Excerpt: This is it. I’m going to die. I’m so stupid. So, so stupid. Stella rolled as far away as she could, but pain shot through her whole body so much that she let out a strangled cry and lay on the ground groaning in pain and staring up at the huge beasts as they circled her, getting ready to pounce. Stella’s vision swam. She couldn't move. Her whole mind was pain. Everything was blurry and painful. The biggest of the animals jumped into the air and was soaring toward her. Stella took a deep breath and braced herself for the pain that would follow and then the darkness. But it didn’t come. She heard an angry yell and then she saw somebody jumping onto the animal and tackling it. Her fuzzy mind somehow sensed something behind her and she turned slowly around. Then the pain came. One of the animals bit down on her arm. She cried out in pain and then she saw the animal being pushed back by somebody. Her mind went black as the pain took her. Adrian swung around with his sword, hitting at the animals. I should have known they’d come after her. He thought as he ducked out of the reach of one of the animals. The dark dancer knows she’s here for sure. He glanced at Stella. She was lying unconscious on the ground. “Stella!!” He jabbed at one of the animals and his sword went down its throat as it opened its mouth to bite at him. It growled and fell onto the ground in pain. Adrian yanked his sword back and ran to Stella when he saw that the other animal was heading toward her. He charged it and sliced it on its stomach, black blood poured everywhere. The animal growled and turned to Adrian. “Get out of thisss.” It hissed at him angrily. “Let usss have the girl and we will not bother you anymore.” “Not a chance.” Adrian held his sword high, black blood dripping from the tip. “Get out of here and go back to the shadowy abyss that you came from. Go back to your master and tell him you’ve failed.” “I wouldn’t dreeeam of it.” “Then I’ll force you!” Adrian slashed it across one of its legs. The animal howled in pain. It barred its teeth, red eyes glinting with anger. The animal bit at Adrian, but he ducked away and slashed it across the back. More black blood poured onto the ground and Adrian’s sword. The beast howled. “Fine! Fine! Don’t kill me and I will leave with the other one. We will leave if you leave usssss alone. But I promisssse it won’t be that lassst time you sssee us. I will rip your heart out next time we meet!” It growled and ran off into the forest, the other animal limping after it. Adrian leaned over Stella. “Stella, Stella, wake up.” He sheathed his sword and lifted her into his arms.

Anne Zedwick is really great at describing and developing characters. Also, she is fabulous at describing scenery, so if you like creative descriptions, and intense characters, you'll love this book! I highly recommend it.
