NATIONAL BESTSELLERThe long-awaited memoir from John Fogerty, the legendary singer-songwriter and creative force behind Creedence Clearwater Revival.Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of the most important and beloved bands in the history of rock, and John Fogerty wrote, sang, and produced their instantly recognizable classics: "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Born on the Bayou," and more. Now he reveals how he brought CCR to number one in the world, eclipsing even the Beatles in 1969. By the next year, though, Creedence was falling apart; their amazing, enduring success exploded and faded in just a few short years. FORTUNATE SON takes readers from Fogerty's Northern California roots, through Creedence's success and the retreat from music and public life, to his hard-won revival as a solo artist who finally found love.

Review One of The Washington Post's Notable Nonfiction Books of 2015"A natural storyteller, folksy and crusty, Fogerty chronicles the brief but brilliant success of his band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and its tragic collapse."―Greg Schneider, The Washington Post"A classic rock 'n' roll survivor's tale."―Mark Guarino, The Chicago Tribune"A very readable, fascinating account of John Fogerty's life.... One of the best stories of the entire '60s rock 'n' roll era, it is Fogerty's, it is here, and it's worth reading his whole account of the thing. Glad it finally arrived."―Dave DiMartino, Yahoo! Music"Fortunate Son will take you on a fascinating journey in the tormented artist's own voice."―Ken Hoffman, Houston Chronicle"It is fitting that writing--i.e., songwriting--is the main theme of Fogerty's biography, which was penned with the same depth of feeling as his music.... But this isn't just an account of one musician's ups and downs with art and life; Fogerty has created a solid study of popular music over the past 50 years."―Publishers Weekly"A cracking good storyteller."―Henry L. Carrigan, Jr., BookPage

By Mike O'Connor Creedence Clearwater is the classic story of a talented if business-naive songwriter/musician whom ran afoul of a sleazy record company who took him and the other members of his group for everywhere they could. John Fogerty's reward for giving the world such rock classics as PROUD MARY, RUN THROUGH THE JUNGLE, BORN ON THE BAYOU and SWEET HITCHHIKER was to be trapped in a twisted web of impossible contracts, shady businessmen and even betrayal by the others in the group. That he survived and eventually rediscovered his musical muse is a measure of the man. FORTUNATE SON is Fogerty's version of those tumultuous but often soul-crushing years. A 2015 Little, Brown release, FORTUNATE SON finally tells music fans 'the rest of the (CCR) story.'That story has been told over the years, sometimes in bits and pieces, sometimes in self-serving accounts by band members. Basically, Fogerty, his brother Tom, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford signed their lives, copyrights and almost all their profits away to Saul Zaentz and Fantasy Records. When CCR folded, Fogerty, being the talent in the group, found himself still chained to Zaentz in terms of new product. The money Fogerty had earned was buried in Fantasy's legal labyrinth and, despite, years of legal wrangling, never came back to him. After hitting rock bottom, Fogerty was saved by the love on a new wife and began making music again.Fogerty's book may strike some as bitter and vindictive but court battles have revealed the truth behind his statements. As far as the relationships between band members goes, things might have gone smoother if Fogerty hadn't been so forceful in his leadership role but, then again, he was the one with the vision, the music, the song ideas so who can say what might "have been better" all those years ago.In any case, FORTUNATE SON is a straight-shooting account of a guy who was there dead center in the music-making, the legal battles, the band fights, etc. In the end, it's terribly sad and grossly unfair what Fogerty went through with Fantasy Records but it's wonderful he got his groove back. It would be great if he did a sequel concentrating on the music! Recommended.

I've always thought that Creedence Clearwater Revival was one of the best American bands ever and mourned their breakup. In this book, Fogerty explains why. Poor guy - he was totally screwed over by Fantasy records and the rest of CCR became very jealous of him, so much so that he made a decision to be as far away from the camera as he could during album cover shots (check out Cosmo's Factory). It's a testimony to Fogerty's talent that when the other members of CCR wanted to write and perform and when he agreed, the resulting album (Mardi Gras) was terrible. John Fogerty WAS Creedence Clearwater Revival and has since gone on to have a stellar solo career and a happy family life. He deserves it.

By John Wedeward Finally, after 45 years, the REAL truth about Creedance Clearwater Reviaval and Saul Zaentz comes out.Just read in One Day, John Fogerty's Newly released autobiography "Fortunate Son" In it he cuts away ALL THE BULL S*** from Hank Bordowitz's Book "Bad Moon Rising (Unauthorized bio of Creedance Clearwater Revival) and exposes band members Stu Cook, Doug Clifford and brother Tom for all the deceitful and ingratitude he got from them over the LAST 40 years, even thu it was his talent that took CCR to the TOP of the music world!! He also exposes the hateful record company Fantasy Records and owner Saul Zanentz for all the hateful way they handled CCR and John himself. (He is the ONLY musician that got sued for plagiarizing "himself", Fantasy vs Fogerty, which John won in the United States Supreme Court!!!! In the book, John pulls NO punches, he talks about his dark days after the break up of CCR and the lawsuite (after the release of the LP Centerrfield in 1986) and his use of alcohol and even the idea of suicide. But, if all you have read in "Bad Moon Rising" (which is VERY Slanted towards the other band members and Fantasy Records and which John is NEVER interviewed for) you really do NOT know the whole truth!!!. John Also talks about WHY he refused to play with the other band membersat CCR's induction into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which they knew he was NOT going to way before the ceremony, even thu they claim other wise in Bordowtz's book. This is a MUST read for ALL CCR and John Fogerty Fans!!!! NOW THE REAL TRUTH HAS FINALLY COME OUT!!! After 45 years. I would give this book 10 or more stars if I could!!!!!!!
