With the sound of snapping pine tops and tortured metal, a deer hunt becomes a rescue mission. Matt Hunter's choices quickly become life-and-death decisions as a barrage of life-changing events thrust him into a fast-paced, pause-resisting adventure as he fights killer storms, dangerous gangsters, DEA bureaucracy, and love for a seductive woman and pits all his skills and judgment against those who would just as soon see him dead. Tanya crashes into his life on a drug-filled plane, adding a beautiful, mysterious ingredient to a cauldron of action, danger, death, riches, and romance. A Russian crime boss strides onto the scene, alternately deadly and charming, depending on how his borsch is stirred. The action races across an ice-covered Michigan lake, disrupts Hunter's snowbound Upper Peninsula cabin, slices through the Gulf Stream on a yacht, and stalks tropical hills.

Olsen For a first effort book, Hunter's Choice by JC Hager kept me spellbound from the time I picked it up until I read the last two pages of acknowledgements. JC Hager has obviously done his homework and weaves detail into a logical thriller from start to finish. His hero is understated with a laugh out loud dry sense of humor. His heroine is sultry and keeps you wanting more. His story is logical and believable but keeps you on edge because you never quite know nor can you anticipate the next turn. I liked it and couldn't put it down. That's saying allot because I'm an avid reader of all the great adventure authors. Hager has quite a career in front of him and I can't wait to see what Matt Hunter gets into next.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Character to be reckoned with By J. Rust Matt Hunter is a new character to be reckoned with... A vastly resourceful wilderness native and uncommon mix of clever adversary, tough combatant, tender romantic. Adventure in the northwoods of Upper Michigan to the Florida Keys and beyond. The locales were well-described from the author's experiences. This is not just an "action-adventure" novel for the guys. It is good work by J.C. Hager. Jo Rust

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A master storyteller whose attention to detail insures the reader's rapt attention from beginning to end. By Midwest Book Review A good read is defined as a novel you simply can't put down from first page to last. "Hunter's Choice" by J. C. Hager is just such an action/adventure rollercoaster of a suspense thriller account of Matt Hunter, a man who survives killer storms, ruthless gangsters, and a DEA bureaucracy. Then there is Tanya Vega -- a lovely and seductive woman who slams into Matt's life along with a smuggler's plane full of drugs whose owner is a volatile, unpredictable, but always lethal Russian crime boss. This riveting novel is set in one of Michigan's Upper Peninsula ice-covered lakes where Matt's snow-bound cabin is to be found, continues on a 54-foot Hatteras yacht sailing the Gulf Stream, and continues along the Amber Coast hills of the Dominican Republic. Superbly crafted, "Hunter's Choice" documents Hager as a master storyteller whose attention to detail insures the reader's rapt attention from beginning to end.

The future looks bleak in Akaladia. The secret society of the Selected has successfully eradicated all folk born with a strong, latent Spark of Connection . . . but for a few exceptions. Determined to destroy any and all potential threats to his rule, the Great Master of the Selected has commanded his followers to hunt down and destroy all folk born with a strong, latent Spark of Connection who escaped Kyros Draksas’ program to quench the Kanazanda. The Adi’vardikhar has also ordered for the Selected to sow and spread chaos and terror upon the land, as the next step in his plan to bring all of Akaladia to heel. Oblivious to the Selected’s chilling plans, Earlyan Marnes has returned to the Desert Continent of Ocrecia, where he will find that things are about to change radically. Training as a warrior is about to come to an end, the Selected are closing in on Earlyan and his mentor, and the young warrior is about to face a stiff test of character in the shape of an enigmatic, mysterious, young beauty. Lúnembril Police Inspector Danowain Raksika is about to find out that his questionable actions to save the life of mighty Móira Vinard have done nothing other than turn him into a target of the Selected’s elite spies and assassins. Young Alsbeth Mattis has passed her Loyalty Trial as a member of the secret society of the Selected. There is little to celebrate, though, as Alsbeth’s actions have only led to an unbelievable set of events that might just bring powerful House Mattis to an end. Unbeknownst to all, a menace rises from the depths of the jungle, a threat to the whole world at large that will change the face of Akaladia in one searing, fleeting flash, as the Warriors of Balance come forth to fight the evil rule of the Hall of the Selected.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Strong Follow Up to Book One By Dean 4.5 StarsThe author has made definite strides since book one. I enjoyed the prior installment, but it was admittedly a good deal headier, thinking-man’s sci-fi reminiscent almost of Stanislaw Lem and the golden age of heady sci-fi, and more recently of Existence by David Brin. While I relish this sub-genre of sci-fi, it definitely restricts the size of the audience. I can see this second offering appealing to a much broader readership. As to overall structure, each chapter drives the story forward and there’s good overall plotting. On a copy-editing level, the author went with shorter paragraphs this time around, which should make for speedier reading, and again helps to enhance the experience. The only cautionary tale I have on a copy-editing level for readers is that the chapters remain quite long. If you’re coming off of reading thrillers and bestsellers, it’s quite the adjustment. On the other hand, for the fantasy genre, these long chapters and big books are somewhat de riguer. One need only thing of the R. R. Martin tomes, but less famous authors also come to mind. So set aside larger chunks of time for reading individual installments and you should be good to go.As to the storyline specifics, the resistance is mounting to the oppressive overlords and reigning family dynasties which maintain a strangle hold on the alien world economy and on their subjects’ minds, by any number of nefarious means. Availing themselves of a blend of high technology and old fashioned Zen master-like mind-control training (reminiscent of how the Jedi knights use the Force in Star Wars), the governing elite easily enslave planetary populaces ill-prepared to defend against them. The ruling families have used their accumulated wealth and power over the ages to continue to refine their subjugation of the masses to ensure they know their place. Needless to say, the political intrigue is rife with modern day analogues. The master’s training of his apprentice in this story was reminiscent of Star Wars, training him both to use the supernatural forces at his command, and giving him philosophical grounding in which contexts to best apply them, right alongside conventional weapons training. The Malleable blade that our hero will come to wield can change its length in response to the wielder’s thought. The Warriors of Balance (analogous to the Jedi knights in this tale) are trained to keep all aspects of consciousness in balance. When tending to the needs of the people, to shine light into darkness, but also to bring shade to areas which are under too much sunlight. If it isn’t immediately clear how to translate that metaphor when you first read it, it slowly becomes clear as you read on.Our hero comes up against enemies who wield hypnotrance, a “force”-like ability, again right out of Star Wars, that allows them to hypnotize any adversary. As a result he’s subjected to mind control training every bit as rigorous as his physical training. Despite all the Star Wars-like parallels (down to the Yoda-like master training his unruly and impatient apprentice), I appreciated the unique qualities of this writer’s franchise. He gives more time over to the romance elements, for one thing. And he takes pains to expose why the corrupt world is the way it is and how those who wield power maintain it. In short he’s able to do things in book form that a film franchise doesn’t have time for in the relatively short-story format of a ninety minute film. The plotting and scheming in this installment is matched by an increase in the amount of action over book one, as the resistance launches its initial sorties against a mysterious underground base governed by the ruling families. Again I can see this playing well to a broader audience. Unlike many middle book installments in a trilogy that tend to lag or feel merely transitional, this one makes the prior one feel like prologue. In line with the series’ ongoing evolution, I went with 4.5 stars on this review versus the 4 star review of the prior installment. If the author continues upping his game at this rate, not just the next installment in the series, but further books by this author will continue to warrant attention. Let me be quick to say though, so as not to be misleading, that this is a sci-fi and dark fantasy mashup. Purists need not enter. But for those who enjoy both genres, and don’t mind seeing them blended, this book gets a solid recommendation from this reviewer.

People are dead but others have taken their places as is tradition in the great houses where siblings murder each other in cold blood for the chance to be the leader of their house.Revenge is the name of the game and the people will get their justice. Our favorite hero, Earlyann, is no longer the inquisitive child. He has been training and is now ready for the real world and his first mission.Things change at warp speed in Akaladia and a lot of what you think turns out to be wrong. We are heading towards and epic showdown but what will the sides be? Who will win? This is a series that keeps you guessing at every turn. The writing is crisp and beautifully descriptive. I can picture each part of Akaladia in my mind and it’s a bleak image. I can love and hate a character at the same time. That’s what is so powerful about these books.Occasionally, the long paragraphs would make reading difficult but that is the only problem I had with this book. I can’t wait until the third book and the final confrontation for the soul of Akaladia.

The villains in the second book are both more twisted and more human, and the plot regularly slaps you through the face with something you weren't expecting. This book may be written in a manner that's both simple and subtly artistic, but the story itself is cunning.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. attn: edwardian mystery fans By chrisam Dr Thorndyke is one of the most fully realized characters in an era wherein detection fiction was the most popular genre. Certainly there were many imitators of Sherlock Holmes and a plethora of so-called psychic investigators. But the Doctor is unique; he is a forerunner of many of today's forensic sleuths. His methods are totally scientific and (on the surface) plodding and unexciting. However, once you get into him you will be hooked. This is a great bargain book in which to check him out. Also, his great cast of supporting characters, such as Jervis, Polton, and Inspector Badger. Get into the Doctor; you can thank me later for turning you on to him.

A Long Lonely Road Volume Four: Books Ten Through Twelve (Volume 4), by TJ Reeder

About the Author I learned to read in the first grade, and that was about the only thing I did learn in school. I couldn't stop reading and just let the rest roll over me. Got booted out of school and just to show them I joined the Marines at 17. I always admired that some folks could write a book. I mean think about it- I love to read, live to read, but to write a book? Nah, this is magic! It takes many years of schooling to be able to write a book, and God knows I sure never had that. I got my GED because the First Sergeant in my last unit made me go take the test (the other option was death so..) I guess that day they graded on a big curve 'cause I passed somehow. Anyway, one day with no planning, I started writing this story, I know it reads like an uneducated fool wrote it and God knows one did! I wrote it like I talk and think- I really don't even know when to use a period or a comma, but I figger anybody can tell a story and so I did. I liked it when I wrote it, and I still like it. I have places where it still makes me laugh out loud, and places where I get something in my eye, so I guess I did a fair job of it. Anyway, if you have got this far you now know a bit about the ol' man that wrote it. I hope you find a small bit of something in it that you enjoy. If so I am very happy because good or bad, I by God wrote a book!! And my 90 year old momma read it and really liked it. Made me proud.

Hunter was a man who could rip a tree trunk from the ground with his bare hands or tame the wildest stallion with his kind manner. Nobody west of the Pecos would have dared run afoul of the mighty frontiersman. But Pete Reeve didn't have the reputation of a dead shot because he relied on his common sense. Then Bull and Pete crossed paths, and townsfolk from Cheyenne to San Antonio braced for the battle.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Bull Hunter, easy does it By Twostory Max Brand writes great classic westerns and this is one of them. It's a tale of a big, strong but gentle man, Bull Hunter who means no harm. Bull learns life's lessons well as he travels away from his abusive relatives to enter the real world. Along the way he befriends a renowned gun fighter who takes him under his wing and trains him in the ways of a fast gun. Never losing his gentle manner and ways, Bull can't help but make new friends along his journey. But there are foes who want to end Bull's life. They find Bull a tough man to beat. The story glides along well with good characters and a sound connection between man and elements. This is one of the most enjoyable Max Brand tales I've read so far. Recommended, of course.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Review of the JOT Bible Life-Notes Journal in Black Genuine Leather. By Snyder's Soapbox Do you study your Bible? I don’t mean devotional reading. I mean, do you sit down with your Bible, a journal, Greek/Hebrew resources and some commentaries, to unpack God’s word? If you are a serious student of God’s word, you’ll love this journal. Pastors study to prepare for sermons, Teachers study to instruct, Evangelists study to make the gospel known, Apologists study to make reasonable arguments, Christians study to be discipled. As Christians we all should be studying God’s word. Out of the available tools we have at our disposal, recording our thoughts on paper is one of the most effective ways of revisiting them. Considering the above callings, it is very beneficial. As a student, I’m often frustrated with the journals available on the market today. They don’t open flat. You always are fighting the cover of the journal. They are small. You can’t fit all of your thoughts from the entire Bible in one journal. You end up with several unmatched journals floating around your house. It ruins the continuity. I also find that I lose them. If you are going to a few different places in your Bible during a lesson, you have to remember which journals you wrote in. You have to gather them and bring them with you. The covers are usually flimsy card paper or moleskin.I realize some of you might be wondering what the fuss is about. “Isn’t that why the invented wide margin Bibles?” Well, yes and no. Anyone who has used a wide margin Bible has run into the problem of not having ruled lines. This might not seem like a big problem to those of you who have been blessed with the “spiritual gift” of beautiful handwriting. (just kidding. I know that is not one of the gifts.) No ruled lines, is a real problem for me. My notes meander all over the margin, not to mention that there is never enough room for some of the most elementary notables to be notated :) While, wide margins have their place, they don’t fit the bill for some of us. Space is the next issue with wide margin Bibles. There is never enough blank space for notes. You can never seem to get all of what you are thinking down on the paper next to the verses you are meditating on.I often wonder what will happen to all of my journals? They are all disorganized, and haphazard. Will my kids toss them out after I’m gone? Will they know what is in them? I want to have my all of my ruminations in one volume, organized, durable, functional, and easily referenced. On more than a few occasions, I’ve wondered if that was too much to ask. After talking to several other Christian friends over the years, I found that I wasn’t alone. We just consigned ourselves to the notion that our notes would forever be a collage of our faith journeys.I’m glad to say that someone has finally remedied this malady. The JOT Bible Life-Notes is the perfect receptacle for your meditations, ruminations, and contemplations. It matches your Bible in looks and size. It is a fitting companion to bring to the pulpit with your trusty Bible. It looks like a Bible, but it isn’t. It matches the Bible book, chapter, and verse. For every verse of the Bible there are two ruled lines with the verse number next to them, printed on fine, acid free, highly opaque, 42 g.s.m. Bible paper! I mean what!? You’ve got to be kidding me! That is far superior to most paper used in Bible printing, and they have an entire journal made from it, sweeeeeeet! I don’t know if you can tell from the pictures, but I am a pencil masher. I tend to push pencils and pens through the page when I write. If I am writing on thin paper, fogehtaboutit… I hope you can tell from the pictures that this paper holds up to pencil quite well. I would recommend pencil, as you can go back and edit notes later on. We are always learning more, every time we read the Bible so sometimes you have to go back and add things to your notes or fix misunderstood verses. Pencil erases nicely from this paper without leaving the paper wounded. The printing of the lines and features of this journal is done in a consistent fashion. I haven’t noticed any breaks in the lines. The page edges are gold gilt. The cover is supposed to be genuine leather. I can’t place it though. It seems too nice to be pigskin leather, but it is tougher than other cowhide leather covers. Regardless, it is flexible and durable. It is a work of form and function. The binding is a smythe-sewn spine in a case bound cover. The spine of the JOT Bible Life-Notes is ornamented with five raised spine hubs. The perimeter is stitched. There is a presentation page in the front that includes a spot for you to write your contact information incase you lose your journal so that the person who finds it can get it back to you. There are three ribbon markers in, black, red, and blue. This thing is pretty much built like a quality Bible, but beefed up for note taking. Again, to be clear, THIS IS NOT A BIBLE, IT IS A JOURNAL!!! Don’t buy this thinking it is a Bible. I know it looks like one, but it isn’t.So just to recap the high points here; durable, useful, all your notes in one place, attractive, helpful, heirloom possibilities, preaching aid, study tool, memoirs from time with God’s word.To be honest there is only one drawback that comes to mind. It is a hefty tome, but if you know anything about book design, you’d know there are finite attributes that are interrelated. When you change one thing it affects the others. Using thick paper, and giving us room to write, necessitates a larger volume. It can’t be helped. I’d much rather have ample room along with function and form than have all form. This thing is meant for work and does not need to be forgiven for that. So if you are in the market for a high quality depository for all of your meditations instead of just a smattering of them, this is the journal for you. Give it a try and recommend it to your friends, I know I am.

What a wonderful idea to have all one's notes, thoughts, all in one place. A great companion to keep alongside God's Word, the Bible. Absolutely the best thing to come along in a very long time. Nice to know I won't run out of space and have to keep up with multiple journals/composition books.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The perfect journal for Bible notes By Randy A Brown I’ve always liked the idea of keeping my notes in a journal. The problem is journals are small and I end up having many different journals over time. I really want my notes in a single journal but there isn’t one large enough to hold notes for every book of the Bible. Until now. That’s what Bible Life-Notes from JOT Publishers is. A single volume designed specifically for notes on every single verse of the Bible.Cover and BindingThe cover is genuine leather. It has a pebbly grain that looks and feels great. This is the supplest genuine leather I’ve ever seen. The liner is paste-down vinyl. It’s the most flexible vinyl liner I’ve seen. It will even do yoga if I want it to. It’s sewn around the perimeter. It’s sewn and lies open anywhere I want it to. The text on the spine is gold and it has 5 spine ridges that give it an elegant look. Overall size is 6 5/8 x 9 5/8 x 2.PaperThe paper is 42gsm acid free. It has an ivory hue which is easy on the eyes. The edges are gold gilted. It’s extremely opaque. I’ve only written in it with mechanical pencil (I love the look of ink, but I prefer the mistakes in pencil). I don’t bare down hard when I write, but this didn’t leave any marks on the back side of the page when it would have in many Bibles that I’ve written in. It doesn’t show through much at all. This might be different in ink, but with pencil it’s amazing.LayoutThe layout is simple: ruled lines with a verse number at the start of every other line, giving you two lines per verse for notes. If you need more space than this you can continue your note on the pages at the end of the book. The lines are close together, about 1/8”, just slightly closer than college-ruled paper. I like lined pages that are closer to college rule than regular. I write small. These lines are perfect for my writing style. The lines give a writing space of 4 7/8” wide and 8 1/8” high. There’s a little room in the header and footer, and around ½” margins – both inside and outside. There is no shortage of writing space. The first line has the book name and chapter number. You can write a page summary or other note on this line. When there’s a new chapter, it skips a line and prints a line the same way it does the header. This looks great and sets the chapters apart without being disruptive to the layout. There is a page in the front to write your name, date, contact info, etc. There are 8 thick pages in the front and 8 in the back for more notes. There are several verses of Scripture from the NASB. A page in the front contains 1 Chronicles 16:9-11 and a page in the back contains Luke 15:4-6, John 15:1-5, Ephesians 1:17, and James 1:5.RibbonsWho puts ribbons in a journal? Who goes a step further and puts 3 thick ribbons in a journal? JOT does, that’s who. There are three thick ribbons in dark shades of black, red, and blue. I don’t think they’re Berisfords, but they do look great and add some serious style. They’re just long enough to pull to the corner and still have something to hold on to.Storage BoxI usually don’t mention the boxes that Bibles and books come in but… wow! This storage box is the thickest and sturdiest I’ve seen. It makes the boxes from Cambridge, Allan, TBS, and Schuyler feel thin (and they’re not really). I always keep my Bibles in their original boxes and a well-built storage box is something I appreciate.Life-Notes vs Wide Margin Bible vs JournalI love writing notes in a wide margin Bible but I can’t get enough information in the margins. Sure I can get a lot, but the notes have to share space with the Bible text. Also, I end up using a different Bible. For detailed notes the Life-Notes journal/notebook far outshines the other options. It doesn’t have to share space with the Bible text, so I have all of every page to write on. There’s more space per verse than any wide margin Bible I’ve ever seen. And at 1622 pages (not counting end pages) there’re more pages than any journal I’ve ever seen. It’s true that most of the pages are labeled for verses, but you don’t have to use them for that if you don’t want to, and there are around five pages after each book (single chapter books have 2) that you can write sermons, extended notes, lists, thoughts, commentary, sermon notes, definitions, outlines, references, etc. There’s another good reason to have your notes outside of your Bible: you can use any Bible you want and you still have your notes. I’ve written notes in a wide margin Bible and then decided I want a different Bible, but this means I have to rewrite my notes. I like to use different Bibles (a lot actually, but I can stop anytime I want. I just don’t want to. That’s all. Yeah. I’m telling myself that). You can write your notes in the journal just like you would next to the verses, and then pick up any Bible you want in any translation you want and not lose you notes because of the Bible you chose. Score. It’s also true you can get smaller journals, but you can’t get one large enough to hold notes for every verse in the Bible. You have to use multiple journals, which makes it difficult to find your notes and carry around. Also, buying individual journals adds up over time. This is easier to use.Life-Notes vs DigitalThis is the same argument as any printed journal vs digital. Some prefer to write by hand and feel the texture of paper and leather. Some love the touch and smell of printed books. The interaction of a printed journal can’t be duplicated by digital means. Handing a physical book with your notes in it down to your heirs will mean more to them when it’s done in your own handwriting (or even your dictation to someone else) than something that’s typed. Physical handwriting is more personal. Many feel that writing with a pencil or pen helps to improve their understanding and memorization of a text. How to Use itHere are a few ideas of how to use this journal:• Personal commentary• Personal journal• Notes for teaching• Notes for preaching• Create notes for your own study Bible• Create your own reference system• Compile commentary from other sources• Write insights from others• Raise questions for studyI’m creating my own commentary on the text. I’m actually writing this on my PC in detail, but in the journal I’m writing just the main points. It’s kind of like Twitter. There’s enough room for the meat. This forces me to decide what’s really important.Talking With the PublisherI’ve had several conversations with Fred from JOT. He has a great way of putting things. I enjoyed his passion and insights about this project and the value of writing in a journal by hand. I’m including some of his comments here (with his permission). It is your hand, your fingers and how they form words. The feel, smell and sight of a real book can never be replaced. After having a special book for a time and putting into it wisdom and thoughts that come from Gods’ love in such a personal way, it can bring on a smile just seeing it and picking it up. It becomes like an old faithful friend.I have noticed that people that really enjoy reading and studying have a love for paper. It is kind of like when you were a boy and played baseball. The glove made special memories. So I guess it is the young boy in us. I am happy with that thought. – Fred - JOTI love publishers that have a passion for what they’re publishing. That’s JOT.You can see pictures for this review on Bible Buying Guide .comI received this journal free for review. I was not required to give a positive review – only an honest review. My opinions are my own.

Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy, is the eldest son of William the Conqueror yet the two men spend much of their lives at odds with each other. Robert's disdain for his cruel father's obsession with power and William's impatience with his son's lack of focus drive them apart, despite Robert inheriting the Conqueror's prowess for military strategy and his physical courage. Only Queen Matilda, wife of William and mother of Robert and his brothers, is able to keep peace between them. But King William isn't stupid. He looks to his son's attractiveness to women to create advantageous political alliances. So he isn't pleased when Robert, instead of making a match among the nobility, takes up with a blonde stable girl, Morberga, and presents her as his lady at court. But Robert won't be told where to love and is appalled when he finds his new sweetheart, the raven-haired, fiery horsewoman he thought he'd encountered by chance, is a Welsh princess placed in his way by William scheming for a united Wales. William is also quick to deploy Robert's talents both on the battlefield and in the diplomatic tent to ensure the security of his domains against Scottish King Malcolm. Perhaps William forgets that the king's ward Edgar is a bosom pal of Robert's...and that Edgar has his own claim to the English throne. Impaired by his father's ambitions for a Norman empire stretching from Northumbria to Italy, Robert does his best to defend honour without compromising principles, and to appease his father without becoming his pawn. His friends and other relatives are a mixed blessing. In the murky world of medieval politics everyone is angling for themselves, and sometimes Robert de Belleme, uncle Bishop Odo and brother Henry are just as much a threat to Robert's safety as his enemies. This is a wide-ranging and carefully researched tale of love and war, empirical ambition and everyday life. It illuminates the life of a man whom history has ignored, a man who might - and should- have been king.

By Marsha Robert the Wayward Prince Book One: The Getting of Empire by Austin Hernon tells the tale of the not-so-well-known oldest son of William the Conqueror, Robert. This story of Robert begins in 1079, thirteen years after the Battle of Hastings and the Norman takeover of England. Robert, who was about 12 when his father conquered England is now aged 25 and is out and about practicing war games in the borderlands of France. He is there after another disagreement with his father. So begins the pattern of Robert's life. A life full of conflict, love, and adventures.Robert had a great many conflicts with his father William, many arising from Robert's way of ruling which disappoints and angers his sire. Robert excels at military campaigns and diplomacy which William takes full advantage of as in his dealings with Malcolm of Scotland. When William dies he leaves Normandy to Robert who becomes Duke and England to his second son, William Rufus. Robert and William Rufus get along for the most part but some conflicts do arise as when William Rufus thinks he can rule Normandy better than Robert. William Rufus will also make use of Robert's skill in warfare and diplomacy in certain of his dealings. Thrown into the mix is William the Conqueror's third son, Henry, who is left money but no land when William dies but will scheme for the land denied him. Throw in a great many rebellious Norman lords and Robert had his hands full. The novel covers all the conflicts Robert endured.Covered in the tale is Robert's loves, such as his first love Morberga and a Welsh Princess Tegwin, the mother of his two sons, Richard and William. Tegwin, a love of long standing, is made to suffer long separations from Robert as he tries to govern Normandy. While the story does contain some graphic language in the love scenes, one can feel for Robert and Tegwin enduring their separations and the mutual love and respect they have for each other. One adventure highlighted in the book is Robert's journey to meet Matilda of Canossa, Italy, a fascinating lady of history. We see the journey Robert and his mesnie have to endure and the friendship that develops between Robert and Matilda. Further adventures await Robert and the reader as Book Two: Robert Warrior of the Cross will be coming soon.If you are a reader who likes a long, adventurous story that covers a great span of time then this book is for you. Austin Hernon writes with authenticity of the time period. One can feel they are part of Prince Robert's mesnie as they attack their enemies or as they travel around Normandy, England, and Italy, so vivid are the descriptions. I greatly enjoyed reading Prince Robert's story and look forward to reading his continuing adventures in the Holy Land coming in Book Two. I leave you with a quote found at the beginning of the book by the author which so profoundly describes Robert and his life.Be certain good princes, that when you defy convention you should also write your own history- else those whom you did frighten or discomfort will gladly write it for you. Or worse, bury it

Fascinating adventure, historically credible with a strong central character By Georgina Faye A fascinating and gripping story based on fact about the Conqueror's overlooked eldest son. He managed to avoid inheriting the crown of England - he nearly killed his father by accident, and later didn't make it to his deathbed - and so the story of Robert Duke of Normandy is not well known. If this book is a guide, it deserves to be. Meticulously researched, this is convincing history, yet it provides the essentials of a successful novel: strong, intriguing characters and a suspenseful adventure story. Add in a few battles and a lot of sex and this is history like it never was in the classroom. Can't wait for Book 2, and Robert's adventures in the Crusades.Note to historians: I'm a history graduate and sometimes historical fiction even by the most popular authors makes me grind my teeth. This didn't. Relax and enjoy.

A Marine Infantry Officer confesses his lust for killing and fucking everything in sight, his desire to beat his boss's face in and frag the battalion staff, his willingness to risk Afghan civilians in order to save Marines, his burning desire to win a game of gay chicken at all costs, his personal mission to nail the combat reporter who joined his unit, his sexual arousal at the sight of ED (Enemy Death), and his inability to take serious things seriously; while planning and executing the last combat operation of his deployment in Afghanistan; a nighttime helicopter raid named, Operation Branding Iron Part 2.1A. (Continued from National Geographic's "Battlefield Afghanistan") This is undoubtedly the most honest and raw account of an Officer's thoughts and actions during combat that has ever been written. After publishing this book, Donny O'Malley's job options are now reduced to low level sales and day labor construction. It is still unclear how he ever made it out of the Marines without court martial. Senior officer's will slam him, military historians will be shocked, and all civilians will be 100% certain he's psychotic. Fortunately, the book is written for the opposite of those mentioned above. It’s written for Enlisted guys. Officers who are brave enough to read will either cry themselves to sleep, jerk themselves off to Donny's picture, or will ask their buddies to write them up for an award with V for having the moral courage to finish the book. "My moto boner is still raging strong and I read this book three days ago. I'm certain that my dick is going to explode, and I really don't care, because this book was that fucking good."-Marine I served with. "858-555-5555- Hey bro that's my wife's phone number. You can fuck her whenever you want, just wear a condom and try not to blow anywhere near the face. I understand mistakes happen, but do your best. Thanks for writing the book, I really needed that." -Marine I never served with "Just wanted to say that your book is cracking me up. I think the people on the subway think I'm nuts because I can't stop uncontrollably laughing. I think I crack up because I know your jabroni ass and know that the shit you write about that is going on in your head is true, no bullshit. You are completely fucked up, in the good way. If people were to question if you were making this up I could say that it's no bullshit because I spent enough time with you to know that you beat off 10 times a day. I slept above you on ship and heard you beating dick all the time. Fuck it, what man doesn't beat off constantly? It's raw and honest. Like you said, as professional as all of us try to be (officers especially) deep down we are fuckin animals, neanderthals who just love pussy and talking about sucking dick, in a gay way, and when we get the chance, killing bad guys. Anyone who denies that, other than maybe the Col, is a fuckin liar.......PS-your description of Major Dyce is spot on... fuckin moron. Someone should have blew him up." -Lieutenant I served with. A message from the author- This book is a reach-around to all enlisted, and a FUCK YOU to every Officer who has ever written a politically correct, full-of-shit, “I’m a great leader,” book about combat. Every single one of those fucking jerkoffs wrote a book for civilians that not a single enlisted guy ever gave two-shits about. The truth is that Marines love killing more than they love pussy; they fantasize about mowing down insurgents with a 240 on post while 70 virgins take turns blowing them. This is who we are, and I’m sick and tired of nerdy ass book writers hiding our reality from the public. Fuck the public, they’ll judge us and say we’re psychotic until they watch an ISIS beheading video, and then they'll beg us to come out of our cage to fight the bad guys. At which time we’ll head to the front line of evil and kill them all with a smile. Enjoy the read my brothers, this one's for you.

Embarrassing Confessions of a Marine Lieutenant: Operation Branding Iron 2.1A, by Donny O'Malley

Review "If Generation Kill had been written by Sterling Archer. I acknowledge that this work is in many ways a refraction of our own deployments. This is easily the only book on modern warfare in existence that is completely raw and open about the types of twisted thoughts that go through the minds of those asked to do the insane, under asinine conditions, while trying to keep from going completely mad. Those looking for a book on self-righteous heroism, or "patriotic" garble that will somehow justify what we had to do, look elsewhere. Rather, this is an expose on all of the gritty, raw, inappropriate, and downright raunchy thoughts that went through our minds constantly, yet we're too embarrassed to admit." "This is the real deal, and O'Malley is the platoon leader every grunt wants to have. He's the natural leader the brass hates, but the first one they look to when the sh*t hits the fan. As funny as it is, the ugly truth of suicide among combat vets comes through in a very sobering way. Thanks, "Lt. Dan", for holding the flank." - Enlisted Marine "This book is hands down one the best I have ever read regarding life in the Marine Corps, Combat, and Afghanistan. I laughed so hard it hurt on many occasions, and above all, this book is going to save lives. 22 US veterans a day kill themselves due to PTSD related issues. The author issues several calls to action for the reader, and the country, to work against this... There is NO doubt in my mind this book will save lives. If you are a veteran, know a veteran, are interested in war, combat, the Marine Corps, the military, or especially are a guy with combat experience, this book will change your life. Huge thanks to the Author for this work" - Enlisted Marine "On a serious note, I'm a USMC vet and have had some mental health issues not related to combat and on the day I read this book, I was on a bit of a downward swing. After reading it though, my mood was immediately lifted which I think was the intent of Donny's book." - Enlisted Marine "Mr. O'Malley does a fantastic job mixing in some honest to goodness humor to get this point across. I have absolutely no doubt that serving under Mr. O'Malley was indeed an experience of a lifetime. As a prior enlisted man, I would have been honored to go into battle with him because of his down-to-earth leadership style. I guarantee you Mr. O'Malley had the respect of this men. For most of the book, Mr. O'Malley uses sexually graphic self deprecating humor to get across his real message -- at least 22 veterans commit suicide everyday." - Enlisted Sailor "This book is an excellent window into the mind of a male in a combat zone. True, gritty, raw and hilarious. If you have ever been lucky enough to enjoy the thrills of a sexually deprived combat zone, this book will bring back memories of smashing off knuckle babies in a plywood Porta John and playing spades and gay chicken in between firefights." - Enlisted Marine "Donny O'Malley says what many officers think, but don't say (out loud). His deviant behavior and lack of decency gave me some of the most side-splitting fits of laughter in my life. And as a someone who has served (and continues to serve) through four combat deployments, I understand the importance of laughter during shared misery. His words will make you recoil in disgust, laugh your ass off, and give you a newfound respect for the men and women who put life and limb on the line. Contrary to what some will say, this book is life line to all service members everywhere suffering through wounds seen and unseen... As well as closeted, degenerate officers. Thanks Donny!" -Marine Officer

Complicit and Entirely Inappropriate yet Tender and Enduring By Mooster As much as I want to say "don't read this book", O'Malley's willingness to expose the male brain at war, with pure, unadulterated honesty shrouded in explicit s*xual delusion gives Embarrassing Confessions of A Marine Officer a unique and never before reading experience or perspective for the reader. It is a "first of its' kind" and I think, albeit, complicit and entirely inappropriate as a whole, O'Malley's end goal of helping those who have suffered the ugliness of war and subsequent suicide causalities, can and will benefit from the humor he intended his readers to enjoy through his complete transparency. He is a pioneer of sorts into the land of veteran suicides in his attempt to bring awareness and help to those in need. So for that reason, I can stand behind his first published achievement. I will also add that the "gay chicken" chapter had me laugh out loud several times and let it be noted that I found the need for male affection and companionship in such grisly environments somewhat tender and enduring. I'm looking forward to reading his blog and contributing to his organization.

Any grunt who has thrown lead down range can relate to this book, from edging on the verge of heat exhaustion while in the porta-potty to climaxing while slaying bodies in firefights. You'll be taken back with each flip of the page. It doesn't matter what grunt unit you've been in because everything written is so relatable that it will bring you right back. If you're easily offended or have never been to war than this book probably isn't for you.(Review edited because it contained too much profanity)D.S2/9 G Co Wpns Plt0331 (07-11)

THE WORLD DIED LONG AGO The world died long ago, leaving only a few here and there to rebuild. Their world had once been grand and magnificent, but too much was lost in the years after the time known as the Dying. Knowledge that had been gained over centuries disappeared from the world, lost when those who carried that knowledge died with it. The population has grown again over the last centuries, but the world has not regained its lost knowledge or former glory. A few things survive, here and there, and scholars seek to uncover more of their Ancients lost technology. But in the midst of that comes the threat of war with a rival nation. The latest in a long line of such wars for the Kingdom of Soulan.

To date I have read two of his novels and have been instantly "gripped" by the story, characters and wonderful writing of both - the surprising aspect is that neither of the books were my normal reading fare. This is a relatively long book that keeps the reader engrossed to the final page and beyond! I am waiting with baited breathe for the first sequel!Repeat - I don't normally read this type of novel. Out of all the post-apocalyptic survival fiction the long term (500 yrs post-"Dying Time") is definitely not my favorite, I'm more a short-term kind of person. Also I have little to no interest in "epic" or "alternate Earth" books. However, I have become absolutely hooked in finding out more of what happens to Parno (main character), Wo (sidekick), Stephanie (love interest) and the clan McLeod. The "wizard" Finn is an interesting character, one that I think was included both for fun and realism.READ THIS BOOK!!!! I think it will appeal to virtually everyone because the writing is exceptional. Yes there are minor editing errors here and there, as a bit of a perfectionist I noticed a few, however they will in no way spoil your enjoyment of the book.Just a final note - I am currently "registered" on only two author pages and I read an average of 300 books per year for the last 53yrs. I think N.C. Reed is about to become the third author I will actually "follow" on the net. READ THE BOOK!!!!

By Peter A strong start. This is a strong start to Mr. Reed’s fantasy trilogy. The book is set in the distant future with several references to the ancient past and its technical marvels. In fact, these take the place of magic in this novel, possibly a nod to Arthur C. Clarke’s famous saying, “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”.The plot follows the development of a wastrel prince into an inspirational leader; the book begins at a point where the main character is about to be kicked out of the capital for unspecified misdemeanors in the past. Parno McLeod is given a regiment of convicts and is tasked into turning them into soldiers; think Foreign Legion here. We follow his progress in this enterprise which ultimately results in a last stand defence of a strategic gap against an overwhelming force from a huge, aggressive Empire. This is a highly enjoyable read. There is no indication when the next book will be out in the author’s postscript but I do hope it will be soon.

What an outstanding novel written by an excellent author By richard s. harrison I thought Odd Billy Todd took the cake on novels but he has out done himself again. What an excellent novel with a gut busting story line, where this author comes up with these I do not know but will read all that they write. As one other reader has expressed the author has become one of my favorites of all times............As an old soldier who has fought on three continents, been led by real hero leaders as well as have lead men of the calibier written about in this particular novel is so real, so true, it brings back many memories and tears as well. This author has captured the true brotherhood of warriors asked to do the impossible, with little help except those who they are surrounded by, to fight, die and survive incomprehendable feats in time of war........This author has captured what few who enjoy freedom and understand, he brings the heartache, the trials and tribulations a soldier, sailor, marine and airman must endure so others can sleep at night in freedom in their own homes.I would urge all old veterans to pick up this book to read, they will experience joys, tears and heartache remember from their time as warriors. Freedom is expensive more in lives than dollars, but few understand this who enjoy it, this author will give those who have NOTseen the elephant some idea what it is like to give it all for those who do not know or understand...............I will waited with baited breathe for the next book Parno's Destiny and as this book will not be satisfied till I finish it...................Ric Harrison "currahee"

Finding Freedom invites students to follow America's journey toward finding freedom by examining multiple perspectives, conflicts, ideas, and challenges through seminal historical texts. This unit, developed by Vanderbilt University's Programs for Talented Youth and aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), features close readings of some of the most famous American political speeches from notable Americans, presidents, and minority voices. To sharpen historical thinking, students analyze arguments for freedom, examine dissenting perspectives, and reason through multiple viewpoints of historical issues through debates and interactive activities. To develop advanced literacy skills, students evaluate effective rhetorical appeals, claims, supporting evidence, and techniques that advance arguments. Students synthesize their learning by comparing speeches to each other, relating texts to contemporary issues of today, and making interdisciplinary connections. Lessons include close readings with text-dependent questions, choice-based differentiated products, rubrics, formative assessments, social studies content connections, and ELA tasks that require argument and explanatory writing. Ideal for pre-AP and honors courses, the unit features speeches from Patrick Henry, Frederick Douglass, Carrie Chapman Catt, and Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lincoln, Kennedy, Johnson, George W. Bush, Obama, and others.

By Sherrie Fair As a 6th grade ELA teacher in a magnet middle school, I found this book incredibly helpful in developing higher level thinking in the classroom. This book helps middle schoolers grapple with big concepts which promote in-depth Socratic discussions, helping to stretch and challenge students’ minds. Finding Freedom has appropriate depth/complexity embedded within class activities and assignments and is easily modified according to the learners in your classroom. The most exciting aspect of this book is the ability to use in conjunction with novel studies whose settings take place in specific time periods in our history. By using the lessons along with the text analysis wheels, I have found success teaching not only complex texts, but enhancing our social studies curriculum with these timeless speeches from our history. I highly recommend this book to ELA teachers of gifted and advanced learners, and also for middle school social studies.

Increase Critical Thinking By TeachToEducate As a Coordinator of Gifted Services, our teachers have found this book and the tools to be beneficial beyond Finding Freedom. Teachers can use the format, sample questions, and analytical tools to pattern the thinking of students and increase effectiveness of instruction. The utilization of universal themes and conceptual connections push students to grapple with the real world of past and present while strengthening ELA skills. There are many options and choices with each lesson. Critical thinking is not optional through these lessons. Everyone...students AND teacher...will be engaging in the critical thinking process. Definitely worth the struggle!
