7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. good method, but author too negative about language teaching companies By Frank C. Revelo The method of the author is similar to the method I use for learning languages and the book was worthwhile simply to boost my confidence in my method. I also learned some things, especially the value of writing in a foreign language as a way of improving skills beyond the intermediate level that I target. For these reasons, I recommend buying this book. However, there are several flaws:1) Denigrates other language courses, EVEN WHEN THESE COURSES DO EXACTLY WHAT HE RECOMMENDS. In particular, the Pimsleur Russian course does all the things he recommends: focus on proper pronuciation first, focus on speaking and listening, focus on mastery of a small vocabulary rather than superficial knowledge of a large vocabulary, learn language chunks and patterns via question and answer sessions rather than learning isolated words, grammar assimilated by exposure to the language rather than learned explicitly, spaced repetition to reinforce learning, etc. The only thing the Pimsleur course doesn't do is the reading and writing, but that comes at a later stage. The Assimil Russian course also follows many of his recommendations, but is more difficult than Pimsleur, which is why I recommend the 90 unit Pimsleur Russian course first, then the 100 unit Assimil Sans Peine Russian course (which can be ordered from the publisher in France with shipping in about a week). People say the Pimsleur course is expensive. Compared to what? Wasting your time with methods that don't work? Assuming you pay $300 for the course and play it 4 times (about what is needed for an average English speaker learning Russian), that amounts to 83 cents per half-hour lesson. Since these lessons are fast-paced, they are at least equal to an hour with a live teacher. Tell me where you can hire Russian language teachers for under a dollar an hour? The Assimil course is equally economical compared to live teachers.2) The author correctly argues against a Latin transcription of Russian words and THEN HE DOES JUST THAT in his book! Kindle books have always supported Cyrillic script, so why didn't he use Cyrillic?3) He moved some information to his website, even when that information could have been put in the book. For example, difficult sounds in Russian. He could have included some example words that are difficult for English speakers (using Cyrillic script, please) rather than making us go to his website. The Kindle doesn't support videos, I might add, so you have to use a separate device to view his website.4) There are some excellent intermediate level Russian readers by Language Practice Publishing, available here at Amazon for Kindle, with MP3 audio on the publishers website. Unlike so many Russian readers, these books show stress for all words (via inconspicuous underlining, which is much nicer than accents above the words or boldfacing the stressed vowel), which is extremely important for beginning students of Russia. The author discusses the value of reading and then listening to Russian intermediate level texts, but fails to mention these books. Another example of the author not wanting to give anyone else credit for good ideas about learning Russian, or to admit that language learning resources today are much better than even 10 years ago, much less 100 years ago.5) Overstates (in that annoying bonus video that you have to view on his website) the importance of the difference between ы and и, other than following м,б and в (мы,бы,вы), which are so common. The Pimsleur course will teach these combinations, or you can just insert a slight "w" sound after the consonant and get something more or less correct (like the slight "w" sound after the "b" in "beauty"). In any case, getting these vowels perfect is not that important. Everyone easily understands Europeans who pronounce English "the" as "zee". Not getting a perfect ы is even less important with Russian than "th" for English. The other Russian sounds he discusses are even less important to get perfect. Pimsleur will get you close enough. What really matters in Russian is stress. Pimsleur will get you correct stress for the words they cover, but you still have to learn stress for all the other words, including stress changes in declensions/conjugations.6) Misleads as to how fast you can learn Russian if you learn the right way (and his way is the right one). Assuming an hour a day, then it would take 90 days for two repetitions of the 90 unit Pimsleur course (new half-hour lesson each night, repeat that lesson the next morning). Then 30 days to skim through the "Penguin New Russian Course" to get an overview of grammar and usage and explain things that Pimsleur left confused. Then 30 days for the first repetition of the Assimil course (3 lessons per day, perhaps reviewing the "Penguin New Russian Course" if those lessons take less than an hour). The next 150 days would repeat the Pimsleur course two more times (starting with lesson 11), repeat the audio only of the Assimil course several times, reread the "Penguin New Russian Course" several times, begin reading and listening to the audio for the Language Publishing Practicing books. This completes the first year or 365 hours of study. You'll have a basic level ability at this point (about 1000 words, which is enough to yell questions about how much something costs and understand the answer if it is very simple. Yelling helps because it makes you look stupid so the other person will respond in simple language, as if talking to an idiot.) The next year (another 365 hours) will involve listening to the audio for the Assimil and LPP books over and over until you understand them perfectly, which will boost your speaking/listening vocabulary to over 5000 words, which is intermediate level Russian, where you can finally feel comfortable in simple conversations using circumlocutions for words you don't know. You should be able to begin reading real Russian literature at this point, with the aid of a dictionary or English translation (I use two kindles side by side). Finally, you should plan on 100 hours of live conversation at this point to put your skills into actually usage. So a total of 830 hours to get to intermediate level skill, which is the lowest level most people will be satisfied with. Two years (830 hours) is certainly better than the ten year marathon, but it isn't overnight. Few people learn languages overnight. If you need or want Russian language skills in the future, then you need to start learning well in advance of when those skills will be needed.[Update: it turns out the author also sells some russian courses (at udemy). Why he doesn't advertise this in the book, I don't know. It now makes more sense that he doesn't mention and disparages the other russian language teaching courses. Anyway, if he really wants to make a contribution, he should fill in the gaps left by Pimsleur, Assimil and Language Practice Publishing. In particular, what is really needed after Pimsleur is mostly more vocabulary. Reading the LPP books and the listening to the associated audio is one way to learn vocabulary, but a better idea would be a continuation of the Pimsleur method, but faster paced and more new words per lesson. I listened to the sample lesson at udemy and it doesn't do this. In fact, it was downright painful listening to that lesson. Also, it doesn't follow the recommendations in his book as well as Pimsleur and Assimil.]

I was struggling mostly with how to learn vocabulary correctly and practice what I have learned. The book had some great points that I never heard of to build vocabulary and grammar. The most valuable information is how this book takes you from the fundamentals of listening, learning the correct sound, them moving on to grammar. It can be intimidating learning a language that has different sounds that your native tongue. After reading this book, I am ready to start practicing online. I really recommend if you buy this E-book, check out the bonus book on learning Russian. The book has several links to websites that have more learning tools. Lastly, skip forward to the end and read the 7 practical steps to take action today. I learned some language tips that I will also apply to learning Korean, Thanks!
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Brilliantly simple and fun to implement! By Christine Gentilhomme Finally something really useful ... Useful because it puts together in one place all the effective strategies for learning Russian. It's like your total immersion blueprint. Brilliantly simple, and fun to implement! The author insists on learning without stress. For example, it is suggested that you learn "chunks of phrases" instead of memorizing declensions, and especially that you *talk, talk, talk* even if you're a beginner: read aloud, sing, talk to yourself, repeat what you hear, etc. There is a special technique for learning new words, quite effective I must say. BTW I recommend a fun app for it, WordPic Russian. I also appreciate the links that provide a good assortment of helpful tools, like links to Russian movies and where to find their subtitles/transcriptions. Thanks Denis!
