A delicate balance exists between humankind on Earth and the Coronians, the descendants of terrestrial scientists who were marooned aboard the space station Equinox. In exchange for raw materials crucial to expanding their off-world home, the Coronians provide precious space-based solar power to an Earth obscured by greenhouse gasses. But distrust runs deep between the two races, with each yearning for freedom from their mutual dependence yet both terrified of perishing without the other's help.
Now, their future rests in the hands of Ayla Novik, an itinerant smuggler desperate to survive the menacing world in which she plies her trade, and Luka Mance, a drug-addicted technician determined to save his planet and his people from deadly betrayal by their extraterrestrial cousins. When Ayla makes a devil's deal to take human hostages in a Coronian power play, her mission sparks a revolt that will force an ultimate confrontation between earthbound and space-born...deciding once and for all whether two races will rise to coexistence or collapse in devastation.

By Dave H "Equinox" by Christian Cantrell is a stirring and well researched story that was written with technology propeller heads in mind. While I loved the storyline I was really overwhelmed by the overwrought and tedious references to the technology aspects which is rife throughout the story. Cantrell is one of my favorite authors and I was taken aback a bit by my disappointment with this book which is why I rated it 3 stars!!!

I had a little more trouble getting into this installment, mainly because while it was obviously written in the same universe, it took a really long time to actually connect in any way with Containment. It is, like Containment, what I'd call a "techie" book, in that the technology and science of the world is explained in a lot of detail and really brought to life. Much like Containment, the male protagonist of the story is very well developed and well written. The important female characters, much like Cadie in the original story, seem far less well developed and two dimensional. I wasn't left feeling like I really knew them or had any insight into the motivations behind their actions. There were also some threads that just seemed to be dropped from the narrative without ceremony, leaving me wondering about the fate of some of the characters, I was left with the feeling the author just tired of them and didn't want to bother wrapping up their stories.

The story line begins in the usual (unfortunately) dystopian future but actual solutions arise. As the situation develops the solutions evolve. What begins as the protagonist's ennui and depression over his feeling of guilt at the loss of his wife and unborn child is transformed by the redemptive force of optimism and forgiveness, A really positive experience to read this wonderful book and I thank Mr. Cantrell for sharing it with us.
