"The closer the new media future gets, the further victory appears." --Michael WolffThis is a book about what happens when the smartest people in the room decide something is inevitable, and yet it doesn’t come to pass. What happens when omens have been misread, tea leaves misinterpreted, gurus embarrassed?Twenty years after the Netscape IPO, ten years after the birth of YouTube, and five years after the first iPad, the Internet has still not destroyed the giants of old media. CBS, News Corp, Disney, Comcast, Time Warner, and their peers are still alive, kicking, and making big bucks. The New York Times still earns far more from print ads than from digital ads. Super Bowl commercials are more valuable than ever. Banner ad space on Yahoo can be bought for a relative pittance.Sure, the darlings of new media—Buzzfeed, HuffPo, Politico, and many more—keep attracting ever more traffic, in some cases truly phenomenal traffic. But as Michael Wolff shows in this fascinating and sure-to-be-controversial book, their buzz and venture financing rounds are based on assumptions that were wrong from the start, and become more wrong with each passing year. The consequences of this folly are far reaching for anyone who cares about good journalism, enjoys bingeing on Netflix, works with advertising, or plans to have a role in the future of the Internet.Wolff set out to write an honest guide to the changing media landscape, based on a clear-eyed evaluation of who really makes money and how. His conclusion: the Web, social media, and various mobile platforms are not the new television. Television is the new television. We all know that Google and Facebook are thriving by selling online ads—but they’re aggregators, not content creators. As major brands conclude that banner ads next to text basically don’t work, the value of digital traffic to content-driven sites has plummeted, while the value of a television audience continues to rise. Even if millions now watch television on their phones via their Netflix, Hulu, and HBO GO apps, that doesn’t change the balance of power. Television by any other name is the game everybody is trying to win—including outlets like The Wall Street Journal that never used to play the game at all.Drawing on his unparalleled sources in corner offices from Rockefeller Center to Beverly Hills, Wolff tells us what’s really going on, which emperors have no clothes, and which supposed geniuses are due for a major fall. Whether he riles you or makes you cheer, his book will change how you think about media, technology, and the way we live now.

This is fine, actually, the explanations of changes in advertising (mostly print) over the last fifteen or so years of the emergence of digitally distributed media are very strong and helpful. The title is catchy and Wolff’s assertion that contrary to many predictions “television” did not die and is actually thriving as a result of the superior distribution technology of the Internet is quite true. This book doesn’t touch on the economics of making television, of studios, of channels—it is in this sense that I suggest it is far more about advertising than television. It is at its strongest when it explains what has happened to print media due to digital distribution and explores the evolving strategies of legacy and digitally-native print outlets as they’ve tried to find ad-supported models that work. He uses this to both forecast coming problems for digitally distributed video (television) as well as note how certain types of video will likely be immune from these problems (in short, ad-supported models don’t work in a world of potentially unlimited advertising inventory). This needed to be a book. Unlike the constant flow of pieces that cover similar terrain, Wolff takes advantage of the longer form to tell a more comprehensive story of change over time. (Though it is not a very long book—about 56,000 words). The critical “Editorial Reviews” on the back cover market this as a must-read so you don’t miss a potential hatchet job, but it is far from this. Wolff is slightly provocative in defying the once conventional wisdom that claimed digital distribution would destroy “television”—which has largely been proven wrong at this point. His arguments are measured and well supported (see below regarding citations though). It could be argued that one Auletta piece is unfairly singled out, but Wolff doesn’t take cheap shots. Why not five stars? This book targets an audience already in the know about a lot of media industry minutia. I may try teaching it in a senior seminar where we can work through it together, but it requires a fair bit of media/advertising familiarity to follow. People who work in advertising seem the main target audience of the book. There are no sources cited. It seems clear that many assertions draw from data and are not just opinion, but the lack of references is frustrating and limits the book's usefulness (this could have been Penguin’s decision). It is also odd given that one of the main arguments is a critique of the business/tech press (easy to critique when the examples aren’t cited, but I’ve read enough of it to find Wolff on point). It is often too brief. The book covers quite a bit, and more often than not I desired more depth. Likewise, a few more words could have been used to transition through the book and explain connections between chapters and connect the main arguments to cases discussed.

I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person. I don't need everything written at a fifth-grade level, but I do try to avoid books that seem to go out of their way to confuse me. Lamentably, this was one of those books. After about 120 pages, I just couldn't finish. I got tired of having to read the same sentence multiple times to try to understand it. Better editing would've made this book much more compelling.

Tracy Michael Wolff’s PBS interview motivated me to buy his “Television is the New Television: The Unexpected Triumph of Old Media In the Digital Age.” I am very interested in online economic models, and I was intrigued by his ideas about the money behind old and new media. As the title implies, the book is mostly about where television and the cable industry, the “main providers of digital access,” get their money. Wolff is specific as he attempts to build a case for the supremacy of television, video, and cable over digital media. He names Netflix as“the first successful seller of content in the digital world” who “proved the subscription model.” He attributes the rising success of video to its narrative value, which “refocused attention” and became a “way to watch television.” He uses sports as an example to point out the “extreme” cultural conflict between digital and traditional media. Unfortunately, those are my only major take-aways. Wolff’s “Television is the New Television” is simply one, big information dump. If Wolff is a fan of narrative, it is surprising that there is no meta-narrative here. He leaves readers to make their own connections and to find an elusive significance in this 200-page book. A main flaw is the lack of careful definitions. Wolff’s working concepts of television, new media, video, and cable desperately need to be clarified and presented to make his argument accessible and valid. There simply is no attempt to tie things together: I was especially disappointed in the abrupt ending. I gather he has a big vocabulary, but is it necessary to use proscenium, bifurcated, or somnolence here? Perhaps Wolff’s intention was not to offer a fresh and informed perspective on the economic differences between old and new media, but instead, as the reviews on the book jacket suggest, “get nasty” with his enemies. If he is trying to take down digital media, then he’ll have to do a better job. Describing digital media as “the new wasteland” and labeling the digital users as “a new sort of half-aware audience of coach potatoes mindlessly shuttled between social media prompts and headlines” is simply inaccurate. Television viewers are not an active audience and digital users are not passive, as Wolff suggests. Television is not upscale and digital downscale. In applying these simplified labels, Wolff neglects to develop any meaningful and well-supported argument about the relationship of video and television and their distribution via digital networks. This attempt to cast the Internet and digital media into a television-style mass medium reads like a corporate dream that ignores the historical development of the Internet and its Web. Digital media have so much more potential than merely to serve as a programming platform: freely provided information is a social and intellectual advance.

“Atkins can write rings around most of the names in the crime field.” ― Elmore Leonard “Atkins has solidified his place alongside Dennis Lehane and George Pelecanos as one of our most important crime writers.” ― Associated Press Every year, Ace Atkins’s novels win extraordinary critical acclaim, awards, inclusion on year’s-best lists. But he has never written anything like The Ranger: the first of a remarkable new series about a real hero, and the real Deep South. Northeast Mississippi, hill country, rugged and notorious for outlaws since the Civil War, where killings are as commonplace as in the Old West. To Quinn Colson, it’s home ― but not the home he left when he went to Afghanistan. Now an Army Ranger, he returns to find a place overrun by corruption, and his uncle, the county sheriff, dead ― a suicide, he’s told, but others whisper murder. In the days that follow, it will be up to Colson to discover the truth, not only about his uncle, but about his family, his friends, his town, and not least of all, himself. And once it is discovered, there is no turning back. South Louisiana has Dave Robicheaux. Minnesota has Lucas Davenport. Los Angeles has Harry Bosch and Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. Florida has Doc Ford. Now rural Mississippi has a magnetic young hero all its own, and his ongoing adventures in a world of violence and honor. With prose, characters, and atmosphere so rich they leap off the page, The Ranger proves why Michael Connelly calls Atkins “one of the best crime writers at work today.”

The Ranger (A Quinn Colson Novel), by Ace Atkins

From Publishers Weekly Best known for historical thrillers like Infamous, Atkins kicks off a new series with a solid action-packed yarn featuring U.S. Army Ranger Quinn Colson. When Colson returns home to Jericho, Miss., from his most recent tour of duty in Afghanistan for his uncle's funeral, he's surprised to learn that his uncle, former sheriff Hampton Beckett, shot himself to death. An old friend, Deputy Lillie Virgil, suspects that Beckett was actually murdered. Colson's efforts to prove that theory bring him up against both the violent and the corrupt. During Colson's time away, his rural community has been overrun with meth dealers, whose blight affects those close to him. The contours of the story line are a bit too familiar—the prodigal son returning home to clean up the town—and the setup for sequels is predictable, but the author's superior prose will carry most readers along and raise hopes for more original plotting next time. Greg Iles fans will find much to like. (June)

Review I have always been impressed with (jealous of) how easy Ace Atkins makes it look. The Ranger is by far his best work...I hope Quinn Colson and Lillie Virgil stick around for a good long time, -- Michael Connelly Atkins has written a bunch of great thrillers, but this one sets up a series that should push him to the top of the bestseller list. -- John Sandford Atkins can run rings around most of the names in the crime field. -- Elmore Leonard This exciting thriller leaves you looking forward to the ranger's return. Sunday Telegraph

About the Author Ace Atkins, a former journalist, has written eight previous novels. He began his writing career in 1998, at age twenty-eight, when the first of four Nick Travers novels was published. In 2001, he earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination for his investigation into a 1950s murder. That murder inspired his 2006 novel White Shadow, which was followed by three further history-based crime novels, Wicked City, Devil’s Garden, and Infamous. Atkins lives in Oxford, Mississippi.

His latest novel The Ranger (releases June 9th) is phenomenal!Quinn Colson, an Army Ranger, returns to his hometown of Jericho in Tibbehah County, Mississippi. He's on leave to attend the funeral of his Uncle Hamp, who was the sheriff of Jericho. Quinn hasn't been home in almost seven years. As he reconnects with his past, the underbelly of Tibbehah County shows itself. Meth dealers, crooked politicians and wounded souls populate the county. Determined to hold on to a piece of family property, Quinn decides to stick around for a bit. Aided by his old friend Boom, back from Iraq minus an arm, and Lillie Virgil - a female deputy as tough as nails, Quinn goes head to head with the slime bent on taking whatever they want in Tibbehah County.Atkins has put a great spin on the old fashioned western. Our heroes are those who have faced the horrors of war and have come home to find just as ugly a war on the home front. Racism, drugs and corruption are all coiled like a snake under the front porch, waiting to strike. The dialogue is short and terse, with no unnecessary speeches to clutter up the action. It just adds to the overall tone of the book. Much is said by the words left unspoken. The characters populating the novel are all vividly drawn. The landscape and settings are just as stark and gritty. I had a clear picture in my head as I read.Or rather, raced through the book. I literally could not put it down. The action is fast and furious. Secondary plots involving past relationships and new relatives do add a human touch to Quinn's character. The ending is set up for the second book in the series - due out in summer of 2012. One I will be picking up for sure. 'Cause we all need a hero...Fans of Lee Child's Jack Reacher will find a new favourite character in Quinn Colson. This would also appeal to fans of Randy Wayne White and James Lee Burke where setting is such an important part of the book.

Parker Spenser series. Prior to this, his work hadn't crossed my path. Then I bought the debut novel on Kindle of his new series called THE RANGER about an Army Ranger named Quinn Colson. I thought this would give me an inkling as to what to expect from an Ace Atkins Spenser novel.First things first, THE RANGER does what a debut novel is supposed to do. It introduces the main character, the next tier of recurring characters and then those needed to flesh out the book for plot purposes. Atkins seems to be able to thread that needle in his sleep.Next, he sets the scene with descriptions which are both vivid and minimalist at the same time. Elmore Leonard Lite. There are only so many plots so, in my view, it comes down to the execution of same. The action is detailed and unyielding. You will root for the hero and those he protects. If body count makes you squeamish then read this and sleep with a light on.THE RANGER is an excellent, entertaining debut effort for a new series. Not a whole lot of mystery but more thrills and twists than you can shake a stick at, if that's your idea of fun.Worth your time and money. Treat yourself.

By Cynthia Quinn Colson returns home for his Idealized uncle's funeral after six years absence and 10 years worth of Mid-East tours. He's an army Ranger aka a proven tough guy with wilderness skills. He can face almost anything....except maybe his high school sweetheart who dumped him and married his buddy while he was off fighting for his country. Oh and then there's his Elvis and Jesus obsessed mom and his drug addled younger sister. Other than that he's primed for a lovely home visit but as he travels from Fort Benning to the Oxford, Mississippi area he comes within inches of running down a pregnant teen who's dazedly wandering the back roads in search of her baby daddy. And our hero is still not home yet! He's not surprised that his mom and sister have skipped the funeral but the town's leaders, the three wise men, are there. They have a few drinks, toast the dearly departed, and swap war stories. Then the action really picks up. Supposedly his uncle who was the (drunken) Sheriff committed suicide. Quinn doesn't buy it. As he starts to investigate he reunites with various friends and enemies from his past (and it's not always clear who falls into which category) he finds a hornet's nest of political and financial rivalries, prostitution, racism, religion and downright orneriness. Atkins does a swell job of bringing these folks to life especially against the backdrop of an isolated southern town that could almost be a throwback to the 1800's. From the first conversation you can almost taste the south. My only issue with Mr. Atkins is that he never once mentions home time Oxfordian William Faulkner. This is a great first installment in what promises to be a fun series.

For the first time in English print, the complete story of the making of one of the most significant and influential films of the 20th Century. Originally intended to cash-in on the then current trend of American monster movies, what resulted instead was the cinema's first anti-nuclear treatise to reach an international audience. Gathered from previously unpublished sources, rare photographs, personal interviews and with shot-for-shot descriptions of both the Japanese and American versions, "Atomic Dreams and the Nuclear Nightmare" is a tribute to the greatest monster movie of them all.

Atomic Dreams and the Nuclear Nightmare: The Making of Godzilla (1954), by Peter H. Brothers

From the Author I was seven years old when I first saw "Godzilla, King of the Monsters!" and never quite got over the experience.  The film fascinated me like no other and over the years became an obsession: I have seen the U.S. and Japanese version hundreds of time and have lectured on the film and its director Ishiro Honda at various conventions, clubs and libraries.Just as I had waited 30 years for someone to write a book on Mr. Honda before writing one myself, I was amazed no one had devoted an entire book to the making of his greatest film and one of the perennial films of the 20th Century.  To give you an idea of the volume of material in "Atomic Dreams," my book on Mr. Honda and his 25 fabulous fantasy films, "Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men," clocks-in at 464 pages, whereas my book on "Godzilla" is 348 pages on that one film! The book took me a year and a-half to write and was made possible due to sales on "Mushroom Clouds" which made it possible for me to pay to have translations made on the Japanese material. So now I have paid my modest tributes to Mr. Honda and Godzilla; who - or what - is next?

From the Back Cover One of the most remarkable movies ever made, Toho Studios' 1954 Godzilla was an incredible gamble, a replacement film with a second-choice director initially conceived to take timely advantage of the then current trend of American-made monster movies.  What resulted was a rough-hewn work of art that staggered audiences and confused critics, initiating an entire new genre and the longest running movie series in history. Born out of the ashes of World War II fire raids, atomic bombings and radioactive fallout, Godzilla was produced at a time of great anxiety and extreme paranoia.  Created by a country with an intimate knowledge of nuclear disasters, the resultant film is a treatise not only on horrific events of the past but a clarion call for a future shrouded by a mushroom cloud. Participating in this unique endeavor were a maverick special effects man, a recalcitrant composer, a bold producer, and a director scarred from his own wartime/atomic experiences determined to make a statement warning the world, resulting in the cinema's first anti-nuclear film to attain popular appeal.  Culled from official sources, Atomic Dreams and the Nuclear Nightmare contains analytical insights (including a shot-by-shot analysis of both the original Japanese and American versions), rare photographs, personal reminisces and contemporary reviews never available before in English, resulting in an unparalleled examination of this world-famous film.  Peter H. Brothers has written about Japanese fantasy films for many years, including articles for Cineaste, Fangoria, Cult Movies and G-Fan, and has lectured at such venues as the Comic-Com, the MonsterPalooza, WonderCon, California Writers Club, and the Los Angeles Science and Fantasy Society.  His acclaimed book Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men was the first ever published outside of Japan on Ishiro Honda, the man who directed Godzilla, and is currently in its second printing.  He is also the author of two horror novels: Devil Bat Diary and Terror In Tinseltown.

About the Author Peter H. Brothers is an actor, author, lecturer, director, playwright and poet.  Growing up in the San Fernando Valley of California in the 1950s he was exposed to fantasy, science fiction and monster movies at an early age, in particular the American version of "Gojira" ("Godzilla, King of the Monsters!").His exposure to that film began a lifelong love of dinosaurs, dragons, cinema, film scoring, special effects and Japanese fantasy films, especially those directed by the man who had directed "Godzilla," Ishiro Honda. His book "Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men" is the first in English ever written on the world-famous filmmaker, and his newest book "Atomic Dreams and the Nuclear Nightmare" is the first in English devoted exclusively to the making of the original "Godzilla."He has given numerous lectures on Japanese fantasy films and has hosted panels on famous horror films.  He has also written two horror novels, "Devil Bat Diary" and "Terror in Tinseltown," the first dedicated to his favorite actor, Bela Lugosi, and the second dedicated to Forrest J Ackerman.  "Atomic Dreams and the Nuclear Nightmare" is dedicated to Mr. Honda.

Brothers delves into the story behind the most recognizable Japanese motion picture of all time. Starting with graphic descriptions of the American firebombings of Japan during World War II, and following through the American testing of nuclear weapons in the Pacific, including the full story of the ill-fated fishing vessel, the Lucky Dragon #5, Brothers examines the real-world history that formed the genesis of Godzilla. He then traces the intersecting careers of the talented individuals who gave life to Japan's most famous character, putting faces on them and bringing them to vivid life. Each successive chapter breaks down the struggles throughout each stage of production, highlighting studio politics, creative differences, and the physical rigors of birthing the film in meticulous detail. Brothers follows through with a look at the process of distribution, both critical and audience reception of the film, and his own in-depth analysis. It is an eye-opening experience and a rare opportunity to peer through history and get a glimpse at what it was like to be there as it happened. The book's appendix also provides a wealth of supplemental material, including a synopsis of Shigero Kayama's original treatment, a shot-by-shot breakdown of both the Japanese and American versions, personal recollections written by Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya, and more. Brothers' prose is golden, with an informative but conversational style that is accessible and easy to read, making this a relaxing and enjoyable book. With the exception of Stuart Galbraith's Monsters are Attacking Tokyo, no other volume has offered such a thorough examination of Japanese fantasy cinema, and none have provided as detailed a look at the original Godzilla. For any fan, this is a must-have.

An interesting, if a tad overblown, look at the making of the original Godzilla movie, covering both the original Japanese production and the US version with Raymond Burr. The detail the work goes into on the original film is amazing and welcome; I actually learned quite a bit that I hadn't known about the genesis of the character. As with the author's other book on Japanese fantasy, the e-book has severe formatting issues; it's readable, but many sections may give you a headache. If you're going to charge $4.99 for an e-book, it has to be properly FORMATTED! You can't just use the print file and expect it to look the same. I wish authors would understand this. The length of the e-book proper is only about 60% of the file, as there are numerous appendices, some useful (the shot list of both movies) and some pointless (complete credits for the file anyone could get off IMDB).I can't quite recommend the e-book, but I'm assuming the print book would be easier to read, so if you're a kaiju or Japanese cinema fan, try that one.

Every fifteen years on Mandeler’s planet there are great black winged creatures, the Raptors, which come in the night to kill and take people away to their distant lair. On his sixteenth birthday, Mandeler is gifted with a remarkable red stone, but it also coincides with the return of the Great Raptors. Driven by his tormented dreams of flying with the Raptors, he sets out on a quest to warn others of the advancing attacks. He is accompanied on his journey by one of the planet’s strange creatures, a denzel. As their path takes them into unknown dangers, the young Mandeler meets the street smart Gwenelle. Together they set out to find the mythical olive raptor to help them face the greatest danger of all.   Stan Martin of Wimborne Alberta — "I just couldn’t put it down. I found myself right in the middle of the story."   Richard Foy of Cochrane — "I thoroughly enjoyed reading Raptor Night. It was easy to become absorbed in its mystical world. The writing stimulated all five of my senses, resulting in a set of multi-level word pictures. The “voice” and language evoked a sense of this far-away mystical world, which became believable as the story progressed. Also, the dialogue technique of “mind-speak” was very creative, allowing for another layer of plot and character development that I have not seen before. I hope there is more to come!"   Amanda Shelvey of Calgary — "I devoured Raptor Night on the weekend while camping! Loved it!!"   Roberta Hursey of Calgary — "I really liked the way the adventures carried the book along. The cooperation between the lead characters was credible & the ending very satisfying."   Marie-France Berube of Victoria — "I liked how each character stood on their own, especially the older street smart female Gwenelle. The way the excitement built made me look forward to each chapter. A very good read!"

I bought 2014 and 2015 and will continue to purchase these in the years to come. I just find it such a charming and fun calendar. Every month is a treat and I look forward to seeing what the next month's shoes will be. Some are ghastly while others make will make you wonder whether you would ever attempt to walk in them. Others are just lovely inspiration.

I love looking at all the shoes each month--some are gorgeous and some make you say "what was that designer thinking?!" but it is interesting nonetheless. And people who pop into my office always comment on it. If you are a shoe lover, you will love this calendar.

By MomShops I order the latest version of this calendar every year for my daughter at Christmas and we all sit around laughing, amazed at the crazy variety of "fashionable" shoes. She always has it up in her bedroom, now her dormroom, and her friends love it. A great gift for someone who loves shoes.

What is the true cost of security?Amid a wave of unprecedented terrorist attacks on American soil, a panicked and inexperienced president declares a state of emergency and hands over control of the country to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The quiet and unassuming Administrator Hall soon becomes the most powerful man in America. Determined to stop the attacks, Hall enforces his order across the US, using a newly empowered State Guard to deal with anyone who gets in his way.As totalitarianism descends across the country, battle-weary reporter Jack Emery is faced with a terrifying new reality when friends, colleagues, and sources are imprisoned before his eyes. Among weekly terrorist attacks, FEMA atrocities, and the clamp tightening on every element of society, Jack becomes one of the few struggling to stop the madness. This time though, he's on the wrong side of the law and fighting the very government he's trying to save.

By Cheryl Stout "Only the mob and the elite can be attracted by the momentum of totalitarianism itself. The masses have to be won by propaganda." - Hannah ArendtPulitzer Prize winning journalist Jack Emery is back after his adventures in THE FOUNDATION.After a series of scattered terrorist attacks around the U.S., the POTUS ends up turning over mega power to the head of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and the unalienable rights of U.S. citizens go down the toilet. The State Guard (as compared to the National Guard) is given power beyond their capabilities and suddenly there are food and product rationing, executions, prison camps for whoever doesn't agree with the new regime, and more terrorist acts.Jack Emery gets involved in the Resistance movement, bringing back flashbacks of his time in the China conspiracy.Fast paced with strong characters, STATE OF EMERGENCY feels all too real. This was one scary read, folks. If you hear of FEMA being given carte blanche to run all aspects of our country, head to the nearest bunker and hunker down, ready to fight.NOTE: I received this book from Momentum Books (Pan Macmillan) through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.

This time around, STATE OF EMERGENCY looks at another interesting scenario: the use of a major government arm to further a personal and political agenda. It's a sobering, realistic scenario that plays out as an inexperienced president panics in the face of a series of terrorist attacks on American soil.Handing over control to the calm, competent and seemingly unassuming head Administrator of FEMA seems like a reasonable solution in times of extreme threat, but somewhere in the Presidential advisor ranks you would have thought somebody would be whispering a version of my favourite mantra when things seem to be getting increasingly pear-shaped: Trust No-One. Believe No-One. If in doubt, see point One.Needless to say one of the first steps of the new Emergency Management Regime is to start to remove citizens rights. Curfews, restrictions on sales of alcohol, control of the media - the sorts of things that you'd expect when a totalitarian regime rolls out. The State Guard is called into protect key sites and maintain law and order. Frequently tasked way above their capabilities they struggle to manage the fallout from rationing, the prison camps into which opponents are whisked away, and the riots that ensue. The whole country is starting to fall apart. Officials in FEMA are starting to wonder. And things aren't rosy in the ranks of the terrorist cells as well.As with all thrillers of this nature the threat is big, the resistance is small, and... the world needs a hero. In STATE OF EMERGENCY Jack Emery is that hero, but he's supported by other journalists, every-day citizens, and importantly, a FEMA official who puts her own life on the line to expose the level of madness that's taken control of the country. Of course you're going to have to accept some of the old energiser bunny aspects of hero's of this nature - doesn't matter how tight the squeeze, or how bad the situation, they are going to find a way out (you expect), but exactly how isn't always apparent. As with the earlier novel (and novella) in this series, the action is high-octane. There's leaping and bounding about at a rapid pace - on the part of the goodies and the baddies. The baddies are reasonably nuanced though, avoiding the madder than mad on a mad person's day out cliché. Of course Hall is a threat, and absolutely single-minded in his pursuit of his own agenda, but some of his motivations almost make sense, and there's no questioning the level of commitment that he's bringing to his task.To be a good thriller, any book needs to allow the reader to park their disbelief and any niggling concerns about a few unlikely procedural questions, and cheer for the hero. It doesn't hurt when you can sort of see what the baddie is getting at either. STATE OF EMERGENCY is such a book, and another fun, escapist outing with Jack Emery in charge of saving the day, ably assisted, for a change, by some women with brains, bravery and chutzpah to spare.[...]

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. FEMA Takes Control By Nyssa After a series of terrorists strikes rock the United States, the final straw comes with the sabotaging of the Hoover Dam which causes thousands of deaths and major destruction of homes and property. The President signs executive orders handing temporary control of the country over to the administrator of FEMA, Richard Hall, a career civil servant who has his own vision of what will set America back on its proper course. There have been lots of conspiracy theories about nefarious plots within FEMA and stories circulating about the construction of detention camps all over the country "just in case" of civil unrest or mutiny. This book goes beyond the wildest dreams of those theorists and serves up a dandy of a plot complete with a misguided FEMA administrator, a crusading journalist good guy, and a supporting cast of brave people trying to bring sanity back to the country. There are plenty of good characters to root for as we see each one come to see the light of what FEMA has become in their own way and then join the resistance.I have not read the previous books starring the hero, Jack Emery, an Australian journalist who seems to find himself in the middle of various wars and plots, but that didn't negatively impact my enjoyment of this story. A few of the references in the book to previous events and relationships might be clearer for those who have read The Foundation: Jack Emery 1 or Fireplay: Jack Emery 0.5.The ending left a couple of small loose ends, but all of the major plot points were covered while leaving the door open for further adventures and plots to foil for both Emery and the new administration's recovery efforts.Recommended.A free copy of this ebook was provided to me by the publisher for review purposes.

The quirky and beloved calendar—called “habit-forming” by Maxim and anointed one of the “Funniest Calendars” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show—is back with an all-new year of nuns letting down their veils and having a rip-roaring good time. Here are nuns skateboarding, nuns at amusement parks, nuns playing cricket, nuns on bikes, nuns checking out the latest vestment fashions (“Previewing the Vatican’s new priest-a-porter? collection”) and even nun selfies (“A selfie for the selfless”). The nostalgic and utterly charming full-color photographs are enhanced with witty captions by Maureen Kelly and Jeffrey Stone, coauthors of the New York Times bestseller Growing Up Catholic.

She went to a Catholic grade school and had a wonderful experience. She loved the nuns, their faith in Jesus Christ, their example, their teaching and yes, their wonderful sense of humor.
