistakes, for example in "The Iron Maiden" Max is called "The Rook" once, even though he was renamed... It really does the book a great disservice, because it's hard to fully enjoy author's skills, when some butcher ruins it every few sentences. And I am not even a native speaker, so for a person who uses English as a first language it would probably be even more painful. But even with editor's incompetence "Peregrine Omnibus Volume One" is a great read for any Pulp fan, or people who like well written, entertaining action adventure books. Coupled with a reasonable price I can really see no reason not to buy it.So, give The Peregrine a chance, he really deserves it.

Barry Reese is a shining light in the world of New Pulp. And this is the perfect way to start following the adventures of one of his best characters.Max Davies is a enjoyable character from the very start. You definitely will want to see how he deals with each new threat. Mr. Reese has created a intriguing world for his characters to inhabit. And this is the perfect gateway. Trust me. You will want more.

The Second Jungle Book is a sequel to The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. First published in 1895, it features 16 stories about Mowgli, all but one set in India, most of which Kipling wrote while living in Vermont. Here are the stories and songs of Kipling's second JUNGLE BOOK: tales of Mowgli and his Seeonee Wolf-Pack and, of course, Akela the wolf; of Bagheera, the panther; Kaa, the Rock Python; Baloo, the Bear; and so many others. They are the tales of Mowgli, the lost boy raised by wolves in the jungles of India, brought up on a diet of Jungle Law, loyalty, and fresh meat from the kill, and they have captivated children and adults alike for generations. There is no better place to learn the life of the wolf pack and the natural order -- the natural justice -- of life in the jungle. And who could ever forget Mowgli's enemy, Shere Khan, the bragadocious Bengal tiger? To say nothing of Rikki-tikki-tavi, the mongoose? This second volume presents the further adventures of Mowgli, including the tale of his biological parents, cast out by their village for their connection to a demon child.

The Second Jungle Book (The Jungle Book) (Volume 2), by Rudyard Kipling

Review ''It would take too long to enumerate even half of the marvelous touches by which the creatures miscalled dumb are made to live for us by Rudyard Kipling . . . The saddest words of this volume are those with which he closes, 'And this is the last of the Mowgli stories!' '' --Vogue

About the Author Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If—" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift". In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined.

The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece. This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

By Sagelady This is undoubtedly a beautiful book, but it should definitely be noted that it only contains the first half of Mowgli's story (i.e., through Shere Khan chapter only) - the text seems unabridged that far, but parts of both Jungle Books are missing - which I for one was misled about from other review(s).

Awesome to me, I am from Venezuela, and Orinoco River is the biggest river in the country and to read this book transported me to our history and roots. The book is full or history, adventure, danger and unexpected surprises and mysteries, awesome mental travel. Just 100% recommended. In another hand, I am somehow disappointed of this edition and the presentation, just because the size 11 inches, so it makes it thin and flimsy to read, a book like this can't fit in a purse without to be bended or damaged and I would never bring it with me to make me company where ever I go as normally I do with my books. I rather prefer to have it on my Kindle, although I love the smell of a new book, the size is too big for a book to carry out. I didn't notice it before to buy it, it is advertised and I didn't notice, thinking that it will be as the standard novels size. I decided to keep it because the book is awesome no matter if it is written on stones, I will have it as an addition to our library for my son to practice Spanish reading.
