The Silver Liner: Takes Flight, by Daniel Sullivan

From the Author While not the first novel I've written, The Silver Liner: Takes Flight! was the first novel I've published, and as such it holds a very special place for me. It was the first book that went through all of the beta reading, editorial evaluation, and editing process. Watching the characters' stories unfold as I wrote this book (yes, the characters really do act as they wish and go where they will) was the most rewarding part of writing this book, and the story ended up in places that I had not originally intended it to.I truly enjoyed writing this novel, and I still enjoy reading it when I go back to it.

About the Author Daniel Sullivan hails from what was once rural Maryland, and after moving away in 1993, he returned to his roots to raise his two sons in 2002, where he has taught kendo for the past seven years. His first book, "The Silver Liner: Takes Flight!" was self published in 2015, and was republished by Wolf Paw Publications in 2016.Daniel is a avid motorcyclist, and when he's not working on his next novel, you'll find him roaring around Maryland on his Harley Davidson.

Daniel Sullivan takes the reader on a fantastic ride through space. The prologue, though brief, brings the reader into the story immediately. The story entertains with a space race challenge, and a star ship chase. The characters are well thought out and described, and at times, the story has one on the edge of their seat, waiting for the next fantastic scene! The ship itself is exquisite and interesting - I wish I could go for a cruise on her. Before you know it, you'll consider Captain Kendrick Royce, Fiona, security officer Mun, engineer Heather, and Father Ronan as members of your own quirky family. I'm looking for more in this fine series about The Silver Liner

Hoping to keep this spoiler-free, so some parts will be intentionally vague.I saw that this is the author's first book and my understanding is that it's self-published. The description awakened my interest as a sci-fi fan, specifically my fondness for Farscape and Firefly. The story itself is excellent and very original. I started the prologue and I just wanted to keep going. I wanted to see what would happen next and where each of the plot lines were going. That is worth its weight in gold for any novel.I also felt the writing was pretty solid and this author definitely knows what he's doing. The story is paced well and has a clear progression. The prose is a little "stiff" but that's just a matter of practice; many of my favorite authors started similarly. I did notice a few forgivable typos, and on occasion there was a funny sort of "skip" where I felt like a sentence or two explaining something was missing. I also noted a few times where something that was already fairly obvious by implication was stated outright. But these are rare occurrences and none greatly impacted the story telling.Worth mentioning is our main protagonist, Kendrick Royce. He's a very cool character and within a few pages the inspiration for his mannerisms and appearance should be obvious. I won't spoil it but I was really amused. I did however feel Royce is a little "too perfect." He's extremely talented at many things (sometimes stretching plausibility), is a good-guy to the bone, and has few if any flaws. This isn't a deal breaker to be fair, as many of John Wayne's characters were like this, or if you want one from a modern literary work, characters like Atticus O'Sullivan from IDC. Where it started to get irritating was all the times that it was overtly pointed out how great he is, including the narration, thoughts or statements of admiration from other characters, and occasionally Royce himself. Even his enemies seem to remark how cool they think he is. I would roll my eyes when this happened and think "Yes yes yes Royce is awesome. Can we get on with the story?"I was pleasantly surprised to see that this is a sci-fi work that breaks a lot of those annoying tropes of the genre. The spaceships are extremely fast, but not faster-than-light; it still takes months to fly from Earth to Mars, and most of the numbers really do add up correctly. Artificial gravity is only present in spinning systems in ships and stations, so space travelers have to deal with being weightless most of the time, and on the moon you still have low gravity even inside bases. Also interesting is the Earth is not one world government. Many nations we all know are still in existence and have retained much of their culture. All in all, I think this is a great start as a novel. It could use some tighter editing but it has built an interesting and rich universe to play in should this end up being a series.

Well written, fast-paced, a thoroughly thought out plot and a fun-to-read, thrilling novel. To me, the amount of detail and character development was spot-on - enough to engage me but not so much as to bore, and leaving just the right amount to my imagination. In his first effort, Mr. Sullivan takes a risk by adding an unexpected element to several characters' personalities; this element is particularly rare in science fiction, which I found refreshing. The way he combines intrigue, action, and sexual tension while keeping the plot cohesive, unpredictable, and smoothly moving forward to the conclusion of the story is skillful. Nice job, Mr. Sullivan!
