Hunter No More, by G.D. Tinnams

About the Author G.D. Tinnams has worked as a barman, a call centre operator, an IT support analyst, and a software tester. But during all this time he was also an insatiable reader of science fiction and fantasy books like Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising Sequence, Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, Robert Charles Wilson's Blind Lake and Greg Egan's Permutation City. He is very fond of weird, mind-bending stories and decided quite early on to try writing some. 'Hunter No More' is his second novel.

I found it to be a touching story of acceptance in a place where AI evolution has gone so wrong, and so right at the same time. We have no idea how precious free will and singular thinking of independent choice can be, until confronted by an absolute. While the human side of us can be considered inferior, we have so much to teach the rest of the universe.G. D. Tinnams manages to do all that and more!

Great read By Deborah Jay Four and a half stars from me.Starting out with a breathless action scene, Tinnam drags the reader by the throat into a world where things are not as straightforward as they initially appear. The panic of the night flight amid rioting is truly heart pounding, and the relief once all are safely on board the escape boat is a welcome breather, even though something is clearly amiss between the two male leads, Roger and Keith. This is an accomplished piece of writing, and the concepts explored are fascinating and well realised: AIs that wear ‘biotech’ (synthetic human bodies that house their consciousness when they need a physical form other than their space ship), a war between machine minds with human beings as unwitting casualties, and how a random event can put a spanner (or a hammer – read it, you’ll understand) in the works – or perhaps be fortuitous, depending on whose point of view you take.My small quibble with the book was the – to me - slightly uneven structure. There are 5 viewpoint characters, opening with what seems to be a typical teenager, Samantha, which lured me into thinking this would be a standard YA novel revolving around the teen character. Chapter 2 is from her father, Keith’s viewpoint, and then the story alternates between the two for several chapters before the 3rd person, Josella, is introduced. Fine so far, but then when the action really ramps up (and it does, believe me – the sequences on the Amberjack are mind-blowingly good), Sam is left behind on the planet, and almost half the book takes place without her. This made it feel almost like reading two separate books, and I expected to at least have Sam’s viewpoint again at the very end, to ‘showcase’ the story, but that doesn’t happen, and I felt a tiny bit cheated, not seeing her response to the tragedy in the final showdown.Having said that, I would still highly recommend this book, for the concepts, the depth of characterisation and the action – well worth the read.I received this book to review for a blog tour - my opinions are totally unaffected by this fact.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An extraordinary scifi novel By Majanka Hunter No More is a fascinating piece of science-fiction, a novel combining several concepts and crafting them into an engaging story that, although scifi, does sound realistic. The story alternates between the POV of several different characters, giving an all-around experience of what’s happening and the consequences for everyone. In that sense, the book reminded me of Game of Thrones. Different characters tell different parts of the story and in the end you get a well-rounded tale. The main focus of the story is the battle between humans and artificial intelligence. The story is believable and the characters are engaging. The action is flawless. It starts on the first page and is still going strong by the end. At the same time, the author manages to provide food for thought for the reader, about machine intelligence and what would happen if one day they decide to rule the world. The book features a lot of intrigue and mystery, and so many twists and turns you simply can’t stop reading until you’ve reached the end.I’d recommend this one to all science-fiction fans and thriller fans. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Because anything could be out there. And going out is the only way to learn what it is.

About the Author

Simon Guerrier has written countless Doctor Who books, comics, audio plays, and documentaries. As research for one of his Doctor Who stories, he took night classes in astronomy at the Royal Observatory Greenwich—which resulted in an A-plus and the plot for another Doctor Who story. Simon regularly writes for Horrible Histories magazine and the medical journal The Lancet Psychiatry. With his brother Thomas, Simon also makes films and documentaries—most recently The Fundamentalist Queen, about the wife of Oliver Cromwell, broadcast by the BBC in December 2014.

Dr. Marek Kukula is the public astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the home of time and space. Originally he wanted to be a Time Lord when he grew up but settled on astronomy as the next most exciting thing, going on to study quasars and distant galaxies with the Hubble Space Telescope. Marek regularly appears on BBC science shows such as The Sky at Night and Bang Goes the Theory to explain the latest astronomical discoveries and has also turned up in Doctor Who Confidential, where he showed Karen Gillan how to view Saturn through a telescope.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Good combination of story and science By CubOfJudahsLion This is an entertaining read that weaves very decent storytelling (spanning several of the Doctor's incarnations) with an overview of related scientific concepts, explained simply and with solid footing on the history of science. The title, so far, seems a bit misleading though -- I expected speculation on the future of theory/technology with potential to fill the bag of the Doctor's many tricks, so I'm taking one star away. Still, an entertaining and reasonably informative read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Have you ever wondered how much real science is in ... By Brian Indians Fan Have you ever wondered how much real science is in Doctor Who? Well wonder no more as Simon Guerrier has written such a book! He, along with other noted Doctor Who authors, combine to make an interesting book that brings new Doctor stories along with lay explanations of many scientific concepts touched on in the stories. Many of the stories are nuWho oriented as all four have at least one story, but 2, 4, 5 and 7 are covered along with an illusion to 1 (I say "illusion" because it's left up to you to decide if it really *was* him). The stories are as long as the scientific explanations that follow, and for some, it's a chance to read about Peri, Tegan, Adric and Nyssa once again. The topics covered by the book cover topics related to space and time travel as well as what it means to be human. The topics are discussed in plain language and references are made to classic Who episodes in order to tie the show to reality as it was known then.BOTTOM LINE: A must-read for science geek/Doctor Who fan.

But starting on page 97 it looks like two machine parts dug into and through the page, resulting in denting multiple pages thereafter. I'm getting a replacement shipped at no cost to me.Update: my replacement wasn't shipped properly for it's weight and got damaged, top and bottom of spine dented. I called Amazon and they Fedex'd me a new copy, that I got the next morning! :) And they gave me a partial refund! He speaks only when he has something of importance to say, which is one of the reasons he is so well respected. Frank becomes a government assassin to be a part of the fight against the war on drugs. As Frank realizes that his job is not really making the difference that he thought it would, he decides he wants out. His final mission is for him and his team to take out a bunch of drug smugglers. This somewhat simple operation becomes very complicated as he becomes a pawn in a deadly game. This is the second book I have read by this author. He has an unbelievable storytelling ability. The way he weaves a story is amazing. He has this uncanny ability to put you in the shoes of the person in the book and make you feel exactly what they are feeling.I thought the book was great. There was action, adventure, suspense and romance. The book brought out so much emotion....love, anger, hate, fear, loathing, sadness and happiness. I would recommend this book to anyone. You will not be disappointed.Although this book is the first in the series, there is no cliffhanger. :)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and once again I was not disappointed. This is the story of Frank Rodeen By B Hollowed When Justice Fails, is the second book I have read by Frank Stefanick, and once again I was not disappointed. This is the story of Frank Rodeen, a government assassin who has become disenchanted with his job. Deciding it’s time to move on, he undertakes one final mission with his team to stop a group of drug smugglers near the Mexican Board. What seems like a straight forward mission, soon turns into something complicated, as Frank finds himself caught up in the centre of the storm, and becomes a pawn in a deadly game. This book is beautifully written and the characters are believable and complex. Mr. Stefanick can paint such a beautiful and vivid picture with his words that you forget you are reading and find yourself completely immersed in the story. This book is gripping and one you can’t put down till the very last page. Definitely one I would recommend, and one I would read again…. 5 big stars… well deserved.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. You will not be disappointed with the amount of action and suspense By Jessica Frank Stefanick delivers to you Frank Rodeen, a man from a small town in Upstate New York who was called upon to assist in the war on drugs. In this fast paced and action packed story, the reader follows Frank on an adventure from Plattsburgh, NY down into Texas along the Mexican border with interesting characters such as Cadillac Red. With the plot always seeming to change you will be mentally challenged as you try to figure out what is going to happen next. With complex characters, sometimes shady, with secrets and motives of their own, you'll not want to put the book down! The beauty of the story is that it falls into numerous categories - action, crime, western, a non-cliche romance - so there is a little something for everybody. You will not be disappointed with the amount of action and suspense...

Why is every film or tv programme a sequel or a remake? Why are people so f***ing hung up about swearing? Why do the asterisks in that sentence make it ok? Why do so many people want to stop other people doing things, and how can they be stopped from stopping them? These and many other questions trouble David Mitchell. Join him on a tour of the absurdities of modern life - from Ryanair to Richard III, Downton Abbey to phone etiquette. Funny, provocative and shot through with refreshing amounts of common sense, Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse celebrates and commiserates on the state of things in our not entirely glorious modern world.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. For me, there's only one thing wrong with this book. By Vincent Spume There wasn't enough of it. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely value for money. It's that I was left wanting more. I have to admit I'm a big fan of David's hilarious rants and style of humour, but I guess that most people thinking of reading would at least know who he is and what he's about. I think it's a case of love him or loathe him, David basically says that he gets this opinion in emails. Me? I won't say that I love him, I do however admire his wit and find that some of his comments and opinions are sharp enough to draw blood.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very funny, classic Mitchel, but perhaps more Anglo-centric than other works By The Prof I have always enjoyed David Mitchell's distinctive point of view, from the scripted (The Mitchell and Webb Look, David Mitchell's Soapbox rants) to the extemporaneous rants (QI, Would I Lie To You?, and various panel shows). That said, this work is a bit... darker? Certainly more thought-provoking and personal, and less mainstream observationally comedic. I enjoyed it, but I realize that I don't keep abreast of enough of the British media reporting to get every joke. (As an American, I have never gotten quite all of Mitchell's comedic references, and although I have to do a bit more mental work to glean meanings from context here than I do with most of his more universal works, I did not find that overly problematic. Certainly it won't hurt me to become a bit more aware of the British perspectives.)All those caveats aside, this is very very funny stuff.I should point out that the audio verion of this work is read by Mitchell, with his southern middle-class English accent. I don't have any problem understanding it, but my father, had a devil of a time picking up on some of it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Almost a good cry if I wasn't laughing so hard By SophieBird As usual David Mitchell is so funny, albeit in a most exasperating way - due to the state of the world. It is hard for me to read without wanting to keep running up to people with "listen to this..." Doubt he could have picked a more appropriate title for this book.

A border town like Casita is no place for a drifter--especially a rich man's son looking for adventure. From the moment Dick Gale steps into this stinking, sun-baked hellhole of gambling and corruption, revolution, and revenge, he gets more than he bargained for. His old friend Thorne is in love with a beautiful señorita who's been targeted by the Mexican rebel Rojas. A bold, sneering devil of a man, feared, envied, and idolized by his people, Rojas spends gold like he spills blood--and collects women like trinkets. Gale knows that defying such a man could be suicide. Defeating him is his only chance to survive--in a brutal one-on-one battle on the parched desert cliffs. . . Man to man. Hunter and hunted. To the death. . .

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

By A Customer This classic western tail of men saving women, while being a great love story is also a wonderful adventure story. A classic cowboy\borderman fights indian to save the helpless beuty, but instead of man saving woman, it is reversed, when Helen saves Jonathan from his own unhappy life. I have loved this book since the first day my mother placed it in my hands to read, and although the original has a few lapses in storyline, they kill someone twice, the basic story structure is enjoyable. Having read this book close to a dozen times, I can recommend that every person who has never given westerns a try read this one.

I haven't been a big reader of westerns, but I have been wanting to do some historical reading. 'Desert Gold' interested me because it was a western that covered the times that it was published in: 1913.The characters are just good people surviving a harsh environment, protecting whatever and whoever they can. It took me a while to get my mind adjusted to Zane Grey's style of writing, but I really enjoyed everything about it. This is a unpretentious story of finding root, pursuit, escape and survival and it provides a medium for Zane Grey to get philosophical on us during long dusty nights in the desert. Although it may have bogged down a little, I liked the philosophical. Always have. The book has a satisfying ending even if it did finish a little cleaner than it was set up to do.I read this in the 1964 paperback edition, but it would be great in audio!
