By Mary V Just finished reading this book and while it is not a genre that I usually look for, I can say that I felt like I was on a roller coaster ride right up to the end. Plot twists galore. Great read for a day at the beach.

By Amazon Customer I was gifted an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.I began reading this story with no real idea of what to expect. Chris and Lexi are faced with a world turned completely upside down, and it seems as though everyone around them has become an enemy. The story was intriguing, and I desperately wanted them to come through safely. However, I found myself having to fight to stay in the story. The dialog felt formal, and I found there was a fair bit of head hopping, perhaps too much so. At times characters seemed to know or experience things felt by someone unconnected to them. The concept for this story was amazing and unique. While I felt that it fell short of its potential, with too much tell and not enough show, I found the action sequences to be thrilling and engaging.Overall, I enjoyed this story. It progressed well. I enjoyed the twists and turns, the surprises and the unexpected that it brought repeatedly. The ending of this story left me feeling satisfied.

If you want a story that will keep you on your toes, full of twists and turns ... this book is for you. Rogue is not what I would describe as a slow, easy read, and for that I am thankful! (There are way too many of the same me-too, slow stories out there!) The authors unfold Lexi and Chris' story in well-paced blocks, and I felt as if I experienced everything with them step by step. I don't want to give away the plot, but you will quickly see that this story isn't just another story about a couple on the run. This story was well - written and incredibly thought out, and I look forward to more work from these authors.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I feel misled - spoilers in review By Amazon Customer Ito is kidnapped by aliens. He is drugged through most of the book so the point of view is mostly from his captors perspective. One is a sadistic rapist and the other is slightly sympathetic idiot. Really horrible things happen one after another to Ito. As for humor, not so much. There is no romance either unless everyone raving about Ito's beauty counts. This book frustrated me. I will not get the next one.

This is a new university textbook on public speaking. Relevant theory, ancient wisdom, biblical insights and the needs of our students have guided the content of this book. Its pedagogy follows that of Duane Litfin, Steven Lucas, Nick Morgan, Peggy Noonan and Raymond Ross who believe that students are better served by a theory and practice approach than by all practice or all theory. The ideas presented here can help us become the compassionate communicators God intends for us to be—people who speak with a redeemed human voice—a voice that makes not only our personal stories, but their telling, truly redemptive.

By Amazon Customer I’m currently using “Communication Matters” in my undergraduate program. This book is clear and engaging. The book is well-organized and well-written with language that younger students can understand but also with depth and fresh intake that challenges me even now as a senior in my Communication degree program. Marty covers issues such as sensitivity, cultural-identities and nonverbal communication – all of which are essential to have a strong understanding of when striving to be a strong communicator. The text is also excellent in the way that it collides relevant theory and biblical concepts. I highly recommend this text as a student and young professional.

By A Customer A great escape, the author leaves you with a lot of questions on what really happened during the interwar period and how it has impacted our modern world. For a debut novel, Keen tackles patriotism, rifles, the golden age of commercial aviation, Pacific geography, and virology all in package. Easy read, served me well on a recent weekend vacation.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Like reading a Crichton novel! By Avid Reader Whenever I can't bring myself to put a book down to attend to mundane tasks, it is a great book. I like to learn without being taught, and this book taught me a ton of history, not to mention the little tidbits of information. Enjoyed the characters and sense of adventure. Reading Mark Keen is like reading a Michael Crichton adventure.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Gabriel's Oboe By delusional This sheet music actually came in two arrangements. One for solo piano and one for oboe solo with piano accompaniment. I found that the score for piano and oboe is actually well suited to play, as is, on the organ (treating the score as a 3-stave organ arrangement). The oboe solo score is printed on the back of the piano solo score. That is somewhat odd, but I consider the piano solo arrangement as kind of an unexpected bonus, anyway, so I didn't mind that the oboe and piano solos were printed on the same piece of paper.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It was just what was needed! By Amazon Customer Very good publication - the printing was easy to ready and had both piano only and piano with Oboe the later worked very well.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Oboe music By A. M. Noftz Music was hard to read. Really skinny notes and staff lines. Recopied it and made it bold and it was much more readable.

Marilyn Monroe made history by standing over a subway grating in a white pleated halter dress designed by William Travilla. Hubert de Givenchy immortalized the Little Black Dress with a single opening scene in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. A red nylon jacket signaled to audiences that James Dean was a Rebel Without a Cause. For more than a century, costume designers have left indelible impressions on moviegoers’ minds. Yet until now, so little has been known about the designers themselves and their work to complement and enrich stories through fashion.

Creating the Illusion presents the history of fashion on film, showcasing not only classic moments from film favorites, but a host of untold stories about the creative talent working behind the scenes to dress the stars from the silent era to the present day. Among the book’s sixty-five designer profiles are Clare West, Howard Greer, Adrian, Walter Plunkett, Travis Banton, Irene, Edith Head, Cecil Beaton, Bob Mackie, and Colleen Atwood. The designers’ stories are set against the backdrop of Hollywood: how they collaborated with great movie stars and filmmakers; how they maneuvered within the studio system; and how they came to design clothing that remains iconic decades after its first appearance. The array of films discussed and showcased through photos spans more than one hundred years, from draping Rudolph Valentino in exotic “sheik” dress to the legendary costuming of Gone with the Wind, Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, Bonnie and Clyde, Reservoir Dogs, and beyond.

This gloriously illustrated volume includes candid photos of the designers at work, portraits and wardrobe tests of stars in costume, and designer sketches. Drawing from archival material and dozens of new interviews with award-winning designers, authors Jay Jorgensen and Donald L. Scoggins offer a highly informative, lavish, and entertaining history of Hollywood costume design.About TCM:Turner Classic Movies is the definitive resource for the greatest movies of all time. It engages, entertains, and enlightens to show how the entire spectrum of classic movies, movie history, and movie-making touches us all and influences how we think and live today.

The research on the early designers, Clare West and Lucia "Mother" Coulter alone would make this worth securing a copy. The photographs are very well selected to accompany the text. I appreciate that the authors went the distance on the early designers and did so well on choosing modern designers. Some great information on designers like Travis Banton and Howard Greer as well. This is an essential book for those who are interested in the topic of film fashion. Kudos.

By BigApe I’m in heaven right now and not much could improve it… I have been waiting for a book like this for years and I could not be more impressed! It is beautifully designed and laid-out. Fascinating to read and perfectly comprehensive on the designers showcased, with the right amount of text for each. Over and above the fact that it is an essential reference book, it lets you connect to the human side of these designers that you’ve admired for years, yet knew so little of. These stories vanish as we do…but it’s good to know that someone took great care to save what he could find over the years, so he could share them with us in such a beautiful package. You will LOVE this book!

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I love Hollywood and I love movie fashion By MARILYN LOVER I love Hollywood and I love movie fashion. This incredible book is a gold mine for anyone who enjoys the magic and glamour of old or new Hollywood. Starting with the silent movie era, Jorgensen and Scoggins follow every major and minor designer and illustrate their amazing creations up through the present time. The photos are sumptuous and the text enlightening and always entertaining. This book is classy in every way and a must for every cinema lover's library. Reading this book made me aware more the ever of the tremendous importance of costume to a movie's success and the brilliant work of these talented designers that the movie studios were lucky enough to put under contract. These costumes are works of art and have been so under appreciated. Hats off to Jay Jorgensen and Donald Scoggins for giving us this magnificent tome.

A Zombie novel set in the surrounding areas of Birmingham, a story of death, legends and new found heroes. Do you have what it takes to survive a Zombie apocalypse in a motorway service station? “Now listen to me Hitzenspinkle (alas, he wasn't aware of the legalities). We could become very rich and important men with this serum. If we can reproduce its components and successfully control it, then we could eventually control the world and make millions!” (He failed to roar 'Muhahahah' but you could see it etched on his face). Proff H (as he shall now be known) was wearing a look of sheer horror and disgust as he turned to his colleague and spat out the words “You monster! We shall see what Doctor White has to say about this very thing!” and turned on his heels toward the myriad of circular corridors which would eventually lead to the High Office of the Main Man that ruled this building. Hot on his heels was a pleading and possessed Proff B who was throwing in the words “Only joking” as if his life depended on it.....!

By Assassin As an avid zombie fan, it is rude not to try new books when they come out, I feel that the writer kept me engaged throughout and although at times the book is serious (as expected with a zombie book) there are some epic funny moments, that really tickled me. The characters are believable, the location is real and you could easily imagine it happening when stopping for a break at the services.A welcome addition to the Kindle store and the story is left open for a possible second book (?) so I hope the author continues with the journey so we can see what happens.

A reader looking for the mainstream works by Verne has multiple options - those of us who want to read a larger selection of his works ...must search!"The Underground City" is a relatively short but entertaining novel. The first 100 pages read very fast - and reminded me strongly of "Journey to the Center of the Earth". The final 80 pages were a little more hoo-hum... and I was left disappointed in the ending. In fact, the novel was a little disjointed - and I wondered if this was one of the woks that was finished by Verne's son after his death (Which I still do not know). Some reveiwers find the story unrealistic... well that is to be expected by Verne. While many think of his works as "Science Fiction" I think they have moved to the genre of fantasy. Verne transports you to a time and place where science was seen as having limitless possibilities... now in the 21st century we better understand what is possible and what is just our imagination."The Underground City" is a typical work by Verne. Certainly not his greatest work - it really doesn't compare to "The Mysterious Island". Yet, most fans will be satisified that they were able to find and read something that is just "typical" Verne.

14 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Don't Buy This Edition! By Gretchen Renshaw This is a poorly formatted edition of the public domain translation available several places on the internet. This translation was heavily edited for the english language edition by Verne's publisher. For a new translation from the original french version, containing three more chapters, try ISBN 1-84282-080-x. It is more enjoyable reading.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. not typical, but worth reading By Amazon Customer With so many formula cookie cutter books being published these days, it's refreshing to find this little known gem by the famous Jules Verne. While not his best book, Verne was still better on his weaker days than many others writers on their best days. Well worth the price. You won't be disappointed.

Fearing the rapid disappearance of indigenous cultures, twentieth-century American ethnographers turned to the phonograph to salvage native languages and musical practices.  Prominent among these early “songcatchers” were white women of comfortable class standing, similar to the female consumers targeted by the music industry as the gramophone became increasingly present in bourgeois homes. Through these simultaneous movements, listening became constructed as a feminized practice, one that craved exotic sounds and mythologized the ‘other’ that made them. In Modernity’s Ear, Roshanak Kheshti examines the ways in which racialized and gendered sounds became fetishized and, in turn, capitalized on by an emergent American world music industry through the promotion of an economy of desire. Taking a mixed-methods approach that draws on anthropology and sound studies, Kheshti locates sound as both representative  and constitutive of culture and power. Through analyses of film, photography, recordings, and radio, as well as ethnographic fieldwork at a San Francisco-based world music company, Kheshti politicizes the feminine in the contemporary world music industry.  Deploying critical theory to read the fantasy of the feminized listener and feminized organ of the ear, Modernity’s Ear ultimately explores the importance of pleasure in constituting the listening self.

Review “In this tightly structured book, Kheshti offers not only an aesthetic and stylistic history of world music but also an analysis of race and gender in the ‘world music culture industry.’”-Choice “Engaging an impressive range of methodologies, Modernity’s Ear offers an astute look into the world music culture industry through the lens of ethnographic entrapment and phonographic subjectivity. With sharp insight, Kheshti explores the nexus between bodies and sounds at the intersection of racial and gender identities to make a crucial point about phonographic listening as an important venue for performative and philosophical reflection.”-Alexander Weheliye, author of Phonographies: Grooves in Sonic Afro-Modernity“Rich in ethnographic fieldwork, Modernity’s Ear is a thunderous unsettling of the gendered and racialized assumptions we make about sound and listening. Innovatively pushing the limits of queer studies and critical race studies, Kheshti stretches the listening ear and retunes theoretical approaches to consider not only the way race sounds but how it is configured as sensually ‘other.’  A field-changing book for queer studies and sound studies alike.”-Deborah R. Vargas, author of Dissonant Divas in Chicana Music: The Limits of La Onda

About the Author Roshanak Kheshti is Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies and affiliate faculty in the Critical Gender Studies Program at the University of California, San Diego.

A groundbreaking work that reveals how Marlon Brando shaped his legacy in art and life.

When people think about Marlon Brando, they think of the movie star, the hunk, the scandals. In Brando’s Smile, Susan L. Mizruchi reveals the Brando others have missed: the man who collected four thousand books; the man who rewrote scripts, trimming his lines to make them sharper; the man who consciously used his body and employed the objects around him to create believable characters; the man who loved Emily Dickinson’s poetry.

To write this biography, Mizruchi gained unprecedented access to a vast number of annotated books from Brando’s library, hand-edited copies of screenplays, private letters, and recorded interviews that have never before been quoted in a biography. Original interviews with some of the still-living players from Brando’s life, including Ellen Adler, his one-time girlfriend and the daughter of his acting teacher Stella Adler, provide even deeper insight into the complex person whose intelligence belied the high-school dropout.

Mizruchi shows how Brando’s embrace of foreign cultures and social outsiders led to his brilliant performances in unusual roles―a gay man, an Asian, a German soldier―to test himself and to foster empathy on a global scale. We also meet the political Brando: the civil rights activist, the close friend of James Baldwin, the actor who declined his Oscar to support Indian rights.

More than seventy stunning―and many rare―photographs of Marlon Brando illuminate this portrait of the man who has left an astounding cultural legacy.

Brando's Smile: His Life, Thought, and Work, by Susan L. Mizruchi

From Booklist *Starred Review* Professor Mizruchi cleverly plays off Brando’s beefcake image in her book’s charming cover photograph and title, but note carefully the subtitle. This is no romantic tell-all but a rich look “over his shoulder” as Brando read and wrote comments in his much-loved collection of some 4,000 books. Mizruchi chased down 53 of 57 lots of Brando’s personal library, auctioned at Christie’s after his 2004 death, and she has gone through the books, newspaper and journal articles and reviews, scripts, and more, following Brando’s reading and annotating and using his acting career as the book’s frame (basically, from I Remember Mama on through The Score, with such powerhouses as On the Waterfront and The Godfather in between). It’s a brilliant strategy, a marvelous find, and an engaging, enlightening portrait of a human, a man seen in various portrayals as a sex machine, perhaps the greatest actor ever, and, toward the end, an overweight recluse. For Brando’s performance in Mutiny on the Bounty, for instance, he had more than 100 books on Polynesia alone. Mizruchi writes frankly, smartly, and wittily and quotes others as well to “explore the Brando that was not visible to the world in order to better understand the one that was.” --Eloise Kinney

Review “Eye-opening . . . made me rethink my opinion of the actor. And rewatch his films with greater appreciation of his craft.” (Carrie Rickey - Philadelphia Inquirer)“An always interesting, addictive book (I didn’t move for two days).” (Antonia Quirke - Financial Times)“Forcefully reminds us of the actor’s guile and charm, as well as his reckless bohemian spirit. . . . [Mizruchi] has construct[ed] something that is . . . more than I imagined possible.” (Scott Eyman - Wall Street Journal)“[Mizruchi is] the first to have access to Brando’s private archives, including his extensive library, film archives and research materials… Fascinating.” (Tom Shone - Atlantic)“To understand the complete Brando…any future biographer will now have to take account of Mizruchi’s Brando as well―to somehow square the lover and the sensualist with the critical thinker.” (Julia M. Klein - Boston Globe)“Explores the Brando that was not visible to the world in order to better understand the one that was―a Brando that was independent of the public persona and often at odds with it.” (Examiner)“The most amazing restoration work on an artist’s image that I’ve ever seen.” (Greg Carpenter - Sequart Magazine)

About the Author Susan L. Mizruchi, a professor of English at Boston University, specializes in American literature, cultural history, and film.

Obsessed with him. Have read just about everything there is about him and seen his films, interviews over and over again. Susan has surprised me by educating me about my hero Marlon Brando and for that I thank her from the bottom of my heart. Great read, warm, crisp and memorable. Will now buy a hard cover of the same for my collection. more power to Susan and marlon

By Anthony Freyberg I attended the Christie's preview and sale of Marlon Brando's property in 2005 and was fortunate enough to purchase some books and a movie script. I can personally attest that every book, paperback, hardback and the script that I bought in addition to the many at the preview, had numerous notes, underlinings and other obvious indications that they had been carefully read and annotated by Brando. Like so many others, I use to believe that his incredible talent was mostly the result of instinct and imagination. It was a refreshing revelation for me to realize the amount of work and preparation he devoted throughout his life to his craft. For that I will always be indebted to Susan Mizruchi's wonderful book.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Let this be the first biography of Brando that you read..... By CL While I have read almost every biography written about Marlon Brando, I believe Brando's Smile to be the best. It delves into his childhood and early life and also each play and movie he was involved in. I have discovered many things about my favorite actor that I did not know. Many of the biographies about Brando seem more like tabloids, dishing the salacious aspects of Brando's life, whether or not these things are true, Susan L. Mizruchi has produced a biography that proves she is a skilled writer as well as an admirer of the great actor. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to know the man, and the actor, Marlon Brando.

Civilizations have mysteriously disappeared throughout human history. Today, hundreds of alien ships have come to Earth not to destroy or conquer, but with an ancient gathering technique. Denver native, Wendy Raven struggles with her parent’s death as she counts the weeks until the trial. When hundreds of alien ships land and broadcast a simple message to come home, she is shocked how fast society quickly decays into abandonment. Dr. James Steele a recently divorced astrobiologist has nothing to live for with the Raven’s murder trial hanging over his head. Then gets an opportunity of a lifetime, when he and two other scientists are enticed by the military to enter one of the ships. Wendy’s traumatized life deteriorates further at the sight of Dr. Steele on TV. His investigation leads him inside one of the idle alien ships near Washington DC. Inside the empty ship, Dr. Steele realizes they are both hospitable and his way out of the Raven’s murder trial. At a press briefing, Dr. Steele accidentally reveals his intentions to leave earth. Discarded by the military, Dr. Steele’s drive to leave, forces him on a harrowing journey across the chaotic city to board another alien ship. Blinded by retribution, Wendy spends the last few days before liftoff convincing herself she must now sacrifice her connection with planet Earth and join the calling to come home in order to chase Dr. Steele across the galaxy. Her only hope is to catch him on the other side of the journey and kill him.

Goodbye My Marigolds takes the reader on an extraordinary journey to a new old world. Dr. Steele easily decides that the risk of the unknown far outweighs facing the consequences of his actions. Wendy is determined to face her parent's killer even if it means abandoning their legacy. As the story unfolds it seems as if neither decision was easy. I enjoyed Matthew Bird's Goodbye My Marigolds and look forward to reading what happens next when the second book in the series is available!

ManningEnergize tells the story of Daniel Quinn, an ex-soldier of the Earth Star Alliance, cursed with a dark past and demons that continue to haunt him. Five years after being framed for a crime he didn't commit, he is a mercenary and captain of his own ship, partnered with humanities only artificial intelligence. Coerced into a contract he doesn't really want to take, he is forced to make choices that effect not only his future, but the future of a newly discovered planet and the species that inhabit it.The story is solid and told from the first person perspective, with an easy flow and style that brings the characters and settings to life. Characters are fun and believable and the aliens, though humanoid in actions and emotions, are well thought out with a culture and language all of their own. Actions make sense, and there are no leaps of logic or convenient pieces of technology that often plague science fiction tales like this. All in all, it is an excellent read and well worth the time I took to read it. I am looking forward to book 2 (Antagonize I think due for November 2013) and will pick it up as soon as it is available.A good, solid 4* book.Scoring system5 - excellent4 - above average3 - average2 - below average1 - poor

First Contact will never be the same again.Energizer is a first person narrative that is at times electric, sorrowful, inventive, astonishing, and ultimately totally unpredictable and original. I love Mr. Manning's writing style. The use of first person puts you firmly in Daniel's head and you are there for the duration of the book, experiencing every nuance with him.The author's voice rings clear and true. His writing is wonderfully descriptive. He draws his scenes and characters in Technicolor. The space Daniel inhabits is tangible. The joy and pain he feels lifts your spirit or makes you cry.By the time I reached the end of this book I felt as though Daniel and I were old friends. The conclusion was satisfying, and yet, we are given the hope that Mr. Manning will revisit Daniel so we might follow him into another thrilling episode.

Manning unleashes a strong debut novel with Energize !I loved the growth and beginnings of the Daniel Quinn universe and mythology, including the magical, Panacea-type energy source known as Empyreus. Realistic, rich characters, with all their strengths and weaknesses, have you both cheering them on and cursing them under your breath at the same time!If Manning's next novel shapes up to be anywhere near as good as Energize (and I fully believe that it can only get better from here), then we are in for an awesome sequel filled with action and excitement!

The writing is beautiful and striking and shows a different perspective of the story of Persephone in a way that makes her the victor of her fate. I think it's beautiful.
