The concept is that you have a human who is touched and religious with a group of supernaturals who are given this job as a punishment. Each has a unique gift but those are not the talents they are using. The vampire is the leader whereas normally he is a soldier, the djinn who needs a serious 12 step program is the tithe collector and in love with the vampire’s brother, the faerie is the investigator and usually she is the killer whereas the religious human is the one who is set to kill.A jumble of emotions are amongst all the characters as they are there to do their time and move on but along the way they start to care for each other and become friends. This group which is as unlikely to form a unit as possible due to their selfish ways and not trusting anyone come together and form in their own way a family as they investigate the stealing of magic in Miami and the consequences of what they find out are huge. Each character brings a different flavor and background to the story with each strugglng in different ways. The faerie with trust and love issues, the djinn with addiction and loving someone who is bad for you. She also feels guilt and like she is not worthy of existing, this team begins to have her see she is more than she thinks, the vampire with self confidence and belief in self and the human is still trying to find himself in this new world. Together they form bonds of trust and friendship even if they don’t think so as they help each other solve the problem that is going on in Miami and what they see is trouble in the biggest form. The story is one that captures you and entertains you. This is for a mature audience though so even though the plot is one for all ages the erotic undertones and sexual scenes are not.A story of finding oneself, people to trust and friendships with them while solving a serious crime and seeing that there is more to meets the eye in their punishment and what is going on in the magic world as you wonder what this group will run into next and if the vampire will actually find himself going against the vampiric nature and staying with the man he is bound to as part of his punishment.

Pretty good good Impressions By Danielle Pros: Well thought out characters, story was strongCons: Needs more back storyOverall rating: Pretty good goodImpressions: Heavy on the sex, heavy on the magic, good story but back story was lacking.Review:I should point out that I don't normally read books that are this heavy on the erotica. I wanted to give this book a chance, since it is out of my normal reading genres. I am glad that I did. It was a very good book.So let's get this started. First, I want to talk about what I think the book needs. It needs more back story. We get many points of view but we don't get too much about each. I want to be able to get into my characters. I want to relate to them, understand where they are coming from. I know that we get bits and pieces, but I wanted more from the past. We have Zahra, the Djinn, and we get some idea of what is going on, but I feel like I couldn't relate to her because I just don't know what makes her tick. It was the same with the other characters as well. We needed more then we got on each of them.I think that the idea of the story was great. You have these paranormal creatures all shoved together because they have pissed off the leaders of the groups they are a part of. This means they have to work together to get back into the good graces of their leaders. So you get this group working in the human world to get to the bottom of this over abundance of magic use. It worked.I will say that if you are not into heavy erotica and sex scenes, you need to pass this one by. I can handle some sex in books, I do read romance, but this is very heavy on it and if you aren't used to it you will be overloaded and probably overwhelmed.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. but I will say I loved this one By Maghon Thomas I haven't read the first book of this series, but I will say I loved this one. It was so much fun. A human, who finds out that her one night stand baby daddy is a paranormal, and almost everyone she knows is one too, makes her world come apart. It's a fun filled, suspenseful little adventure that was a blast to read. When Bennett and Linc's best friends get married, they are in the wedding, and though they shouldn't, they just couldn't keep their hands off each other, so a very sexy night turns into the biggest crazy of all. Bennett has to figure out what she's going to do with a baby by a man who will want nothing to do with her. But she is mistaken. Bennett is a very independent, strong willed woman. Sometimes to a fault. Linc is a very sexy fashion tycoon. He's also a werewolf. And now, things are changing, especially when Bennett finds out all her life, her mother kept some very dangerous things from her, like who her father was. This story had a great romance, some not so happy moments, and a wonderful way of learning who you are, and what love can do for you. Plus this one is hilarious with Bennett being a little crazy and Linc being all possessive. And I must say, way to be adults about stepping up for an unplanned pregnancy. The writing was very good, making this one a light and easy read with a happily every after and some fun in the process. I would love to see more of these characters in the future, especially with the baby and how they are coming around. With that said, some good fun was had and I look forward to more :) 4.5 PAWS!!

Nicholson "Seeking the Veil, Part 2"" is the next book in the 'A Hammerblood Story', by author Clifton Hill. This Kindle e-book was approximately 76 printed pages and sold for $0.95 at time of writing this review. Please Note: I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.General Theme (minor spoilers)Part 2 continues to follow Hestea and his fellow mercenaries led by the brusque yet amiable Orangebeard. Unable to explain to himself or others, nor demonstrate the seemly magical powers that saved the day during the last encounter, Hestea goes from celebrity to lowly 'cookboy' again within a short span of time. Meanwhile the group eventually arrive at Hald's Pass, an area that features terrain prime for the unexpected. Some thoughts on "Seeking the Veil" Part 2...1.) well written in an engaging style that was easy to read and understand. I always had the feeling of wanting to read one more page; just one more chapter.2.) there was further character development; by the end of this book I felt comfortable with most of the main players.3.) there were several intriguing encounters, graphically described.4.) the sense of pace and timing fit nicely with the balance between action and drama.5.) important figures can be severely injured or killed. Adding a sense of realism to this tale.6.) map(s)... none. The group was constantly on the move. It needs a map! 1/2 Star loss.Impressions:An enjoyable second book that follows the trials and tribulations of our young hero, Hestea. All characters continue to slowly but steadily develop, making them easier to like and identify with.An intriguing tale, well told. I look forward to Part 3.As it is... 4 1/2 StarsRay Nicholsonraynicholsonsreviews@hotmail.com@ralannicholson

A Gripping Tale By Susan Seeking the Veil, Part 2, picks up where Part 1 leaves off.Hestea is trying to figure out how to bring back the white veil that occurred when he killed many of the Saeordin. Unfortunately, he has no idea how it happened. He continues training with his friends, learning how to fight. The band marches to village, and discovers the village has been destroyed. They march again, and arrive at another village. There, they battle the Saeordin again. And this time Hestea experiences the white veil again. The characters are believable, the story is gripping. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read Part 3.

It really jumps into the story and is packed with all kinds of action. I also had a few good laughs as I read through the chapters and other times I felt remorse. My kids are still reading it so I won't spoil the ending for now but I will say that it is truly an unfortunate surprise! I hope there will be another book.

Pretty Cool By Dr_Shoes This book was pretty cool - Though my judgment might be a little clouded as I LOVE dragons and elves.Unfortunately there was only one REAL dragon in the story, but I suppose that was all it needed...Story flowed OK, but what really captured my interest was the new spin on the whole medieval thing. The book left room for a sequel (of course). Hopefully more Dragons will be in that one?

Highly inventive and lots of exciting, clever twists. Some fantasy books are formulaic, but this one is an outside-the-box book that makes you want to keep reading to find out what will happen and because you're invested in the characters.

The engaging, passionate, always-honest, and often-hilarious memoir of actor Ron Perlman—his triumphant story of perseverance and determination navigating the slippery slopes of Hollywood, with a foreword by Guillermo del ToroRon Perlman was a kid who had a myriad of self-image issues, yet he triumphed in an industry that trades on image and self-confidence. He landed a leading role in Quest for Fire, won a Golden Globe for Beauty and the Beast, and played the title role in two Hellboy movies, becoming along the way an icon among sci-fi and comic book fans worldwide. In Easy Street (the Hard Way), Ron shares his life story, starting with his up-by-your-bootstraps background in New York's Washington Heights. He sheds light on his life as a working actor; offers behind-the-scenes insight into the working styles of directors, including Jean-Jacques Annaud, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy and the Academy Award-winning Pan's Labyrinth); and provides a peek into Hollywood, where he's encountered Marlon Brando, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., and others. He also turns his eye on the trajectory of American culture—the good and the bad—as observed by a man who started out in a mom-and-pop world where the arts were disseminated by individuals rather than corporations.Ron's memoir will inspire anyone who has ever dared to dream and offers a roadmap to the next generation of dreamers.

Easy Street (the Hard Way): A Memoir, by Ron Perlman

Review Praise for Easy Street (the Hard Way)"Reading Easy Street (the Hard Way) is like breaking into your uncle's stash of his best booze and cigars. Ron stands up like the Statue of Liberty. Inspiring, towering, reassuring, beautiful, intimidating, and should charge more for tours. Easy Street is one part odyssey of an artist, one part handbook for manhood, and one part love letter to acting that chronicles the struggle through the gauntlet of a life steered by creativity. If you don't like this book, you don't like ice cream."—Ryan Gosling"I knew that Ron Perlman was a wonderful actor and also a man of great passion and appetite. What I didn't know was the muthafucka could write! Easy Street (the Hard Way) is a deeply human memoir filled with hilarious show biz stories as we see Ron awaken to the beautiful man he is, inside and out."—Dana Delany"A face that's unmistakable, a career that's indisputable, and a charm that's irresistible. Ron's story, and the way he tells it, makes this read truly one of a kind."—Marc Forster, director of World War Z, The Kite Runner, and Monster's Ball"Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, always entertaining, Ron Perlman's Easy Street is a lot like his performances—brazenly honest and full of surprises. This is why you can't take your eyes off the man when he's on screen, and you can't put this book down once you start reading."—Ben Watkins, writer and producer, Hand of God and Burn NoticeKirkus Reviews, 8/1/14“The cult favorite looks back. Perlman, the veteran character actor perhaps best known for his starring roles in TV's Sons of Anarchy and the Hellboy film franchise, recounts his life and career in an engagingly off-the-cuff manner…The actor’s voice, full of casual profanity, vintage hipster slang and an endearing tendency to overreach with elevated vocabulary, is as distinctive as his craggy features and imposing screen presence. He’s good company on the page.”USA Weekend, 9/28/14 “[A] a must-read memoir… an insightful look at his 35-year journey to stardom”TechGuru, 9/25/14“We’re dying to read it.”Washington Post, 10/5/14“Disarmingly candid memoir.”Buffalo News, 10/16/2014“Perlman brings such full-on personality to his work that it’s no surprise to see him put pen to paper. And the resulting memoir, Easy Street (The Hard Way) is appropriately colorful… a brisk, enjoyable read for ‘Sons of Anarchy’ fans, ‘Hellboy’ obsessives, and, most of all, Marlon maniacs.”Total Film“The actor’s passionate, profane, wildly entertaining biography pulls no punches…Perlman’s greatest gift is his candour.”

About the Author Ron Perlman is best-known for his titular role in the Hellboy movies and his long run on the TV series Sons of Anarchy, as well as scores of other iconic performances, including The Name of the Rose, City of Lost Children, and Pacific Rim. He won a Golden Globe for his role in Beauty and the Beast and is a star and executive producer of the Amazon series Hand of God. With the bustling neighborhoods of New York City as the backdrop, Ron Perlman narrates with gusto, depth and heartfelt emotions what it was like to walk in the shoes of a grass green actor in a profession by turns exhilarating and soul crushing.I enjoyed the down to earth tone, the easy voice, the openness of the actor starting on a promising and terrifying journey. With a keen insight into human nature, spot-on impressions, and his wonderful trade mark humor he carries us along as he alternately succeeds and fails. It's hard for us to imagine this giant of Thespianism ever foundering, running aground. Yet he has done just that, time and time again. His family's, especially his father's belief in him kept his afloat through some very, very hard times.Actor/writer/raconteur/philosopher/wag, and above all, orator. Touched and moved to laughter by the paper version, I was so much more so by the audio version: his voice moves the story with such wit, verve, spirit and sadness and potency. It transcends the written word, soars above what makes an autobiography readable, interesting, compelling. His articulation takes raw precious stones and hones them into museum quality cuts. If you haven't purchased the audio version, do so. It is superb. He is honest in feeling and idea. He shares the ambiguities and uncertainties that reflect upon his occupational interactions and personal life alike. On the whole, I think the reader/listener comes away with the sense that like all of us, the author is on a continuous search for self knowledge and personal satisfaction. I'm not sure his optimism is genuine but it certainly sounds as if he, Ron Perlman, would like it to be. He refuses to give in to what others would deem inevitable. With what seems to be naive optimism and bullish, fanciful daydreaming he has lifted his life from the narrow streets of the crowded city to the milky way: the sweeping arch of stars which shines down upon the dark earth below. He has a genius for achievement, a wild passion for accomplishment. He wants life to have meaning, sense, balance, justice. In the face of a world with so much of the opposite, it is inspiring that he won't give up trying. I would suggest this is the book's theme: just keep on reaching. We, the readers/listeners invest totally, cheering him on, hoping with him, believing in miracles. This book is a gift, a secret, he has happily shared: I AM. And don't let anyone take that away from you.

By Maria we've seen the actor, his characters have been larger than life, some we've loved some we've hated (so good is his acting) but now it's time to take a look at the man.I read this book within 48 hours, stayed up all night until I finished it. So deeply was I absorbed that I didn't noticed that time had passed!!Not sure where to start. I was totally fascinated by the people Ron has met & the stories that go with it.I was pulled in by how raw and honest his battles have been , on a human level I get that! He's had the strength of character to pull through & has achieved what many of us can only dream of. There's nothing like taking a peek into someone elses life to realize that we are all fighting the same battles, we all want that same things. What defines us is how we handle the battles that we face, what Ron shows us is that the lows can be overcome & replaced with hope.Ron's journey is heartwarming , funny, thought provoking, inspirational & even had me questioning my own path in life.Life's knocks as well as his successes has made him the man he is today, a man of integrity, loyal, honest, compassionate, he speaks up for the little people & is not afraid to stand up for injustices. To say this book will have you feeling many emotions is an understatement. Easy street stands proudly on my bookshelf but not for long as I'll read it again and again.I feel that no matter what I say I can not do this book justice! Reviews are all well & good but there is nothing like reading a book yourself especially one that takes you on an amazing ride & this book certainly does that. Happy reading!!

From the opening sentence of the book I was hooked and kept reading until I jarred myself awake from it (the book) hitting me on the forehead. Easy Street is a great example of how much adversity a single person can handle and not completely collapse and wither away.... as we know from the history books, Ron keeps going like a jacked up version of the energizer bunny, and doesn't stop until he gets what he wants. This book taught me why it's important to NEVER give up.What to expect:The book has several great stories about Ron's personal experiences with Frank Sintatra, Sammy David Jr., Marlon Brando, Sean Connery and also a great account of working with Linda Hamilton on Beauty and the Beast. I love reading these kinds of behind the scenes stories, found myself laughing out loud several times when he talks about working with Brando. I really wasn't expecting Ron to be this funny.Cussing? Yes there are some F-bombs swimming around the book (let me know if you can spot the sentence where he uses it twice in the same sentence!) but I really wasn't all that shocked or surprised. People always say to write like you talk and Ron seems like the kinda guy who can get pretty creative with profanity. I can get why it might bother some people but I got exactly what I expected when I got this book: a real mothafuckin' slice of Ron Perlman. Two thumbs up!

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: NPR, Slate, Publishers Weekly, Goodreads

Following the success of The Accidental Billionaires and Moneyball comes Console Wars—a mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry.

In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about videogames and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo.

The battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.

Based on over two hundred interviews with former Sega and Nintendo employees, Console Wars is the underdog tale of how Kalinske miraculously turned an industry punchline into a market leader. It’s the story of how a humble family man, with an extraordinary imagination and a gift for turning problems into competitive advantages, inspired a team of underdogs to slay a giant and, as a result, birth a $60 billion dollar industry.

Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation, by Blake J. Harris

Amazon.com Review Ben Mezrich Ben Mezrich, bestselling author of Bringing Down the House and Straight Flush, Reviews Console Wars

OK, full disclosure: I spent most of my twenties obsessed with GoldenEye on the Nintendo 64; I’ve got enough old videogame cartridges to build a medium-sized cartridge castle in my living room; and I’ve spent hours arguing the relative merits of Playstation versus Xbox. But Console Wars had me hooked from the first page. Written as narrative nonfiction, the story zings along at a breakneck pace. Compiling a massive amount of research into a well-executed dramatic arc, Harris tells the David vs. Goliath story of Sega’s epic battle against the gaming behemoth Nintendo. I especially enjoyed reading about the development of Sega’s mascot – and would-be Mario-killer – Sonic, the frenetic, frenzied little hedgehog that eventually shifted the balance between the two companies, changed the gaming landscape forever. The character of Tom Kalinske, the brilliant business guru (who’d resurrected Barbie, turning a back-of-the-closet, anachronistic doll into a contemporary, billion-dollar phenomenon) tapped to transform Sega from a small-scale Japanese arcade game outfit into a global competitor, is deftly drawn; from the very beginning, he faces a herculean task, not the least of which is his need to bridge the cultural chasm between American consumers and Japanese managers. Infighting, corporate greed, scrappy genius vs. antiquated business models – Console Wars has it all. A thoroughly good read!

From Booklist *Starred Review* At the dawn of the 1990s, Nintendo was the Goliath of the video-game industry. The company’s strictures on third-party development and its policy of understocking retailers contributed to the stranglehold on the market. But Tom Kalinske, who had rejuvenated Barbie and created He-Man for Mattel, was about to change that as the president and CEO of Sega. Like the pixels that together create a larger picture, Harris presents the various elements of the business in vivid color, from research and development to marketing, to show how Sega went from a joke to a market leader in just a few years. Along the way, Harris reveals the forces behind such decisions as Nintendo changing red blood to gray sweat in Mortal Kombat; the origin story of the nickname for Sonic’s sidekick, Tails; and even how Mario was supposed to be a certain spinach-guzzling sailor, in a manner that will engage both Gen X gamers and business-minded readers. Harris defines the players immediately, honing in on their most notable characteristics, and puts the reader in the thick of the meetings and deal-making with a confidence stemming from hundreds of interviews. Pegged for both documentary and feature-film adaptations, Console Wars is remarkably detailed and fast paced, pitting speedy Sonic against more-of-the-same Mario in a blow-by-blow account of the battle for supremacy in the burgeoning video-game industry. --Bridget Thoreson

Review A riveting story full of colorful characters… a fascinating, illuminating history… an essential read. (Publishers Weekly (starred review))A highly entertaining behind-the-scenes thriller. (Kirkus)It’s far and away one of the best non-fiction books I’ve ever read. (Forbes)Like the pixels that together create a larger picture, Harris presents the various elements of the business in vivid color...remarkably detailed and fast paced. (Booklist)Fast, fluid, and startingly accessible. (Entertainment Weekly)A fast-paced page-turner...it’s exciting to finally get a no-holds-barred account of a history that has largely been kept secret from the public eye. (Wired)A must-read. Period. Fascinating information and absolutely worth reading; however, the authorial presence is far too strong By Spotless Mind Console Wars largely chronicles the period between 1989 and 1995, when Sega battled Nintendo for dominance in the home console market, ending as Sony displaces Sega in the 32-bit era as Nintendo's main competitor. In a sense, it does serve as a sort of sequel to David Sheff's gold-standard account in "Game Over" of the rise of Nintendo in the 80's, which left off at the point where Sega's Genesis had just started to get a serious foothold in the market. However, the styles in which the two authors approach their subjects are very different, and it's interesting to compare them.Sheff's Game Over contained very little conversational dialogue. He wrote his book like a reporter: documenting scenes and incidents by describing the people and particulars involved, the content of what they said, and the effect of their interactions. His book was full of individual quotes, but the large majority of them were presented matter-of-factly as accounts made by the subject either directly to the author in interview, or to another source of record which Sheff was citing. In-scene "dialogue" was used sparingly, and mostly limited to short lines that reflected exactly what was known by the subject or other observers to have been said, or something very close to it. This gave Sheff's book a journalistic crackle, keeping the pace moving, the flow of information constant, and the level of authorial distance removed enough that the reader always maintained a panoramic view of the bigger picture, and didn't get bogged down in superfluous, artificial detail. In contrast, Harris's book is written like a screenplay, with full "scenes" that progress via elaborate, lengthy dialogues between "characters", while novel-esque, detailed stage directions record their precise movements and interior thoughts, all of which can only have been manufactured by the author (as he himself loosely admits in his author's note) based on the factual framework of an interaction that did occur. Where Game Over was a documentary, this book is much more a historical re-enactment. It's obvious that Harris already had a film in mind when he was writing, and the cinematically styled sharp, pithy dialogue (or at least, attempts at such), and conversational set-ups and payoffs were designed to translate easily to the eventual film. This may make the book more engaging than Sheff's reserved style for some, but I found it distracting and a little gratuitous. Irrelevant detail often gets in the way of what's interesting and entertaining about the information. That said, the information and voluminous research this book does contain is incredibly valuable, and makes for a truly rewarding read. The saga of the Sega and Nintendo battle in the US is as fascinating and provoking as any story the business world has to offer, and there's more than a little tragedy in seeing how Tom Kalinske and Sega of America were able to achieve a brilliant and improbable success, only to be cut off at their knees, in the end, by Sega of Japan. The often clumsily overwritten "reconstructed" dialogue by Harris makes me doubt I'd be interested in any fiction of his, but this particular subject matter is rich enough that my issue with his authorial indulgences is just a quibble. This is by all means a book worth reading.

Brown I enjoyed the book overall, but was disappointed the book focused entirely on marketing and sales and basically ignored engineering and software development. There are occasional allusions to technology (16 bits vs. 8 bits, Nintendo's mode 7, Sega's Blast Processing, etc.) but basically this book implies the console wars were won and lost by the sales and marketing teams of Nintendo and Sega. The book is also very focused on the Sega Genesis and the NES/SNES. Very little is written on the Sega Saturn and its commercial failuree.I understand the best engineering doesn't always win (Betamax), but the exclusive focus on marketing and sales seems unbalanced and superficial. I was hoping for a more balanced treatment of the subject including more details on the technical innovations in each generation of the console hardware and the incredible creativity and technical accomplishments of the game developers of this era. Instead, we are treated to stories of marketing and sales staff arguing over first-class airplane seats.

I am sure that there is a really great story to be told about the battle between Sega and Nintendo for console supremacy in the early '90s, and I was intrigued early on by the characters that were presented and the trip down memory lane to a very different time in pop culture. As I got deeper into the book, however, Harris's writing style started to grate...then irritate...then flat-out infuriate. And I felt a bit misled. This book isn't about games at all, really; it's about marketing. Things like Sega's false trumpeting of Blast Processing are hailed as genius despite the fact that they were duplicitous, for example - I mean, yay for lying, I guess? And other reviewers are right about the lionization of Tom Kalinske and his team. At one point, near the end of a chapter when Kalinske finds out the government is going to start investigating the games industry, the author - without, as far as I can tell, a hint of irony - compares SOA's CEO positively with the mythical figure Prometheus, who stole fire from the gods to help humanity advance and was eternally punished for it by having a buzzard eat his magically-regenerating liver every day for all time. Hyperbole, much? Ugh, and don't even get me started on the grammatical errors. There are interrogative sentences that end in periods. There are split infinitives everywhere. Poor structure abounds. I am sure book editing is hard, but some of these problems are really surprising in something that was professionally published.Overall, while I was intrigued by the tale the book was trying to tell (I was a teenager and college student in this era and am very much a part of the generation that played an active part in this whole first console war), I can't get behind a package as shoddily put together as this. Hopefully, someone will come along some day and do a better job of it.

I am a science fiction fan but I believe people who are not sci fi fans probably would like it. It got a bit too technical for me in a couple of places but that took nothing away from the story! The storyline is good. Some suspense and twists and humor. Ready for the next one!

By Mikey Thousands of years ago in the future, when the steel has melted and the sun has lost it's flare, a monument will stand. A monument in honor of the great Allen Yancey Taylor. Paradox gifted is a thank you later. A thank you letter to greats of before and after. A thank you letter that is so well written and appreciated that you do not write a "You're welcome" letter in response, because the "You're welcome" letter wouldnt be nearly as good as the thank you letter. When I write my grandma a thank you letter, she just sends back a ":)", because she knows she cannot compete. This is exactly Allen Rasputin Taylor's situation. It's bittersweet, because he will never have anybody attempt to match his incredible works. If a movie, staring Jennifer Lawrence, screenplay written by Quentin Tarintino, with Nicolas Cage as supporting actor, directed by Stephen Spielberg with music by anti-record recording artists Neco Case was created, it still would not be as clearly expressed in art as this written form of legendary majestyThank you Allen, thank you for showing me that robots can love. Beep bop boop beep.

Gil Evans. For Strayhorn fans, or for anyone familiar with 20th Century jazz, this book is pretty essential. If you've read Strayhorn's biography from a few years ago, this is still worth having because both the text and the many wonderful photos and other period ephemera combine into a wonderful telling of Strayhorn's life with an accent on his life in music. The size of the book and the good quality reproductions make this book special. The text of the book was put together by ten contributors and the many photos give the book much needed visual depth. The Forward is by Ramsey Lewis and the Introduction lays out the basic premise of the book. Throughout the book are sidebars labeled "Liner Notes" which give short incisive information on individual songs. This is a nicely made, well produced book--even the end papers have reproductions of some of Strayhorn's sheet music--a nice touch.Strayhorn was a giant of 20th Century music--plain and simple. His contributions to the American songbook are enormous. His arrangements of classic tunes like "Lush Life" (written when he was in high school), "Take The A'' Train", "So This Is Love", "Passion Flower", and many others are all considered standards of any singer/musician's jazz repertoire. And with the informative text along with the illustrations this book brings Strayhorn to life in a way that other books haven't.Strayhorn never received the notoriety that was his due during his life--and even after his early death he still wasn't recognized for his achievements. He wrote the first true jazz musical early on, "Fantastic Rhythm". Perhaps best known for his work with Ellington (who noticed his talent in the late 1930's), Strayhorn has only really been known to other musicians and jazz fans. With Ellington he arranged some of the best, most creative music ever for the jazz orchestra. Strayhorn eventually worked so closely with Ellington that it was difficult to determine who wrote what--which contributed to Strayhorn's lack of a public identity."Strayhorn was my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brainwaves in his head, and his in mine." Duke Ellington. But this book will hopefully shine a much needed light on Strayhorn's abilities as a writer/arranger. His work is still being performed by a new generation of of artists. A child prodigy, he did it while facing many challenges and hurdles because of that era and his race. But he persevered, worked in the civil rights movement (winning the Medal of Freedom in 1969), and went on to become one of the most important and creative people in music of the 20th Century. This book is a great look at Billy Strayhorn and no jazz fan or fans of 20th Century music should be without it. All in all a nice tribute to a master of orchestral jazz.

A "Lush" Life By SteveJ Much like his best compositions, "Strayhorn: An Illustrated Life" is a singular piece of work that the reader can return to again and again, stopping where he or she wants to simply revel in Billy Strayhorn, his life and his art, and learn something new. And books like "Strayhorn" are the reason the printed book will continue to hold an advantage over e-readers, much like vinyl has remained relevant. You can read my review in its entirety at allmusicbooksdotcom, but lingering over things as beautiful as this book is a joy, and I would guess, where once sat books on the works of Picasso, Dali or Monet, look for "Strayhorn: An Illustrated Life" on the coffee-tables of jazz connoisseurs, hipsters and book lovers near you.

By Samuel Augustus Jennings BILLY “Sweet Pea” STRAYHORNA wonderful pictorial biography celebrating the life and music of a truly wonderful man and musician. To be openly gay and flourish in an era when homosexuality was more taboo than it is today is totally incredible.Billy truly inspires me.LENA HORNE is quoted as saying openly gay composer Billy Strayhorn "is the only man I ever loved...I was just greedy for him."It amused Lena that Strayhorn had a mild crush on her husband. Robert Mackintosh, her dress designer, laughed for years at Horne's comment to [husband] Lennie HAYTON: "Oh, Daddy, let him have it!"Billy finally gets his proper due and I'm doing my best to share his amazing talent with the rest of the world starting with this Amazon book which offers a detailed look into his life and music.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. exciting and educational By Barbara Dell'Acqua Where to start? This isn’t your ordinary pirate story. Yes, it is an exciting adventure, described in vivid, colorful detail, but it is also filled with information about life on the sea and the many facets of society in the Colonies and the Caribbean, including economics and trade practices, as well as Colonial, Bahamian, and European politics, history, and everyday life during the time of Blackbeard. The book unfolds through the eyes of a young boy, Thomas, who finds himself brought aboard Blackbeard’s ship after the vessel on which he and his banker father are passengers is looted and burned. He becomes Blackbeard’s cabin boy and, showing an aptitude and enthusiasm for life at sea, he learns about all of the various tasks required to operate and maintain a pirate ship through interaction with the ship’s crew, among them the sailmaker/tailor, surgeon, navigator, quartermaster, cook, ship’s officers and ordinary deckhands. We find that Thomas is a natural leader and entrepreneur, and even enlightens Blackbeard as to what should be considered “treasure”.The reader learns much, along with Thomas, and somehow, since the plethora of information is provided in a novel way (from conversations with the many colorful characters that Thomas encounters), it is a painless and pleasant learning experience. The book was well-researched and it is apparent that the author has had hands-on experience with navigation and is well acquainted with sailing and seamanship skills himself.

It took a chapter to get "into. It, but then on it was a learning experience all the way. I learned all kinds of things about pirate life and the 18th century...

A departure for ERB, has the feel of old style writing, a decent crime/mystery story By Jadecat I am a long time Burroughs fan, mainly Tarzan and his Mars series, so when I saw this one available for free on the kindle I snapped it up as I had never heard of it before. Unbeknown to me, it is the 3rd book in the Mucker series. Well, I found that out when I was 80% through the book, and I suppose it might have made the main character, Bridge, a little more understandable. Truthfully, if I had known it was the 3rd book, I wouldn't have read it, but now that I finished it, it really didn't matter. The book starts off with a bang, but you don't have much background information, so you slowly figure out who the people are as you go along. The book is the story of Bridge, a self proclaimed tramp/hobo, who comes across different people in one night and tries to help some and tries to protect others. It involves a haunted house, gypsies, bears and a variety of criminals and country folk. It is a crime story that gets solved in the last few pages. I think the storyline occurs over a span of 2 to 3 days. The style of writing gives the book an old feel to it, but I suppose it should. Not my favorite novel of ERB's, but it is a good story and goes quickly. Short and sweet.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Definite Period Piece By David Stapleton A mystery/adventure novel that I found reminiscent of the work of Agatha Christi. I would call this a definite departure from the usual ERB fare in some ways, and in others more of the same. The style is much like everything else Burroughs wrote, however, rather than the exotic locales of Mars, Venus or the African jungle we are treated to a story from the American heartland.Bridge from the Mucker returns, making this somewhat of a sequel or spin-off. The story is predictable, but still fun to read. This is a definite period piece, from the settings to the characters to the dialog. Burroughs even gives us a gypsy. This one is just fun to read.P-)

However, this version of the book is incomplete. The previous reviewer stated the book jumped right into the action with no back story. That is because this version is missing the first several pages. I happened to have two versions on my Droid Kindle app. and accidentally switched to this version after starting the other. The other version is the complete Mucker trillogy for $0.99. Well worth the price for three very good books. If you want free, this version of the book will stand on it's own minus the back story, but if the back story is important to you, get the full version.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bad Blood by Nikki Jefford is the third novel in ... By AudioBook Reviewer Bad Blood by Nikki Jefford is the third novel in the series called Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter. This book continues the story of Aurora Sky, a young adult vampire hunter who returns home from a summer long boot camp having finally been trained to be the vampire hunter that she has already been “employed” as. After a traumatic end to the previous year which lead to a betrayal by her friends and a murder of a prominent vampire, Aurora returns home with no one she can turn to other than her vampire fighting team. As she tries to come to terms with her changing relationship with the government agency controlling her life, she must also try to make sense of her relationships and keep her family safe. On top of all that, she is finally starting college and living on her own with a roommate. As in the previous books, the concept of relating vampirism, fatal diseases, and blood types to the origin of vampirism and the method for killing vampire is one that I haven’t heard of before this series and I think it’s quite unique and interesting.Overall, I enjoyed this novel. The plot was intriguing, action-filled, and tied in seamlessly with the previous novels. As before there is a lot of focus on how the relationships between the characters change. I thought it was well done here. The vampire hunting action was exciting and it was well intertwined with how Aurora’s relationships changed. I really like the unfolding plot-line and was not expecting all of the information that was revealed in this novel. It is intriguing and made me want to know more. The one thing that really bothered me throughout the novel was that for the most part I personally found the relationship between Aurora and her fellow vampire hunters to be frustrating. While there are hints at the other hunters/informants as having more depth, their behavior and Aurora’s flat interactions with them seems to indicate otherwise. Noel and Fane seem to be better defined. This novel was able to incite a lot of different emotions from me through the behavior of the characters, which is a good trait for a story to have. The narration by Em Eldridge was good. While I’ve been finding Aurora’s voice a little whiny, and one of the hunters, Valerie’s voice, made me want to throttle her (which, I suppose might be the point), but in general the voicing for the characters was great. The production quality was good. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes young adult fiction and vampire stories.Audiobook provided for review by the author. Please find this complete review and many others at my review blog[If this review helped, please press YES. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bad Blood (Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter #3) by Nikki Jefford By Diane Lynch 4 ½ of 5 StarsBad Blood takes place six months after Northern Bites when Aurora returns from boot camp.Aurora’s character changed a lot over that time, she has been toughened up. She’s not the only one that changed: her mom and Noel also made a considerable transformation. It was interesting seeing Valerie and Aurora hanging out so much. They actually seemed to occasionally like each other. It was almost as if they were becoming friends.Speaking of friends, Aurora and Dante's relationship becomes fascinating. Dante wanting a relationship with Aurora, the boy clearly has it bad for her. I love that he helped out her mom and grandma while she was at boot camp. Of course, Fane is still in the picture so it complicates things.I love Dante’s dog, Tommy. What Melcher did really ticked me off, anyone who messes with an innocent animal is not someone I trust or have respect for.Bad Blood has a great plot with a ton of stuff going on. The blood tasting parties are an interesting case. Plus, things are not finished with Jared and Giselle. They have cases to solve and personal missions to resolve. The ending left me wanting to start the next book immediately. Good thing for me, I had it.Complimentary copy provided by author/publisher in exchange for an honest

Novellas #2 (formerly Three More Novellas) is the second of a series of books that tell more than one hundred unrelated stories about people in challenging situations. Adventure Vacation is the story of two couples who commit to a vacation where they are intentionally marooned on an uninhabited island for a week. Things go very wrong, forcing them to attempt to survive a real experience of being marooned. When the Fighting Stopped is based on the true story of the famous unauthorized Christmas Truce that happened during World War One. The tale tells of two characters who are enemies, who suffer from the same emotional aftermath of the war. This commonality between them is the basis upon which they become friends. The Hero of Hometon is the story of a young man that completes the 300 year old quest of another, for the benefit of a small town’s inhabitants.

They actually plan to spend it playing cards. Not happening. When the Fighting Stopped - We've all heard the stories from WWI about when they sang "Silent Night" on the front lines and gave each other gifts and played soccer. I always loved hearing about that and thought it sounded rather magical. The Hero of Hometon - What one man does, that really does not seem like very much to him. It has an everlasting effect on a whole town across the ocean.Pretty heartwarming stories. I'm hooked.
