By Pat Patterson While it gets along without it, the Author's Notes at the end of the book, which explain the world, should really go to the very beginning. It will explain a great deal of what is going on, without harming the story at all.I have been told that any book that is not immediately captivating in the first pages has zero chance of getting a contract in the world of traditional publishing, That is ANOTHER reason for us to be grateful for indie publishing. Ranger Ask Not has some minor, almost cosmetic flaws, but check this out:FANTASTIC world building. The societies on what used to be the North American Plains are described through action, and the conflicts are those which arise naturally. The inclusion of shape-shifters and were-wolves is an added benefit.GREAT characters. Heroes, villains, and hangers on are all portrayed with sympathy and respect. Nobody is tossed out there as a one-dimensional crowd-filler.GREAT plot. We know something is going to happen, and it does, with frequency. As an added bonus, Angus liberally sprinkles in passages which draw on his own experience with edged weapons. It makes a difference. And promises of sequels to come. I want sequels. Lots of sequels. So, with all that going for it, why is this a 4 star rating, and not a 5 star? One word: commas.I am NOT about to beat this great book and new author with a hammer. However, there is a big difference between "We've come to eat, Grandma!" and "We've come to eat Grandma!"Nuff said. So, pull up yer big kid pants, and give this book the treatment it deserves. The art part needs no improvement; the editing is easy to fix.

There was the lack of commas, and also the author uses the name of a character not in the scene in reference to the character speaking or being spoken to once or twice. Beyond that, the story is great. The action is heavy. The use of weapons and amour is described with more realism than you'll find in a lot of other places. The characters are interesting and well done. The setting is a nice blend of classic Western with a hint of feudal European. All in all, I'd suggest taking a chance on this book.
