I use it daily. I started using this program exactly one year ago. I took a few classes and it wasn't as easy as I was expecting it to be. Too many buttons, too many tool and too many words were coming out from my teacher’s mouth. I would have been so lucky to find this book back then; it would have saved me from so many headaches… This is why I truly believe that this guide will help anyone who wants to discover Photoshop’s secrets in short time, to understand them really fast and not to have headaches. Give it a try, after you will learn how to use Photoshop, you will simply fall in love with it.

Although I find the content familiar because I use photoshop all the time, but I an amazed how this book brings up some very useful topics that people who are adept to using the tool often overlook. Instructions are very well laid out and with pictures for easy understanding.

Death Knocks on Hollywood's Doors By Deana I received a copy of this book from Librarything for an honest reviewThe book talks about ten famous deaths from David Carradine to John Lennon to name a few. Each section of the book is a small synopsis of the famous person , their accomplishments and a description of their death. Some were ruled as homicide, while others were ruled as suicide. The details were a bit brief as well as the way each of them died. It would have made a better book if more indepth details were given of each person's untimely death. The background on each famous person was short but gave you a quick look into their rise to stardom or the impact their death had on many. There are still unanswered questions of the deaths of some the author talks about in the book. Perhaps the background of some of the people or person responsible for the famous people's death could have been examined a bit more. Overall it is a good but brief look at ten famous people who died unexpectedly and who will always be remembered. It doesn't matter if you are famous or not, death can knock on a door at anytime.

Stewart, Jr. I received a e-copy of this book for an honest review.Riley Lucas takes the deaths of ten well known people from Hollywood and gives a brief life history of each and then explains how they died and why there are questions that may surround their deaths. From the deaths of David Carradine, Bob Crane, Marvin Gaye, Phil and Brynn Hartman, John Lennon, Nicole Brown Simpson & Ron Goldman, and Christopher Wallace & Tupac Shakur, Lucas gives the reader the facts behind each death. In each case, even if solved, there are questions that linger in the public's mind as to why their lives ended the way they did.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well Worth A Read By Barb C. If you are checking this book out it is probably not the first Hollywood celebrity book you have seen. It is however one of the better books I have read. There are 10 celebrity deaths in the book and they vary from David Carradine to Tupac, giving you access to different lifestyles and different unfortunate deaths. The book is well researched and well written. I was very interested in the David Carradine story. This book has an updated cause of death since the last time I heard about how Carradine died. Things like this make the book interesting and worth a look. I would recommend you check it out.

See the streamlined trains of the 1930s in all of their sleek glory.

In the 1930s, streamlined styling was applied to everything from kitchen appliances to farm tractors as it captured the American imagination. Keen to regain passenger traffic lost to automobiles and expanding roadways, railroads hired industrial-design giants like Raymond Loewy, Otto Kuhler, Henry Dreyfuss, and Brooks Stevens to produce sleek, futuristic shrouds for locomotives. These streamlined locomotives and trains became the most iconic in American history. Even today, classic designs like stainless-steel Zephyrs, shrouded Hudsons, and EMD E-units remain the popular conception of what a locomotive "looks like."

Streamliners : Locomotives and Trains in the Age of Speed and Style explores the historical and scientific context for the development of streamlined locomotives and trains, the designs that became standard-bearers of North American speed and luxury, and the contemporary popularity of the streamlined look in popular culture. Illustrated with rare historical photographs in both black and white and color, as well as period advertising, route maps, and patent design drawings, Streamliners elucidates the story of this fascinating design trend by following the various technologies and styling trends and how they changed the look of American railroading. Profiles of prominent designers and preserved streamliners in use today round out and complete this picture every railfan will want.

Streamlining was the product of the last great era of American passenger trains, when elegantly styled, named trains connected cities across the continent on fast schedules. Streamliners thoroughly explores the connections between style, speed, and the rails.

Many people believe that streamliners first appeared in the mid 1930’s, while others may consider the McKeen Motor Car of the early 1900’s the start of the streamlined rail era. In this book, Solomon identifies the roots of railroad streamlining with Henry Bessemer’s wind resistance experiments on railway cars in the 1840’s. From that point approximately 170 years ago, he brings us forward through the years to the 1960’s, generally considered the end of the streamliner era. Along the way, he details important contributions of both well known and lesser known individuals, shows how their contributions and improvements built upon what came before, and presents remarkable photos, diagrams, and illustrations of their streamlined railway equipment.Names such as Raymond Loewy, Edward G. Budd, William R. McKeen Jr., Otto Kuhler, and Henry Dreyfuss are quite synonymous with railroad streamlining. In addition to noting the achievements of these famous individuals, Solomon delves deeper and presents historic details related to those with whom the reader may be less familiar and/or may not realize made contributions to the streamliner movement. In addition to notables such as the aforementioned Henry Bessemer, some of the many important people we learn about include Frederick Upham Adams, William B. Stout, Albert G. Dean, Martin Blomberg, and Mary Coulter. Beyond those directly responsible for design and engineering work, the impacts of railroad leaders on the streamliner movement are also presented. Union Pacific’s Edward Henry Harriman, Burlington’s Ralph Budd, and Southern Pacific’s Angus McDonald are but a few of the executives about whom we learn encouraged and/or promoted the streamliner movement within their companies. It is important to note to some prospective readers that this is not a “picture” book and there could be disappointment if one is looking for a book filled with photo upon photo of the same models of streamlined steam, diesel and electric locomotives and passenger cars dressed up in various different railroad liveries. That said, this work includes dozens of fantastic photos, illustrations and diagrams to accompany the detailed and engaging historical text. Beyond Solomon’s own photos, this book includes the work of such masters as Jim Shaughnessy, Wallace W. Abbey, and Richard Jay Solomon – the author’s father, plus excellent selections from the collections of Robert A. Buck, Jay Williams, and John E. Pickett. Solomon has once again partnered with prolific author and photographer John Gruber, who contributed a number of biographical essays to the book. The work concludes with a sampling of where some of the preserved streamlined railroad equipment can be found today. The final chapter identifies several tourist/excursion lines and museums, and both short line and Class I railroads in the United States, where these historic machines are exhibited and/or operated.“Streamliners: Locomotives and Trains in the Age of Speed and Style” is a must-read for those who want to learn about the history of railroad streamlining and absolutely enjoyable for those with even a passing interest in the subject.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A book worth having. By prevotor Brian Solomon is a prolific writer and many of his books in the realm of north american railroading, past and present, have been fairly enjoyable, if a bit light on detail. Not quite coffee table books yet not sufficiently informative for some. This book rises from that level and provides the reader with a decent retrospective look at the evolution of the streamline age in railroading, complete with details about some of the pioneering industrial designers who played a key role in promoting a streamline presence in the industry. I am glad I purchased this volume and I expect it will receive wide and deserved acclaim.

It included a story from his Bounty Hunter series as well as one from The Monster Slayer series. I am already reading the Bounty Hunter series and recommend it. I am going to add The Monster Slayer series to my wish list. The main story, Interstellar Marines, was a good short and I would like to see that become something more than a short story.Recommended read.

From Library Journal Ronicky and his buddy Bill Gregg travel east to New York City on the trail of Caroline Smith in this most unusual tale. Author Brand may have been having a private laugh at his editor's expense by exposing these Westerners to some of the horrors of big city life. The tale becomes a mystery, for when the girl is found, she won't leave with Gregg. Doone must discover the secret that holds Caroline to New York. In finding the answer, he meets the sinister John Mark and the beautiful Ruth Tolliver. The listener will be interested in discovering just how Brand gets these folks back to the mountain desert and how many big city vices they encounter on the way. This is an unusual story, part tongue-in-cheek, part mystery, but not really a Western. Recommended for libraries with large general fiction collections. Western fans will prefer Brand's Destry Rides Again (Audio Reviews, LJ 3/1/93) . For a review of Brand's The Three Crosses , see below.--ed.- Theresa Connors, Arkansas Tech. Univ., RussellvilleCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The Star Kingdom of Manticore is once again at war with the Republic of Haven after a stunning sneak attack. The graduating class from Saganami Island, the Royal Manticoran Navy’s academy, are going straight from the classroom to the blazing reality of all-out war―except for the midshipmen assigned to the heavy cruiser HMS Hexapuma, that is. They’re being assigned to the Talbott Cluster, a backwater far from the battle front. With a captain who may have seen too much of war and a station commander who isn’t precisely noted for his brilliant and insightful command style, it isn’t exactly what the students of Honor Harrington expected.

But things aren’t as simple―or tranquil―as they appear. Pirates, terrorists, genetic slavers, smuggled weapons, long-standing personal hatreds, and a vicious alliance of corporate greed, bureaucratic arrogance, and a corrupt local star nation with a powerful fleet, are all coming together, and only Hexapuma, her war-weary captain, and Honor Harrington’s students stand in the path.

They have only one thing to support and guide them: the tradition of Saganami. The tradition that sometimes a Queen’s officer’s duty is to face impossible odds…and die fighting.

The Shadow of Saganami, by David Weber

From Publishers Weekly In his long-running saga of the Manticoran Space Navy and its battles (War of Honor, etc.), Weber has chronicled the career of Honor Harrington, a distaff Horatio Hornblower transplanted into a futuristic conflict based loosely on the Napoleonic wars. These hugely entertaining and clever adventures are the very epitome of space opera, but their emphasis on one officer's contribution tends to give a lopsided view of how a military organization fights. In his rousing second Honorverse novel (after 2003's Crown of Slaves, coauthored with Eric Flint), Weber focuses on how each member of a unit contributes to the mission's success through teamwork, discipline and individual initiative. A scratch task force is dispatched to a series of fringe systems that have petitioned to join the Manticoran Space Nation. What is supposed to be a relatively easy assignment to a sector far from the front lines of the renewed Havenite War is soon complicated both by terrorists who oppose the annexation and by corrupt elements of the Solarian League—the major power in Weber's universe—who don't want the stiff-necked Manties sniffing around their highly illegal (and lucrative) genetic slave trade. Weber emphasizes the role that tradition plays in inspiring our lads and lasses in uniform, reminding the reader that a hero can be anyone who does his or her job with honor, commitment and skill. There have been ten novels and three collections of stories in that series and books from it have landed on best-seller lists. He has expanded his Honorverse to include two new series. The first in the "Crown of Slaves" branch focuses on politics and war over the issue of genetic slavery. Shadow of Saganami focuses on another area of this universe and brings in a new cast. The Hexapuma, a brand-new cruiser commanded by a hero of the last war is assigned to bring a new cluster of planets into the growing Manticoran Empire after a referendum in which the vast majority call for annexation. Weber is able to introduce an (almost) entirely new cast of characters. Much of the action is centered around a group of midshipmen on their first cruise but the action involves many of the ship's leaders as well as politicians and terrorists from several worlds. There is very little doubt that Weber writes from a post 9/11 perspective. The terrorists are being helped by a wide assortment of groups ranging from out of control bureaucrats to businesses directly involved with slavery. Plots abound as different groups and individuals plot their own destinies. The book is long and exciting. Imagine trying to read more than 700 pages at one sitting! Terekhov, the captain, is a marvelous character, haunted by his past and focused on preventing both terrorism and war. The supporting cast is also strong. Even the villains are, in most cases, three dimensional. For long-time readers of Weber there is the pleasure of running into old friends like Ginger Lewis, Aubrey Wanderman, Helen Zilwicki and Abigail Hearns. There are new characters who are certain to become favorites as well. The issues that arise in the book are relevant to today's world and put in the context of good space opera. Fans of Weber will love the book and those who read this as their first Weber experience are likely to go looking for all the other books.

Thompson As Honor Harrington has progressed in her career, she has had to abandon the command of a starship, in order to take on squadron and then fleet command. While this is good for her, it's not as good for readers, because David Weber is at his best, I think, when he is telling the story of a single starship captain and what such a person and a dedicated crew can do when faced with a critical choice or puzzling-and-threatening situation. In this book, Weber returns to the world of a single starship, in the service of the Star Kingdom of Manticore. Honor Harrington appears briefly in the book, but it is not a book about her at all. Instead, it is about a new generation of officers, serving on a heavy cruiser. It's a great piece of standard Weber space opera: fun to read, and a bit overloaded with heavy exposition (I'd ding it half a star for the somewhat awkward expository passages if that were possible, but it's not).At first, I thought the book would not hold my attention, but I was wrong. Once I sorted out who all the players were, this was a rollicking good read. It's not deep or particularly meaningful, but it is an excellent example of the kind of book it set out to be; the five stars are for the good story, the interesting characters, and the excellent fit between the plot and the writing (but as I mentioned above, I wish I could ding it half a star). Highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed the early Honor Harrington books.

Haynsworth IV After going to college with Dave and then later fixing his Osborne computer for him, I read a draft version of one of his Starfire books. It was excellent and I encouraged him to get it published. Later I got hooked on his Honor Harrington books. Where David excells is when he has a narrower focus and this is why I like his new Saganami Island Series, of which this is the first book. We meet students from Honor's teaching days on their middie cruise in the Talbot Cluster. Why this book re-earns a 5 star rating is because he shrinks down the multiple story lines that dragged War of Honor down to a 4. He also minimizes the repetition of details that dragged that book down as well. This is a nice tightly written book that brings more life to the Honorverse, and looks at other forms of corrupt government. The action is well told and the political points of view make great warnings to us in today's world.
