The Studio Life of a Disney Legend

Eric Larson, one of Walt Disney's famed "Nine Old Men", went to work at the studio in 1933 and left in 1986. He knew everyone at Disney who was anyone, and he kept a diary of the personalities, the pranks, and the politics. This is his warm, witty story.

In June 1933, young Eric Larson sent some of his sketches to the Disney Studio. A man named Dick Creedon liked what he saw and hired Larson as an inbetweener, the bottom of the pole at Disney, but that didn't last long. Soon, Larson became an assistant to top Disney animator Ham Luske, helping out on Fantasia.

From there, Larson met and worked with the very best at the studio, including Walt himself. Later, he gave a series of lectures on animation and established a talent program which brought new generations of gifted animators into the Disney fold.

In addition to Larson's memoirs, 50 Years in the Mouse House contains:

  • A never-before-seen reproduction of the many notes and sketches in Larson's notebook from his 1942 trip to Mexico with Walt Disney
  • All fourteen of Larson's influential Disney Studio lectures on animation
  • An article by Disney historian J.B. Kaufman, a foreword by Disney Legend Burny Mattinson, and a remembrance by former Larson protege Dan Jeup

Enjoy this unique, entertaining, and educational perspective on the Disney Studio by one of its greatest talents!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. absolute "must have" for any Disney historian or Animation bu By Wulfstan This is one of the most important books yet published by Bob McLain and his Theme Park press. This is nothing less that the memoirs for one of the "Nine Old Men" the senior Animators that Walt depended on for the early years.Eric Larson (September 3, 1905 – October 25, 1988) was for years a Animator, lead Animator and Director for Disney. His work can be seen in: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio (Figaro), Fantasia, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp ("Peg" was his creation), Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, The Sword in the Stone, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, Three Caballeros and Robin Hood .Later- in 1973 Eric became in charge of training and recruitment, and trained the new waves of Disney animators such as Brad Bird, Don Bluth, Chris Buck, Tim Burton, Randy Cartwright, Ron Clements, Andreas Deja, Gary Goldman, Ed Gombert, Mark Henn, Dan Haskett, Glen Keane, Bill Kroyer, John Lasseter, John Musker, Phil Nibbelink, Richard Rich, Burny Mattinson, Melvin Shaw, Jeffrey J. Varab, John Pomeroy, Joe Ranft, Jerry Rees, Henry Selick and Tad Stones among many others. Here we find pages of his diary, including sketches made from his trip to Mexico, from whence Three Caballeros came. We also can read his training notes and lectures on the art of animation. We also get a article by Disney Historian J.B. Kaufman, a intro by Disney Legend Burny Matttinson, and notes by animator Dan Jeup. Not as much a "fun & easy read" as others, but this book is a absolute "must have" for any Disney historian or Animation buff.

But some of them have been obscure to me. Marc Davis had the benefit of a career that extended into the parks leading us to reflect on his animation years. And Ward Kimball had a personality that cannot help but fascinate. For me Eric Larson is one of these legends I had stumbled upon and made an impression of, the teacher, but he was still shadow and not substance to me. Now I can say I think I understand Larson in a more personal way.50 Years in the Mouse House: The Lost Memoir of One of Disney's Nine Old Men by Eric Larson edited by Didier Ghez and Joe Campana allows Larson to share about his life and career in his own words with some refection by others. The text is broken into several short segments by and about Larson which include a biography and background on Larson's lost memoir. The main features of the book itself include Larson's memoir, once believed lost but uncovered in some of the late legend's papers. The memoir written in the 1980s discusses his arrival at Disney, the men he worked with, Sleeping Beauty and the studio strike. This is followed by a collection of Larson's smaller thoughts and quotes on similar topics. The editors follow the memoir with a reproduction of Larson's notebook from his 1942 trip to Mexico in cooperation with the studio and the Good Neighbors program. The reproduction includes a transcription of the notebook and copies of the notebook pages including his drawings for the researcher to observe themselves. Larson's writings end with 14 lectures by Larson on animation. And finally, another view of Larson is provided by Dan Jeup who was mentored by Larson beginning in his teenage years. As I said, I feel like I have a much better idea of who Larson is now. He appears to be a "simple" man in the good sense, being true to himself and consistent in his interactions. Larson was a teacher, one who gave willingly of his time to those younger than himself both in small and large settings. And he was animator that believed that animation was acting, full of motion and emotion. Larson taught Disney staff not to draw but to bring living stories to the frame.I do think this is an important text. Now, to be fair that does not mean it is always the most readable. Larson's writing can be somewhat slow at times. And the segments do not provide a biography that transitions flawlessly. The lectures are lectures, they are technical and include content that may not naturally catch the interest of the non-professional. Now that being said, this is a book every Disney animation history and fan needs. Because, you do get to read Larson in his own words. You get accounts of Larson in the first person from those who know him. And finally his animation lectures are a treasure trove of information for those who wish to know about Disney animation philosophy during Larson's time. This text will serve as a key primary source on Disney animation in a easy to access package. And the editors have done an excellent job in ensuring readers get plenty of extra content beyond the relatively short lost memoir.50 Years in the Mouse House: The Lost Memoir of One of Disney's Nine Old Men reveals Eric Larson the man...a Disney legend and a key Disney animation mentor. By the time one completes the text the reader will feel as if they know Larson the man, mentor and animator. And the volume will be a must read Between Book for Disney animation researchers.Review Copy Provided by Theme Park Press

Here's What Others Are Saying...

Alyssa:Pencil drawing is another activity my Dad and I have been getting in to. In this case, I am the more experienced one so I was looking for a book with some new techniques. Some of the things the author suggested here were useful, in fact I use a lot of the techniques he mentioned myself already. This book was a good one for beginners, someone who is relatively new to pencil drawing. I will be sharing this one with my dad as well. Charles Drewek: I've been working on improving the aesthetics of my backyard lately and I find myself sketching on random bits of paper all the time. I would describe myself as an artistic person being able to use Photoshop and Illustrator but I really have no idea how to draw. This book is a great beginner's guide to the basics. It's very detailed and the images throughout the book are helpful. It will definitely help me continue to mentally map out what I want my backyard to look like. I'd recommend this as a solid start for beginners. Joseph Wilson When I found myself in the midst of artists, I knew in my heart that I could either learn to be like them or make the decision not to. Since I've got no other choice than to be with them for a while, I decided to take the high road and learn how to draw. I'm glad I found the right book. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Incomplete when it comes to paying for college By E. Burton This book drove me absolutely crazy! Our family has sent 3 kids to college: a private secular college, one to a faith-based university and one to a large state university. They and we graduated debt free, and we are by no means rich. The book tells less than half the picture. The way a family manages college financially is not just a money question, it is also a college choice question and a lifestyle question. The author deals primarily and incompletely with the financial instruments of saving and borrowing for college and fails to mention some down sides of 529s, only touches upon the lifestyle side and says little about college choice. Here are my biggest beefs with the book:First, family ought to start thinking about college when a child is born if they want to contribute toward that expense. That means college expenses will affect lifestyle choices. The author talks about this a little in chapter one with reviewing cable, internet and phone charges, as well as electric costs, but what about just plain living below your means, shopping used, driving older model cars, etc., and not paying for every lesson, sports and social activity--that's what paper routes are for. By the time your child is 3 years old, buy a house you can afford to pay off in 15 years. Then you will have the cost of your house payment each month to contribute to college expenses. There are so many ways you can plan to save, regardless of your income level.Second, unless a family is very affluent, they have no business going into debt to put their kids through school. Instead they need to consider state schools and schools that completely meet the expected family contribution listed by FAFSA with minimal student debt. There should be no reason for the students or the parents to be taking out large loans. So paying for college starts with choosing the right college for your family's budget. In addition, students need to consider the earning power of their degree before going into even minimal debt.Third, and this relates to both FAFSA and the 529s. The 529 savings plans save money in the student's name and thus is an asset of the student. For some families--and this was the case with us. It was better for us to save money in our name as parents assets are not expected to be invested in college at the same rate as student's assets. So I was disappointed in this book for the financial demographic of students that I advise.

Redundant At Times, But A Good Guide That Stresses Saving Early Using A 529 Plan By Robin This CliffsNotes book on paying for college and student loan repayment has a lot of helpful information on what parents and students can do to pay for college and what to consider in determining how much a parent should borrow and contribute to the tuition cost. It's a quick read, though dry and repetitious at times. The book covers everything from starting a 529 early to "parent plus" loans, saving your pocket change, cutting costs, scholarships and related topics about paying for a college education. The book presents "myths and facts" and also "chapter wraps-ups" that I find the most useful, and gives general answers questions I've wondered about- like whether a 529 Bright Start plan will negatively impact your child's ability to get scholarships and financial aid awards. This book seems particularly well-suited for new parents because it's best to start saving money when your child is young so your investment has time to grow. With how enormous a college bill can be, I think this book is absolutely spot on stressing the importance of starting a 529 savings plan shortly after your child is born. While still paying off my own student loans, I started saving small amounts to a 529 plan just after our now 14-year-old was born (I started making automatic monthly deposits of about $25 and graduated up to $120 a month) to help defray his future tuition costs. Those modest contributions have grown to $34,000. While that won't foot the entire college bill, it's a start and was relatively painless. My only regret is that I didn't contribute more. The good news is there's still time and other sources of tuition money, as this book points out. This book is worth reading even if the take away is to just set up a 529 plan early- just a small contributution each month can really grow over time. But this book also does a nice job of discussing the ramifications of resorting to student and parent loans -which motivates me to try and find more money now as the idea of more educational loans makes me cringe. For a CliffsNotes book, this does a decent job of addressing saving for college, understanding financial aid, deciding how much to borrow and related issues, and I think it's worth reading for anyone planning for their child's college tuition but it's especially useful if you're a new parent.

So this is a good story that is superbly written in the beautiful English that prevailed. It is easy to read and offers more than a glimpse on the efforts made, during the acme of empire, to encourage young people to be brave, decent, and innovative.

By Patricia Phillips Well developed characters, page turning plot and an adventure into an alternative world that collides with today's realities. Evokes emotion and inspires you to lose sleep (so you can finish). Very well done. I am very anxious for the next book in the series. It is well worth your time!

Instead she found herself trapped in the Realm, a between place where the rules are not clear and people are given assignments they must fulfill or face the consequences. After three hundred years, Calla is tired and discouraged. Then Calla and her two friends are ordered to join a group of people and go back to earth to help a young man facing peril. But her new team is woefully unprepared for this assignment, and some in the group only have their own pleasure and interests in mind. As Calla faces danger from within and without, the mission seems doomed. But then an unlikely hero comes along. This was a fascinating story, with an exciting plot that kept me reading to the end. The world building was unique. The character development was incredible: I felt as if I knew each of the people in the story, especially Calla. I ached for her, and I wished she would find some peace. Because of language and adult situations, I recommend this book for a mature audience.

There are a few grammatical and formatting issues that the editor missed, but even so this is a book that is well worth your time. Can't wait for the next one.

Perhaps the best-known and most popular of Edith Wharton's novels, Ethan Frome is widely considered her masterpiece. Set against a bleak New England background, the novel tells of Frome, his ailing wife Zeena and her companion Mattie Silver, superbly delineating the characters of each as they are drawn relentlessly into a deep-rooted domestic struggle. Burdened by poverty and spiritually dulled by a loveless marriage to an older woman. Frome is emotionally stirred by the arrival of a youthful cousin who is employed as household help. Mattie's presence not only brightens a gloomy house but stirs long-dormant feelings in Ethan. Their growing love for one another, discovered by an embittered wife, presages an ending to this grim tale that is both shocking and savagely ironic.

Review Edith Wharton is unique in the intimacy and sureness, not to mention the virile and satiric tone, with which she investigates this narrow and declining society TLS Wharton's prose, with its menacing images of death and darkness, is superb. First published in 1911, it remains a hauntingly stark masterpiece IRISH TIMES

Review "With each volume having an introduction by an acknowledged expert, and exhaustive notes, the World's Classics are surely the most desirable series and, all-round, the best value for the money."--Oxford Times

60 of 63 people found the following review helpful. "We shall never be alone again like this" By E. A Solinas Edith Wharton filled her novels with a feeling of ruin, passion and restriction. People can fall in love, but rarely do things turn out well. But but few of even her books can evoke the feeling of "Ethan Frome," whick packs plenty of emotion, vibrancy and regrets into a short novella. While the claustrophobic feeling doesn't suit her writing well, she still spins a beautiful, horrifying story of a man facing a life without hope or joy.It begins nearly a quarter of a century after the events of the novel, with an unnamed narrator watching middle-aged, crippled Ethan Frome drag himself to the post-office. He becomes interested in Frome's tragic past, and hears out his story.Ethan Frome once hoped to live an urban, educated life, but ended up trapped in a bleak New England town with a hypochondriac wife, Zeena, whom he didn't love. But then his wife's cousin Mattie arrives, a bright young girl who understands Ethan far better than his wife ever tried to. Unsurprisingly, he begins to fall in love with her, but still feels an obligation to his wife. But then Zeena threatens to send Mattie away and hire a new housekeeper, threatening the one bright spot in Ethan's dour life. Now Ethan must either rebel against the morals and strictures of his small village, or live out his life lonely. But when he and Mattie try for a third option, their affair ends in tragedy.Wharton was always at her best when she wrote about society's strictures, morals, and love that defies that. But rather than the opulent backdrop of wealthy New York, here the setting is a bleak, snowy New England town, appropriately named Starkfield. It's a good reflection of Ethan Frome's life, and a good illustration of how the poor can be trapped.Even when she describes a "ruin of a man" in a cold, distant town, Wharton spins beautiful prose ("the night was so transparent that the white house-fronts between the elms looked gray against the snow") and eloquent symbolism, like the shattered pickle dish. There's only minimal dialogue -- most of what the characters think and feel is kept inside.Instead she piles on the atmosphere, and increases the tension between the three main characters, as attraction and responsibility pull Ethan in two directions. It all finally climaxes in the disaster hinted at in the first chapter, which is as beautifully written and wistful as it is tragic. If the book has a flaw, it's the incredibly small cast -- mainly just the main love triangle. Ethan's not a strong or decisive man, but his desperation and loneliness are absolutely heartbreaking, as well as his final fate. Mattie seems more like a symbol of the life he wants that a full-fledged person, and Zeena is annoying and whiny up until the end, when we see a different side of her personality. Not a stereotypical shrew."Ethan Frome" is a true tragedy -- as beautifully written as it is, it's still Wharton's description of how a man merely survives instead of living, hopeless and devastated.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Cold and bleak but haunting By Jennifer Cameron-Smith This is a short, intense novel that absolutely gripped me when I read it. The cold, bleak setting seems so appropriate to Ethan Frome's existence. A life full of obligation and duty, with no hint of joy or spontaneity.Mattie Silver, a cousin of Ethan's wife Zenobia (Zeena) brings a small amount of light and life into Ethan's life. Ethan pays a heavy price for this, as do both Mattie and to a lesser extent Zeena. This is a sad novel about duty, tragedy and mutual obligation. It is not a light read, but it is a wonderful piece of prose that demonstrates that there is a form of beauty in brevity.Highly recommended.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

82 of 100 people found the following review helpful. It's Snowing, It's Snowing! By Joseph J. Hanssen Once in a while you have to put down those current novels, and read some classic literature. And Edith Wharton is one of the best. This story takes place in the cold, bleak winter farmlands of Massachusetts. Ethan Frome, a poor farmer, has a hard life tending to his land, trying to make a meager living, and also taking care of his ungrateful, demanding, sickly wife, Zeena. When her cousin, Mattie, comes to help her, Ethan's life changes completely. He falls deeply in love with Mattie. This being the 1800's, he must endure the stifling conventions of that era's society also. There love for each other proves to be a fascinating story.I loved this book. This is a story that will definitely take you away. You'll actually feel you are there. Edith's detail description of the scenery and landscape of that time are truly vivid. I found myself pausing from my reading to look outside to see if it was actually snowing. I highly suggest you find time to read "Edith Wharton's books, you'll be grateful. I certainly was!
