Graff The Insane RootI found very little about exactly what this story was about when I considered the purchase. I did not buy it here but felt it needed better description/review since I had such difficulty finding one. The one I found was from a magazine publication with book reviews from 1902.A woman has two lovers--a handsome man with an evil soul, a homely man with a noble soul. The latter. Dr. Marillier, assumes the body of the former, Ruel Bey, while it lies unconscious, and seeks Rachel. She perceives a difference of temperament and conduct, and presently begins to recognize Marillier. In developing this weird situation oriental passion and mysticism are well handled and the events of every-day life at a foreign embassy in London are so used as to give an impression of realism. The meaning and vitality of the romance lies in its unusual presentation of the old but ever-interesting problem of the Soul and the Body. Perhaps it might be termed uncanny, but so might " Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

Australian SF Reader By average Praed had a thing for spiritualism and the occult later on, and this shows it, an occult romance I guess you could call it.Mandrake being a handy plant :"By the might of those Forces he had compelled to his service the occult power contained in the mandrakeroot;-"
