Imagine a time when soldiers are trained for missions and they will always be successful. Someday such soldiers may exist... In the meantime The Chronos Project takes expendable people and manipulates them to be the soldiers of the future... but such projects have risks. Sarge's job was to take six hardass convicted killers from death row and train them for a mission... "FISHER Sir? What about the mission? CHARTERS It wasn't about the mission, Major. The Chronos Project is about results. We take six people. We erase their past and give them new identities. We make them think they are who we want them to be. We train them and send them on a mission. Our objective is to train people who will work together. Major, the military is suffering severe cutbacks. The future army will be small units who we can send out and ensure any objective will be carried out and that the soldiers will survive. Fisher looks at the screen. FISHER You're going to let them die? CHARTERS They are already dead, Major. FISHER But, Sir... The training... Can't we just reset them? CHARTERS We can... FISHER They are human beings... CHARTERS They are.. were.. what we made them. FISHER What if they had known... that we were controlling them? Perhaps things would have been different. CHARTERS In time we will have soldiers who will know exactly what is happening to them, just as you and I know. But that wasn't the point of the exercise."

The Winter Blade (The Harbinger Relics Trilogy Book 1), by J. D. Begley

About the Author J. D. Begley was born and raised in Southern California, USA. He became an avid reader at an early age, consuming such heavy works of fiction such as The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Frank Herbert's Dune at the age of 12. As he got older, he continued to read and he discovered pen-and-paper role-playing games, most notably Dungeons and Dragons. Soon he found himself in the role of the dungeon master, narrating adventures for his friends. He had essentially become a storyteller of sorts. Always a daydreamer, weaving stories in his own mind, J. D. vowed he would one day become a novelist. Fate would demand that he travel a long road and experience much of life until a Muse whispered in his ear: 'Now is the time.' And so it was.

Things are a bit too quick, the conversation a bit youthful and maybe a bit stilted, but a Damn fine story and a great world to visit - I hope to read more soon - I am now "following" J.D. Begley's author page.. I really want to read more JD.

Willingham I am frequently nervous about reading a novelist's first efforts, but this book quickly sucked me in with it's engaging characters and storyline. I am looking forward to following Graven and his friends through their continued journey.

By Diamante Lavendar This book is a bit rough around the edges with some minor editing issues, but it was still a delightful story! It told a tale of two men, Graven and Tevlin, as they were stranded from their clan and were forced to travel through many lands and situations to be reunited with their people once again. The plot was well conceived and the characters were well developed. Though there were some issues as I stated above, this book was a very enjoyable journey into the lives of the main characters of the story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy! The imagination in the story was intriguing and the plot was fast paced and interesting after the first few chapters laid the groundwork of the things to come.If you enjoy reading fantasy, magic and epic battle intrigues, this book is for you!-Diamante Lavendar, author of The Secrets Of Yashire and Breaking The Silence

A risible struggle between love and subversion of the western genre, PIG IRON takes place in the desert town of Aqua Fría after the wells have run dry, where crazed townsfolk drink whiskey instead of water, priming their bodies, as well as their situation, for combustion. Myths are exploded, horses are treated with little respect, atheist preachers hurl Bible quotes without irony, and villains and heroes sweat booze as their time runs out. They have three days before they die of dehydration. Only three days to search for illusive treasure, right perceived wrongs, and battle murderous hallucinations. With a glossary of western terminology, real and imagined, this violent yarn is Deadwood meets A Clockwork Orange, with a shot of "wry."

Review

  • "A real, kind of bizarro-cinematic quality to it... I recommend Pig Iron for anyone who's into something a little different. Even if you don't like westerns. Hell, especially if you don't like westerns." -Liam Sweeny, Pulp Fire
  • "Pig Iron is an incredibly smart, literate, and entertaining novel that is written with a clear precision of words and a specific intent behind every syllable. It's far from the average western and, at times, a challenging read, but the ultimate payoff makes the effort more than worth it." -Tim Potter, The Horror Review
  • "What the hell is Pig Iron? A highly imaginative, highly original, highly fantastical western that is, at its best, a lot of fun. Recommended." -Brian Lindenmuth, Do Some Damage

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Be branded by PIG IRON. By Jarrid Deaton David James Keaton's PIG IRON is a western novel unlike any other that has crawled past lizards and tumbleweeds to end up on your doorstep. This book, it's like BLOOD MERIDIAN infused with the artistic sensibilities of Richard Stanley's HARDWARE and DUST DEVIL. It's a violent, hallucinogenic quest for liquid and/or salvation in a world where everyone is on the verge of death and the precipice of murder. It never overstays its welcome with the plot pulled tight and the story moving forward at the pace of a singed stallion. Read it. Let the words of PIG IRON be branded upon your brain.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Far From the Average Western, In All the Best Ways By Timothy S Potter A town in the desert is said to exist as long as there are still horses living there. So what happens if the last horse in town has been shot dead with a hole through its head but still walks?Pigiron, the second novel from David James Keaton, author of The Last Projector, is the kind of novel that reviewers both love and fear. Love, because it’s a fantastic novel and a joy to read, and fear, because it’s a unique, bizarre novel that is difficult to describe. In the most simple terms, Pigiron is a good versus evil western, set in the town of Agua Fria, a place on the very edge of oblivion as the wells have run dry and water is nowhere to be found. The story builds through the town’s decline to an ultimate showdown in a nearly deserted place, delirious with thirst and three days without water and three weeks to the nearest well. The main characters are archetypical with hero, The Ranger, and the villain, Red. Red is a horse killing gang leader and The Ranger is a lawman who has dedicated himself to bring Red down. They share a complicated history that snakes back through the decades into family lore and the city of Bisbee. Red rides a stolen horse that he shot through the head, a dead horse with a hole in its head that kids can throw a rock clean through, a horse that still walks as though it was still alive. The Ranger is a lawman who can’t pull the trigger on a gun without having it explode in his hand. He was raised by a father with an anachronistic collection of misassembled guns that function better as a calender than they do as firearms. The novel is peppered with bible recitations and punctuated with song lyrics. The songs create a soundtrack in the reader’s head to the point that it’s easy to hear Johnny Cash’s signature baritone reverberate through the pages. The bible passages are mainly delivered by The Preacher, whose sanity slips further and further into question as the town runs dry. No matter how hard he tries to get rid of it, the New Testament keeps popping up and The Preacher keeps quoting it.Agua Fria’s population dwindles to Red and his gang and The Ranger and his family as the water runs dry and is replaced by blood and whiskey. The story builds to a violent showdown between Red and The Ranger, a clear outcome by ambiguous means, as the town is engulfed in cleansing flames. Pigiron is an incredibly smart, literate and entertaining novel that is written with a clear precision of words and a specific intent behind every syllable. It’s far from the average western and, at times, a challenging read, but the ultimate payoff makes the effort more than worth it.

If you were to novelize some of the best spaghetti westerns By Travis If you were to novelize some of the best spaghetti westerns...then throw in a dose of 80s supernatural weirdness and liberally spread the absurd all over it and you get Pig Iron. This...This book has literally everything you could want in a story. It's never boring it's never slow and it never leaves you confused....okay it does leave you confused occasionally BUT keaton resolves it...always...so if you like westerns and you like weird...no scratch that. If you like well written GOOD STORIES...then absolutely buy this book...then buy another one for your friend.

By Tim Williams Even though I was featured in the 2007 version of this book I have to admit that recent editions have been disappointing. There aren't many new sources to send your promotional materials and queries to. The ones who remain in the book are just regurgitated entries from previous years. Perhaps it's time for Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market to call it a day and cease publication. Either that or commit to a complete reboot with all new entries. As a freelancer with over 30 years worth of experience I have to say this book has fallen upon some hard times.

I bought it in part because they promise free access to their web resource, so when it arrived I eagerly went online to sign up. The resources they tout in the book include supposed samples of designer contacts. Well let me tell you there is absolutely nothing of the sort on their website at all! False advertisement at its worst. When I contacted customer support I received no reply! The book itself is just a regurgitated version of the old editions. Don't waste your money! Better go and self promote on FB. You will get more business than from reading this book.

Before Captain Jack Sparro and The Pirates of the Caribbean, there were Treasure Island and Kidnapped. Two novels of derring-do and adventure among pirates on the high seas. Thrill with our young heroes as they swashbuckle through one adventure after another. Collected here together are the two books that all other pirate adventures are measured against.

That said, I love the Classic Start series as a mother who believes in introducing my children to the classics from a very early age. I began using the series with my daughter when she was five. We have read Black Beauty, The Little Princess, Heidi, and Pollyanna to name a few, so I am very familiar with the content of the series, and I keep coming back for more.My son just turned six. There is no way that he would be able to sit through nor understand the original, but with this abridged version, he not only becomes familiar with the story, he falls in love with it as well. We began reading Treasure Island last night, and he begged for more and more. Finally, after six chapters I insisted that I needed to read to his older sister. While I did, this little kindegartner slugged through another chapter, struggling over every word to try to get more of the story. I couldn't have been more thrilled; that is the love of reading and the love of good literature with which I am trying to bless my children.Classic Starts are a fantastic way to begin, in my opinion. I see no difference between a beginning pianist first learning an easy version of a classical piano concerto and a young reader first introduced to an abridged version of a classic that, in it's original form would be above both his context and vocabulary level. I am sure that when my son does encounter the original, and he will--I'll make sure of that--he will not only be more ready, he will be more excited to get the rest of the story, thanks to his familiarity with and fondness for Billy Bones, Jim, and Long John Silver. My thanks, Classic Starts.

By Bob Hoskins Please note: Treasure IslandThis title is heavily abridged and aimed at children but, the Amazon title doesn't tell you this. From the inside cover of the book:"This Great classic for Children by Dalmation press has been carefully condensed and adapted from the original version ... We kept the well-known phrases for you. We kept the author's style. And we kept the important imagery and heart of the tale."With its large font and many illustrations the book comes out to 181 pages; whereas, the Sterling Classic unabridged with its regular sized font and no illustrations comes out to 232 pages. This gives an indication of how condensed this version is.This one has its place as a kids version and should be clearly marked as such.

Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, created a rich story of adventure and treachery on the high seas all seen through the eyes of a boy named Jim Hawkins. Jim starts off as the son of tavern owners in a humble little port village. When an old seaman stays at the tavern, trouble soon follows him in the form of a pirate crew seeking revenge. I will not give away any more specific plot points, but events move forward to a great treasure hunt, treachery, and a surprisingly engaging story for adults as well as children.Jim Hawkins is the hero of the story and he's a good lad with a stout heart. Long John Silver is the real star, however, and his character is a fascinating character study in moral ambiguity... or perhaps a study in amoral perfection. The pirate language is good and thick but this edition has plenty of notes to help you decipher some of the references that have become too obscure for today's readers. The plot moves along very briskly with no wasted scenes. In short, Treasure Island well deserves its status as a beloved classic. It's a story of suspense and adventure that can be enjoyed at a child's level, but has substance for adults as well. I would recommend without reserve it to virtually anyone.

Read Ebook California Dreams: The Art of Stanley Mouse, by Stanley "Mouse" Miller

The first comprehensive compendium of works by one of the groundbreaking pioneers of psychedelic poster art in the late ’60s, California Dreams is a career-spanning collection of 240 pieces pages created over more than five decades of nonstop artistic inspiration. Stanley Mouse is, of course, best known for the eye-popping and iconic posters, album covers and T-shirt designs he—often in collaboration with Alton Kelley—made during the hey-day of San Francisco’s counterculture renaissance and well into the 1970s. His influential work during that era captured the color, fun, mystery, passion and creatively liberating experimentalism of those tumultuous times. But this book also explores other sides of Mouse’s art, as well. Before taking Haight-Ashbury by storm, Mouse enjoyed tremendous success in his native Detroit detailing hot rods and airbrushing shirts and posters with whimsical drawings and paintings of crazy monsters and extreme cars. And more recently, in addition to satisfying ongoing demand for music-related commissions, Mouse has delved deeply into fine art, painting vivid landscapes and wonderfully evocative figurative pieces. Many of the works here have never been published before, and an added bonus is the inclusion of early versions of several of Mouse’s best-known pieces, and a glimpse into his personal

California Dreams: The Art of Stanley Mouse, by Stanley "Mouse" Miller

Review "Stanley Mouse was one of the most important and beloved [among the poster artists of the 60s]; his work today is considered seminal. This 224-page hardcover collection reproduces all of Mouse’s most famous works of the era...But the book, with text by Blair Jackson, goes beyond that era, charting Mouse’s growth from the pre-ballroom days into the ‘70s, ‘80s and the present, his talent now often funneled into more traditional but no less striking and intriguing oil paintings."—Relix

About the Author Stanley "Mouse" Miller was the son of a Disney animator and grew up doing hot-rod art in Detroit. Mouse had a natural feel for the organic lines of Art Nouveau as well as a hand that drew the art seemingly of its own volition. Upon moving to San Francisco, he teamed up with Alton Kelley to form the renowned "Mouse and Kelley." Many of their posters remain enduring symbols of the sixties counterculture. His art is displayed in numerous museums around the world including The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Tokyo Museum Of Modern Art, The Louvre in Paris as well as the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Mouse is still actively painting and he lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Great history and art from his early days to the present. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area I was lucky enough to have been influenced by Mouse during the entire 60's. From his hot rod monster T-shirt art that grabbed me in the early part of that decade all the way through the late 60's and his psychedelic poster art of the concerts I attended. This is a must have for anyone who loves art. He is still painting and it is worth it to experience the art of such a great artist.

A couple of Mouse's iconic Family Dog posters are, unfortunately, printed with way too much color saturation, ruining the subtle original colors of the posters. Such as FD-45, one of Mouse & Kelley's most beautiful designs. But overall, this is a very nice book. With interesting essays and very thorough history and biography of Stanley Mouse.TOO BAD, however, that Amazon's shipping personnel don't seem to get it when packing fine art books. Or books of any kind for that matter.BEWARE. If you order this book, expect it to be thrown into a large box, completely unprotected, free to slide and bounce around inside the box. My copy was ruined and I had to tell them to ship another one. Will it arrive more carefully packed than the first one? We'll see.Amazon should really re-think their book packing procedures. What a waste of resources, and sad to treat such a nice book like that.

Three of them are born at once. Some say they are gifted - Chosen - by the gods. Others say they are so aberrant even the gods cannot stop them from existing. Three of them living at once is unprecedented... and dreaded. Aleena is a gifted warrior who only wants the world to leave her alone. Anlon is an equally gifted warrior who wants the world under his boot. Baezha is a gifted witch whose intentions are unknown, even to her. Both Aleena and Anlon are skilled, proud and jealous. Their rivalry is inevitable, yet Aleena knows Anlon is a brother in addition to a rival. Jealousy, mercy, forgiveness and vengeance threaten to consume all she loves. Yet what of the third Chosen, Baezha, a powerful sorceress quietly watching the other two? And will the gathering of this triad result in balancing the equation into order or unbalancing it into further madness?

Triad (Sisters of the Storm Book 1), by Guy Estes

Review "Overall, Triad (Sisters of the Storm, Book 1) by Guy Estes is a fantasy fiction where the world building is complex enough to interest fantasy fans without being overwhelming. The central characters are sufficiently fleshed out." -Lit Amri, Readersfavorite.com

His children are the seventh generation of his family to grow up on the place, which was occupied by Union troops during the Civil War. He has a BA in social studies education and an MA in European history. His day job is an instructor at a small safety consultation company. He taught public school for three years and, as a result, no longer fears hell.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The story is essentially good versus evil By Timothy Stead Triad is essentially the story of Aleena Kurrin, a blacksmith's daughter born with a magical gift for mayhem. She cuts her teeth killing slavers who are, truth be told, carboard cutouts of evil. They are so unredeemed that they lack any semblance of character, and killing them seems a kindness to the plot and reader alike. It does seem to trouble Aleena, however. She agonises over her deeds enough to get herself into trouble and coming to terms with what she is - that is really the true start of this tale. With the introduction of a second indomitable warrior, Anlon, the story picks up. Anlon faces similar problems and temptations to Aleena, but solves them in a different way, embracing the dark side, and it is the relationship between these two that gives Triad its strength. The story is essentially good versus evil, and evil is equated to weakness of character. The battles, and there are many, are rendered in a graphic manner with gouts of blood, splitting skulls and spilled entrails, though somehow there is a lack of feeling in them that reduced them to a mechanical account of slaughter. The middle and end sections of the tale were stronger than the beginning. In the end I did want to find out what happened to the characters. Anlon and Aleena are flesh and blood enough to hold the reader's interest, though the whole books seemed overwritten to a greater or lesser extent. This has all the hallmarks of a first book. It seems as though the writer was learning his trade as he went, and because of this the first hundred pages are a barrier of sorts between the reader and the story. It would be greatly improved if the author went back and rewrote them. The numerous quotes that adorn the chapter headings do not serve the story. It's almost as though they are trying to persuade you that there is more to the story than the story, and there isn't. The morality of the tale is quite simplistic. The quotes are unnecessary. There are a number of anachronistic phrases that jar - such as 'self-destruct mechanism', which frankly sounds more sci-fi than fantasy. In summary I think this book will be enjoyed by some. The plot is strong and coherent, the leading characters are well conceived, but the supporting cast and the lack of eloquence in the writing rob it of the impact it might have had.

The combination of the three form a triad that can either be something great or create chaos By Frank Scozzari Warriors and sorcerers compete in TRIAD, a compelling new dark fantasy novel by Guy Estes.Aleena, Anlon & Baezha are rivals; each hugely gifted and hugely flawed in character (though if you search hard enough you will find some redeeming qualities). The combination of the three form a triad that can either be something great or create chaos, the later of which seems more likely.Guy Estes weaves a battle-filled tale in an imaginary world that becomes vividly real, and bloody, as the pages turn. There is high adventure and deadly encounters—likened to an Xbox game come true. The intensity of the rivalry between the main characters builds with each chapter, bringing to a crescendo a slashing finale which leaves wondering what could be worse. First in the 'Sisters of the Storm' Book series, the author fills the reader’s imagination and leaves plenty of room for more in the next in the series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A well-paced gladiatorial spectacle By JayG As a traditional fantasy hack-and-slash, this is well written, fast-paced fayre. The central characters are well rounded, the story is thoughtfully structured and it builds towards a strong denouement. The setting is complex and believable - the townsfolk, the different nations and their respective mythologies - and the scenes with the protagonist's family and school teacher are especially well realised. The love and tender warmth of Aleena's family are convincingly depicted and they work well within the overall structure because they provide some much-needed respite from the many 'meat grinder' episodes that occur throughout the novel. Bloodbaths aren't really my thing but the visceral descriptions are likely to impress and entertain all those lovers of sword-swinging adventure who like to follow the choreography of each fight; to know where every blow lands and with what effect. The reader is certainly granted a front row seat for this bloody, gladiatorial spectacle.Where, for me, Triad didn't work quite so well was with respect to its philosophical aspirations. In part, it seeks to present itself as an examination of the ethical aspects of killing but, for me, the use of two-dimensional enemies (such as the unrelentingly evil slaver-rapists) made the book's moral analyses difficult to apply to the real world. Seeking to add a bit of depth to the fantasy genre is a very laudable thing - and full points here for making the attempt - but I wasn't comfortable that this story sometimes seemed to want to raise moral questions and then also to answer them on the reader's behalf. However, this is to overstate a personal niggle with a novel that many readers will surely enjoy. There is no such two-dimensionality to the central characters and the primary nemesis is generally believable, delivered with a back-story in which it is possible to trace the origins of his fall. This complexity - the understanding of his conflicting motivations and his underlying, flawed humanity - makes the final showdown that much more meaningful and compelling. The novel is very readable and well presented and the fact that that it leaves room for a sequel will come as welcome news to many fans of guts-and-all swords and sorcery.

Review

LONGLISTED 2015 – Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction“Exhilarating, harrowing…. The language leaps off the page…. It is breathless, emotionally relentless, racked by violence but buoyed by Ice Cream’s spirited defiance…. After the dust settles and the final page is savoured…we are left with a sigh, and a thrill. We are left bidding goodbye to a spirited heroine we’ve come to know and love so well, and the possibilities for her future play out long in the mind.” —Winnipeg Free Press “A resonant epic.... What sets The Country of Ice Cream Star apart...is the extraordinary, blistering insistence of its language.... Potent, stimulating and cathartic.... By the last page I was emotionally battered but euphoric: the book had held me so effectively hostage that I felt I had Stockholm syndrome.” —Liz Jensen, The Guardian “Sandra Newman has created a language for Ice Cream Star that is unique, both broken down and rapturous, full of powerful feeling as well as laconic toughness, and flashing with gorgeous detail.  This is a brilliantly plausible dystopia, a thrilling adventure and altogether an amazing book.” —Adam Foulds, Man Booker Prize–nominated author of The Quickening Maze  “Ice Cream Star is the novel I’ve been waiting for: the brains and probing intelligence of the best speculative fiction, boosted by the passion, heart and energy that only a brilliant heroine can provide. In a bland world, flattened out by dystopian misery and needling pessimism, Ice Cream Star illuminates the reading experience with linguistic brilliance, stylistic flair and pulsing rhythm, creating a fictional world just as diverse, varied and exciting as our own. The imagination and artistry are immense.” —Bidisha “What an astonishing achievement...I can’t remember when I last read something so original or sophisticated or emotionally engaging or so breathtakingly ambitious.” —Kate Atkinson, author of Life After Life “Wonderfully inventive, The Country of Ice Cream Star pulls you into a world of betrayal, loyalty, desire and war. Ice Cream Star is a glorious, flawed heroine, and Newman’s writing about sexuality—its threat, and its power—is astonishing.” —Kamila Shamsie “It’s not very often someone comes along and really does something new and original with the English language, but Sandra Newman has done just that. My garden is overgrown, my bills have not been paid, and I’ve missed three deadlines, all because of this book. The Country of Ice Cream Star is a beautifully crafted masterpiece. There is not a word out of place; there is not a detail that is unnecessary. It is truly amazing.” —Benjamin Zephaniah

From the Hardcover edition.

From the Back Cover

In the ruins of a future America, fifteen-year-old Ice Cream Star and her nomadic tribe live off the detritus of a fallen civilization. Theirs is a world of children; before reaching the age of twenty, they all die of a disease they call Posies—a plague that has killed for generations.

When her brother begins showing signs of the disease, Ice Cream Star sets off to find a cure. Led by a captured prisoner who becomes her devoted protector and friend, she travels hundreds of miles across treacherous territory, fighting to protect the only world she has ever known.

Written in a lyrical, inventive patois, The Country of Ice Cream Star is a postapocalyptic literary epic as imaginative as The Passage and as ambitious as Cloud Atlas. This is a breathtaking work from a writer of rare and unconventional talent.

“Builds towards a powerful, horrifying, and beautifully written climax, one that’s epic in scope but also feels intensely personal.” —New York Times Book Review

“Blends elements of American history, popular culture, and political allegory with romance and thriller pacing. This suspenseful, provocative tale is The Hunger Games meets Lord of the Flies and The Walking Dead, only much, much better.” —Booklist

“Ice Cream’s language is as potent and earthy as Chaucerian vernacular. . . . One begins to think in this dialect; it is as sweet and addictive as Ice Cream herself.” —Globe and Mail (Toronto)

To quote Kate Atkinson - Astonishing By Luanne Ollivier I am invariably drawn to post-apocalyptic fiction, fascinated with an author's imagining of what life may be if the world as we know it ends. Sandra Newman's depiction of a ruined world is brilliant in her novel, The Country of Ice Cream Star. Ice Cream Star lives with the rest of the Sengles in the woods, scratching out a living by hunting or scavenging in 'evac' houses. Life is hard - and short. By the time a person reaches eighteen, the 'posies' set in - and death is inevitable. When a white man is flushed from an evac house, he brings the possibility of a cure, for he is old - at least thirty years. Ice is determined to find the cure to save her brother Driver, who has just turned eighteen, as well as the rest of her people. This was such an amazing book on so many levels. Newman's plotting is rich and wide and so very, very inventive. The story is told in first person narrative from Ice Cream Star's viewpoint. I was completely captured by her voice, her attitude, her fears, her strengths and so much more. I think readers will either choose to stay up late or put the book down after the first few chapters of The Country of Ice Cream Star. Newman's prose are amazingly original - it's language you will recognize, but words have changed and evolved over the course of the intervening years since the collapse of our time. From the back cover blurb: "My name be Ice Cream Fifteen Star. This be the tale of how I bring the cures to all the Nighted States, save every poory children, short for life. Is how a city die for selfish love, and rise from this same smallness. Be how the new America being, in wars against all hope - a county with no power in a world that hate its life. So been the faith I sworn, and it ain't evils in no world nor cruelties in no read hell can change the vally heart of Ice Cream Star." I enjoyed discovering the meanings of 'new' words and finding the remnants of the old tucked among them. I was able to imagine the words spoken aloud, the cadence and the rhythm and patterns of the Sengle patois. The Country of Ice Cream Star would not be the same book told in everyday English. That being said, I can see it frustrating some readers - mores the pity. Factions of all sorts have sprung up in this new world and remembered faiths, traditions, societies and their mores have been bastardized. Newman's descriptions, dialogues and settings were so very vivid. And again, I loved finding the remnants of the past hidden in the rubble of this world. The action and tension is palpable as Ice races to find a cure before her brother succumbs. Newman also deftly explores Ice Cream Star's sexuality. I found myself drawn into the hunt for the cure, only climbing out when forced to. (Darn job gets in the way of serious reading time!) The Country of Ice Cream Star is an epic read with a unique hero, a brilliant plot, oodles of adventure and ingenious world building. I loved it. Who else did? Another of my favourite authors, Kate Atkinson, has a one word blurb on the front cover..."Astonishing.." Yep, that sums it up in one word.

The Country Of Ice Cream Star is masterfully written, but therein lies the problem. I have a love hate relationship with how this book is written. The book is entirely written in a pidgin english dialect (akin to ebonics) created by Newman. It took me a few chapters to warm up to the language and throughout the book I was still only guessing at the meanings of some words and phrases. The story follows heroin Ice Cream Star in her search for a cure for a sarcoma like disease to which all children parish before they turn 20. This is an epic type post-apocolyptic novel and is not by any means an easy read. The Country Of Ice Cream Star is Sandra Newman's third fictional novel and has the honour of being long listed for the 2015 Baileys Women's Prize For Fiction.I almost put this book down a few times in the beginning. The language has an extremely large learning curve. What I love most - can of beef-a-roni. I eat that cold. I eat beef-a-roni anyway. The person invented beef-a-roni, that person was a valuable genious.Although the dialect shows incredible talent by Sandra Newman, I found it detracted from the story. Rather than connecting with the characters I was struggling to understand what was happening at all. It made for slow reading. I love a book that requires thoughtful interpretation, but this was a little too much. Surprisingly though, as I pushed through the story and learned the dialect I found the language became a beautifully savage poetry.Wake from your death, can think, you will surprise. Can be, you guess this be some ghosted afterworld. Rise with unconfidence, take time convincing life be real. Then can expect, you tearful bratty, holler for your joy.Ice Cream Star's journey begins when her and her people (the Sengles) discover a man who is different than them, blond hair white skin, holed up in an abandoned house. Ice Cream first displays her incredible courage and strong morals when she prevents her people from killing this man and befriends him. Through this act she learns there could be a cure for the plague that prevents her people from living past 20 years of age. The story of her journey towards the cure thrusts us into a brutally violent world of racism, hatred, rape, slavery, suffering, and religious politics. And Crow only wonder, how no child surviving ever - how he live no sixteen years, when every day can be a gun, a moment's anger. Live these years, and still remain, unwanted, like a punishment. Crow condemn to stay in this world, naked from no covering earth, this world where no good child belong. The Country Of Ice Cream Star is not a gentle book. It is savage and bleak. However, Newman does a good job of describing these atrocities without being overly offensive. When I think about Ice Cream Star I see her as a shining light throughout the book. She is bull headed and courageous to the point of stupidity, but she has an extremely high set of morals that separate her from the rest of her world. To the other characters she is special, but she is humble and doesn't recognize the effect she has. This makes for a great heroine. As the story progresses we are introduced to a highly religious community. This is the part of the book I found to be a little unbelievable, disconnecting me from the story. The children are supposed to be around the ages of 16, 17, 18, but I kept picturing them as old men/women. They seemed excessively old beyond their years. There is an unlikely love story that occurs in the background throughout the book. Like the rest of this story though, this love story isn't tender. It is passionate and savage. Again I struggled to connect deeply to the "romance" in the book. I really wanted to be happy for Ice Cream Star and her man, but I was rooting for her to seek love elsewhere. There was one quote in the book that really brought to light the issues with today's world. In their old America, whites a bad religion, where they worship paper money. Was mally churches called banks, deciding all their laws. These whites live like diseases, all was...selfish.Which leads me to believe that through this book Newman tackled the dark side of humanity and how our future could be bleak if we don't change our ways. I may be reading into the story a little too much, but I tend to agree that we as a society need to take a close look at our consumeristic values and our blind eye towards the atrocities that fractional reserve lending are creating in our world.Although I think Sandra Newman is a brilliant author, I feel readers will struggle to finish this book. The dialect and the bleak story are tough to handle. But not all stories are happy and beautiful. If a reader does continue with the story I'm sure they will see the same poetry in Ice Cream Star's language I did.

By Bookreporter As an avid reader of young adult literature, I've read (possibly more than) my fair share of post-apocalyptic fiction. Zombies and asteroids are all well and good, but to me the most terrifying are novels like Emily St. John Mandel's STATION ELEVEN, Carla Buckley's THE THINGS THAT KEEP US HERE, and now Sandra Newman's THE COUNTRY OF ICE CREAM STAR. In all these books, the precipitating event is a seemingly simple but rampantly contagious virus that abruptly changes human life forever --- a scenario that is just plausible enough to be truly unsettling.THE COUNTRY OF ICE CREAM STAR takes place 85 years after a mysterious illness has wiped out much of the world's population. The virus appears to persist, however --- virtually no one survives past the age of 18 or 19 without succumbing to a deadly illness called "posey." The result, in the remnants of the United States, anyway, is a society ruled by teenagers, in which young people (all of whom have black skin) fight wars as children, are eligible to take on leadership positions shortly after they reach sexual maturity --- and then die a year or two later. The intensity of such a condensed life is something that is difficult to imagine, but fortunately Sandra Newman does so for us.Ice Cream Fifteen Star (each of the people in Ice Cream's tribe includes their age in their name) is one of those people poised to become a leader. Her older brother, Driver, is sergeant of the Sengle tribe in central Massachusetts, but when he begins to show symptoms of the posey, Ice Cream seizes control. Her Sengles --- to whom she is fiercely loyal --- are in a state of constant conflict and/or negotiation with several other area tribes, including the Lowells (known for their dedication to work and order), the Christings (a pious quasi-Christian sect that practices polygamy) and the Nat Mass Armies (a warlike group that keeps slaves). When Ice Cream encounters a white man (a "roo," as she calls him) and learns that he (named Pasha) may be as old as 30, she becomes intent on discovering the secret of his relative longevity and, eventually, to follow Pasha to what may be a cure for the disease that would otherwise kill not only Driver but, before too long, Ice Cream herself. Their journey takes them to New York City (which has been claimed by a Catholic sect focused on their cult of Mary) and Washington, DC, where a particularly militaristic tribe views the National Mall as sacred ground and has littered surrounding areas with countless land mines to protect these historic sites.Ice Cream is a fascinating character --- fearless, self-confident, politically savvy and brimming with bravado. She also is reluctant to give herself over to love even when she clearly feels it; as a potential leader of her people, she knows that the allegiances of her heart are every bit as fraught as any political alliances she might make.Although it's hardly the only reason to remember and appreciate THE COUNTRY OF ICE CREAM STAR, perhaps the most immediately distinctive aspect of the book is its novel use of language. As Russell Hoban did in his post-apocalyptic novel, RIDDLEY WALKER, Newman imagines not only how society would change in the wake of a cataclysmic event, but also how language would evolve --- in this case, quickly and drastically.Newman imagines a slightly different dialect for each of the societies she imagines; Ice Cream's language is a patois inspired in large part from the colloquial speech of present-day African Americans, but also taking as its inspiration the teenager's tendency to cut corners wherever possible. The result is a form of English that borrows from several other languages while preserving some rhythm and unexpected poetry of its own: "My foot know every hill and stumbling hollow of this walk. Know where the owl will hoo, and where the rusten bicycle been left. But now my townie woods become a temporary place, a picture where some past life been. I walk through memories gone."For many reasons, including both her singular voice and her personality, readers won't soon forget Ice Cream Fifteen Star.Reviewed by Norah Piehl.

By Brandie First, I would like to say that just coming off the Steel and Stone series this book was calm in comparison. This book seemed very centralized around two characters in particular with just a few others thrown in for extra color from time to time, but always at just the right moments. I like how the romantic interests got together in the beginning and stayed that way. It was a refreshing difference from the other YA novels where the two main loves won't get together because of this reason or that reason but are so angsty over how much they secretly love each other. While that usually makes for interesting reading, this was a nice change of pace for a moment.Secondly, the demons in this book have absolutely no other purpose other than to feed on human souls to make more demons. Our 2 heroes kick demon butt, but the whole entire novel is not dedicated to it. It's not just one stressful scene or battle after another. The demon encounters are spaced out and that was a nice chance of pace as well. And lastly, the bad guy in this book, Evan Parker, survived the destruction of the Home Office, so...I'm waiting patiently for the next book because I really want to see this creep get what's coming to him.Over all, a great read from a new author.

The author did a good job of developing the characters and plot making for a very exciting read. I'm looking forward to the next book to see how Remi and Jake deal with Evan Parker and the demons who appear to be smarter than previously thought.

One of the Huffington Post's Best Art Books of 2015"[Peaches] has teamed up with her longtime tour photographer Holger Talinski to look back at a brazen career that has captured the attention of outsider artists and massive pop stars alike, ranging from Michael Stipe to PJ Harvey to Iggy Pop...Along with Holger's uncompromising, often raw imagery, the book includes stories from artists who have championed Peaches's work over the years."--New York Times T Magazine"It takes a lot of grueling work to pull off what Peaches does so subversively night after night on tour and in theater productions. That's the takeaway from this revealing (and NSFW) photo book on the electro-pop provocateur, as seen through the lens of photographer Talinski and featuring essays by Michael Stipe, Yoko Ono, and Ellen Page."--Boston Globe"Electronic musician and performance artist Peaches has made a career out of pushing boundaries, and her new book is equally transgressive. Photographer Holger Talinski captures the artist onstage and off in the outrageous costumes that have been a performance signature for her, and in quieter moments away from the strobe lights."--San Francisco Chronicle"One flip through the glossy new monograph What Else Is In the Teaches of Peaches is all it takes to get absorbed into the post-punk wonderland of pop culture icon Peaches."--W Magazine"Peaches is an attitude and a sensibility....She's iconic, and her iconography is important."--The Globe and MailOne of Loud and Quiet Magazine's Best Books of 2015"The bare-all book shows Peaches on and off stage, focusing on her efforts to shatter gender stereotypes, promote sex positivity, and push the boundaries of art and performance."--Vice Magazine, The Creators Project"What Else Is in the Teaches of Peaches, a new book of photography, attempts to capture more: Peaches onstage, backstage, in her 30-boob breastplate, on the crapper, on a cross, passed out, convalescing, performing for Yoko Ono, curled up with family, recording with Iggy Pop. It's a groupie's delight."--SF Weekly"For Peaches fans, the collection offers glimpses into both the public and private life of the artist who put feminist electroclash on the map. Peaches led the way, not only for other underground electronic acts like Le Tigre, Ladytron, and Chicks on Speed, but also artists that went on to major mainstream success. Would M.I.A. exist without Peaches? Lady Gaga? In her current iteration, Miley Cyrus?...In the end, [What Else Is in the Teaches of Peaches] is a reminder that Peaches, the artist and the musician...forged a vibrant, genre-bending career that continues to throb with spirit, transgression, energy, and ambition."--KQED Arts"Perhaps what hits you most of all, maybe more than the striking costumes and occasional nudity, is how much fun Peaches' life appears to be. Less than halfway into the book, you start to trust the Peaches/Talinski collaborative union, and you somehow come to realise that it's all authentic, magic and reality. There's none of the staginess that you sometimes see in photo books of pop stars, particularly those who are led around by their egos."--PopMattersThis volume presents a mesmerizing collection of Holger Talinski's evocative and sometimes erotic photos of transgressive musical icon Peaches, on and off stage, with accompanying text by Peaches, Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), Yoko Ono, and the actress Ellen Page, best known for her lead role in the film Juno, which garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

What Else Is in the Teaches of Peaches, by Peaches

Review "Laid bare in an intimate set of photos captured between 2009 and 2014, alongside commentaries from Ellen Page, Yoko Ono and REM's Michael Stipe, the new photo book shows Peaches at her most vulnerable...We see her as a daughter, a sister, a loyal friend, a Grace Jones fan, an international performer, and, most importantly, a real-life human being--something fans aren't often privy to beyond her larger-than-life performance persona."--Dazed and Confused Magazine"Talinski's pictures of the Canadian electro assassin offer an insight into the fun, chaos, hard work, rock 'n' roll, theatre and artistry that goes into presenting Peaches on the stage and to the world....The dazzling images collected in the book range from the intimate to the epic and are accompanied by written pieces by collaborators and admirers ranging from Michael Stipe to Yoko Ono."--Loud and Quiet Magazine"What Else is in the Teaches of Peaches, reveals an artist with a vision and a photographer with full access. The dazzling images collected in the book range from the intimate to the epic and are accompanied by written pieces by collaborators and admirers ranging from Michael Stipe to Yoko Ono."--Loud and Quiet Magazine, Best Books of 2015"These last years between albums are documented beautifully in the new book What Else Is In The Teaches Of Peaches, published in June via Akashic Books, a collection of Holger Talinski's photos from at home and on the road, on-stage and behind-the-scenes."--Cashbox Magazine"Without Peaches, it follows that we wouldn’t have seen the fruits of the feminist hero’s success. This is an artist that has sown seeds. Doing her confrontational flag-waving thing--using sexuality and the female form to subvert patriarchal values--since the 1990s, the Canadian artist born Merrill Beth Nisker has paved the way for the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears (in her later incarnations) and Miley Cyrus, all of whom owe a debt to the badass electroclash icon."--The Girls Are"Who loves iconoclastic musician and inimitable performance artist, Peaches? Basically everyone. Especially if everyone includes Yoko Ono, R.E.M front man, Michael Stipe, and actress, Ellen Page--all of who wrote an essay for her heady photography book, What Else is in the Teaches of Peaches, released in June."--PAPER"Photographer Holger Talinski presents a visceral stone from the centre of maverick electronica goddess, Peaches. This is largely behind the scenes, image-based representation--with contributions also from Yoko Ono."--DJ Magazine"Whether she's caught in a frenzy, spitting blood onto a gig audience, slumped in near exhaustion in the show's aftermath, or hard at work preparing her next in-your-face project, Peaches is never less than completely honest....Adored by established stars and aspiring artists alike, Peaches is one of the most important figures in alternative pop culture today."--We Heart"What Else Is in the Teaches of Peaches serves up slices of life from a transgressive master...Like the 2000 single, the book is full of grit, sweat and dripping sexuality."--Orlando Weekly"The book is full of grit, sweat and dripping sexuality....From stressed out hotel shots to carnival stage shows, a performance of Yoko Ono's Cut Piece to a one-woman electro-rock opera Peaches Does Herself, the book is an extensive look into the life of a transgressive master....Like all good performance art, it's not an empty dance. In each frame, Peaches carries a fire in her eyes."--San Antonio Current"The photography collection...captures the more intimate moments of the boundary-pushing, gender-fucking art-punk goddess."--The Backlot"In all cases, the act of archiving seems to Peaches to be ahistorical. The best picture is the one not that places her in a context of her musical contemporaries, it is the one that seems to her a perfect form of an emotion she knew herself to be experiencing at the time. Her archive is a punk archive, one strung together of immersions and transgressions, not coherences."--The 405"The outrageous and provocative new book...presents [Peaches] as more than the onstage provocateur most know her to be; instead we see her at home with family, rehearsing, sprawled out backstage, exhausted from giving her fans the musical lunacy they crave."--Frontiers Magazine"Holger Talinski captures that essence of the vulnerable, unapologetic, fuck shame, fuck stereotypes performer with his images....Talinski is an appropriately unfussy photojournalist. His images capture the feel of a performance. He shoots from the stage and from the audience. He shows us the view from the stage and from the pit. He shows us the sweat, the fatigue of the work that goes into making art. Like Peaches, Talinski is unafraid to be honest, vulnerable, and not at all vogue."--Ink 19"Definitely give this literary and photographic glitter explosion a read!"--Meininger Hotels On The Move Magazine (Germany)"Shots of a white-mohawked Peaches backstage in a silvery jumpsuit with a huge protruding dildo or tricked out in freakshow makeup and giant wool shoulderpads are made all the more interesting through their juxtaposition with quiet images of an exhausted Peaches chatting on the phone in a soul-drainingly generic hotel room or crossing a suburban street with her wheelchair-bound sister. The book offers provocative visual musing on the differences between artists and their stage personae. It adds another layer of complexity to an underappreciated artist."--Passport Magazine"What Else Is in the Teaches of Peaches, [features] intimate candid photos from her life on and off stage and tribute essays from the likes of Ono, Michael Stipe, and Ellen Page."--The Stranger"Peaches is ferocious, relentless, sexy, confident, and gives all of herself to her audience...She is a person who inspires."--Ellen Page, actress, from the book"Peaches is an incredible artist...Thank you, Peaches, for adding a long and exciting life to performance art."--Yoko Ono, from the book"Peaches stands tall and she is fearless. That is my definition of a hero, heroine, progressive, icon--locked in, and ready to rumble."--Michael Stipe of R.E.M., from the book
