By Broly555 There have been many, seemingly countless stories and franchises over the years that have been set in a post-apocalypse Earth; some of the more well-known franchises include The Terminator and Resident Evil, I Am Legend and 28 Weeks Later, and The Walking Dead and Kill Zone. This particular post-apocalyptic thriller novel, "Waves of Reprisal" by Malcolm Little, is set in a post-apocalyptic earth where most of the human race was wiped out in a mass-extinction event; before that happened though, the humans created a series of androids called Synthoids, who were put into cold storage with the intent of being awoken after the apocalypse to rebuild human civilization. The humans who survived the mass-extinction event ended up forming a bunch of different villages and living in primitive tribes.Hanyma, a woman from the village of Kepler, witnessed the destruction of her village and the murder of her family at the hands of some nasty marauders; Hanyma then spends her days hunting down and killing off the members of this team of marauders one by one. One day, Hanyma uncovers the chamber where Synthoid X-5, named Lascaux, lay dormant, and Lascaux explains to Hanyma that her mission is to restore human civilization back to what it was before the mass-extinction event, and she needs Hanyma's help to complete her mission. Hanyma spends the rest of the story torn between her desire to help Lascaux complete her mission to restore human civilization, and her desire to exact vengeance on the group of marauders who slaughtered her village and family.Even though the book is less than 300 pages, I found that it was not a quick read. While the level of detail in the sentences in terms of vocabulary used was very advanced, the flow of the story was very ragged and draggy at times, and it was hard for me to get sucked into the story even though this particular genre of writing is one that I like. Granted, some people might find nothing wrong with the flow of the story and will get sucked into the book, I just wasn't one of those people. On the other hand, I was very impressed with the action sequences and fight scenes, and would be interested to see them enacted on a movie screen if that ever happened for this book.If you're looking for a post-apocalypse action novel that brings a different scenario than your average post-apocalyptic story, and you enjoy following a character who struggles to choose between duty and vengeance, then "Waves of Reprisal" is a book you should take a look at.

A Refreshing Take on Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction By Cassandra Foster *Received in Exchange of an Honest Review*I have to admit, the story kept me captivated. I'm more of a horror genre person myself, but this sci-fi, post apocalyptic tale held my attention throughout. It was well-written and even a bit relatable, so that you find yourself truly caring about the characters and wanting to know what happens next with them. Hanyma starts the story off with a bitter bang, but doesn't leave the reader stuck in a melancholy rut. Even though our main character has to deal with heartbreaking and sudden loss, her indomitable strength and spirit inspires her instead to become an adventurer instead of wallowing away in her sorrows. You, the reader, are taken along as the main character has adventure after adventure, discovering things about her world and her own being. The pace is steady, and though the book doesn't exactly keep the reader on the edge of their seat at all times, it DOES keep the pace rolling along smoothly. The description of the characters and the landscapes are beautifully done, and you truly find yourself visualizing these places and people as you read Hanyma's words. You see the broken landscape, you feel the anguish and determination our heroine feels, and you relish at the idea of venturing forth and discovering this brave, new world. Even though the post-apocalyptic genre has been done again and again (and again), Waves of Reprisal does not feel like just another story of loss and destruction. Instead, the author has made this genre new and exciting again, taking the old plot and twisting and turning it in simple, clever ways that will make the genre feel not only new, but exciting. Waves of Reprisal is most definitely sure to keep you reading, and I feel strongly that there may even be more to come. It may seem moot to mention, but it's something I look for in books always: plot holes and correct grammar. I'm extremely relieved and happy to say that Hanyma's story is free of both frustrating plot holes and grammar mistakes. Add in that simple fact with a well-written story, and you have a book that is sure to become an instant favorite for readers looking for something new and exciting in the science fiction section. Two thumbs up!

Waves of Reprisal makes me think of the legend of Atlantis By Nadia Gerassimenko For a post-apocalyptic science-fiction novel, Waves of Reprisal doesn’t get too deep into the technicalities of science and technology making it an altogether easy and pleasant read for those who love sci-fi but don’t want to be overwhelmed by the terminology. The language used is simple, fast-paced, and, at times, jokey to briefly stray from the gravity and grimness of pivotal moments in the narrative. The way the story begins and continues is intense and gripping keeping the reader on the edge of their seat all throughout worried about the protagonists and anxious to know what happens next. The characters are someone the readers can easily identify themselves with and look up to as they are so lifelike and feeling and determined despite their hardships.I am especially impressed with Hanyma who decided to turn her grief into anger after having lost all her family members during a raid carried out by vicious and ruthless marauders and avenge their death. Perhaps not the soundest impetus to act upon but understandable and justifiable nonetheless for someone who just lost everything she ever loved. All alone, she chose life and resourcefulness over hopelessness and death. With friends—Lascaux, the android, and Ijon, her little soul-brother—she chose perseverance and found her family. With them by her side, she began evolving and thinking more on a grander-scale besides her vendetta: how to protect those close to her and how to restore humanity.Waves of Reprisal makes me think of the legend of Atlantis, a once moral, utopic, and advanced civilization that unfortunately fell from the earth due to people’s moral and spiritual corruption. In Waves of Reprisal, however, the ‘fire and earthquake’ didn’t stem from gods’ wrath but from cyberterrorists annihilating all humans. Somehow this seems more terrifying and threatening perhaps because it’s not far from the truth of our modern reality. As advanced as we may be technologically and industrially, we can’t deny the fact that we have made and keep making a tremendous dent on the earth’s lifespan. And if we don’t start respecting our Mother Nature and its heavenly creatures now, our future may not prove to be very propitious. Definitely some food for thought.
