Brings ancient history to life By A Customer Everyone, it seems, has heard of Hannibal bringing his army,including the elephants,through the Alps, right to the doorstep of Rome. However, a readable account of Carthage vs. Rome is not easy to find. I've been very happy to find this fascinating historical novel as the best way to teach my two sons, ages 11 and 14, about this time in history. There are some valuable lessons for us all in the book--valor, honor, and how corruption destroys great nations.

25 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Historical Fiction from a Very Different Time By John Knight G.A. Henty was a Victorian gentleman who wrote historical fiction for young people. I learned of him in reading Arthur Schlesinger's autobiography "A Life in the Twentieth Century". Schlesinger credits Henty with awakening an interst in history that was to last a lifetime. I see why. Henty's approach is to imagine a young lad and thrust him into interesting historical periods. The young man possessed of courage, pluck, honesty and compassion finds these attributes necessary to his success in the novel. Much like the Horatio Alger novels of a somewhat later American time, Henty was also conciously teaching the manly virtues. In "The Young Cathaginian" Henty pulls off a slick trick. Our young hero Malchus is a relative of Hannibal the great Cartaginian general who dared to cross the Alps to attack Carthage's great rival, Rome. While Henty admires Hannibal and presents Malchus as virtually flawless, it is clear that Carthage was a corrupt entity and that her deserved defeat was crucial to the growth of Western civilization. This is not a dry history, merely laden with moral overlays. It is also good fun. There is a lion hunt in Africa. A wolf hunt in the Spanish mountains. Escapes through the underground reserviors of Carthage. And countless vivid battles. And a charming little romance. I am glad I stumbled across the Henty output. Sclesinger is right: Henty makes history fun!

The adventures of Malchus, a young Carthaginian noble through the streets of Carthage, rugged mountain ridges, the thick forests of Sardinia, and finally, Rome, keep us on the edge of our seats until the end of the book. It is like an adventure novel more than a history novel, but when we finish the book, we realize that we have learned a lot about the wars between Carthage and Rome without taking the usual pains we have as we use monotonous books.

Entertaining Tale from the Master of Western By ubalu The Mysterious Rider is the story of Columbine, a orphan girl raised by her adoptive father Rancher Bill. Out of feeling obligated to Bill, Columbine agrees to marry his son Jack who is a drunkard, gambler, and coward. But her true love is Wilson Moore, who loves her in return..... But there is one more character with a secret- Columbine's actual father....The master of Western, Zane Grey (1872-1939), brings in romance in his novels, but the insightful way he describes the geography, social customs and practices, the way of life in the West, the American Indian, cowboy, and rancher characters makes the reader so involved. The stories provide not only adventure and entertainment, but the remarkable history of the West.

But what one must realize, is the era in which this book was written, in the 1920's. For lack of a better way to say it, people, especially children, did not get out much back then. They needed to escape, and thinking of the wild west, was a good a way as any.I found the book very enjoyable. The book is not for children, if for no other reason, it it is not written for them, more for young adults. If you want to read a western about shootouts, and that sort of thing, then this is not your book. But for a good, descriptive drama, that grabs you and makes the pages turn, then this is the book for you.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. wstrnnut By George Banks I found this little gem at a yard sale in southern Oklahoma. It is an earlier Zane Grey work (1921 copyright) but it is well worth the reading. This little green hardback gave me a good contrast between what was written as western fiction then, and what is written now. The title is somewhat misleading in that the mysterious rider is not who you would think it would be. I would highly recommend it for the younger generation, boys or girls.

This simple kidnapping is anything but, as there are many intricate trails that lead to suspects, reasoning and possibilities. As the clock is ticking on Portia's life, Phoenix is forced to deal with the fact that her husband's investigation firm is now part of the investigation as well as her withdrawn and moody daughter, Savannah. Will this be the case that finally destroys Phoenix's career?FLESH by Keith Lee Johnson was a solid read. I love the way Keith spins a story, how he connects his characters in multiple stories and the history that comes along with it. Keith has a knack for pushing the envelope. While I appreciate Keith's acknowledgment of his editor, the editing cause a rift in the time line in Portia's past. Consequences By OOSA Online Book Club One of the things I love about Keith's writing is that he always skillfully infuses issues within his plot, social, moral, controversial or otherwise. "Flesh: The Disappearance of Portia Barrington" is no exception.Special Agent Phoenix Perry is back! Despite having just concluded a case involving a family member, Phoenix is immediately thrust into another explosive case and time is of the essence. The teenage daughter of a famous lawyer, with connections as high as the White House, has been kidnapped. Nothing about this kidnapping is normal, the suspect list grows, and people are dying. Phoenix is given carte blanche to discover the identity of the kidnappers and bring the young lady home alive and well. Easier said than done.Keith Lee Johnson knows how to give readers a story, that's for sure. There is a lot to like about "Flesh," but there are a few hang ups. The first hang up is the editing. I understand that finding a quality editor today is like the proverbial needle in a haystack. That said, I can't excuse the poor quality of editing and would strongly urge Johnson seek the assistance of another editor before his next release.Second, the story is complex and layered, which is a good thing. But sometimes too much is too much. I would prefer if Johnson had pulled back some. The story was strong enough that it would still have the same impact."Flesh" is teeming with sex, secrets, betrayals and lies. It kept me turning the pages. Though I am anti-sequel/trilogy/series, Keith Lee Johnson is one of the few authors that has gotten it right. There will be a part two, to which I am looking forward to reading, but with part one, he gave a COMPLETE story, as he does with each of his books. Whether readers continue on to find out what happens next in the life of Phoenix Perry (Johnnie Wise or the Wise brothers), you get a story with a beginning, middle, end, and great character development.Keith, I've said it before and I'll say it again, you're one of my favorites. Crime Doesn't Pay By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers Under the direct order of the President of the United States, FBI agents Phoenix Perry and Kelly McPhearson have been summoned to assist the Child Abduction Rapid Deployment (CARD) team in the search of a missing teenager. Fifteen-year-old Portia Barrington isn't your ordinary teenager; she is the daughter and stepdaughter of two prominent and well respected attorneys. She's playing a dangerous game in an adult world and someone wants her gone. As Perry and McPhearson begin working on the case, they are met with opposition from the CARD team; however, for the moment they've agreed to put their differences aside and find the missing girl.There aren't many authors' books I've read who can have many characters and several plots in a story and have those all intertwine with precision. Keith Lee Johnson's fast-moving, suspenseful book, FLESH: The Disappearance of Portia Barrington is all that and then some. First of all, the powerful characterization sets the tone. The strong presence of each character soars off the pages, luring me into an unscrupulous world of deceit, sex, betrayal and murder. Secondly, as I begin to draw my own conclusions, the plot breeds into subplots adding more spiciness and unadulterated mayhem. Lastly, the final page had me craving for more; therefore, I'll have to wait until the sequel.For an author who has written many books, I was surprised to see numerous editorial errors present in the story. About the Author Wendy C. Giffen is an unrepentant lover of life, an author, certified hypnotist, erstwhile potter and teacher. Although born on the autumn equinox, which suggests balance, her life has been anything but boring. Perhaps that’s why no matter what country she is living in writing is a constant in her life. Having tried to settle, with occasional successes, she now just goes with the flow. Amongst other adventures she trained as a teacher at Cambridge, designed and built a house, owned and ran a hypnotherapy clinic, farmed, potted, home schooled … and had several children.  During all that she wrote. Her children groan at her puns and her husband sighs at her housekeeping - when he notices which is rare.  She loves to kayak or sail around the islands, to drive a horse and buggy, and to bike.  She loves dawns, enjoys witty fridge magnets, reluctantly goes to the gym, and happily takes four dogs for numerous country walks.

By Anthony Books like The Selene Experiment and authors like Wendy will eventually take phrases like "stories with a strong female lead" and absorb them into more deserving the phrases like "stories with a strong main character." Giffen paints a beautiful picture with her words and tells an intriguing and unique story. It's different from anything I've ever read or heard of before, and it's difficult to predict what will happen next--and I was wrong on multiple occasions! I'm very excited to see what Wendy Giffen has in store for us next. This was a real treat to read.

I really loved this book By Phil I really loved this book.Not only is it a great story, the quality of the writing is high, it has lots of twists, there is charm and humour as well as heart pounding adventure, and the sex scenes are VERY classy!She has characters you really care about and ... thank goodness, it's the first in a series. Can't wait for the next one!

By bookaddict The best stories are the hardest to walk away from and this book does it for me.Edgy, heart-wrenching, at times oddly funny. The story was suspenseful, thought provoking, and full of twists.And the packaging certainly lives up to the contents of the book itself.I loved how the author writes: simply, succinct, direct. Yet, so many sentences reveal way more than the words written.The author did an excellent job of flushing the characters out; they were all well rounded and true to life.Full of action and romance, it will keep you turning pages and flicking screens well into the early hours of the morning.

The series continues with another gripping tale of survival, adventure, and love. With enemies on all sides, the meaning of honor and family loyalty is tested as Lar and Aline seek escape from world where Lar is a wanted criminal and Aline is treat few Mwalgi can resist.

Waiting for "Mwalgi Justice" felt like waiting for the conclusion to that cliffhanger season finale on your favorite TV show. *Ominous narrator voice* Previously, in "Mankind's Redemption": After a long (and for Lar, near-fatal) separation, Lar and Aline have finally been reunited, but despite that, all is not well. Mwalgi authorities have found out that Lar killed several of his crewmates from the Desolashon and he will soon be tried (and inevitably convicted) for treason. Lar's brother, Jeraud, is willing to help them escape, but with the government spying on everyone, it will not be easy. Lar and Aline do manage to escape, but Lar's sister Mela, who believes the anti-human propaganda of the Mwalgi government, complicates things and ends up getting dragged along as a witness who can't be allowed to spill what she knows to Lar and Aline's pursuers, but whom Lar is unwilling to kill. Thus begins a long series of narrow escapes from Mwalgi authorities and desolate treks through Lenfay's harsh desert as Lar and Aline attempt to reach somewhere they can obtain a spaceship and get off the planet.I immensely enjoyed the previous two books in this series, but the plot in this one seemed to ramble a bit. It kind of felt like I was playing Monopoly and kept landing on the "Chance" square and having to experience random penalties like this one: "Aline loses her temper; as a result, the group is thrown out of a moving train."I have to say I was really glad that Mela came around and eventually stopped hating Aline for being human. For about the first two-thirds of the book, Mela was convinced that Mwalgi were the superior race and that humans only existed for the use and pleasure of the Mwalgi. But over the course of the novel, as she interacts with Aline and Lar and sees how brave and selfless and resourceful they are, her attitude starts to change. I thought Mela's transformation from her Nazi-Dalek "ENSLAVE THE HUMANS" attitude to an actual reasonable person was very well done.I also enjoyed seeing Lar and Aline's relationship progress. In this book they save each other's lives several times (what else is new?), and at first Lar keeps wanting to sacrifice himself to save Aline, but at one point they have a serious talk about this tendency of his. What results from this discussion is that they come out on more equal footing: they agree to stick together, always, and Aline makes Lar promise to always fight for his life for her sake, because she doesn't want to live without him. It makes me happy that they work through their legitimate relationship issues by talking like real people, rather than being all angsty and refusing to communicate as some authors seem to be fond of making their fictional characters do.Small complaint: there were enough punctuation errors in this book that it got on my nerves a little. Some of the most frequent culprits included comma splices and ending direct questions with periods.A note about mature content: at one point Aline is captured and taken to a breeding facility where the Mwalgi keep captive humans and treat them like animals in a breeding program. There are two scenes where Aline has to fight to avoid being raped, which she does manage to accomplish, but these scenes may be hard to endure for someone who is sensitive to the subject.Overall, I enjoyed this third installment in the "Mankind's Redemption" series. I don't think it was *quite* up to par with the first two, but it was a good book nevertheless. Looking forward to book 4!

It is compelling as it digs deep into the lives of our troops abroad and their families who are usually left at home with little more option than to hope and pray. Yet, how many of us would do more if given the opportunity? How many would actually jump into the fray attempting to rescue a loved-one? This book is a gut check. If you were this soldier’s brother, what would you do? How far would you go? Although the backdrop is the never-ending war on terror, you will find this book hard to put down no matter your political affiliation. I applaud the writer for delving into this politically-prickly world with the finesse and insight necessary to appeal to a broad audience. His ability to make you think will impress. He succeeds in keeping it real, sufficient to make us feel we are part of the story, or certainly could be if given the chance. I commend the author for his research capturing fine detail. Even so, the author avoids the boredom which typically accompanies such detail. His human touch will pull at the heartstrings of anyone with a soul, making this a difficult book to put down. I hope to see a sequel in the near future, but if not, I’ll be reading more of Kristoffer Neff’s work. This is what good writing was meant to be!

By Amy Martinsen I don’t know anyone who hasn’t at some time and on some level felt betrayed. And I don’t know anyone who, at some point hasn’t longed to be forgiven. In Kristoffer Neff’s new military suspense novel, Home of the Brave, he takes these two very universal conditions and allows them to play out—and what we see is a powerful show of bravery and forgiveness that will keep you reading into the wee hours of the morning. The Sutton family is no different than the rest of us, yet when a midnight call from their son Taylor comes, pleading for help for himself and his Army Ranger Team, his brother Michael comes to the rescue—a journey that leads Michael to the violent Northern Territory of Pakistan. Well researched, with believable characters that take you with them to the brutal confines of a military prison, the lonely office of a traitor and the kitchen table, where worried family wait and pray, Home of the Brave is a moving Prodigal Son story…and so much more. I highly recommend it; though carve out some reading time because you won’t want to put it down.

By Shauna Wheelwright This book was SO GOOD on SO MANY LEVELS!You have this team that has been captured and all that they are enduring--you will be amazed at who is responsible for that.You have the love of family and the pulling of emotions knowing that if Michael goes to get his brother he might not come back to his wife and daughterAnd then you have the parents who are now worrying for both of their sons.You have a side story of a girl who has also been captured--wait until you read about that--so intriguing!I LOVED all the twists and turns in the plot--Grab a copy and see how it all plays out :)LOVED this one!Action, betrayal, suspense, and more!Such a GREAT book!
