To the casual visitor, Wheaton and Rocky Comfort, Missouri, are just two tiny towns on the edge of the Ozark hill country. In Listening to the Jar Flies, author Jimmy R. Lewis narrates stories about the extraordinary and colorful characters who lived there between 1907 and 1960. There’s an aging former cowboy who bested Old West legend Tom Horn in a knife fight and a faith-healing preacher who came to town seeking converts on busy Saturdays with a four-foot bull snake slithering around his shoulders. Lewis tells about the one-eyed newspaper editor who sparked a community to build a first-class high-school gymnasium for $20,000 with donated labor and lumber salvaged from old army barracks. Another chapter shares the story of an air force fighter pilot from Wheaton who narrowly averted firing a missile that could have started World War III. Listening to the Jar Flies details a conflict that actually was waged in Wheaton in 1953—the Great Banana War—and it narrates how Wheaton’s citizens reacted to a vicious and bloody strike against the Missouri & North Arkansas Railroad shortly after World War I. From disastrous fires to a world-class loafer, Lewis presents a series of colorful vignettes that offer insight into a piece of rural America’s history.

Vivid Review of Small Town Life 75 Years Ago By Donna Capps Since I grew up in the area, it was wonderful to be reminded of familiar memories, as well as learning more about people and happenings that I had heard about, but did not know the details. Dr. Ellison, teacher Thelma Smith, preacher Little Charlie Keeliing, "Effern" Decker, The Tornado!Besides presenting the facts, from personal experience, as well as extended research in the Wheaton Journal and other printed material, the author put them together in stories with humor and pathos. It gave me a new appreciation for the place where I grew up and all the many characters who inhabited it.

*Includes pictures *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “Aging is an inevitable process. I surely wouldn't want to grow younger. The older you become, the more you know; your bank account of knowledge is much richer.” – Holden The fantasy world of Hollywood of the 1940s that continued to fascinate the American public through the following two decades typified the golden age of old-style American machismo. The movies were filled with rugged, intimidating men who had a rough style adored by female screen characters and moviegoers alike. Unlike their European counterparts, the evolving subgenres of the American leading man began to include individuals with iconic quirks in general appearance, voice and humor, as an alternative to the rugged, understated, and sometimes reluctant “man of the people.” Actors such as Cary Grant, Tony Curtis, and Dean Martin ably represented the new, more suave male, while John Wayne covered the spectrum of the rural hero, and Anthony Quinn lent a broad ethnicity to his characters. However, it was William Holden who became America’s first choice among films requiring a shy, cynical, and sexually potent “broken hero” on the screen, less thoughtful, perhaps, than Gregory Peck, and less rigid than Gary Cooper. Once finding his niche in the early ’40s, the actor with no discernible quirks to rely on for identification, unlike his counterparts, sauntered onto the screen with an “easy masculine manner.” Perhaps Holden’s many unwilling heroes filmed over a 40 year career were aided by the reality that Holden was much like them, an actor who was uncomfortable on the set and terrified of screen intimacy, on certain occasions requiring lengthy alcoholic binges to get through some of the steamier love scenes and sexualized dances with co-stars such as Kim Novak, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly. In a career during which Holden sought out roles that could only be played by more seasoned, facially-lined men, his destructive off-screen behavior eventually granted his wish, and he prematurely entered a second career as a prematurely-aged character actor after a decade or more as America’s adored heartthrob in a long line of less than substantial film offerings. In Holden’s era, the studio was king, and owned the artists outright, leaving precious little wiggle room for creative development. As corporations they could hoard artists, or share contracts with other studios, as in Holden’s case. They could refuse to loan any artist for individual projects, and could force whatever type of role they wished upon an actor, who could do little to break out or expand. If he or she refused too many roles, it could result in punishment by being lowered to the bottom of the list for future consideration. As with other artists of the time, Holden, therefore, was cast in a myriad of inconsequential parts with mediocre, forgettable screenplays. He referred, not so affectionately, to many of his early appearances as “Smiling Jim” roles, but was able to make his mark in works such as The Bridge on the River Kwai, Picnic, Sunset Boulevard, and Stalag 17, which would eventually find its way onto television as the farcical Hogan’s Heroes. Holden’s interests grew to become international in scope, and he entertained enduring fascinations with sites such as Hong Kong and much of the African continent, where he came to establish a wildlife game preserve. A collector of fine Asian art, he held a lifelong love for that part of the world. Colleagues and audiences made note of his decreased passion for acting as time went on, and only a subject of particular social importance, or an enticing piece of geography, could pique his interest in his later days. And yet, he is remembered by fellow actors as possessing a sense of personal good will and amiability, despite his shyness. Holden’s passing was a shock to his film audience, and in no way fit his screen persona.

I've learned quite a bit about him over the years. This short biography was full of factual errors, and in general, seemed very disrespectful to Mr. Holden and the time period in general. Very little credit is given to him for his many amazing accomplishments as an actor, and while a brief mention of each movie he appeared in is included, this seems to focus on the so called negative aspects while calling everything dated. To me, that comes from a person with very little knowledge or respect for classic movies. The only good thing about this is that it is short. Even the pictures included are odd choices, such as in one sentence talking about a certain movie with a certain co-star, then showing a picture of that co-star from a completely unrelated movie. Very disappointed in this. Only read this if you have kindle unlimited.

Each chapter is then broken down further into a series of excellent tips, e.g. editing interrupts the flow of writing, so try to resist it until the end. My favorite chapter was the one on how to stay motivated. Oberman offers various solutions to keep that writing engine going - my favorite being the reward system, which is just treating yourself for reaching the goals you've set. The best part is that if you find one of the tips isn't working as effectively as it once was, there are still more you can try out.If you're still struggling to find that something that will move you, Oberman provides a list of some writing challenges and websites you can visit. We are all aware of the NaNoWriMo which takes place in November, but there are other lesser known challenges, like NaPlWriMo (National Playwriting month) which also takes place during November and NaPoWriMo (National Poem Writing month) which takes place in April.

Handy Tips on Beginning to write Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Poetry By Ellen Kammerer If you are new to writing, or just looking to get some quick tips and tricks to writing everything from novels, to poems, to short stories, then you should take a gander at this book. Writing can seem intimidating, especially if you feel you need to develop your writing skills or you have a hard time coming up with writing ideas. I am a writer and have finished a few novel drafts in my time. Everything that Oberman suggests in this book is exactly what you need to help get you started, developing characters, creating plots, and getting to through your daily word count. Not only does Oberman offer suggestions as to how to keep on track, he also offers a great amount of ways to find inspiration. From dreams to news article, there are plenty of places to find a great story. The part of this book that is certainly makes it worth the money is the chapter “Projects to Take On.” This is a list of great places to challenge yourself to get words written down on the page.

By Tinaya Sallie I am new to this author, Felix Oberman, but I am not new to the concept of creative writing and this author wrote a very good guide, in my opinion. This is a short and to the point creative writing guide that is very easy to read and interesting to follow. It's not long and/or drawn out and it'll hold your interest from beginning to end. All of the information and advice in this book is both valid and useful and I believe anyone who is interested in either learning creative writing or wanting to expand their creative writing knowledge would certainly find this book worthwhile. I recommend this read for every creative writer from beginners to experts.

By Mamahen66 I was given the 2015 version of this calendar last year for Christmas and LOVED it!! I bought the 2016 calendar because I wanted to make sure I had it ready for January 1st. The daily quotes are sarcastic, humorous, not always politically correct and are sure to put a smile on a 40+ women's face!! In fact, I have a couple of friends that are going through menopause and I think I am going to buy a couple more Daily Bitch calendars for them too! :-D

I had to customize a post-it note to put over the word "bitch" every day since it's not really work appropriate, but the daily comments are usually pretty funny. I do wish that it was called something different, only because I wanted a funny page-a-day for work and the title isn't really work-friendly. But the other calendars I found weren't really my kind of humor! Most of these pages are fun to read. There are some that are boring or stupid, in my opinion. It just depends on what your sense of humor is like! Overall I enjoy this calendar and would probably buy it again.

For the Temple: A Tale of the Fall of Jerusalem, by Mr George Alfred Henty

From the Publisher A stirring tale of the last days of the Temple at Jerusalem. Robber bands and political infighting sets the stage for the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. In the face of overwhelming odds, John of Gamala does his best to save God's Temple, harrasing Roman work parties, burning Roman camps, defending Jerusalem during the Roman siege, and even fighting Titus himself in hand-to-hand combat--forging a relationship with the Roman leader that lasts until after the war. In spite of fighting a losing battle, John keeps his integrity and honor intact.

From the Back Cover Young people across America are rediscovering G. A. Henty, the 19th century literary genius whose historical adventures inspire boys to honesty, courage, diligence, and duty. Writing from a Christian perspective, Henty weaves the adventures of a fictional boy hero together with real-life events. His stories are as accurate as they are exciting, so children get important lessons in history which they remember long afterward. Just as important, these lessons come without the immoral overtones of modern novels.

For the Temple descends into the turmoil that ended with the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus in A.D. 70. John, a 15-yearold Glilean, fears that the Jewish revolt against Rome could bring disaster upon his people--and the Temple. Then, his bravery in a storm attracts the attention of the governor, Josephus. Suddenly, he finds himself in the forefront of events. After escaping from the massacre at Jotapata in A.D. 67, John, with his loyal band, becomes a hero to the Jews and a scourge to the Romans. He disrupts Roman work parties. . .showers arrows and boulders onto troops. . .burns Roman camps. . .rescues his betrothed from slavery. . .even fights Titus himself in hand-to-hand combat:

"John's knife fell from his hand. He tried to rise to his feet; then everything seemed to swim round, and he fell insensible. Titus rose to his feet; he was shaken by the fall, and he, too, had lost much blood. Panting from his exertions, he looked down upon his prostrate foe, and the generosity which was the prevailing feature of his character, except when excited in battle, mastered him. 'By Hercules,' he exclaimed, 'that is a gallant youth, though he is a Jew, and he has well-nigh made an end of me! What will Vespasian say when he hears that I have been beaten in a fair fight and owe my life to the mercy of a Jew!'"

In the final defense of the Temple, John is delivered yet again, only to be enslaved. But his slavery leads him to Caesar's court and finally home, not just to Glilee, but to that Galilean preacher his father had recognized as a prophet forty years before.

Tight-lipped the two solitary foes circle each other, thrusting, slashing, striking, and warding off the blows of the other. Suddenly, the younger man, dressed in Jewish garb, and armed only with a sword and buckler, dashes under the heavily armed Roman's sword. The sudden impact throws the Roman to the ground, though the Hebrew is stuck hard on the head. Brushing aside the blood that pours down his forehead the Jew siezes his knife and and raises it, to end the life of his prostrate fiend. "Strike, Jew! I am Titus!" the Roman boldly states. Who are these two combatants? What do they have against each other? The Hebrew is 19-year-old John of Gamala, a hero to the Jews and a scourge to the Roman army. Titus is General of the Roman army invading Israel, whose people are fresh from throwing off the Roman government. How will this deadly duel play out? Never mind. This excellently written novel is much better than Super Glue ever dreamed of being. "For The Temple", if anything can, will glue you to your seat so that it will take a bulldozer to dislodge you. {note: we don't recomend the use of this book for repairing broken toys, however.} "For The Temple" chronicles the life of a Galilean teenager at the time of the fall of Jerusalem. From the storm on Lake Tibereas, to the siege at Jotatpata, you will grow to love and admire John, son of Simon, as he grows, wars, and has adventures of all kinds defending Josephus, Gamala, his betrothed wife, and finally the Temple in Jerusalem. Will he survive that monumentous occasion? More importantly, who will win the afforementioned duel? READ THE BOOK AND FIND OUT! (no, Amazon did not hire me to sell their book, I did this originally as a school assignment) I highly recommend this historically accurate book to people who like history, adventure, or just plain good books. Also to people who HATE history, as a good way to gag it down.

Miller Combining accounts from Josphus and the Old and New Testament, Henty weaves a tale of bravery set in the time between Christ's crucifiction and the destruction of the Temple. As with all Henty books, his hero is brave, honest, kind, and resourceful, modelling the best aspects of behavior. Highly recommended.

Before I read this I knew almost nothing about the destruction of the Temple. Now I understand it clearly. The politics and different factions of the time period are described very well. You come away with a very good understanding of how all the events unfolded. Plus, the dialogue is not quite as lengthy as some of the other Henty novels. Worth reading.

Lisa Perdita is a Future Child, one of many who live in an age of endless digital-world connection. Secretly she is also Njorun, an infamous player-persona in the world’s most popular video game: Kognition. Between juggling schoolwork and her personal life, she has spent much of the last ten years in Kognition’s world of Midgard. First Fragment explores the beginning of the Cycle, an opening act pushed forward by death. Second Stage continues the Kognition epic by taking Lisa Perdita beyond the game itself. This edition collects First Fragment and Second Stage together for the first time with new and updated content from the author, two short stories that further establish the characters of Lisa Perdita and Hayden Itagaki.

Surprisingly good By Thebookishcrypt *Copy provided in exchange for an honest review*This is a bound up version of book one, First Fragment, and the second book, Second Stage. These books take place in the future, 2074 to be exact. The world is completely changed and the 'internet' isn't the craze anymore. These stories focus on the global game, Kognition, which requires access to your mind in order to work...First Fragment:This was the first book I have read by Brandon and boy was I pleasantly surprised! Brandon has a unique style of writing and it fit perfectly with how the plot line was meant to be experienced.I must admit that I experienced a slow start with First Fragment. I felt like I was experiencing information overload but that could've just been me. I had never read a book about a game before so I guess I was processing things different, not the book's fault. I just didn't know what to expect. Another little criticism I have was that some things were explained more than once and it sort of threw me off, I was just waiting for the plot to pick up a bit. But once I surpassed half point of First Fragment, I forgot all about it since it definitely picked up. Lisa, our main character, is thrust into a mystery and we are taken along for the ride as she tries to uncover something about the game she hadn't yet experienced. After reaching the half point I could not put this down. I was completely blown away by the world building and the characters started to grow on me.Second Stage:I loved how nothing was given away as we were dropped into a different reality. I was excited to experience a different POV! Not that I was growing tired of Lisa's POV but I just wanted to witness what somebody else in the game world was going through, and I got my wish! Cue in Sam living in a repetitive world. I was shocked by how easy I was able to follow the plot, so easy that I saw a couple of things coming before they happened. Although I saw the events coming, once they happened I still needed a couple of seconds to digest the shock of it.I absolutely loved the character development we witness from Lisa. Oh my goodness. It wasn't all good and that's what I loved about it. The consequences of a game having access to your mind were completely realistic.I was super busy trying to find out more about the characters that I didn't fully grasp some bits of information/explanations but that's all on me. (I really need to start reading more books about games so I'm not confused half of the time.) No matter, my experience was still more than enjoyable. I swear I need to read Third Trial asap!! This ends in a darn cliffhanger, of course, and I couldn't contain my excitement of knowing more things were coming!P.S.: I extremely enjoyed the two short stories at the end of this book. The topics were mentioned during both books but never fully explained, until these. I didn't know they were so crucial to the understanding of the plot but they were. They both filled in some blank spaces and I must thank Brandon for that.If you're a gamer, I definitely suggest you read this book! And even if you're not a gamer but would love to reach out of your norm, like me, then read it too!

By SandratheBookWorm Original Review Posted @ http://sandrathebookworm.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-kognition-cycle-first-fragment.htmlRating: 3.5/5 starsThe Author was kind enough to send me a copy of his book in exchange for an honest review.I have never read a book like this, it was so different from all my previous reads the main reason being because it's about a game. I really enjoyed this book, but I did have some minor problems with it. Kogniton is a game people play all over the world, as more people play it the game expands and more realms are built, in the first fragment of the book we meet Lisa a girl who has been playing Kognition since she was very young. Lisa is one of the best players around. One day after she logs in she sees a girl is dying in the middle of the field and decides to heal her and give her a weapon since she believes she is lower rank player, but there something strange about the girl that Lisa can quite put her finger on; Lisa soon becomes obsessed with finding out who or what she is. For The First fragment of the book I felt a little overwhelmed with the Game talk and some of it became a little repetitive at points. The Second Stage is where Brandon really caught my attention and I was glad I kept reading! Lisa has seen and heard some things she shouldn't have and people are after her; she has run away from home and keeps on switching from Lisa to her player persona Njorun. In the Second Stage we also meet Sam a young boy that has been living in a farm with his mom since he was a little boy and has never seen anything outside it. I really enjoyed the character development that Njorun/Lisa goes through, I also really liked that she was very independent character and didn't need any help to kick butt. I really liked the action in this book and all the new characters we are introduced to, especially Sam he really won me over. As I was reading I also noticed that Brandon's writing is very poetic some scenes and world descriptions are written very beautifully. Towards the end I was hit with some very unexpected twists that have me craving the third book. Another thing I noticed is that this book has zero romance which is very rare in a YA book and also very refreshing.Overall I really enjoyed this book the beginning is a little slow, but I promise it gets better as the book progresses. I recommend this book to anyone that is looking for something different and likes a strong female lead character that kicks ass.-SandraTheBookWorm
