From the Author THE LAST UMBRA is focused on my admiration for the Japanese warrior class. This book tells of not a pride filled Samurai, but instead, a ninja assassin on a quest in gold-rush era California.

About the Author VIRTUOSO was my first published work. Having read the major European classics, I became passionate about this style of literature; so I decided to create my own story in the romantic flavor. As a Californian of Mexican heritage, I was enthralled with characters like Zorro, my imagination bursting with romantic adventures. I was left with a hunger pang, craving more from pre gold rush California. Later, I discovered Duma's Count of Monte Cristo. It provided me with the profound, emotion-evoking touchstone, of what a person can achieve with words. From there, I knew my calling. I have troves of tales to get out of me and onto paper. I hope to give readers intriguing characters, and well thought out plots.

Lots of twists and turns to keep you engaged. I read this book and fell in love with it! I was entertained from beginning to end with the action and plot of the story. I felt the author really grasps his readers by the development of the characters and really intriguing scenario of using of the author using early California as his backdrop. I also read Chavez's first novel, Virtuoso. Motivated me to read more from this budding author!

About the Author Agustín FERNÁNDEZ-YÉPEZ nació en Valencia, Venezuela, el 2 de junio de 1916. Fue un destacado ictiólogo venezolano que dedicó su vida a la investigación científica y a la conservación. En 1956 fue uno de los integrantes de la Expedición de la Universidad Central de Venezuela a la cima de la meseta del Auyantepuy. Poco tiempo después de esta expedición, se aventuró en el campo literario y escribió su novela TESORO ESSEQUIBO, de la cual reprodujo algunos ejemplares en 1970 y los distribuyó entre familiares y amigos. Fue un excelente dibujante, él mismo ilustraba sus trabajos científicos. Fue el ilustrador del libro “The Pirahna Book” del Dr. George S. MYERS (1972). Recorrió todo el país en expediciones ictiológicas y multidisciplinarias, colectando peces prácticamente en todos los ríos de Venezuela. Describió muchas nuevas especies para la ciencia e identificó nuevas localidades para especies ya conocidas. Fue destacado por distinguidos ictiólogos, como el Dr. G.S. MYERS, quien le dedicó el pez Laemolyta fernandezi; el Dr. Franz H. WEIBETZAHN, quien le dedicó una especie de tiburón (Scylliorrhinus fernandezi) y el Dr. Felipe MARTÍN le dedicó el pez Farlowella agustini. Más recientemente, le fue dedicado el pez Uaru fernandezyepezi por STAWIKOWSKI (1989). Publicó gran cantidad de artículos científicos y divulgativos en diferentes medios impresos e inclusive llego a editar y reproducir un boletín científico denominado EVENCIAS (Establecimiento Venezolano de Ciencias), del cual publicó 29 números; además publicó artículos en cinco números del Boletín del Laboratorio de Investigaciones Pesqueras (Cumaná) y en diez números del Boletín de la Estación de Investigaciones Piscícolas (Maracay). Dejó más de un centenar de publicaciones sobre ictiología y otras ramas del conocimiento. Fue Director de la Oficina Nacional de Pesca del Ministerio de Agricultura y Cría (1966 — 1969). Sembró tortuguillos del Orinoco en el Lago de Valencia, de los cuales ya se conoce su efectiva reproducción en las islas del lago. Así mismo, sembró pavones en varios embalses del país. Sus trabajos fueron reconocidos internacionalmente y durante el Gobierno de Isaías MEDINA ANGARITA (1941 - 1945) fue reconocido como el "Pionero en las Ciencias Ictiológicas de Venezuela". En 1968 le fue otorgado el Premio Nacional de Conservación. Murió el 27 de marzo de 1977, luego de un accidente automovilístico, debido a complicaciones por el avanzado estado de una enfermedad que padecía en los huesos.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great learning tool By mom of twins I am an adult piano player who took 30 years off from playing so I ordered Level 1 of Read Ahead. I also went with the beta version of the app and have using it for 2 weeks and love it. This is a good collection of good music that starts in a 5 finger position and gradually builds in complexity. The book itself is great, but it is really fun when used in conjunction with the app. The memory training exercises are particularly useful and I wish there were even more of them.I’ve already noticed a change in the way I read music and look forward to seeing how much progress I’ve made by the end of Level 1.This is the best method I’ve seen. My teacher is recommending it to all of her Level 1 and 2 students.

I read a lot, and I find that I lose interest in the story after just a few minutes. But that wasn't the case with this story. I found that the story moves along at a nice pace, with twists and turns, that keep you interested in reading more of the story, and wanting to know more about the characters and their plight! After I finished reading the story, I wanted to read more works by this author, and would definitely recommend this author and this story to other readers.

Enjoyable and educational By Al Past Although my last class in literature in Spanish was 40 years ago, I undertook to read El secreto submergido because the subject matter interested me, and I thought it would be a good review for me. It was worth it. I like a good adventure story and I like a mystery, and I particularly like stories connected with the sea. El secreto submergido was both, with the dividend that it offered a glimpse into a part of the world that I was barely aware of: Patagonian Argentina. As a bonus, the unpleasantness of the "Falklands War," as the English speaking world knows it, that is, the dispute between England and Argentina over the possession of Las Islas Malvinas, in the south Atlantic east of Argentina, also figures in, mainly in the epilog.Basically, a high school student in the (real) town of Deseado learns of a (real) British shipwreck 200 years earlier on the rocks of the mouth of the river where his town is located. As a new but enthusiastic SCUBA diver, he decides to investigate, and perhaps locate the wreck. When the retired seaman who provides him with early documentation of the wreck is mysteriously murdered, that sets off a train of events that the young man and his friends pursue to their violent end. It is a rollicking tale.Keeping in mind that my skills in Spanish are a bit rusty, I will say that I found the book well and cleanly written. As a former non-SCUBA diving officer in the American surface navy, I'll add that the details of diving in the cold tidal waters of the mouth of a river, and of the hazards of undersea salvage, struck me as accurate.The English-dominant reader who is intrigued by the book and who has some skill in Spanish and a decent desk dictionary should enjoy El secreto submergido as much as I did.Dr. Al Past is the author of the five Distant Cousin novels, a popular adventure/romance/sci-fi series, the photographic collaborator for Barry Yelton's On Wings of Gentle Power, the author of a book of treble clef duets from Charles Colin, a reviewer for PODBRAM, and a member of the Independent Authors Guild. He lives on a ranch in south Texas.

Lo que parece un juego inocente se va tiñendo de peligro poco a poco, y a medida que se desarrolla la historia saltamos del pasado al presente, conociendo un poco más de la historia pasada del naufragio(hace unos 200 años) y de la moderna(los años 80 del pasado siglo). Creo que el autor ha sabido dosificar la información siguiendo una estructura clásica de novela de misterio, pero sin caer en lo previsible.Por otro lado, la prosa es ágil y las descripciones del lugar y de las gentes que allí viven le dan un punto de exotismo a la novela que está muy bien, desde mi punto de vista.Además, tiene el punto positivo de que está basado en un hecho real. Eso va a gustos, pero creo que le da un interés extra a la historia.En definitiva, esta primera obra de Cristian Perfumo ofrece una lectura entretenida y agradable, en la línea del mejor thriller histórico.
