3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Humour and insight with a gritty feel By Maclean J Storer Brookmyre has been described as Britian's answer to Carl Hiaasen, but in this book, Brookmyre's anger at a wide range of aspects of modern British society make for a darker, more gritty read. The topical plot describes leaders of Scotland's clergy fighting to retain their relevance in the face of the post-modern trashing of anything that smacks of formal religion. In a world where only tawdry shallowness is regarded as important, the church surrenders its future to the street instincts of a professional PR hustler, who has no scruples as to how he achieves his goals.Mayhem and murder ensue in pursuit of the church's agenda, but in true Brookmyre style, an underdog appears to gum the works, in the figure of the raffish Jack Parlabane, whose morality at times seems to be scarcely higher than the people he is battling.Throughout the book, Brookmyre tees off on several of his pet hates about Britain in general and Scotland in particular - political spin and correctness, powerful conspiracies, sectarian hatred born of ignorance and above all, the hypocrisy of self-elected religious figures.Brookmyre is always interesting and insightful, and comes across as a lone voice of reason (and one favouring a strong Scottish accent) in a culture which appears not to notice its own decay. - Maclean J Storer, author of Forward O Peasant

By Robert Forrester Once upon a time, I was having a pint of IPA with a professor of law, who also happened to have served as a QC and a judge before he retired. As both of us were avid fans of the crime fiction genre, I mentioned to him that I was beginning to run out of authors I really took to: having worked my way through from Raymond Chandler to James Ellroy, Henning Mankell and all points inbetween and beyond, so, could he recommend anyone to me? He promptly suggested Christopher Brookmyre, but qualified this by saying that 'You might find his imagination a tad twisted, but after what I've had to listen to in my time, Brookmyre sounds disturbingly normal.' Undeterred, I immediately purchased Brookmyre's first novel: 'Quite Ugly One Morning' and fell off my chair in a fit of laughter at the end of the first sentence! Maybe it's something about having been a resident of Glasgow that sends the synapses sparking in all sorts of contorted and deranged directions, but, Brookmyre's imagery, ingenuity, insight and acuity are second to none. Furthermore, you must pay attention to the detail. Basically, he has three threads to his works. The first follows the ludicrous, almost infantile but utterly hilarious, adventures of Jack Parlabane. The second: the heroic struggle of a Catholic Rangers supporting copper called Angelique de Xavier, in love with a quite magical bank robber, against the evil, thoroughly evil, machinations of an almost reasonable maniac called Simon Darcourt. Then, finally, the really serious stuff in his trilogy covering the accidental private investigator Jasmine Sharp in her random quest to find out where she came from, with a bit of assistance from a Fallen Angel. Brookmyre is nothing short of brilliant, especially with his Jasmine Sharp trilogy (which really ought to be read in sequence to get the full gist. 1:'Where the Bodies are Buried', 2: When the Devil Drives', and, best of all, 3: 'Flesh Wounds' - 'wounds' as a verb not a noun). He is also the kind of individual who wears his politics up, down and all around his sleeves. Miss him at your peril.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Christopher Brookmyre - Boiling a Frog By Fiona Mitchell As always, warped, wicked and witty. Brookmyre is an artist - who else can make tears of laughter run down your face during the most gruesome scenes? Fooaltiye!

Very Exciting Novel about the Netherlands Struggle against Spanish Tyranny By Merrill Gee This is the second of Henty's books detailing the struggles the Protestants have fighting the machinations of Phillip II of Spain, Catharine De Medici and the Duke of Alva. These three have vowed to slaughter all the Protestants in Netherlands and France. Phillip has said that he will depopulate the Protestant portions of the Netherlands and resettle them with Spanish. To achieve this he sends his greatest general, the Duke of Alva to accomplish that goal. Henty, as usual, puts a young English lad (his term for the more current "teen-ager") in the midst of the fray. The book is very exciting. It is not quite as good (in my opinion, obviously) as the first book in the series, ST. Bartholomew's Eve, but I enjoyed it more than the last book in the series, By England's Aid.

O’Rourke, International best-selling author “Green… demonstrates an extraordinary ability to create a complex but accessible plot, with interesting characters combined with plenty of intrigue, mystery, murder and terror. Born to Run has all the ingredients to set Green even further on the path to international repute as a compelling writer of master thrillers.” - Australian Financial Review “A cracking political thriller… Green’s meticulously researched novel draws readers in from the outset… the action is relentless as the fast-paced plot heats up…. It all makes for a tense series of chapters leading up to a terrific climax. Verdict: Fast-paced and well-written. - Daily Telegraph A BEWILDERING LANDSCAPE OF BETRAYALS Isabel Diaz is set to be the first woman to win the White House. But her chances plummet when a Muslim protégé is accused of syphoning funds to terrorists and, seemingly unrelated, a young Australian software whizz is tossed off a London skyscraper. Then, when a TV journalist digs up a dark secret from Isabel's past, her presidential hopes shatter. With the public stunned, and only days before the vote, terrorists use the Australian's stolen software to launch a daring attack on New York City. ISABEL DIAZ IS BORN TO RUN. BUT CAN SHE EVER WIN? Born to Run, by John M. Green

Review John M. Green is the new Michael Crichton... but better!... A spectacular political thriller... it kept me up nights --P.J. O Rourke, International Best-Selling AuthorIt's what used to be called a 'ripping yarn'. The pace is cracking and it's a great read. --Michael Rakusin, Hale & Iremonger

About the Author When it dawned on John that what got him up in the morning was writing, not his day job, he quit the job. That was after 30 years in executive life. He was then an executive director in a leading investment bank. Earlier, he'd been a partner in 2 major law firms, and a director of a publishing house. He is a well-known business writer and commentator and his writing has appeared in a variety of publications in Australia and overseas including: The Australian, The Australian Financial Review, Company Director, Business Spectator, The Age, The Bulletin, and the UKs Financial Times. As well as writing, he's a board member of two stock-exchange-listed corporations and some not-for-profits, as well as a co-founder of Pantera Press. He lives in Sydney with his wife, a sculptor. They have two adult children who share their passions for the arts, books, business and philanthropy. Nowhere Man is John s first novel. His second novel, Born to Run, is a thriller about a US presidential election that gets derailed by terror, treason, and a twist in the Consitution.

Green, I decided to read Born to Run as well. Isabel Diaz had a poor childhood - with the scars to prove it - and is now a philanthropist and America's favourite in the lead up to the presidential elections. She is set to become the first female US President in history until it is all ripped from her grasp in a carefully researched and live TV show. Also happening at the same time is a carefully plotted terrorist attack on New York City that has the potential to bring the city to its very knees; but how are the terrorists connected to the politicians and who's pulling the strings? What was noticeably different between Nowhere Man and Born to Run was that Nowhere Man had an identifiable destination in terms of plot; there was a mystery that needed solving and therefore the reader was aware of the direction the novel was heading. This isn't the case with Born to Run.In Born to Run, you are never sure what is going to happen next; events take place but the reader is never permitted to peek around the corner or even get half a step in front of where the author wants you. This had the effect on me of a slow burn thriller, and I found that the last third of the book went by in an absolute rush and the heady climax was reached. My favourite character in the novel was Isabel's deaf son Davey who added such dimension to the plot and a fresh perspective on parenting when one parent understands ASL (sign language) better than another. Davey even had me laughing out loud when he tells a King Kong joke in ASL.I was also surprised at the Australian author's ability to fall into US politics so seamlessly despite his comment in the Author's note that he's: "...addicted to US presidential elections..." I must've tried at least half a dozen times in my life to understand how US government operates and then six months later, I've forgotten it all again. (This also happens to me with the rules of cricket).Nevertheless, you don't need to be an expert in politics to enjoy Born To Run, but if you have an interest it may enhance your enjoyment of this political thriller.

By Megington I love that this exists because we not only get to see some background story to some lesser explored characters, but also because of the illustrations and brief bios. It's helpful if you're someone like me, reading the stories as they come out one at a time and could use a refresher on some of the characters.

I really enjoyed this concept art book By Kris I really enjoyed this concept art book, and getting to see the characters, and also read a bit about them. Helped make the series come more to life, for me. I actually wished that more authors would put out something like this, for their books.

Basically gave the background of all of the characters from the collapse series. These descriptions should have been incorporated in the books as the characters were introduced in the books. Also the timing was off from when Cassie and Chris met after the EMP. Read cover to cover in under 30 minutes.
