It's known as the world's friendliest border. Five thousand miles of unfenced, unwalled international coexistence and a symbol of neighborly goodwill between two great nations: the United States and Canada. But just how friendly is it really? In War Plan Red, the secret "cold war" between the United States and Canada is revealed in full and humorous detail. With colorful maps and historical imagery, the breezy text walks the reader through every aspect of the long-simmering rivalry—from the "Pork and Beans War" between Maine and Newfoundland lumberjacks, to the "Pig War" of the San Juan Islands, culminating with excerpts from actual declassified invasion plans the Canadian and U.S. militaries drew up in the 1920s and 1930s. A perfect gift for history buffs (and Canadians and Americans alike), War Plan Red offers up a new wrinkle in the ever-evolving history of North American continental relations.

War Plan Red: The United States' Secret Plan to Invade Canada and Canada's Secret Plan to Invade the United States, by Kevin Lippert

Review "We were charmed and amazed by this history of the 'world's friendliest border.' " - San Francisco Chronicle"Every once in a while, leaders of the two countries that sit along the world's longest open border have eyed the territory on the other side as prime for an invasion. Lippert's fascinating and frequently funny book details the moments when the countries' relationship became a little strained, including details of Canada's 1921 plan for attacking the United States and a full reproduction of 'War Plan Red,' the 1935 American scheme to storm Canada. The details of Canada's 1921 espionage excursion through New England alone are worth a purchase--find out what state's men were characterized as 'fat and lazy but pleasant and congenial!'' -- Mental Floss"Terrifically fun." - Vox.com"War Plan Red is a beautiful and fun book. It's a military history told in a snarky, fun, pop way, full of interesting historical stories and beautifully done. A fascinating exploration of little-known elements to Canada's longstanding relationship with our neighbor to the south." -- CBC Radio

About the Author Kevin C. Lippert is the founder and publisher of Princeton Architectural Press.

It's a real eye-opener in terms of our relationships with both Canada and the UK. Many Canadians, to this day, carry a bit of a defensive love-hate attitude towards the US, and this book helped explain that. And if British intelligence did, in fact, "encourage" the sinking of the Lusitania in order to pull the US into WW I, as there's some non-definitive evidence for, reading this book put that theory into a more plausible context for me. War with Canada or the UK is unthinkable today, but this wasn't the case until after WW II. In the 1920's and 30's, it was plausible. And all parties were far less than honest and above-board in dealing with each other. The US was perhaps the most guilty of chronic double-speak.This book is quite funny. Or rather, history can be hilarious sometimes. Case in point, the Pig War. An American farmer on an island in Puget Sound that straddled the US-Canada border caught a pig in his garden, eating his potatoes, so he shot and killed it. The pig belonged to the Hudson Bay company. Shortly there were thousands of British and US troops massed on the island. The British commander was ordered to attack, but refuse to "go to war over one pig." Thus we have the "most perfect war" ever--one shot fired, one casualty, and that was the pig.My criticism of this book is simply that it's too short, too short for the price, and in the sense that I simply wanted more. I wish the author would have spent more time, and provided more background. If you're not extremelyconversant with North American history and geography, you'll want to use Wiki a lot! Still, I absolutely recommend this. I loved it.

War Plan Red reveals the real truth many of us suspected all along By Steve As someone who lives and works in New Jersey, I was pleased to find a book that adds further evidence to what most of us New Jerseyites feel as we travel the world... namely, that if a group of people seem too friendly, there is something fishy going on underneath the surface.War Plan Red exposes once and for all that those eerily pleasant Canadians have all this time been secretly plotting the destruction -- or at least the invasion of the "lower 48".Author Kevin Lippert, while claiming to take Our side, shows a distinctively northernly bias with opinions such as: "with the possible exception of boxed macaroni and cheese, many consider pork and beans to be the United States' greatest contribution to world cuisine." (p.33) Clearly, any author authentically coming from the culture that brought to the world the Twinkie, McNuggets, and The Oreo Cookie would be expected to lift his sights a bit higher. Unless.. unless, Mr. "Lippert" (If that's his real name) is in fact a Canadian citizen, or at least a covert sympathiser. Luckily, we have the NSA, and I'm sure our authorities have "Kevin" fully in their electronic sights.Speaking of patriotism, a real American would also find it dishonorable to juxtapose President Barack Obama's 2012 denial of any "plan to invade Canada" as well as US General Martin Dempsy's (Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) in 2014, on a timeline following "Appendix A", a recently declassified plan for the invasion, which concludes after examining multiple land, air and sea options, that the best attack route would be "by joint operations by sea from Boston." (p.123).As to motives for a Red White and Blue Preemptive Strike, Lippert notes that "Canada has the world's second largest reserve of crude oil, after Saudi Arabia" and "about 20 percent of the world's fresh water supply.. which many believe will be the cause of our next global war" (p.83). Reciprocally, highly desirable "hockey-related" American assets, according to Lippert, include the Zamboni company, headquartered in Paramount California (p.84). This again shows a suspiciously nuanced understanding of Canadian priorities. So the next time that unnaturally nice person with the maple leaf beach towel tries to start a conversation, think to this book.

By Jeffrey Leighton Despite what most of us might otherwise believe, the relationship between Canada and the United States has not always been smooth sailing. Kevin Lippert leads us on a journey through history that is both informative and amusing. There have been numerous "incidents" over the years between the two countries, which are described in detail by the author. Some of the turbulence is rooted in the fact that the exact border between the two countries was unclear or unsettled in places. In addition, the relationship was further clouded by the occasionally rocky relationship between the U.S. and Canada's colonial power, Great Britain. This was particularly true during the War of 1812, when open warfare broke out between the two countries. All of this is capped off by the dueling invasion plans that were authored by the two countries - Canada's around 1920 and the U.S. plan (dubbed War Plan Red) in the 1930's. At the back of the book, these war plans are reprinted.War Plan Red is incredibly interesting. I consider myself a history buff, but didn't know about most of the history detailed here. Hard to believe that military minds actually spent the time and effort on creating these plans, but that's part of what makes the book such a compelling read.

By Peter John Pols I bought this to give away to a friends daughter - a YA - (Young Adult) - who I thought might read it and then laugh at it as being old, out of touch, silly, etc. I had hoped for at least a positive response, so I was very happy to find she came to me, and asked so many questions about business, the economy, getting a website, etc, all because she decided she wanted to begin a business due to reading The Cash Boy.I helped her with some ideas, and also read the book myself, and I can tell you, I understand the effect the book has on people. If you have been in business, you will understand what I am about to say: remember the start up times, when it was hard, and you felt each business deal, each decision, etc? Those we call 'the good days' before it gets really going, but at the same time you are very excited and motivated?Well that is the feeling Alger captures and gives you, and it inspires you to do something or re-connect to your business. Its wonderful and I am going to read more of his! Truly, without being over the top, if every American read one of these books, the recession would end, and we would be back on top in the world! Leading the way as we have before. We have lost touch with this feeling of success, its so sad we now look only to the government for leadership, when before we looked in the mirror.

Thorsson Horatio Alger books, these are novels that are appealing to those who read think and grow rich, and any other older money making books powerful `rags to riches stories'These wonderful stories are so powerful today in this economic climate. Back when they were written, there were no stimulus packages, no welfare as we know it, no food stamps, no income tax! Yet, today there is still such despair, that I feel it's very much the same....So having said that, this book is great for two reasons:1) its shows a method and mindset for success! It's not just a story, but the story explains the thinking and mindset of the hero who overcomes terrible odds to find success. The mindset explained is as powerful then as it is today.2) while the story is fiction, the hero figures out a way to succeed - it of course depends on factor 1 above, his mindset, but, once we see how his mind works, he thinks of a plan to become successful - and what I like is the principles that are used are not like typical fiction, but of ways and means that anyone could use to become successful, good business ideas that are still on target for today! This book is great for readers of any age, young or old, as long as you need a lift, and you want something powerful and good in your life, you will enjoy this great work by Alger!

By Felicity Barrington This review is not for the cynics and others who hate America, (whether they live here or not): There are many of us who still believe in the 'American Dream'. Who see in America as a land of opportunity, where a person may make what he wants of himself. This is the reason for the success of movies like the Secret, and books like Think and Grow Rich. Haters of this concept don't believe in the philosophy of 'if it's to be; it's up to me' and personal growth- they believe in the 'it's not my responsibility to be successful, it's the governments, or a union, etc' to make things right. For those of us who DO believe in America and what it stands for, we need to relax from time to time, from our dedicated path to success. From time to time, I like to read a novel or two, to unwind, but there are so few are positive, uplifting, and compelling novels that also promote personal growth and success principles. So finding one or two is GREAT NEWS! However I have made a wonderful discover of a new and magnificently published selection of Horatio Alger books, so now we don't just have one or two, but many, many hours ahead of us to relax, recharge and at the same time instill in ourselves the success principles we all know and love! The Cash Boy is about a teenage boy who is was taken from his relatives and given into the care of a kind woman. A story that is moving and powerful - one of Alger's best rags to riches stories and first time I've see it in print. Lots of exciting plot twists - very rich storytelling here to illustrate the path to success - education, freedom, action and daring. This is also a wonderful book to give a young person, what a gift it would be to have this type of book so early in life! Great plot and a fantastic read!

Anthony Pagano Here I am, cruising along, reading The Last Timekeepers and the Arch of Atlantis and before I realize it, I'm griping handrails, sailing the seas of adventure, whooping and hollering, squinty-eyed, grinning as the winds of time rush around me.It's a rare treat I'm taken back to my childhood but Ledwith has managed to do just that. And if that wasn't enough, I wanted to be one of the characters actually holding the perfectly tuned crystal trident, reading tattered journals and cleaning gunk off a really, really, really old stone arch. Dang it. I want to be a Scribe. Is there an application process? Where do I have to stand in line? Timekeepers is pure awesomeness!Filled with fast-paced action, one-liners, and pop-culture references on just about every other page, Ledwith's turn of phrases would give Joss Whedon a run for his money. She has marvelous wordplay reminiscent of Rick Riordan, frequent satire and amusing simile to earn you a one-way ticket to the nurse's office for a bad case of the funny bones. Without a doubt, Ledwith has managed to craft a wonderful witty take on the Robin Hood legend that would easily find a comfortable place on the shelf of young adult fantasy fiction. ~ Read-Indie-Books

Who could imagine that a punishment could turn into high adventure for five adolescents and two adults - one an unemployed professor and the other said to be a witch - or in the words of the locals: "a bona fide, true-blue hex-machine from England"? From a garden in America they are drawn through the Arch of Atlantis, into an Atlantean temple to be told what they are and what their purpose is. Then they are propelled into medieval England on the eve of the May Day celebrations at Nottingham. The seven discover that the sheriff of Nottingham had vanished and been replaced by somebody from their own time and that history is on the brink of going horribly astray. So, how about creating some chaos to restore the natural order and ensure that history runs its course?"The Last Timekeepers and the Arch of Atlantis" is a wonderfully humorous and highly exciting read. Between laughing out loud at the extremely lively, witty dialogue and smiling at the bickering of the characters, I found it difficult to be serious even when disaster seemed imminent. The marvelously realistic and unique characters endeared themselves to me in the very first couple of chapters. It was fascinating to see how each of them developed and discovered their unique talents during the course of the story. An artificial hand that becomes a magical artifact, and a slingshot made from a forked branch and a jockstrap, are just some of the highly unusual things that can happen when your mission requires you to use what you have on your person, and only that. Although the story in itself is really outstanding, the dialogue and interaction of the children, liberally spiced with hilarious wordplay, makes it a truly unforgettable read. This is the kind of book you would want to keep and reread whenever you need to laugh and relax. Suitable for readers of all ages, I wish I could give this book more than the five stars it most definitely deserves. (Ellen Fritz)

By Reflections of a BookWorm The Last Timekeepers and the Arch of AtlantisBy Sharon LedwithWhen five eighth grade students get into a food fight at school none of them thought it would lead on an adventure through time, the five students are sentenced to yard duty as punishment for their crimes shortly after they arrive at Melody's home the stumble upon an arch that was buried in her back yard. Once they excavate the mysterious arch they are whisked away to Atlantis where they meet up Lilith who is in charge of keeping watch over the gate, she informs them they are the last timekeepers and must travel through time to stop an evil magus from changing time. Not only is this an original novel in itself but also a retelling of a classic story, Robin Hood, as the teens travel back to Nottingham on their search to stop Belial. The author does a wonderful job in crafting this novel, blending the two stories seamlessly such as when you think the timekeepers are going to inadvertently change history themselves the author weaves the story back to the original. The only problem I had with this novel is in the beginning when we are getting to know the characters. The author would call them by their first name and a paragraph or so later start using their last names to refer to the characters, as she is building the foundation of the story I would get lost thinking, "Okay, who is Treena and Mui?" when they are actually the same person. So be sure to pay attention to the characters last names as you go along, other than that this was a great young adult novel, it was highly unique and entertaining to read.I was sent a free copy of this book for an honest review.

The plot twists and turns and keeps you at the edge of your seat -- especially as the book nears its climax. Dr. Will Howard finds himself the victim of a time-space-warp event, finds that he has replaced himself (a duller, introverted version) in a parallel world. There are beautiful women, intrigue, murder, betrayal, sinister government plots, believable characters, binding friendship and loyalty and a plot that hangs together to the end and leaves the door open for future adventures.I thoroughly enjoyed the book — from beginning to end. It's a fun read. I could hardly put it down — and look forward to the next installment of the adventures of Will Howard and Stacey. In fact, I would say that the next book is urgently needed — After all, we can't let Ron and Dr. Blake in the hands of THE COLLECTIVE. Nor can we ignore the need to discover the main actors behind the scenes, the gatekeepers, as you call them, who are pulling the STRINGS and, as yet, are a few steps ahead of Dr. Will Howard.

A review of the novel "String" by author Mr. Timothy Spear By william korn Not being a fan of traditional science fiction novels, I found Timothy Spear’s novel ‘String’ to be wonderful surprise that meets my stringent demands for a “page turner”. The story contains elements of an exciting space-time thriller and/or adventure story, and Mr. Spear has created interesting and realistic characters that blend within an excellent storyline. This makes ‘String’ hard to put down. I loved this story so much I didn’t dwell on the intriguing scientific elements of the novel. Always on the prowl for a good new author, I was excited to learn two more books will comprise the String Trilogy. I can hardly wait to learn the fate of the characters Mr. Spear has brought to life.Catherine Korn

By Tracey Lundquist, M.Ed., B.E, B.M, B.S, Captivating, compelling and driven, STRING is a thrill-ride taking the reader through a twist of adventures that evoke every emotion. Passion, lust, envy, jealously, greed, fear, rage, sorrow- to name a few. Is duality possible? If so, what happens when an individual is thrust from his current world into another world where he simultaneously exists? Time-warp travel is a dice roll. It can be either fascinating or devastating in determining the future of the universe. This breathtaking novel, book one of Timothy Spear's trilogy, is impossible to put down and leaves its audience hungry for book two.

Compelling from cover to cover, this is the story of one of the most recorded and beloved jazz trumpeters of all time. With unsparing honesty and a superb eye for detail, Clark Terry, born in 1920, takes us from his impoverished childhood in St. Louis, Missouri, where jazz could be heard everywhere, to the smoke-filled small clubs and carnivals across the Jim Crow South where he got his start, and on to worldwide acclaim. Terry takes us behind the scenes of jazz history as he introduces scores of legendary greats—Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Doc Severinsen, Ray Charles, Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims, and Dianne Reeves, among many others. Terry also reveals much about his own personal life, his experiences with racism, how he helped break the color barrier in 1960 when he joined the Tonight Show band on NBC, and why—at ninety years old—his students from around the world still call and visit him for lessons.

From the Inside Flap “Clark Terry is the epitome of jazz trumpet, of jazz, and of human kindness. His playing is impeccable and original, scintillating, humorous, and brimming with pluckish wit and late-night pungence. His style is virtuosic and deeply intelligent. It cannot be identified by decade or era or style (as it is timeless and definitive of American Jazz and the profoundest aspirations of the jazzman): to be one of a kind, to endure, to inspire, to be truthful, to be accurate, to swing. He has inspired thousands of younger musicians and nourished us with his interest, his knowledge, and his love. His contributions go far beyond the bandstand and he will always be an indelible part of our lives, inseparable from our identity as musicians and people. We all love him deeply. And forever.”—Wynton Marsalis“Clark Terry is a living history of much of jazz, to which he has contributed as a deeply imaginative soloist and influential band leader. His additional life mission has long been ‘to teach as many young musicians as I could.’ His first pupil was Quincy Jones and he was the first to recognize the potential of Miles Davis. To this day, Clark’s international impact is such that young students come to his home in a small town in Arkansas from Israel, Australia, and other lands to take lessons from Clark. Now, at last, in this memoir of his storied career, Clark swingingly personifies the multi-dimensional jazz life. He writes as he plays—the very sounds and rhythms of surprise!”—Nat Hentoff, author of At the Jazz Band Ball: Sixty Years on the Jazz Scene“Clark Terry is the unique voice in America’s creative art form called jazz. I would not have a career without him. His friends and admirers cover the whole planet.”—Jimmy “Little Bird” Heath"Clark Terry has not only been living his dream, he has spent his life helping others to achieve their dreams as well. He's an extraordinary role model and mentor who has walked the walk. And now, in addition to decades of wonderful music, he is giving us another gift, his autobiography. It is up to us to share the love, the music, and the stories with our children, and our children’s children, for this is how they’ll learn. Thank you, Clark, for the wonderful example you have set. We love you.”—Nancy Wilson"Clark Terry is an American Master. I love to listen to him, particularly ‘Mumbles.’ I was so delighted when we received degrees together, along with Edward Kennedy, at the New England Conservatory in 1997."—Aretha Franklin"I've always been a great admirer of Clark Terry's work on the trumpet and flugelhorn, and now I have become a big admirer of his work as an author—you will love this book." —Clint Eastwood"I met Clark when I was sixteen years old. He saw something in me and without hesitation planted me in the most fertile soil any aspiring artist could hope to be in . . . his heart. I am eternally grateful for his generous spirit, love, encouragement, storytelling, and above all laughter throughout the years! Clark . . . I love you madly."—Dianne Reeves“I’ve come to know Clark as undoubtedly the greatest teacher in the history of jazz. From the mentoring of Miles Davis and Quincy Jones, to the millions of young musicians touched by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz all over the globe, Clark and his incredible music stand as a symbol of intellect and spirituality of the highest order to all of us. Thank God for Clark Terry!” —Thelonious Monk, III“Thank you, Clark, for a lifetime of your incredible talents, and for filling this world with so much love. All of us at the Jazz Foundation of America are sincerely thankful for your compassion and involvement in our efforts to help musicians in need. You are an inspiration and a classic role model truly beyond category!” —Wendy Oxenhorn“His style, his sound, his look, his voice, his heart, his soul. That’s what inspires Snoop Dogg about Mr. Terry. If I could only do half of what he did in the music business, my life would be complete. I had the honor and pleasure of spending a few days with Mr. Terry. He’s the greatest to ever do it. Thank you, Uncle Quincy, for introducing me to Mr. Mumbles!!!” —Snoop Dogg“Clark and I have been friends for many decades, and I’ve always enjoyed his music. Recently, on a long, three-hundred-mile drive to our gig, we listened to Clark’s wonderful Porgy and Bess album. This was the second or third time that we’d done that. It sure was some great playing on your part, Clark! We enjoyed those Chicago Jazz Orchestra brass players, too. Congratulations on your book.” —Dave Brubeck“When I saw Clark performing at the Blue Note in New York, I thought to myself, ‘Could this be what all of us instrumentalists are really trying to do?’ Before my eyes and ears, the legend/man/craftsman went there. As I saw it, there was straight to the source of personal expression. Through Mumbles or through the flugelhorn, the man spoke to me that night, and I’ll remember that always as a larger than life experience.” —Esperanza Spalding“Clark Terry is a jazz superstar, and one of the most extraordinary individuals I have ever encountered. He’s a world-class musician, educator, composer, jazz pioneer, and a co-founder of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. He has inspired people of all ages with his humor, courage, passion and vision. Thanks for your friendship, Clark, and for always being there for the Institute.” —Tom Carter“Whenever I see Clark Terry, I always look forward to talking to him and reminiscing about the early bebop years. There’s an expression coined by Lester Young that succinctly says it all about Clark Terry: ‘chandelier,’ a raconteur par excellence, Mumbles-brilliant, original musical brilliance. It has been a privilege.” —Billy Dee Williams"The one I admire without restriction is Clark Terry, whose pronunciation at the trumpet or bugle is a model of sharpness, clearness and authority. A model which is given with generosity to all of those who want to play this instrument...the way it should be played." —Maurice André

About the Author Clark Terry’s illustrious career—as an innovative trumpeter and flugelhornist, horn designer, leading jazz educator, and composer—has covered an epic span of jazz history. Winner of the 2010 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and an NEA Jazz Master, in addition to many other accolades and awards, Terry is the author of Let’s Talk Trumpet: From Legit to Jazz and The Interpretation of the Jazz Language, both with Phil Rizzo.

By mangoesbananas What a total treat to finally be able to read the life story of Clark Terry, the absolute master musician who is known the world around as having the happiest sound in jazz. I loved reading about all the events that took him from being a boy in a junkyard to becoming the one-of-a-kind jazz legend that he is. Who knew that building a trumpet from a garden hose and a funnel would lead to Clark evolving into the most-recorded trumpet player of all time and one of only 4 trumpet players in history to ever receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Clark's life story, lovingly written over the course of 20 years by Clark and his wife is an excellent read. In fact, the book is so engaging, I will be reading it a-Gwen and a-Gwen!!

And he has always been so good to students and fans.A true GENTLE man. This book shows us all that one can choose to behave with grace and manners in spite of how one is treated by parents and society in general. And it shows what one can accomplish with single-minded devotion to excellence.I loved how he remembered so many musicians he worked with and named them by name. There are some very dicy situations revealed in the book that I would never have guessed.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great book for beginners! By Michael Why So I'm a beginning uke player and was already familiar with the banjo book written by Wayne Erbsen (co-author of this book). In keeping with his other books, I found this very clear, approachable, and easy to follow (I really am a musical instrument ignoramus, as I didn't grow up playing music at all!) As II learn a new instrument this book is really helping. As with the other books in the series, you get a little history, some guidance on the different styles of ukes, tips on holding, strumming and tuning, and of course many easy songs and some more complex ones for when you feel more comfortable.Though the entire book has a very down home, folksy look to it there's actually a mix of genres, from traditional Hawaiian songs to jazz to old-timey music to blues and more. (Once you're comfortable with those, look for uke version of more popular songs online--these will get you started just fine) For comparison, I've got another beginner uke book which is pretty much all old folk songs--not quite my thing--so kudos to this book's authors for including a mix.The book also comes with an instructional audio CD (or mp3s for those buying the digital book). Useful so you can hear what it's *supposed* to sound like versus what your and my attempts will be at first. :-)Parrish and Erbsen's experience in teaching complete beginners--even yes, the complete ignoramus--how to play an instrument shines through in this book. If you or someone you know wants to play the uke, this book is a great foundation. And if you're buying someone a uke as a gift this would be a great accompaniment!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By C. Hall Chords, strumming techniques, tab for melody playing...it's all here! User friendly!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The tablature is extremely easy to read By B. Sizemore This book has such straight-to-the-point instructions, I was playing chords or melody in no time at all! The tablature is extremely easy to read. And playing along with the CD is really fun.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Where Shadows Lie By Rebekah The Story:Shawn Parrino left the gangster lifestyle four years ago. Following an imprisonment, he returned to his hometown of Arrowhead, and tries to start a new life. He didn’t have many friends; his best friend and girlfriend Virginia, her brother Bryan, and another ex-gangster, Jackson, are about it. Besides his next door neighbor, Mrs. Jenson, and Virgina’s cousin Joy, no one really cared anything about Shawn.Except, the gang he left behind. He had hoped they would just forget him, but their motto, “Blood in, blood out,” was more than just a saying. It was reality. A reality that got slammed into his face just when he least wanted it.Thirsting for revenge, as well as to appease their boss’s personal vendetta, the gang known as The Shadows, chase after Shawn, trying to break him to their will. When he won’t yield, the boss decides to go after the few people that Shawn loves. The Writing Style:Miss Rising is very good at building her ‘world’ for the reader. Arrowhead and the surrounding area is very easy to picture. She also manages to describe it without long and detailed descriptions, instead allowing it to flow naturally into the narrative. She also describes emotions and pain very well. The reader’s heart wrenches when one character finally breaks down sobbing or holds their breath as another slowly loses consciousness. Pain or sorrow feels very real.On the other hand, certain aspects of the book felt like they could use some more research or realism. Things like recovery time after injury or how the police operate. Some areas of the book felt very unrealistic. The Characters:I liked Miss Rising’s characters. I liked their connection to each other. Even so, I didn’t like some of their behavior. Another area that felt very unrealistic is the danger these characters would put themselves into. Danger that could have been easily avoided, if, for instance, Virginia has listened to Shawn a little more often. Yes, they usually managed to survive the danger – sometimes just barely – but it felt so needless, all too often. More on that in a minute. The dialog felt stilted at times, but I liked the way they communicated. Miss Rising did letting the character’s relationships shine through the dialog. Not something that everyone is good at. I did like the strength of Bryan and Virginia’s sibling relationship, as well.A Few More Thoughts:There are a couple of things that bothered me, but don’t read if you don’t want some spoilers. Nothing from the conclusion, just a few aspects of the book.I know the author’s intent with showing the escape of the main characters from so much danger was likely to show how miraculous the protection of the LORD can be. I get that. However, the LORD is not an insurance policy to allow us to run our heads stupidly into danger. He doesn’t usually work like that. I appreciate what Miss Rising was trying to communicate, but I can’t help but think it needed to be shown in a different way. God does often show mercy and gives us protection, but it doesn’t usually look like a young woman going into Gang City Central, on foot, alone, and unprotected by human standards, with a pending death threat on her head from the main gang living there, justifying her actions by saying that the LORD will take care of her.The way Virginia broke off her relationship with Shawn also bothered me. She knew better than to enter into a romantic relationship with an unbeliever. She knew better beforehand and those close to her made sure to warn her about it, but she justified and defended herself. While this was shown to be wrong – and I applaud the author for that – Virginia kicked Shawn out of her house the first time he openly questioned and showed his disapproval of the LORD’s doings. Do I think Shawn was in the right? No. But I don’t think Virginia was in the right either. Besides, she hurt Shawn deeply by agreeing to date him in the first place – and this was never really acknowledged.Cautions:There was some violence and several deaths in this book, besides some rather intense situations, but being as it is a Thriller, that is probably to be expected. I wouldn’t give it to young children, but the book never goes into anything truly gory or overly descriptive. Even the deaths are handled with care. Conclusion:I did enjoy seeing Miss Rising’s characters again, Where Shadows Lie, after having read her first book, Holding the Future Hostage, a few years back. I would probably recommend this book for ages fourteen and up.

Full of surprises By Faith Blum Recommended ages: 13 & up for gang violenceIntroduction:This was the first Christian book in this genre I have ever read. I was pleasantly surprised at the obvious research bigstock-Urban-Alley-At-Night-30383132and hard work the author did to write this book.Characters: .75/1The characters were usually easy to relate to. I liked Bryan the best, even though he was a minor character. Virginia and Shawn were good, too, but Bryan just struck a cord with me. Maybe because we're both the oldest. There were a few times when the characters seemed a little forced or two-dimensional, but that didn't happen often. The good characters all had flaws and the bad characters had some good aspects, especially the villain.Dialogue: 1/1Tialla did a very good job with the dialogue. Each character had a unique voice and always said things realistically.Plot/storyline: 1/1Let's just say, I'm glad I don't live in a city like the one Shawn lived in. And I wouldn't want to be Virginia or Shawn. But, the plot and storyline was very well done and intriguing. Even to someone who usually reads historical fiction. :)bigstock-Burglar-Hand-Holding-Crowbar-B-25233641quoteOver-all writing quality: .75/1There were a few typos that diminished the reading, but nothing awful. Other than that, the writing was very good.Un-put-down-ability: .75/1There were a few times when the story dragged a little and other times I didn't want to put the book down, but had to.Overall: 4.25/5If you like stories about redemption, mystery, and don't mind some violence, this book is for you. The violence isn't awful and certainly isn't graphic, but it is still there for the imagination to pick up on if you allow it to.I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

A nuclear cataclysm pushed Grethia, a remote planet, into a dark age. A religion emerged to suppress technology by calling it sacred, holy and not for the world. A king broke the control of the priesthood in his kingdom and began to bring crude technology back to life. A young man, his space ship sabotaged, finds himself marooned on Grethia. Through insight, courage and luck, he struggles with the static forces of the status quo and, together with the king, defeats the enemies of progress. His conflicts don’t end as he finds a way off the planet and confronts those who want to end his very existence and destroy the planet’s hard-won independence. The Hand of Grethia takes the reader from a Galactic civilization of space ships and high technology to the dark ages and back in an exciting space opera adventure. SCIENCE FICTION

I expected a novel like: "Iron Star" or "Princes Rescue Inc.," but the story was more light-hearted and reminded me of something written by Murray Leinster or Keith Laumer. I have read science fiction where the writer was better at character development and the scenes did jump from one scene to another a bit, but the story was good enough that I'm buying another of the authors novels and wouldn't mind a sequel to this one. The author didn't have to resort to sex, language or excessive violence to keep the story interesting.

The book is fairly linear and straightforward but interesting as it unfolds. I would have like to have seen a couple of follow through novels. Several story lines left me wanting to learn more of the characters and societies.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Four Stars But! By D. J. R. McGOWAN An awful lot of work has gone into this book and provides some excellent advice to both beginner and advanced artist and I do share and appreciate most of the views and advice given by my fellow artist and while the author warns (quite rightly) about the grid system, he, like so many other books on drawing, puts this method forward. This to me spoils the uniqueness of the book The grid method, once used, is like cocaine and very habit forming and most 'artists' using this method, seldom return to learn how to actually draw! My advice would be to jump ahead and avoid this section, but read and practice the rest, in this otherwise excellent book.Daniel McGowan Portrait artist (author Why Measure? It gives many techniques in each phase of drawing a portrait. It begins with the true fundamentals of pure drawing, let alone a portrait. It goes into excellent details of every phase from beginning to end of completing the portrait.
