A Witty and Charming Adventure By Meanwhile, Melinda Spencer and Radcliffe are two witty and Charming rogues and con men operating in a fictional town in approximately the 18th century. The story begins at a society ball where it is the hostess' birthday. In amongst the nobles are a number of assassins, criminals and con men. Some are targeting the hostess for death by poisoning. Our two rogues are cruising the party, pretending to be nobles and looking for opportunities to take a few choice pieces to liquidate into cash.Meanwhile, in the basement, anarchists are loading up an ironclad with gunpowder to take over the government.Much action ensues including sword fights, gun fights, huge explosions, assassinations, a duel and the arrival of an airship.With so many clearly dangerous people trying to kill our charming scoundrels, the likelihood of the actually living through the story idealism to none. While I genuinely enjoyed reading this novella, because the style of the prose, the wit of the characters and the tone of the piece, it was just too over the top. Either they needed to be more deadly dangerous, or they need to have fewer enemies that specialize in killing. This is why it got three stars instead of four. This piece did reminded me of some of the forces of the 18th century. It is well written and entertaining. If you want to take a witty, charming, swashbuckling swing through a variant of the 1700's, then give it a read.

The story was fun, crazy, and almost unexplainable. Despite being thrown into a fully developed world with a myriad of zany characters, it's extremely clear the alliegences and goals of most of the characters.Biggest critique was that the explosion felt a lot smaller than it was made out to be. Even with the explanation, it seems like it should have done a bit more to our dashing protagonists than just shake them up a little.However, this book was a fabulous quick read and I would love to continue following along with The Extraordinary Adventures of Spencer and Radcliffe.

About the Author

Roman V. Yampolskiy holds a PhD from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University at Buffalo (Buffalo, NY). There, he was a recipient of a four-year National Science Foundation (NSF) Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) fellowship. Before beginning his doctoral studies, Dr. Yampolskiy received a BS/MS (High Honors) combined degree in computer science from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York State.

Dr. Yampolskiy’s main areas of interest are behavioral biometrics, digital forensics, pattern recognition, genetic algorithms, neural networks, artificial intelligence, and games. Dr. Yampolskiy is an author of over 100 publications, including multiple journal articles and books. His research has been cited by numerous scientists and profiled in popular magazines, both American and foreign (New Scientist, Poker Magazine, Science World Magazine), dozens of websites (BBC, MSNBC, Yahoo! News), and on radio (German National Radio, Alex Jones Show).

By Amazon Customer This book reviews the difficulties of securing safe AGI. Overall, I think the greatest service it provides is to show future generations where others have already looked, and failed. And in this regard this book was tremendous.I also appreciated the comprehensive references on every page, which really lets someone new to the field get caught up rather quickly. I also loved how this books tries to bring more computer scientists into the conversation.My only critique is how the author's personal fears sometimes leak into the main text. While editorial views are common place in most books, I thought it felt out of place in this otherwise scholarly work.

The book has very throughtful proposals in specific areas and essentially clarifies some muddy concepts in AI. A must have for AI researcher.

There are 4 elements that allow us to get to the meaning of the play or shaping a life: shape, action, transaction and surrender. Each action builds on the last until the character gets or does not the desired outcome. You can use these elements scene by scene until you know where, how, and what goal your character will achieve. The book has a great historical section on theatre through the ages. Aristotle had important things to say about theatre, who knew or remembered. Zinn uses 4 plays to explain his idea. "Death of a Salesman" is one very interesting example. He did not leave out Shakespeare. "Hamlet" is used example of surrender in classical theatre. I hope alot of people read this book. It is a great tool for structuring your work in theatre. But as the subtitle says, it can give one clues on how to be the star of your life. The subtitle is "Life and Death Onstage and Off".

The existential ideas in this book will occupy your mind for a long time--and I find myself thinking about Zinn's synthesis of our understanding of life, death, culture, and art, long after I shut the book. Beyond these larger themes and questions, however, is a true usefulness. This book will help you approach work in the theatre in a smart and focused way. As a young actor, this book is incredibly valuable as it has given me a way to understand and develop my process and training. I recommend this book to anyone who acts, wonders about acting, or feels themselves acting as they go through their day.

There are so many different lenses with which to read and use this book, whether as an actor, director, teacher, audience member, psychologist - or for anyone interested in tracing a massive and broad sweep of human culture and thought. Zinn manages to weave the history of performance and acting together with a historical continuum of understanding in human psychology; it is a tall order that Zinn pulls off with ease.Actors and directors who are hungry of a scientific understanding and approach to the craft should stop here first, if only in so far as Zinn provides a guidepost and map to what seems like every branch of performance that has existed, from proto-rituals around the campfire to the Greeks to Shakespeare to Chekhov to Breaking Bad. It is a brilliant tool for those who need to buff up their theater history. The quality of the writing is what I would expect of a middle school student. Carla seems to be some sort of super power, and if it were presented that she was, indeed, maybe I could believe that she was able to do the things she does. It is very violent, too. I'm glad that I didn't pay for this.

After all everyone is talking about bring the wolly mammoth back. But know that book 1 was only half the story. You need to purchase book 2 to finish the story. I couldn't wait for it to show up on the free list! Was $2.99.

It is the most commonly used language in doing interview, answering national examination and even communicating to our fellowmen in other country or place with different, unique culture and language. This is the reason why we have to practice English.For non-native speakers like Asia, we tend to translate our own dialect to a corresponding English words, thus, in the process of transliteration, we develop accent which is hard to understand for those native speakers. Sometimes, some of us are having a hard time pronouncing the words with /r/ and /s/. For us to be equipped, reading a lot if very helpful. Start thinking in English, watch movies and even practice reading English words whenever possible. Great book.

It provides step by step instructions on how to do basic poses to improve American accent skills & you can swiftly conquer this sound and rapidly improve your accent. This book reveals some really important factors of accent reduction. If you have a really good ear, you’ll also hear that when you stress the first syllable the pitch of your voice lowers even while you’re still speaking it. The author explains so well which are the most important facts for having an American accent, how it can be useful for applying a job and for the communication and interaction with others. This book really describes the necessity of eliminating accent. As I expected, This book was worth reading.It's full of wonderful tips.Overall, It was really helpful guide I highly recommended.

I certainly believe that our accent is one of the factors that affects the flow of our communication. It has direct effect on our career goals.I, for one take pride in my accent. Therefore, I have honed my accent to adapt in many situations. I feel like this book will benefit most those that are not naturally English speaking or learning English as their second language. I do not discriminate based on accent but I have to agree that softening your accent makes it more professionally equipped especially in your career advancement.The steps and tips are practical that uses common words. Direct to the point and concise. This is exactly what my people need. I think this book is perfect with audio companions. Recommended!

While the main character, Sharie, definitely has a courageous and gutsy attitude, she's set apart because she's also got martial arts skills. She's skillful in a special type of martial arts that has a bit of supernatural, elemental-based "spirit" thrown in for a unique flair. Yes, she can fight with fire-infused punches! She owes these skills to a practioner of the "Lethian Arts" who agreed to take her in the day she loses the only two people she had in the world, her sister and her twin brother. I think someone who has lost their will, or what they hold dear, is a powerful force when they find strength. Sharie tells her master, the practioner she met on that fateful day, that she wants to become stronger, not just to avenge her family, but because she saw something in his eyes that was noble, or confident, and she wants that kind of strength. There's another time that she's wondering why women seem to get the short end of the stick in the physical-strength department, and she learns that true strength isn't a competition- or a comparison of muscle masses- as much as it is an awareness of your shortcomings, yet not letting those hold you back from doing the impossible! This book has more than just a strong female lead, however; it has other character types that I love to see in stories: twins, wise and exceptional masters, smart guys, friends that would die for you. The Lethian also has a dash of mystery, and perspectives seen through different characters' eyes, great wise and uplifting advice, and intense emotional scenes. Strong familial/friend bonds, intense fights, and a powerful bad guy are all excellent elements of a fighting, heck even a fantasy, book. This book has all that and more!

Gripping, Moving, Profound By Emma Park Honestly, when I first received my copy of the 578-page novel I thought, 'This will take me at least 2 months to read...' But nope, I simply could not stop myself from reading "just one more page" every night for 3 days straight.This really is a masterpiece. A bewitching page-turner, the plot is perfectly paced and enthralling from cover to cover. The characters are complex, relatable, conflicted, and dynamic. It is no small feat to mesmerize a reader with compelling story-lines and convincing characters, but this novel does so with incredible depth and compassion. Even the terrifying and undeniably malicious antagonist is portrayed with understanding and insightful perspective. However, this novel's most extraordinary achievement is its tireless exploration of what it means to be strong. The protagonist goes through a demanding journey to understand and exemplify strength, from dealing with searing personal loss to confronting her worst violator with everything at stake. It is the ultimate fight of the body, mind, and spirit. And while this work is fictional, there are some striking parallels between the nuances of the plot and real-world circumstances that are sure to stir your conscience.It's not all solemn and grave though – there's a generous helping of endearing humor too! Highly recommended for all :)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good story, generally recommended. By lubuergi Very good read. Impressive even for being rufi's first attempt at a written story of this length. A lot of authors fail to pull it off this well.The characters are fully developed. Even with many of the minor characters, you get to see in a scene or two that there's more to them than just a name, looks and the sometimes short-lived role they have to play. There were also thoughts going into background and motivation there.The story has a number of twists. Some of which were somewhat predictable for a heavy reader like me, many were not. But most importantly: None of which felt forced. A major plus point to me is that the story wasn't just static. It developed as the characters did, developed added depth and branches and step by step was resolved quite nicely. It wasn't rushed, it wasn't unnecessarily drawn out. And even though we got closure for most of our questions (except some will they/won't they maybe), it doesn't feel as if this has to be the end of it. There's potential for future stories, not just in the same setting but with the same characters being involved. Be it as major characters or in the background.Generally recommended to anyone who likes to read a good story. And at nearly 600 pages that didn't grow boring for even one sentence, it's basically a steal!

Nice descriptions of the western country( one of Mr. Grey's forte. Bad guys,noble heroes and an impossibly good heroine. No sex so suitable for most young people. However those who are politically correct may quibble at the descriptions of blacks, native Americans and Mexican-Americans. However that was the language of the times and we should not rewrite history to suit our own political beliefs.

You can skip the whole part from about 94% to 99% of the way through, which was almost entirely a very detailed and unnecessary description of a car ride. It might have been meant to draw out the suspense, but it was entirely too long for that - particularly since the payoff is very small. You read (or skim) pages after pages of descriptions of the harrowing drive for nothing, because the end is very unsatisfying - no romantic meeting or glimpse of the characters' happiness together or anything. Some people might like to "use their imaginations," but I would rather use my imagination for the hundreds of miles of driving and actually read about the characters' interaction. There are a lot of other unnecessary descriptions and plot devices as well, or parts that aren't particularly important that are drawn out. Lastly, throughout the book there are no real romantic scenes between the main characters - there's barely even any discernible romantic/sexual tension. And the guy isn't even present for about half the book. I for one didn't find it satisfying.

By Rich Summer If you are an aristocratic young lady that is getting jaded with touring Europe and high society functions, then why not decide to visit your black-sheep brother in the fairly tamed West. Of course he hasn't been to town to pick up your telegrams yet. This leaves you at the train station wondering why your brother isn't there. Then things get a tad hectic. So read it. It has an ending line I never expected to see in a Western.There is a lot more to the plot. The dynamics are interesting.Zane Grey was only about a half century ahead of his time. It seems like other westerns are imitations.He may actually spend too much time on his character's motivations. How can people that have a well-defined purpose or goal continually question themselves?As in most westerns the folks are bigger than life. The scenery is great. I think Louis L'Amour learned from him.Each of his novels has sent me to a dictionary a half-dozen to a dozen times. I don't believe I have a small vocabulary. I actually learn while reading a Western. LoL

The dark dancer knows she’s here for sure. He glanced at Stella. She was lying unconscious on the ground. “Stella!!” He jabbed at one of the animals and his sword went down its throat as it opened its mouth to bite at him. It growled and fell onto the ground in pain. Adrian yanked his sword back and ran to Stella when he saw that the other animal was heading toward her. He charged it and sliced it on its stomach, black blood poured everywhere. The animal growled and turned to Adrian. “Get out of thisss.” It hissed at him angrily. “Let usss have the girl and we will not bother you anymore.” “Not a chance.” Adrian held his sword high, black blood dripping from the tip. “Get out of here and go back to the shadowy abyss that you came from. Go back to your master and tell him you’ve failed.” “I wouldn’t dreeeam of it.” “Then I’ll force you!” Adrian slashed it across one of its legs. The animal howled in pain. It barred its teeth, red eyes glinting with anger. The animal bit at Adrian, but he ducked away and slashed it across the back. More black blood poured onto the ground and Adrian’s sword. The beast howled. “Fine! Fine! Don’t kill me and I will leave with the other one. We will leave if you leave usssss alone. But I promisssse it won’t be that lassst time you sssee us. I will rip your heart out next time we meet!” It growled and ran off into the forest, the other animal limping after it. Adrian leaned over Stella. “Stella, Stella, wake up.” He sheathed his sword and lifted her into his arms.

As Hector Campbell answers an officer's questions about the make-believe war that he and his fellow-comrades are doing Hector never imagines it could be the great Turenne. But before long Hector is counted a part of Turenne's household, where he is involved in several dangerous escapades. First Hector, along with his boy-servant Paolo, creep through the town of Turin and send a message into the citadel, where a group of Protestants are holding out against the Catholics and their friends, something that quite a few had found impossible to do. Later, Hector, along with five friends, rescues the Baroness of Blenfiox and her daughter Norah from an attack by several hundred peasants. Hector also stumbles into a robber's den, where he and his retainer must fight for their lives. But the gallant officer does not stop there, instead he not only thwarts a plan to kill Marzarin, but also kills Monsieur de Beauvais, a very good swordsman who challenged Hector to a duel. This book is full of courage, a book that you will benefit greatly from. And for anyone who likes history, this book is a must!
