15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A FAST-MOVING FANTASY By s.ferber "Thuvia, Maid of Mars" is the 4th of 11 John Carter novels from the pen of Edgar Rice Burroughs. It first appeared in April 1916, as a three-part serial in the magazine "All Story Weekly." This is the first Carter novel that does not feature John Carter himself as the central character; he only makes a brief cameo appearance early on. Instead, the action mantle is taken up by Carthoris, Carter's son, but fortunately, Carter Junior turns out to be just as good a swashbuckler as the old man. In this installment, Princess Thuvia of Ptarth has been kidnapped by the spineless Prince Astok of Dusar, which abduction almost causes a world war on Barsoom (Mars). Young Carthoris, in his quest to free his beloved princess, runs across deserted cities, a forgotten kingdom, banths (10-legged Barsoomian lions), ethereal warriors, mucho swordplay, giant white apes, and on and on. As is usual for these books, the amount of action that Burroughs packs into a small compass is quite surprising. Whereas previous Carter books seem to read more like fantasy/fairy tales than science fiction, this installment veers even more to the fantastic, mainly in the use of those phantom warriors just mentioned. These bowmen are called up from the minds of the remaining members of the lost city of Lothar, and have no "real" concrete existence. However, their arrows can still kill. In this book we also get, for the first time, a nice, detailed look at life in Helium; what the people do, how they live and the like. We also receive a biological explanation of how Carthoris, who was 10 years old but a seeming adult in the previous books, got to be that way. The worldwide peace that apparently prevails at the end of book 3, "The Warlord of Mars," is shown in this volume to be not as widespread as was inferred, which makes for some nice tense situations. So this is a good, fast-moving, detailed entry in the series. There are some minor problems of inconsistency and fuzzy writing, however, although not as prevalent as in previous entries. For example, in one scene, Carthoris is said to be fighting a force of a dozen Dusarians; three of these are killed, and so three are left. Huh? Carthoris seems to know exactly where to find water in the dead city of Aaanthor, despite the fact that he has never been there before. Wha? Vas Kor, one of Carthoris' chief enemies, fails to recognize him merely because Carthoris is dirty, tired and covered with blood; this is just a bit hard to swallow. Perhaps worst of all, the book ends extremely abruptly, just as all of Barsoom is about to be plunged into that world war. We never learn the fate of several of the main villains, nor do we see the end of hostilities as the realization of the true facts becomes known. This is a short book, and would not have suffered by the addition of such scenes to make it more satisfying. Still, this is a fun entry in the John Carter series, one that all lovers of fast-moving fantasy should enjoy.

Blankenship I first read this book and this series some 52 years ago...I recently dug them out and had another go. They are as fun now as they were then. Burroughs' style is absolutely great and needs to be savored. The books are action packed and certainly reflet a time in our society long past. I feel to understand current SiFi and S&S, you really need to start during this time period. We certainly have come along way, in may ways, but it is very evident that this writer and his contemporaries certainly had a profound influence on what we are getting today. This are books for little boys and girls and thank goodness I have enough of that little boy in me to still enjoy them.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Like father, like son, Cathoris pursues his beloved Thuvia By Lawrance Bernabo It took the first three volumes of his Martian series for Edgar Rice Burroughs to get his hero John Carter, former cavalier of Virginia, and Dejah Thoris, princess of Helium to the point where they could live happily ever after. Satisfied with the combination of romance and pulp adventure, this fourth Martian novel turns to the next generation of Barsoomians. Cathoris, son of the Warlord of Mars and his beloved princess, is one of two princes and a Jeddak who are seeking the hand of the Thuvia of Ptarth. When she is kidnapped by the sinister Prince Astok of Dusar, the entire planet is about to be thrown into a bloody war and Cathoris has to follow in his father's footstep and deal with savage beasts and phantom armies as he rescues Thuvia and saves Barsoom from a costly war. Of course, by the time he catches up with his beloved, Cathoris finds the situation is slightly more complicated than he thought, mainly because ERB never provides a smooth ending for his couples."Thuvia, Maid of Mars" was originally serialized in "All-Story Weekly" in April 1916, which explains the novel's subtext about world war, since one was going on in Europe at that point in time. The original title was "Cathoris," but apparently when it was published as a novel in 1920 somebody wised up and changed it. Thuvia is not as great a name as Deja Thoris, but it is not bad. In many ways this is like the previous novel, "The Warlord of Mars," where the hero chases his beloved across the landscape of Barsoom and has to deal with green men and white apes. Fortunately, unlike ERB's Tarzan series, "Thuvia, Maid of Mars" is really the only time that repeats himself like this in the Martian series, which stands out as his best as he proves in the next and most inventive volume in the series, "Chessmen of Mars."

Welcome to the future of the walking dead! The Earth is freezing over. After a deep space probe returns with information of another habitable planet at the end of our galaxy, a desperate attempt to save mankind is implemented. The Intrepid, a massive starship with a crew of 500, is sent to investigate the world designated E-eleven-two for possible habitation of the human race. The world looks perfect, clear springs, tall mountains, open fields, even the remnants of the planet's native inhabitants still exist, right down to the structures they one lived in. And there are no native species to threaten the newly arrived human population. It's perfect...it's paradise. A mystery arrives in the form of the planet's previous inhabitant's corpses, found frozen under the polar ice caps, thousands of them, all perfectly preserved. The scientists, in their excitement, hastily bring back fifty of the bodies to base camp, each one perfectly preserved and ready to be dissected and studied. As the bodies thaw out and await dissection, first one, then another begins to move, and soon, they start to walk; despite being dead for hundreds if not thousands of years The crew of the Intrepid are about to find out what happened to the natives of E-eleven-two, and are going to discover to their horror that they didn't die out naturally. In fact, there was nothing natural about their demise. The future isn't full of hope...the future is dead.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. jaw dropping! By t raynes I love the whole idea of this book! I have read several, ok all, of this author's work, he never ceases to make me think..."This guy knows zombies personally!" And "He is good at his craft!" He is definitely an inspiration for writers to bring things to new levels of the horror/sci fi genres!!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Quick & enjoyable read... but might be a bit pricy By Michael Doyle I really do enjoy a good zombie story and when you mix in a bit of science fiction, well you had me at hello. This book read a bit like a comic, quick and pretty shallow on character development or gritty detail. Don't want to be harsh on the old graphic novel because I've seen some pretty amazing ones in my time - but you get my point (maybe.)There was SO much potential to develop on the characters (human or otherwise), the planets, the ship... need I go on? I move through story this expecting each page to give me what I wanted, but it only skimmed the surface.I guess that the fact that I wanted more was a something of a good thing, but the fact that I wasn't rewarded with it was a little frustrating.I'm pondering the second installment because, at $9.99... I have to be honest, not sure I'll bite.

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable read By Eric S. Brown This is not your typical zombie book. It has much more of a SF feel to it. Though there are some editing errors in the book and a few overused words, all in all, I really enjoyed it. If you're looking for zombies and something a bit different, this one is worth checking out.

Review

Classic Rock Magazine (UK), January 2011“One of those books that actually lives up to its title, this may not be the ultimate AC/DC biography—we’re still waiting for that—but is easily one of the finest books on the band published so far. “Rammed to the rafters with absolutely brilliant pictures combing their entire career – many of which you absolutely will not have seen before, and almost all of which are stunningly brilliant – the design alone deserves some kind of aware for its colourful ingenuity, and the way it captures the sense of fuck-it fun that has always permeated the best of AC/DC’s adventures. “Collectors will also delight in the numerous previously unseen pix from all eras, and the wonderful collation of memorabilia, including original Australia-only vinyl record sleeves, tickets and posters. There are also some nicely judged essays from writers besides the estimable Sutcliffe himself. Fair dinkum, mate!” Guitarist Magazine, January 2011“This tome is a beautiful visual history of an amazing band, complete with stories of their beginnings, their steady rise to fame, and the shocking loss of frontman Bon Scott. Then you get the story of the group's second career, beginning with the smash album Back in Black. You can hear the sound of those guitars in every photo."

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Up-To-Date and Awesome! By Steve 1967 LOVE this book! I previously saw the first edition over a year ago, but never got around to buying it. Then I saw this was available and got it - why now? Because the updated edition tells all about the new(est) AC/DC album "Rock or Bust", Malcolm's illness and him leaving the band and the drama all around Phil Rudd, and him leaving the band due to all that drama. Its up to date!I also love the individual reviews of each album by other journalists/authors. While I don't agree with several of the reviews (come on, "Blow Up Your Video" has some really strong songs on it!), it's great to read different perspectives and remember what I first liked about many albums.Tons of great photos, too!If you're an AC/DC fan and want something for your bookshelf that's up-to-date and awesome - get this book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. PASS IT ON!! By ShanghaiSally02 Very enjoyable reading. I went through it in no time! Bright and high quality pictures on thick pages. Every record has its own review, which I always like. Pictures of bootlegs and singles are also included, and you get a good insight in all the adventures Angus, Malcolm and Co went through. Mr. Sutcliffe, although coming across as an AC/DC fanatic, claiming the band has twice the talent of Zeppelin or Motörhead - I respect AC/DC a lot, but let's not put things out of proportion here - is still very diplomatic when it comes to weaker albums like Fly on the Wall, showing a good balance between worshiping and keeping it grounded and realistic. Very nice! Highly recommendable!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Unreadable By Dave It was free so I lost no money. The description is for a short story in which a message from Mars is intercepted and an astronaut is to be sent who will be the first man to walk on the planet. In the 12% of the book I forced myself through, there's already a domed colony there complete with farms. The book is written as narrative description, changing from past to present tense, sometimes within sentences, sometimes within paragraphs. There is also an issue with going between first and third person. I also need to mention that the main character, James, somehow follows his father into the Air Force by graduating from West Point.Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Finally! Someone Writes About How They Got There... By Meanwhile, Melinda I always wondered how the brain to computer interface in all the futuristic books was developed. When the authors write stories, the awesome computer speaks in your head, shows your brain pictures, and you can control everything with a thought. Must be nice, but some poor dude had to develop and then test a rudimentary version. That had to hurt. Ouch! This book is about those two guys, and it is sci-fi at its best. They form a startup for their brain to computer interface, which is big clunky hardware, including a chair. It doesn't stay that way. One wouldn't think this would be an action novel, but it develops into one. The discoveries, the risks, the rewards, the knowledge - it overwhelms one partner, that's when the creativity really rolls. My curiosity is no longer running rampant. Lysle Shields provided an exciting and highly satisfying answer to my question: How did they get computers completely controlled by the human brain?Awesome job Mr. Shields!

Slow to build but great at the end By Bandora Fox The story was slow to build, while I appreciate it when the author takes time for character development, in this case I felt like it was taking too long for the book to get interesting. Minor contextual errors where the author's word processor changed the spelling of a word to something else are minor by itself but when it happened every few pages it got very frustrating.I came close to giving up on this book while waiting for it to "get good" but I was rewarded with a great ending that almost made the initial suffering worth it.I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an unbiased review.

This book probes the current and future possibilities of symbiosis between humans and computers. Suspenseful at the end, the slower first few chapters allow you to immerse yourself in the characters lives and learn their quirks and motivations. I truly feel this is a great first book by this author and look forward to reading more!

Celebrated ad man Richard Kirshenbaum, the original New York observer, reveals the fashions, foibles, and outrageous extravagances of the private-jet set Paid friends. Pot dealers draped in Dolce. Divorce settlements that include the Birkins at their current retail price. Air kisses, landing strips, and lounge-chair bribery. For most of us, the idea of life inside the golden triad of Park Avenue, Sagaponack, and St. Barths is just as exotic as the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle. Luckily, Richard Kirshenbaum has a VIP pass to the Upper East Side and is willing to share the wealth—of gossip. His New York Observer column on uptown social life provides a fascinating glimpse behind the gilded curtain into the swanky restaurants and eye-popping vacation destinations where the 1 percent gathers.Isn’t That Rich? features highlights from Kirshenbaum’s monthly column as well as several brand-new essays. From cash-strapped blue bloods willing to trade their good names for a taste of nouveau riche treasure to the fine art of donning a cashmere sweater in Capri, our intrepid correspondent exposes the preoccupations of the posh. His insider sources may be anonymous, but “his up-to-the-minute portrait of today’s 1 percent is both insightful and a joy to read, no matter what tax bracket you’re in.” (Mortimer Zuckerman)

Isn't That Rich?: Life Among the 1 Percent, by Richard Kirshenbaum

About the Author Richard Kirshenbaum is one of the most exciting personalities in New York City advertising. In 1987, at age twenty-six, he cofounded the Kirshenbaum Bond + Partners agency, which pioneered such innovative concepts as the pop-up store, sidewalk advertising, and other forms of high-visibility guerrilla marketing. At the time of its sale, KBP was the largest independent ad agency in the United States, with one billion dollars in billing. In 2011 Kirshenbaum launched NSG/SWAT, a high-profile boutique branding agency that works with entrepreneurs and emerging companies. He is also cofounder, with music icon Chris Blackwell, of Blackwell Fine Jamaican Rum. Kirshenbaum has lectured at Harvard Business School, has appeared on 20/20, was named to Crain’s New York Business’s “40 under Forty” list, was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame in 2000, and snagged second place on a list of the top one hundred US entrepreneurs. He is the author of the business book Under the Radar; the relationship guide Closing the Deal, which has been translated into nine languages; the advertising memoir Madboy, an Amazon bestseller; and Isn’t That Rich?, a compilation of essays from his New York Observer column. Kirshenbaum is an accomplished playwright, and his work has been produced by David Mamet’s Atlantic Theater Company. He has also contributed to Us Weekly’s “Fashion Police” feature and has written comedy for the legendary Joan Rivers, among others.

Insider gossip By Margaret Picky "Isn't That Rich?" is an anthology of mostly reprinted columns of the same title from the unique, formerly-pink pages of the "New York Observer." Each chapter gives insight to a glib world of certain circles of various types of rich people in New York and those who associate closely with them. The writing style echoes the concerns and style of those it reports on, with lots of dialogue and name-dropping of places, activities, brands, foods, and drinks of choice, but with actual identities veiled behind just-vague-enough descriptive titles.Think of a much less demanding, society column version of Lewis Lapham, but with any conclusions or judgment left to the reader. I don't know any other author who does this in quite the same manner, and certainly not so skillfully or humorously. The only caution is that, while it is very amusing in small doses, read a chapter at a time as it was presented in the original context, reading it straight through might lead to an overdose of ennui.

I kept reading and reading, thinking they can't all be awful, and it's true. Some of them aren't that awful. But most of them are indifferent, entitled, dismissive, and weirdly jealous of others who are just like them. It got so that every flicker of self-awareness from one of them was a profound relief. The point seems to be that money insulates people so overwhelmingly that they lose their ability to relate to anyone not as wealthy they are and then only on very superficial and entirely quantifiable terms.I recommend this book as an excellent inside look at the people who comprise our de facto aristocracy. The dialogue is pointed; the absence of named names a bit annoying at times but the reader gets the idea. Excellent reading for someone who enjoys the deep inside enemy territory works of Jeff Sharlet, but the prose is a little punchier and the sympathy for the subjects a little less apparent.

LIfestyles of the Rich and Vacuous By Antigone Walsh Equally irritating and entertaining, this well written collection of essays portrays the wasteful excesses and arrogance of the uber rich. While Park Ave doyennes bemoan the damage special diets are doing to dinner parties, their male counterparts are busy mastering the art of draping cashmere sweaters. The author plays coy with his subjects, using only cutesy pseudonyms rather than real names. But like escargot, more than a taste quickly becomes nauseating. The author appears to be happy to be the lap dog of the rich and famous so long as it gains him entree into their charmed circle. Tremendous amounts of money clearly insulate these lucky folk from the common problems that plague the proletariat but also seem to immunize them from intelligence, compassion, generosity and kindness. I don't believe money makes the man. Morality does. And the rich folks presented here, are, despite their wealth, privilege and gilded lifestyles, sadly lacking. This is an easy read, amusing in parts and best taken in small doses. After reading, though you might be motivated to become a Teamster, a communist, or just read the biography of someone who deserves the ink like Mother Teresa.
