A rich picture of the diversity of Appalachian dance By marc faris This is a meticulously researched, thoughtfully argued, and beautifully written survey of southern Appalachian dance practices. From a vast body of primary source material -- including interviews and rare archival materials -- Jamison complicates the common perception of the region's expressive practices as products of "poor mountain whites," carefully pointing out the moments and processes by which mountain dance developed from the hybridization of handed-down British traditions and influences from Native American, African/African-American, and Continental dance forms. Ultimately, "Hoedowns, Reels and Frolics" provides a rich picture of the vibrant diversity of Appalachian dance, situated within the social and industrial history of the region, and highlights not only its crooked history but also its potential for impact on current and future generations.I am especially impressed by the way Jamison has balanced his extensive and deep personal experience and passion for the subject with objective, thorough critique -- he's not simply cheerleading for square-dancing or flatfooting -- and by the writing style, which is both unimpeachably erudite AND thoroughly approachable. I'd highly recommend this book to scholars, teachers, and enthusiasts of Appalachian and American history and culture, dance (of all types), music (ditto), and anyone interested in broadening their perspective on the ways and means by which folk traditions are defined and transmitted.

History of Southern Appalachian Dancing by a Knower By Joel Shimberg This is a wonderful book, although of interest mainly to people who are already interested in this subject. It's not likely to ignite an explosion of popularity of a superb form of community recreation that was, I think, killed off by Television, which destroyed community, replacing it with individuals staring at professionally produced garbage, instead of people having great fun with their neighbors.If you are involved in this movement (forgive the pun) or curious about it, Jamison's book is an important part of an ongoing revolution in understanding the history and variety of these dances. I am one of those who believe that understanding the history of things increases one's enjoyment of them. I doubt that Phil had me in mind when he wrote this book, but he might as well have!I would rather that he had included information about Northern Appalachian dances and dance music, but that would be a different book and take another 30 years to research. I'm happy with what he has done.

Jamison has spent his adult life in the area, and has learned dance and banjo from local people who love to tell family stories and show others the art of playing Old Time music and dancing to the hundreds of tunes that originated in the mountains. He explains to the reader the history of these dance forms in a conversational way that keeps the reader interested.

Building a Bigger, Better Business by Book Authorship By Douglas Winslow Cooper Ginny Carter refers to herself as "The Author Maker," and she does in Britain many of the same things I do in America: we help others to write and publish their books. She and I have corresponded occasionally, and she is a pleasure to know. When I became aware of her book, I was inclined to like it; upon reading it, my expectations were upheld.As it is a book about outlining a book, which is the crucial step in building a framework on which the whole edifice depends, I’ll adopt her own outline to tell you about her book…which you should get if you are planning to write a non-fiction book relating to a business you have or wish to have.INTRODUCTIONMs. Carter starts with a bang, as you should, “When we open a business book it’s a bit like stepping into the author’s imaginary home; each room holds a different aspect of their thinking and knowledge.” She’s personal, direct, interesting, and conversational. We are reassured we will not be wasting our time in reading this concise guide: “In this guide, I use the exact same techniques I use with my clients. So I know they work, and they will for you too.”Taking her own advice proffered later in the book, she quickly offers a helpful download in return for our precious email address.Then she gets right to it:STEP 1: What Do You Want Your Book to Achieve?“It sounds like a funny question, doesn’t it? You’ve probably been dreaming of writing a book for quite a while, so asking why you want one seems beside the point.” But this query is exactly on point.Your goals in writing the book will shape everything that follows, so they need careful attention. You can’t get There if you don’t know where There is. Your goals will shape your writing and eventually your book promotion. A “business book,” as she defines it here, is a book that furthers a business you have or hope to have. Most “businesses” make money, but some are charitable or even hobbies that enrich the lives of their “proprietors.”A well-done book will add to your gravitas, your credibility, your client or email list, and your sense of satisfaction. Stephen King once noted [in his memoir, On Writing] that it will not likely help you get dates, but that is another issue.STEP 2: Who Do You Want to Read Your Book?You might answer “everyone.” More modestly, you might want friends and family to be sure to marvel at and mull over your magnum opus, but a “business” book has as its targets prospective customers and those who influence people to become customers. If you are a writer, you are looking for gigs. A coach wants those who would want to be coached. Others, medical and legal professionals, for example, seek to raise their stature (and their incomes) by being authors, authorities…while giving the readers something of value instead of self-aggrandizement, which does not sit well with most who read books.You have to target your audience, often the more specifically the better. Those who know you are talking about them will resonate to your message the way others will not. Targeting often involves an awareness of demographics, as well as a knowledge of needs and interests.STEP 3: What's Your Book About?“Your book needs to have a BIG MESSAGE. And that message should be the answer to a single, burning problem or question – the very one your readers are grappling with right now.”Here’s her formula that can work well for most of these books:“I want to help _________________________ (your target readers) to___________________________ (your big message) so I can _________________ (your goal).”If this review were a book, my example would be: I want to help aspiring non-fiction authors to decide to buy this book so they and their writing coaches will prosper.That was easy.STEP 4: Let's Outline Your Book!Ms. Carter gives several detailed examples of outlines that can work well. Too many of these are a 200-page tome on the author's educational background and personal experience. Not this one! Good structure, easy to follow and good examples. Highly recommend for everyone in education.

One of the greatest benefits of the book is that it is written with precise language that prepares the teacher to communicate with peers and parents as well as plan for meaningful instruction.

Realistic and implementable ideas that any teacher can try By Charlie Finally received my book and already have several different ways I plan on helping students build their critical thinking and creativity. The book also has ideas for collaboration and communication, following the subskill areas from the P21 organization, but the ideas I learned the most from was in the creativity and critical thinking sections (which is why I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars). The quotes at the start of each section of the book are thought provoking and really gets you to think about the importance of the specific 21st century skill. Everyone is talking about technology in education, but not many are showing examples for teachers on how to use technology to teach specific skills or how to connect with the Common State Core Standards. This book does both. I love that amazon has a digital version that is half the price since I am on a teachers' salary!

Bluebird’s meteor shield flared, briefly becoming visible as it encountered scattered debris, possibly from the dead hulk, none of which was large enough to tax the shield or affect Bluebird’s course. Halley slowed their progress as they came up on the Kiskadee. Star watched with interest as she manipulated the gravitational field so it shifted behind Bluebird while still keeping the ship within its boundaries, which he likened to an elongated egg. Bluebird decelerated steadily. “Coming up on target,” Halley said. With an unnerving abruptness, they were so close to Kiskadee that Star felt he could have reached out and touched her. Halley had brought them to a dead stop and shifted main propulsion to neutral, collapsing the gravitational field. The damaged probe ship filled the forward viewscope. One of the Pavlov IV engines and its support arm was missing. The remaining engine was a half-melted shape that only vaguely resembled its former state. The rear of the main body nearest the engine shared that melted appearance, while the port side had been shaved clean off by what must have been a tremendously powerful beam, exposing the interior decks and compartments. Anything and anyone inside must have been vaporized instantly. The hangar compartment, connected to the underbelly, no longer existed. As Kiskadee continued to slowly roll, he saw the bridge section was still intact. “Contact,” Maninder said. “Extreme scanner range. Difficult to separate from the mush. Short but sweet, this novella-length installment carries the story forward nicely. It's Star Trek without the franchise elements, almost a trace of Heinlein-esque flavor for seasoning, and not a smidgen of fantasy or unicorns! Paterson is always a skillful craftsman, and this series of novellas is well worth the price. It's the classic Earth-in-danger scenario, but somehow has a fresh feel to it. Can't wait for the third installment!

It is also a sensitive look at what might happen to Cuba as it necessarily will come out from under the influence of the Castro's. Target Cuba is a riveting and action filled tale that you will be hard pressed to put down, and will be hoping for the sequel as soon as you are finished. The author gives you a very high level viewpoint, reflecting a lot of knowledge of international finance and political ramifications. It is well worth your time to read this thought provoking action thriller.

The print is large, there's enough room to write the solutions, and the paper is the kind you can erase on without destroying it.The puzzles are not real long and not real short, either. I would prefer at least some only a few words long but am not surprised there don't seem to be any. (This would be like the "expert section" in some puzzle magazines.) At least I haven't noticed any that are SO Very long either. I don't like those; they become tedious to me when it takes forever just to go through and change a couple of letters.. The ones in here seem to be a happy medium.The spiral binding is great, too. Overall a very good book.
