5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended. By MS-1 Sufficiently well written and concise that I read and annotated the entire book within the first week of my immunology course. It's well-organized and at a proper level of depth; in fact, after comparing the course syllabus and lectures to this textbook, I have completely ignored the course materials in favor of using the text (disclosure: I took an immunology course in undergrad). It is clear that some topics are only superficially covered, but in every instance, a deeper level of detail would be excessive for medical student purposes. This book sets out with a particular goal in mind (discussed in the preface), and it does exactly that — no more, no less. Highly recommended.

Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen are two sisters living in the Midlands of England in the 1910s. Ursula is a teacher, Gudrun an artist. They meet two men who live nearby, school inspector Rupert Birkin and coal-mine heir Gerald Crich. The four become friends. Ursula and Birkin become involved, and Gudrun eventually begins a love affair with Gerald. All four are deeply concerned with questions of society, politics, and the relationship between men and women. At a party at Gerald's estate, Gerald's sister Diana drowns. Gudrun becomes the teacher and mentor of his youngest sister. Soon Gerald's coal-mine-owning father dies as well, after a long illness. After the funeral, Gerald goes to Gudrun's house and spends the night with her, while her parents are asleep in another room. Birkin asks Ursula to marry him, and she agrees. Gerald and Gudrun's relationship, however, becomes stormy. The four holiday in the Alps. Gudrun begins an intense friendship with Loerke, a physically puny but emotionally commanding artist from Dresden. Gerald, enraged by Loerke and most of all by Gudrun's verbal abuse and rejection of his manhood, and driven by the internal violence of his own self, tries to strangle Gudrun. Before he has killed her, however, he realises that this is not what he wants, and he leaves Gudrun and Loerke and climbs the mountain, eventually slipping into a snowy valley where he falls asleep and freezes to death. The impact on Birkin of Gerald's death is profound; the novel ends a few weeks after Gerald's death, with Birkin trying to explain to Ursula that he needs Gerald as he needs her—her for the perfect relationship with a woman, and Gerald for the perfect relationship with a man.

Women In Love (Illustrated), by David Herbert Lawrence

From Library Journal The published editions of Women in Love , probably Lawrence's greatest novel, have always been remarkably corrupt due to a lengthy, complex process of revision and transcription, a threatened libel suit, and numerous unauthorized bowdlerizations. The editors of this new Cambridge Edition have labored scrupulously to produce an authoritative text. What emerges, if not dramatically different, is fresher and more immediate. The introduction provides a valuable history of the novel's composition, revision, publication, and reception, and though the elaborate textual apparatus is strictly for advanced students of bibliography, the notes are splendid. Lawrence's 1919 Foreword and two early discarded chapters are also included. The recovery of a modern classic. 70 of 72 people found the following review helpful. Emotionally Intense By C. Fletcher I think Women in Love must be just about the most emotionally intense book I've ever read. D.H. Lawrence conjures his four main characters in what feels like the heat of a closed-room kiln. The writing is beautiful and amazingly perceptive, but is at times stultifyingly over-analytical.Yet, despite the book's combined length, density and decided lack of plot, Women in Love is surprisingly readable. What makes this book so good is the honesty with which Lawrence imbues his two title characters, Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen, and their two chosen lovers, Birkin and Gerald. It can be frustrating to read page after page of the mental thrashings of an individual mind's search for truth and authenticity in life and in love, but it can also be a kind of revelation. These characters think differently about the world around them than I do, and we each think differently about the world than you who are reading this do. And yet we are all basically the same on a certain transcendent level. We are all human and we all long for an authentic connection with the world around us. We are different and we are the same. That's why living in this world isn't always easy, and that's why it's always worthwhile. This book beautifully and even entertainingly captures those basic struggles for human connection and if for that reason alone, it's well worth reading. Highly recommended.

44 of 44 people found the following review helpful. Intensely emotional but not for everybody By John Martin Scottish novelist Catherine Carswell stated that Women In Love is, "easy to read, but hard to understand." Certainly it is difficult to understand Lawrence, but the Amazon review by Robert Moore of another of his books (The Rainbow) does a good job of describing the essence of Lawrence's literary style. Moore states that there are four ways in which The Rainbow and Women in Love, which is really a sequel, are something new in literature. The first is the general absence of plot. In Lawrence people meet and interact but there is not much action or story development. Secondly, Lawrence instead focuses on character development and on a collection of characters rather than a single one. Thirdly, the characters are psychologically complex, illogical and filled with contrary emotions. Finally, Lawrence's novels are sensual, not just as some have concluded sexually erotic. Moore likes this style and gives the book 5 stars. Another reviewer, Glen Engel-Cox says something similar only with a negative attitude: "I simply could not put up with the seemingly endless vacillations of the characters, the souped-up descriptions of all that they thought, and the plodding story line." Engel-Cox gave it only 1 star. Thus in reading Lawrence one should be aware that one is not getting a great story, but insights into the complexities of human emotions. It is also difficult to understand Lawrence without knowing something about his life and the times he lived in. He lived and wrote at the time of the First World War when Europe, after a period of optimism, scientific development and relative peace was plunged into a war made all the more horrible by the very technology that had fostered progress. Lawrence was greatly affected by this transformation. While many novels have an autobiographical aspect, this seems to be especially true of Lawrence. Sons and Lovers, for example, closely parallels his early life.Women in Love centers around four characters, Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen who teach in a primary school, Rupert Birkin, a schools inspector and Gerald Crich, scion of a mine owner. The couples pair off, Ursula and Rupert and Gudrun and Gerald and the novel largely deals with their troubled relationships. The characters outlook on life is decidedly negative. Rupert, for example, muses that the world would be a better place if there were no human beings to spoil it. The climax of the book, while dramatic, reinforces this extreme negativity. Granted Lawrence was deeply affected by WWI and the end of the book includes a quote from Kaiser Wilhelm regretting the war. But the American Civil War was also a bloody, terrible event and there is no tomorrow-is-another-day-Scarlett O'Hara finish to Women in Love. Quite the contrary.Having read Sons and Lovers and now Women in Love I will not read The Rainbow or other works by Lawrence. I tend to agree with Mr. Engel-Cox in liking an interesting story rather than character study and/or psychological musings. I also think the human condition is not as bad as Lawrence presents it. For that reason I am giving this book a 3 star rating, meaning that it may be very interesting for some people, but others will not like it.

Lawrence's greatest novel, Women in Love is the complex story of two women and two men who scrutinize their lives and personal needs in an effort to discover something that makes the future worth living. The personal and social traumas of post-World War I, combined with the rise of industry and urbanization, have affected all four main characters, often at cross purposes as they explore love and its role in their lives. Intensely introspective and self-conscious, each character shares his/her thoughts with the reader, allowing the reader to participate in the inner conflicts and crises that each faces.Ursula Brangwen, a teacher in a mining town in the Midlands, is attracted to Rupert Birkin, a school supervisor; her sister Gudrun, an artist whose sculptures have drawn some attention in London, is drawn to Gerald Crich, whose father is a mine owner. As the two women earn their living and consider the issue of marriage, which they regard as an impediment to their independence, the men deal with issues of sexuality and power, and whether the love of a woman is enough. Both men have homosexual urges which compete with their feelings for women.Gerald is the most conflicted of the four. Taking over the mines upon the death of his father, he is fiercely committed to making them successful, even if that means hardening his heart toward his workers. He feels no sense of responsibility toward them, dedicating his efforts toward success and power, an attitude he conveys also toward Gudrun, who finds him self-centered but physically attractive. Rupert Birkin, who is eventually drawn to Ursula, is often thought to have been modeled on Lawrence himself, and his sensitivity, self-analysis, and feeling that love is not enough--that one must progress beyond love to another plane--display the kind of agonized soul searching done by many other young men of his age following the horrors of the world war.Extremely complex in its exploration of the period's social and philosophical influences on the characters (who are archetypes of society), the novel is also full of symbolism, with many parallels drawn between love and death, which the characters sometimes prefer to life. As the love affairs of these four characters play out, filled with complications, disagreements about the meaning of love, questions about love's relation to power and dominance, and the role of sexuality, Lawrence projects the tumult of post-war England as the values of the past yield to newer, more personal goals. n Mary Whipple

Time travel is a dream long held by human beings. Who hasn't had fond thoughts about showing Nicola Tesla their personal Tesla coil or taking him for a drive in an electric car that bears his name? The devil is in the details of the technology, which is what ties together this collection of short fiction. The stories in this collection appeared in Analog science fiction magazine between 1990 and 2000.

Vivian Author Maya Bohnhoff, is an apt tour guide on our journey through these five charming time travel stories. Each touches on an encounter we might experience on the way: An attempt to change history, an attempt to leave history unchanged, a meeting with a spirited ancestor, a family's visit to the past, and using time travel to understand a foreign--make that alien--culture. I enjoyed how Bohnhoff stirred my imagination to entertain a hopeful, egalitarian, multi-cultural future.

Used skillfully, and with a good teacher, this classic can go a long way towards teaching the elements of limb independance and co-ordination. Superimposing ostinato patterns over the "as written" notation reveals a world of possibilities.Bass players, as well as others, can derive benefit from the complexities of reading the syncopated figures in this book. Each exercise places quarter notes in each measure so that the student can always see the relationship of the downbeat to the exercise.Drummers, get this book, get Stone's Stick Control, get a good teacher, and you will be well on the way to the ranks of the musically monstrous.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. The Real Thing By Derek Warren If you want to significantly improve your independence skills, buy this book and then find an instructor who can show you the more than 40 different ways to apply it to the drum set.Alan Dawson used this book extensively with his students. Thankfully, one of his students has documented those 40+ ways. See "The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary As Taught by Alan Dawson" (Paperback), by author John Ramsay. Ramsay did a great job of identifying (and providing audio examples) of the numerous ways you can apply Syncopation. An excellent precursor to this book is Jim Chapin's "Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer". That book will help you develop the basic independence you'll need to dive into Syncopation. Or if you already possess the ability to play the swing ostinato while playing swung eighth notes and triplets and sixteenth notes between your snare drum and bass drum, then you can likely dive right in.

31 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Great Book By Etan If you're a beginner and just learning how to read music (for drums) this is a great book. It is good to have a teacher go through this book with you, and maybe add in some things... it is always good and very helpful to count out loud while going through this book. The book is only snare + bass, and starts with quarters, then goes on to eights, sixteenths, triplets, and even sixteenth-note triplets. It also has a few rolls, and in the end it teaches you accents.

Entertaining By cdw1953 I liked this book alot.It was a very good historical novel with many interesting turn of events.I have also read other books by Henty and as with his other books, the story is not complicated and is easy to follow.Henty is a very good story teller and writer and makes me wonder if my favorite author George MacDonald Fraser did'nt read Henty's books when he started to write the great Flashman series.Unlike alot of people who call themselves writers,Henty and Fraser wrote very entertaining books with great stories in them.I wish more authors would do the same.

Better than I expected By Veida wissler I never would have thought anyone could find good things to say about Napoleon 's march into Russia, but Henty manages to do so. This henty story takes in far more than Napoleon 's Russian campaign. It is full of unexpected treasures like extended descriptions of smuggling and how duels worked. I heartily recommend this book.

By Theresa Roland such a good book!! you are one of my favorite minecraft authors!! now for the book, ok so after failing to defend the his first village (zombies got them after the wall of the village fell, not sure how that happend) steve did not want to stay in the village it was cold and lonely, and Steve was afraid of ghosts so steve set out on the great, flat plains. after many hard ordeals and food poisoning, he found another village and when the villagers took him in there village with open arms he decided to defend this village like the first one, but doing a better job than before. when the village mayor took him around the village he befriended a villager blacksmith named bob who let's Steve stay in his house until Steve is healed from his injuries. Steve was going to upgrade the village defense like he did the first one but instead of building a wall he would dig a trench. all was going well until when steve was working on the trench at night a pack(or herd or school or mob HAHAHAH or whatever) of zombies spotted him and, well they just kept on coming until they pushed him up against a random house and Steve was just about to die until the door opened up and Steve was saved by a girl villager named cindy. the next day Steve found out he was in need of materials to build his own house in the village so he went back to his first village to collect materials. when he comes back to his own the village elder told him how villagers are blessed with a special guardian that appears if the village is deemed worthy. for the village to be worthy they must have lots of trades and there crops must be prosperous and basically live a life of abundance. Steve thinks this would be alot of work and might take to long so the elder told him there is a way to build this guardian with 36 iron and a pumpkin. when steve asks bob were to get iron bob says something about a SECRET MINING LOCATION!! thats all for now a I hope this helps you to decide to buy this book!! ---- TheGolem64P.S. pleas put me on the good reviewer list :)

In a way, I think it is worse than that.A couple of pages of intro then an alphabetical list of usually quite short entries. Writing style and paragraphing was a bit amateurish.. needed a good editor. This is an attempt at an "outagraph". I think this fails to work properly. The entries are usually so brief, seem totally irrelevant to Coil, and thus don't pique any interest to inquire further. The author usually doesn't add anything to basic info. Only learnt three bits of trivia, one of which was Coil related (I was already reasonably familiar with the milieu this book covers). Can't trust the entries to be entirely correct in its viewpoint or to be written from any depth of knowledge. Why not just put it on the web instead of making it as a book? In a webpage you can have links to more info...

Farber If you enjoy Coil and have read the traditionally-written versions of their history, Twilight Language can serve as an immersion in the things and concepts of Coil's world. The entries are concise, informative, and fun to read as a sort of bibliomancy, choosing pages at random.

By MLM Jackson The other review is not greatly fair as any encyclopaedic primer will inevitably read a little like Wiki (which is in itself an encyclopaedic primer)four stars > CAVEAT > for those bearded and erudite that have already undertaken the mammoth and labyrinthine explorations of the (occult/art/music) roots which web in profusion from the works of Coil this book is NOT for YOU. It is intended as an introductory guide to those who have yet to undertake this deep research or those who have previously only thought of Coil as mere purveyors of sound. It is, as it correctly purports to be, an introduction to the subterranean world of Coil an is such of great practical use to neophytesSome may find the direct absence of Coil themselves to be off putting but as the author notes it is intend to function as an 'outgraph'
