Trade is stifled by the omnipresent warlike neighbours, the Spakka, rather similar to Vikings with interesting views on honour. So King Richard helps fund the building and voyage of a carrack, based on the design of one wrecked on his shores by the Spakka. It sails in search of the fabled land of Hind, reputed to be the source of the exotic spices in demand by his court. This is the story of that voyage, and in particular some of the crew members, not all of whom intended to be aboard. Friendships form across gulfs in social standing and the Harrheinians encounter strange lands and people, with customs exotic and fascinating. Author Rex Sumner assures the reader that these customs exist in a very close form, somewhere in the world, or at least in history. Even the interesting way the Pahippians greet newcomers to their island is based on something very similar happening to the early European explorers in the South Seas. His observations on the different habits of islanders are clearly rooted in actual custom, not least in the varying styles of surfing employed on adjacent islands to say nothing of diet. While educational, the primary purpose is to entertain and this book does that in spades. It is non-stop action, whether a swordsmanship contest or sailing in a storm; desperate battles against cannibals or varying fishing styles with interesting bait; trading in spices and people or discovering new animals which defy belief - to the people of the time. This new world is seen through the eyes of several people of both sexes, showing both the thoughts of the Europeans discovering Asians, and those of the Asians encountering pale people. All peoples are very human and slowly the book reveals more and more on the varying characters of even those with minor roles. For the discerning, there are clues to other stories hidden behind names and titles, which are correct in representing each of the many peoples encountered - even in Harrhein where there are two subsidiary, long conquered kingdoms whose culture still shines through. Enjoy this helter-skelter ride, which is perhaps more reminiscent of Pirates of the Caribbean than Game of Thrones - the author shows a refreshing tendency not to kill off his heroes as soon as you get to like them. This book takes place in a violent time, with violent scenes from battle and ordinary life, including murder, torture and rape.

Well worth reading By Malcolm Having met the author many years ago, I bought a copy on line as soon as I heard that he'd written a book.Then followed many weeks of waiting... When it finally arrived, I read it in just a day or two, practically glued to the book. A fabulous yarn!I thoroughly enjoyed the battles, the sword play, the well-developed characters, the events at sea (as good as Joseph Conrad), and the cultures & traditions of the different people encountered on the journey through several countries.The only anachronism I noticed was on page 22. "... just because you've never seen her in anything but jeans". I'm a bit of a word nerd, so I checked & discovered that "jeans" in the plural is quite recent & dates from mid 19th C. I'd have chosen "britches", which has been used in English since around 1200.Anyway, apart from that minor quibble, I really liked the book & have recommended it to several friends - as well as lending my copy to a select group.I have asked Rex Sumner to put me on the distribution list for any further books that he writes.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great read! By Alison B. I got 'In Search of Spice' because it was a free kindle download at the time and seemed interesting. It's a long book, which I liked because I feel like I plow through books quickly. It was full of action and adventure. Even though some portions were a little confusing (remembering all the characters) I wanted to stick with it and remember because the plot is terrific. I very much enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next in the series...there better be a next one!!!There are some sections of graphic violence but they do add to the story.

By Stephanie Wow, what a great book, the author has done an amazing putting this book together and choosing the right characters for the story. From the beginning the book caught my attention. I said to myself out loud this is going to be a good one. I like reading books, but reading this book here has just made me love reading books at least the adventure kind. Adventure books may be my favorite genre now that I've gotten the chance to read such a great book.

The last part in the book would've been better if the last sentence did not have a spelling error. "Oh Takiro, I 'though' you'd never ask." should've been "thought". And in the tournament scene, instead of saying "You are going to 'loose'..." it should say "lose". A simple mistake, I guess. I'm not trying to be mean, I just think you should've had an editor in hand, or at least a better one at most...Don't "loose" hope just try harder or get an editor, you could've even asked an intelligent friend or teacher.*Ciao~~ Monica "S.N." The names of the chacters are hard to pronouce, but the chacters are cool. I love the cover, and there are a few spelling errors. It's fun to read, it's like fantasy, fighting, and revenge. The beside spelling errors, and no magical animals, such as dragons, the book was pretty good.Leigh H.M.

It's a quick read, but it's fun, and the characters are cute and likeable. It seems to be marketed to the 10-15 age range (lack of suggestive or mature themes), but I'm 24 and liked it, so I would recommend it to any age.As a side note - the cover is absolutely gorgeous.

About the Author John Coutelier studies psychology from his home in Hampshire, England. He grew up watching Star Trek and Doctor Who and early developed a keen interest in science, technology, the paranormal, myth, magic, dinosaurs, the great western railway, space and... a lot of things. More relevantly, he developed an interest in reading and in telling stories about all those things. While he now accepts that the ghost he saw in his cupboard once as a child may in fact have just been a coat on a hangar, his interest in story telling has never gone away. These days, when not studying, he spends his time reading and listening to podcasts about science, playing video games, watching TV, reading fantasy and science-fiction novels... he's a nerd, basically. He pretends not to be sometimes, pointing out for example that he does not own a Star Fleet uniform. He does own a few Daleks, but those are just to keep his niece and nephews entertained when they visit. As are the Batman action figures. And the My Little Pony DVD's (seriously, those aren’t mine – they belong to my nephew). His other hobbies include art, photography, long walks in the countryside, violin, and origami. At least it was until his pet hamster decided it could make something much better and shredded all of his books to make a bed. That hamster is now dead (from natural causes). He now only keeps birds, away from his bookshelf. He also comes from a large Irish family, most of whom he doesn't really know very well and tries to avoid as much as possible because they are all very silly and annoying.

I rarely get to come across a story so original and creative, yet here I have found it and I am giving it five stars for sheer quality and charm. We follow the perilous journey of young Kaya and Jennifer, who stumble across a bizarre array of obstacles and happenings after Kaya witnesses a very strange being and must solve the mystery... Their relationship as old childhood friends is a delightful and well-developed one, and the adventure they share is compelling and fantasy filled. I loved the author's choice for the "antagonist", a very nice twist on the traditional villain, and an unexpected one at that. Characters and experiences intertwine and so too does the fantasy and science aspects of this story, I loved every chapter. Having finished this book in a matter of days, I will certainly be reading the rest of the books in this series!

From the Author I hope you enjoy the story told so far. Having entered college with this book idea, I find it fitting that I should publish this part of the story as I come up to my senior year. The college life is not very generous when it comes to free time, but I have written as much as I could at every opportunity that was presented. I suppose I'm nervous about actually publishing the story, not being sure about how others will respond to my content and writing style, but everyone has to start somewhere.   If you're reading this, I want to congratulate you on your progress so far. Life isn't always easy, as I'm sure a lot of us have been told many times before, but just because everyone knows it doesn't mean that it's sufficient for addressing what happens in life. Just because things get better in the future doesn't mean that today should be ignored. For some people it takes more effort and willpower to go about their day, and sometimes it gets easier or harder. To those people I want to say that I commend the effort you put into each day. Don't be afraid to pause when you get tired, but don't forget to keep moving forward.

About the Author I grew up in south Massachusetts in a rural town near the Cape (not actually on the cape though). My interests have always been far-reaching in terms of their topics. I was a very studious child and was always in an advanced placement in school. I graduated high school in 2012 as valedictorian of my class. I took Graphic Design as a vocation, and received a medal for being the top student in the shop. I also earned a medal for being the top student in my Science classes.Naturally, I also had an interest in writing. The Lycan's Destiny is my first "published" story, but I had numerous small projects that I dabbled in since middle school. Unfortunately those works have become lost, but they helped me to grow as a storyteller.I am currently a college senior getting my BS in Chemistry.

I 'd recommend this story to anyone who likes fantasy or action. I know the author, I know he's a smart young man, but being able to write a story that pulls the reader in and takes them along for the ride is brilliant. I'll be waiting for the story to continue!

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Forgotten Classic? By Dan C. Boutwell This work was written somewhere around 1904. It is at the tail end of Victorian writing and certainly contains much of the flavor of that period. The tale is one of knights, crusaders, scimitars, sultans, and of course a beautiful princess in distress. I was disappointed that when reading a listing of the author's works, this volume was omitted. I find it a perfect example of classical writing.Although, I am not a student of the crusades, this was a good book to introduce one to the players. It was certainly an enjoyable read, with appropriate twists and a building climax. It was well worth the time, and certainly worth the money, since it is a free book. Funny thing is, I would have paid to read it.

By Ali Over the weekend I read the Essential Guide to Freelance Writing in pretty much one sitting and it's much different than books of its ilk. It's fantastic. The Voice is spot on, loose, funny, super-informed and accessible. And above all else it's pragmatic. I felt like I’d had a conversation with an industry insider in a one on one. Covers everything from formulating pitch ideas, to the right and wrong ways to draft cover emails (with humorous examples much like SAT practice samples that sharpen your critical eye) to hints at how to retrieve industry contacts in the Web. And in my opinion, a nice touch was the shift of gears in the last pages, taking the reader back to the reason why one (if the writing bug has luckily bit your soul) follows this 'sacred’ vocation, as Zac says. Punched the impulse one had when initially wanting to read it. I’ve recommended it to couple of friends already.

Marquez This book is the book you need if you want to learn how to sell your writing to magazines, newspapers, and websites. From doing your research to crafting a cover letter to writing a pitch, Petit gives essential tips and illustrative examples. If you've never freelanced before, or if you've sold a few pieces, and you'd like a little more consistency to your writing and pitching process, this book is for you. It's also extremely well-designed and layed-out, with some pages as info-graphics, all which serve to keep the information clear and accessible. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to write for publications, and even as a gift for graduating college and graduate school students, for whom writing could be part of their post-school lives.

You can feel Paul's love of improv through the text, not just his understanding of the exhilarating feeling one gets by preforming, but also the connections that occur between performers, new or experienced, which is the magic of improv. This book is also technically wonderful, breaking down the tools to preforming great improv, not only through well curated games and techniques but also videos to show those games and techniques in action. I host a local improv meetup group where I coach beginners, and I also preform, and I refer to this book constantly for game ideas, techniques and teaching tips. An amazing guide, highly recommended!

By A Customer Rudolph Spielmann's book is a fascinating insight into the thinking that inspires successful attacking play. Spielmann, an Austrian master, was considered of the most ferocious attackers of his days in the 1920's. His style of play is strikingly similar to the celebrated Mikhail Tal. If Alexei Shirov is today considered the descendant of Tal, then Spielmann should be considered his forerunner. Spielmann's philosophy was total distain of material in pursuit of the greater goal of mating the king. His book gives numerous examples of his play and would recommend this book to anyone who loves Tal. The book contains complete games played by Spielmann against some of the leading players of his time and is grouped into thematic chapters. The only slight drawback is the book is in the descriptive notation but this a small price to pay for this frank and personal insight into the mind of an attacking genius.

34 of 37 people found the following review helpful. This is not another "hacking" manual, but gives ideas about how to think about sacrificing. By Andre E. Harding Rudolf Spielmann's work is not perfect, but if read in the right frame-of-mind can be an extremely rewarding read.This is not a manual on the mechanics of kingside attacks, in the vein of Vukovic's "Art of Attack in Chess," or Znosko-Borovsky's "The Art of Chess Combination." Neither is it a tactical workbook, such as Fred Reinfeld's works or Fred Wilson's works or, for that matter, Laszlo Polgar's magnum opus "Chess: 5,334 Problems, Combinations, and Games." Every one of those books/authors mentioned is worth reading, but this is a DIFFERENT KIND of work.The book that readily comes to mind as being in the same "family" as this work is Tal and Damsky's "Attack with Mikhail Tal," but unlike that (masterpiece!) Spielmann's work does not require a Master's Degree in Attacking Chess! :-)Now that I've compared "The Art of Sacrifice in Chess" to other types of attacking books you may be thinking of purchasing, let me finally speak about the book itself!Yes, Spielmann's choice of classification and terminology may be called into question, but that does not in any way detract from the book itself. What Spielmann does in this book better than any other intermediate book I can think of, is reveal HOW THE SACRIFICE AFFECTS THE REMAINING PIECES ON THE ATTACKING AND DEFENDING SIDES! For example, one of his games begins 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e5 Nfd7 and now Spielmann plays 4.e6!? After 4...fxe6, Spielmann brilliantly demonstrates (through his play and especially through the annotations!) how White was able to win the game by constricting the Black forces behind the e-pawns on e7,e6. The line of thinking runs: if there is a pawn on e6 (extra though it may be), the bishop on c8 cannot really come out, which in turn entombs the rook on a8! There are other similar examples of this thought process throughout the book. You will also notice how, for example, minor piece sacrifices in the center suddenly cause the attacking side's rooks and queen to spring to life with decisive force!Many of the examples in the book are complex, but in nearly all cases you can see Spielmann's THOUGHT PROCESS, and you understand why he made the decisions he made. To me this book has a lot of value, and thank goodness it is a departure from all those insipid Morphy games with "sac, sac, mate" on f7 against an uncastled king.

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. A must read By A Customer Spielmann was a great combinative player from the first half of the 20th century. He played against Capablanca, Alekhine, Lasker, Tarrasch, Rubinstein etc. In this fabulous book he explains the foundation of combinative play: deep positional understanding, and not necessarily calculation power. In practical play it is most of the times not possible to calculate all the ramifications of a "real sacrifice" (this is Spielmann's therminology for those sacrifices which do not yield an immediate check mate or recovery of the material sacrificed). In such cases the sacrifice is based on positional understanding, not calculation power. Tal used to play like this; Shirov comes to mind as another example. A classic book. For this price do not think twice: buy it!

Compelling Spy Novel ***** By marilyn sullivan This novel is a compelling synopsis of Jet's life and how she became the most lethal operative in Mossad. It begins with Maya a.k.a. operative code named Jet performing her mandatory service in the Israeli Defence Force stationed at a checkpoint in the West Bank. Her misogynistic superior officer pulls out all stops attempting to destroy her because she rebuffed his advances. Headstrong Jet refuses to be outdone. Mossad agents take notice of her talents and recruit her. Less than one percent of applicants complete the rigorous training required. As always Maya surpasses their expectations. After this she is thrust into the field as a novice Mossad operator.. Jet is set in a support role to get her feet wet. She begins to emerge as a talented, quick thinking, spy unlike ever seen before. Her analysis of people and unfolding situations are uncanny. This is a fast paced, breath taking, action packed thriller. It has terrorists and villains galore. It has a well written plot with unexpected twists and turns. This is a must read episode of Jet and well worth the purchase price. Thank You!

When a new Jet seriesbook came out I didn't hesitate to buy it due to it's high pace thrilling story. I was not disappointed. This book lives up to the series in all aspects, plus it was great to get beginning story of Jet. Thank you Mr. Blake please continue as I never tire of your story telling tallent. Highly recommend readers to this series.

In the Beginning By Jim Hendricks A well written, action packed, suspense filled story of how Maya Weiss became the kick ass heroine we've come to know as Jet. The OPs Files gives us more depth to an already well developed character and her story. An entertaining, as always, read from the master of over-the-top action. Looking forward to more Jet stories.

About the Author James Dreier is a drum set-Latin percussion specialist, educator, clinician, and performer. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) and a Master of Arts degree in music theory from the University of Iowa. Dreier has made frequent research trips to Brazil and Cuba where he studied with local master drummers and musicians. Dreier was a founding member of the Iowa based-Latin/jazz group Orquesta Alto Maiz who released eight CDs over a 26 year span. He now leads his own Latin jazz group Ritmocano, who released their CD Familia, A Latin Jazz Journey under the Realtown record label in 2014. In 2015, Dreier published his book, Latin Jazz Guide, A Path To Authentic Percussion and Ensemble Performance (Hal Leonard Corp.). As a full time Lecturer at the University of Iowa, Dreier s duties include teaching Jazz Improvisation for Drum Set, Jazz Cultures in America and Abroad, directing the Latin-jazz Ensemble and the Hawkeye Big Band. He also performs frequently with a variety of bands and ensembles, including the UI Jazz Faculty group. Dreier is an educational artist for Sabian Cymbals

By Al Naylor This is the best book on Latin Jazz that I have seen or used in my nearly 30 years is teaching and playing Latin Jazz. It has been very carefully researched through studies with the masters in Cuba and Brazil, as well as in practice in a wide variety of performance and teaching venues. With the accompanying web site for demonstrations, as well as the concise way the various rhythms are presented in the book itself, it all adds up to just what I have been looking for in my teaching and composing. This is the most complete package for learning or teaching Latin Percussion I've yet encountered. Bravo to Mr. Dreier on his work to create this gem in the wide world of Latin Percussion.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. OK, I'm hooked on this author, now let's finish some of the stories (pleeeeeassse) By RSTJA The storyline was great. I won't spoil the plot. I am a big fan of this genre, and this book didn't disappoint me. In the end, as with another book by this author (Billy Todd), I was left dying for a sequel. I gave the book high marks, but if I knew for sure that this was the end of the series, I would have been inclined to lower my score. Try as I have, I can't find evidence that the author is planning sequels for the excellent - but in my opinion still open in terms of plot completeness - books. A good example of a complete story would be Earth Abides. That book was a multi-course meal, dessert included, whereas this story seemed to have omitted dessert and maybe even a portion of the main meal. I would much rather an author complete a story in 1 book, or at most 2. The present trend of endless sequels seems to sidestep the all important quality of an author to paint a complete picture in one work of art.In a way, I "hire" an author to do a complete body of work; I hire contractors to do the same thing in my house. If my contractor started to leave work unfinished, and would show up periodically to incrementally make progress toward a shifting finish line, I would tire of it and find another contractor. I maintain it should be no different for readers and their chosen author.Dear NC Reed, please pity us and let us know what your fine characters are up to now. I miss them and need to elbow my way back into their world, a world far more interesting than much of my reality

As usual the ending demands a sequel, of course!If you are looking for a book that offers you absolutely outstanding characterizations, surprising plot twists, and a unique treatment of the standard "pandemic" novel, READ THIS BOOK TODAY! The characters develop as the story moves along, ultimately turning into people you would like to know. I am becoming a serious fan of this author with my only reservation being that almost every novel begs for a sequel or two! ENJOY

He was orphaned at an early age and worked as a cowhand during his formative years and attended the University of California, where he was known as a troublemaker. work influenced Louis L'Amour and hundreds of other western authors who followed the literary trail Brand had blazed.This is one of his best novels, violet, yet powerful, funny, about East meets West, and the West winning! All with an ending that only Max could write. In some ways, it's sad these days are now gone - except for being able to pick up his novels once again. If you have never read one of his westerns, you could do no better than to pick up this one.
