Lisa Perdita is a Future Child, one of many who live in an age of endless digital-world connection. Secretly she is also Njorun, an infamous player-persona in the world’s most popular video game: Kognition. Between juggling schoolwork and her personal life, she has spent much of the last ten years in Kognition’s world of Midgard. First Fragment explores the beginning of the Cycle, an opening act pushed forward by death. Second Stage continues the Kognition epic by taking Lisa Perdita beyond the game itself. This edition collects First Fragment and Second Stage together for the first time with new and updated content from the author, two short stories that further establish the characters of Lisa Perdita and Hayden Itagaki.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly good By Thebookishcrypt *Copy provided in exchange for an honest review*This is a bound up version of book one, First Fragment, and the second book, Second Stage. These books take place in the future, 2074 to be exact. The world is completely changed and the 'internet' isn't the craze anymore. These stories focus on the global game, Kognition, which requires access to your mind in order to work...First Fragment:This was the first book I have read by Brandon and boy was I pleasantly surprised! Brandon has a unique style of writing and it fit perfectly with how the plot line was meant to be experienced.I must admit that I experienced a slow start with First Fragment. I felt like I was experiencing information overload but that could've just been me. I had never read a book about a game before so I guess I was processing things different, not the book's fault. I just didn't know what to expect. Another little criticism I have was that some things were explained more than once and it sort of threw me off, I was just waiting for the plot to pick up a bit. But once I surpassed half point of First Fragment, I forgot all about it since it definitely picked up. Lisa, our main character, is thrust into a mystery and we are taken along for the ride as she tries to uncover something about the game she hadn't yet experienced. After reaching the half point I could not put this down. I was completely blown away by the world building and the characters started to grow on me.Second Stage:I loved how nothing was given away as we were dropped into a different reality. I was excited to experience a different POV! Not that I was growing tired of Lisa's POV but I just wanted to witness what somebody else in the game world was going through, and I got my wish! Cue in Sam living in a repetitive world. I was shocked by how easy I was able to follow the plot, so easy that I saw a couple of things coming before they happened. Although I saw the events coming, once they happened I still needed a couple of seconds to digest the shock of it.I absolutely loved the character development we witness from Lisa. Oh my goodness. It wasn't all good and that's what I loved about it. The consequences of a game having access to your mind were completely realistic.I was super busy trying to find out more about the characters that I didn't fully grasp some bits of information/explanations but that's all on me. (I really need to start reading more books about games so I'm not confused half of the time.) No matter, my experience was still more than enjoyable. I swear I need to read Third Trial asap!! This ends in a darn cliffhanger, of course, and I couldn't contain my excitement of knowing more things were coming!P.S.: I extremely enjoyed the two short stories at the end of this book. The topics were mentioned during both books but never fully explained, until these. I didn't know they were so crucial to the understanding of the plot but they were. They both filled in some blank spaces and I must thank Brandon for that.If you're a gamer, I definitely suggest you read this book! And even if you're not a gamer but would love to reach out of your norm, like me, then read it too!

By SandratheBookWorm Original Review Posted @ http://sandrathebookworm.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-kognition-cycle-first-fragment.htmlRating: 3.5/5 starsThe Author was kind enough to send me a copy of his book in exchange for an honest review.I have never read a book like this, it was so different from all my previous reads the main reason being because it's about a game. I really enjoyed this book, but I did have some minor problems with it. Kogniton is a game people play all over the world, as more people play it the game expands and more realms are built, in the first fragment of the book we meet Lisa a girl who has been playing Kognition since she was very young. Lisa is one of the best players around. One day after she logs in she sees a girl is dying in the middle of the field and decides to heal her and give her a weapon since she believes she is lower rank player, but there something strange about the girl that Lisa can quite put her finger on; Lisa soon becomes obsessed with finding out who or what she is. For The First fragment of the book I felt a little overwhelmed with the Game talk and some of it became a little repetitive at points. The Second Stage is where Brandon really caught my attention and I was glad I kept reading! Lisa has seen and heard some things she shouldn't have and people are after her; she has run away from home and keeps on switching from Lisa to her player persona Njorun. In the Second Stage we also meet Sam a young boy that has been living in a farm with his mom since he was a little boy and has never seen anything outside it. I really enjoyed the character development that Njorun/Lisa goes through, I also really liked that she was very independent character and didn't need any help to kick butt. I really liked the action in this book and all the new characters we are introduced to, especially Sam he really won me over. As I was reading I also noticed that Brandon's writing is very poetic some scenes and world descriptions are written very beautifully. Towards the end I was hit with some very unexpected twists that have me craving the third book. Another thing I noticed is that this book has zero romance which is very rare in a YA book and also very refreshing.Overall I really enjoyed this book the beginning is a little slow, but I promise it gets better as the book progresses. I recommend this book to anyone that is looking for something different and likes a strong female lead character that kicks ass.-SandraTheBookWorm

Review "This book is a film lover's dream. It chronicles the entire history of cinema, and this updated edition includes new movies…"—Book Page"It's a perfect distraction for the film buff trying to get you to sit through that 14-hour Terrence Malick movie."—Connie Ogle, The Miami Herald "I'm very pleased that there appears to be no discrimination over genre or the country of origin. The collection of films here is appropriate for any true connoisseur of the medium. For the most part, the writers are knowledgeable about their subject and provide just enough about each film to whet our appetite, which is the true purpose of the volume, not that I need much pushing to watch more movies. There are rare gems here that will have me searching the rare video lists out there to check out. The book is an excellent value. It's heavy and substantial, clocking in at nearly 1000 pages. For each movie you'll get vital cast and crew information as well as Oscar nominations. English translations are provided for foreign films. Nearly ever film sports at least one photograph. I really do think this is one of those books that belong on every serious videophile's reference shelf, and I know that it will enhance mine for years to come. Consider it required reading from this course on filmography. There are genre-specific titles that I hope to be able to share with you in the future. The new edition editor is Ian Haydn Smith, and he's literally throwing down the gauntlet for you to choose your own movies to die for."—Upcoming Discs, upcomingdiscs.com"1001 MOVIES YOU MUST SEE BEFORE YOU DIE celebrates the most creative and influential voices in film. It is a trusted resource for movie lovers and one that we proudly reference."—Sundance Channel

By Elman One might ask, why bother buying this book, there is much information available for free on IMDb. This is exactly what I was thinking...until I stumbled upon 2008's edition of '1001 movies'. I instantly decided to buy a latest edition, I was lucky, 2015 version was released only a couple of weeks ago. Every page in this book is about a masterpiece in the history of film, I was surprised to find here so many of my favorite movies, not only classic and modern American ones, but also European and Asian. You will not get to read here about movies like 'The Equalizer' or 'Fury', while they are good, they did not exactly make a difference in the history of their genres. But you most certainly, will get 'Reservoir Dogs', 'Star Wars V', 'Casablanca' as well as Polish 'Decalogue', Russian 'Levaithan' and Korean 'Oldboy'. Many movies are accompanied by photos, details about the film and a professional review. It's just so nice to have this book, the quality of paper is also really good.As you may expect, not all your favorite movies will be listed here. I was surprised that 'Kill Bill' was not there, I saw it in 2008 edition, but apparently, they removed it in 2015 in favor of 'Django Unchained'. One of the most beautiful movies that I saw - Kim Ki-duk's 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring' was not there either. 'Dawn of the planet of the Apes' is another one...I am sure there are others, too, but it shouldn't really influence your decision to buy. It's a must-have book for every movie fan, over 100 years of amazing movies is just one click away.

I missed the 2005/2008/2011/2013 updates, so I thought I would try the 2015 to see what was new. The first improvement I noticed were the colored year tabs like a dictionary. I also liked the little sidebar blurbs on the films that consist of snippets by reviewers, actors' comments & trivia. The movie posters exclusive to this edition are a welcome addition. They substitute for some of the smaller images, but they aren't always better. I realize something has to be sacrificed for new material, but I miss some of those full page shots in my original edition. But, in the end, this is an exquisite book that I could not be without. I may even purchase some of the in-between editions to discover how they differ. FYI, it actually contains over 1150 films as opposed to 1001. The outer cover is a little cheap & wears easily starting with the corners. But that's a minor complaint. Mr. Schneider has done an admirable job. There is nothing else out there like it. It's not just a mindless, coffee table book. It is a well written work that truly is one-of-a-kind.

While it didn't have some of my personal favorites, it did have a lot movies I'd never heard of. Because of the detail on each movie as well as trivia, I thought it was an interesting book to pick up and just read occasionally. It is a physically heavy book, so don't be surprised when you get it! In all very well done and I'd recommend it for any movie fan.

Tes has taken the first step towards figuring out who she really is. In doing so, the free runner from the 21st century has discovered that she’s Jack the Ripper’s sister, that she’s not actually from the 21st century, and that—oh yeah—time travel is actually a thing. She isn’t all that certain about what Jack has planned for her, or what her DNA has to do with helping repair time itself, but she knew when she joined the crew of The Valentine her chances for getting those answers became less impossible. Now, if she could only remember where the bathroom was on a ship the size of a small country… Finding that bathroom, however, is the least of the free runner’s problems. When a temporal kraken attacks both The Valentine and The Dreadnaught, Tes becomes stranded in the 1300s of Ye Old England. Making an unlikely alliance with the enemy—a medieval archer called Rune—is just the icing on the cake. The cherry on top is working with him to keep their next target, Rowan Ulrich, out of trouble long enough for their respective crews to locate them. But Rune has his own secrets, ones that begin to make Tes think there’s more to the archer than being a so-called villain. What are they, and what does the Rowan have to do with any of it?

It pointed out that after sending the superspy into space in “Moonraker”, the producer had a real challenge in trying to top THAT. Instead, he wisely decided to change tack, and focus more on the characters and earth settings. While the first book in this series, “The Steam Runner”, had little in common with Ian Fleming's famed character (or more to the point, filmmaker Albert “Cubby” Broccoli’s interpretation of him) – involving a steam-punk society and time travelers and some sort of as-yet mysterious quest. However, the pacing of that first book had the familiar (in a good sense) pacing of one of Broccoli's pre-reboot James Bond movies. And the second book followed the direction I mentioned in the first paragraph – it takes the time to delve deeper into some of the characters, rather than simply introducing them during an action sequence. And I loved it.Two characters – Tes (short for Tesla) from the “good-guy” ship “Nautilus”, and Rune from the “bad guys” craft “Dreadnaught”, find themselves stranded in Medieval England. It turns out that Rune has several secrets – for starters, Rune isn't exactly a stereotypical evil-doer but has his own reasons for serving on the ship, AND Rune is from the era and the locale where they have been sent – almost. And the ending … once everyone is back where they belong, the author leaves us not so much with a cliffhanger but rather a prologue to the rest of the series. The Steam Runner is one of my favorite series – even after only two books – and I look forward to the next installment.RATING: 4 1/2 stars, rounded up to 5 stars where 1/2 stars are not permitted.DISCLOSURE: This book was provided free of charge in the hopes of an honest and prompt review.

It captured my attention and I couldn't put it down for hours straight. It was emotional, and had ups, downs and twists you'd never see coming. I truly enjoyed reading this book, and would like for the author to write a second part to this. It's a great read for teenagers out there, and I would recommend for everyone to buy it. I bought 8 books to gift to families and kids out there. Great work.

The last time I cried over a book was years ago and this one seriously pulled some heartstrings. This book deserves five stars so much, and I'm obsessed with it even if I haven't finished. (I'm on chapter 18).I could say more, but I'm pretty much speechless, here. If you haven't read it, I encourage you to.

I'd recommend this book to young adult readers, although it's fit for everyone over the age of twelve. Her bond with the Prince of Astodia is one I hope will never break, no matter where they are. It was emotional, hilarious, and thought-provoking.The main character, Adalia, teaches that no matter what conditions you were raised under and how pressured you can be to make a choice, your heart always knows what the right decision is. The moral is that anyone can create their own future. In the end, you will always find your way.Credit goes to the sixteen year old author who managed to put this page-turner together.I'm looking forward to hearing more from Adalia in book two. I hope her adventures never come to an end.

I loved the universe that was created. A lot of thought went into this. The writing was good to. I'm always iffy about self published stuff, but it was well done. It was very fast paced which I like. The down time was short and gave you information about the universe. I liked the characters and their back story. When it comes to the romance it was cute. I do feel near the end it was rushed, but I still liked it. It had that fairy tale feel to it. Like the prince rescuing the princess type feel.

Great fantasy/romance story By marchelle i normally do not go for fantasy like this book but it was well worth my first try. outside of the fantasy part the romance that was built was beautifully done. i loved Light and the Knight's relationship from the beginning. there were so many twists and turns that i enjoyed this book the whole way. these two along with others went through much to be together. the end of the journey from Shadow as definitely unexpected. great read.
