A rip-roaring adventure that sucks you in fast By Geoffrey West From the dark backroom of a seedy bookshop to the dangerous wilds of a hostile jungle, this new ultra-English hero, Jack Preston, courts danger relentlessly, and is always half a step ahead of death. This racy story follows Jack as he is sucked into an adventure against his will, for the sole reason that he's forced into the most difficult situation of all: threats to the life of the woman he loves. This is a very fast-paced story, and the tension picks up fast and doesn't ever let go. There are chases underneath river beds, through waterfalls, sudden death lurking at every turn, tribes of murderous natives out to get him, while even amongst his allies is his greatest enemy of all, the one who's forcing him to do what he knows he really shouldn't. But what choice does he have?Jack Preston is a hero in the Lee-Child mould: someone strong, macho and fearless who never shies away from trouble and always wins a fight, an ex soldier who takes on dangerous 'projects' for a living, well aware that the odds will be stacked against him, but confident that he'll win through in the end. And he does. You'll like this book if you like lively adventure stories with a likeable, resourceful, tough and macho, yet cerebral type of hero, the kind of man who can handle a gun as proficiently as he can manipulate a delicate crumbling 600-year-old parchment. The kind of man that men admire, and women fall for. There are quite a few twists to keep you guessing, an arch-enemy you can hate, and a very desirable heroine, who gives as good as she gets.Looking forward to the next Jack Preston thriller. I'm eagerly anticipating his next adventures.

I enjoyed that novel for tasteful descriptions of milieu and well-rounded, fully developed characters. Although I don't usually read adventure stories, I was hoping to find similar world and character development because that is what I enjoy most about any story. The first chapter really pulls the reader in. We find Jack Preston, the protagonist, in a book store searching for a rare book. The author depicted this scene particularly well. It had that old, creepy, I'm in a bookstore but I'm on an adventure kind of feel. From here the action never really lets up. Jack's girlfriend gets kidnapped and the reader finds herself In the jungle alongside Jack who is forced to guide a madman to the most precious artifact of all. I'd say what it is but I don't want to spoil anything. Throughout, Jack is surrounded by danger, but always keeps a cool head.I thought that Jack was a well developed character for this type of story. I liked that he was tough but still tender towards his girlfriend, Abigail. He reminded me of Indiana Jones. After reading this, I'm still impressed by this author's ability to add setting descriptions so seamlessly. I always felt as if I could see what was going on without feeling like I was being told what was going on.The ending was very good and that is all I will say about that.Overall, I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading another adventure novel written by this author.Highly Recommended

The old, dusty bookshop, the creepy bookstore clerk & an adventurous antiquities collector. For a few chapters the suspense began to build & the reader wants to know, "What's in the book? What powers does it have? Who is the anonymous client that hired Jack? Who kidnapped his girlfriend?" Sadly after that, it fizzled. I was hoping for more of an Indiana Jones-esque type adventure; but what action there was, just kept repeating itself. The characters weren't all that interesting & were predictable & one dimensional. Unfortunately, the main protagonist wasn't that exciting. The ending gave me a "Huh?" kind of feeling & the book that was so important to find in the beginning had very little significance once it was found.I really wanted to like this book & was excited when I started reading; but in the end was disappointed.
