By Raymond Benson This fabulous Young Adult novel mixes a Hitchcockian "man on the run across country" plot with Bond-like spy stuff, and it brilliantly succeeds. I'm convinced that Jeffrey Westhoff should perhaps write the "Young Bond" novels! For a debut novel, "The Boy Who Knew Too Much" is extraordinary. It moves at a brisk pace, it's got a great teenage character at its helm (and great female foil), and a twisty plot. The bad guys are all adults, of course, which sometimes makes for uncomfortable moments when they've got our hero in their clutches, but I guess that's par for the course with Young Bond, too. That aside, the book is suspenseful and a lot of fun, and perfectly fine reading for adults as well as "young" adults.

By Laura Just a few pages into "The Boy Who Knew Too Much," I was reminded of why I fell in love with reading when I was very young - I get to meet rich characters I wish I knew in real life and jump into their world. Westhoff's debut novel provides a rich opportunity to do just that! This book has everything a young (or old ) reader could want in a spy novel: imaginative intrigue, gadgets, chases, chilling danger, and of course, brains over brawn. It strikes a balance between a teen novel and spy adventure with just-right chemistry between both buddies and young love interests - in other words, it gets the adolescent thing right. The protagonist Brian is endearing and entertaining as he navigates a gamut of emotion, yet on the outside he remains an adolescent boy who doesn't want anyone to see him cry. Westhoff imbues him with insights which are age-appropriate but contain wisdom useful for any age. For example, Brian's admires fictional spy Foster Blake not only for the spy's myriad women or car chases, but for his ability to be "in control of his world." Likewise, the unintended partner-in-crime and Larissa is a strong female character in every sense. Her attractiveness is built in layers, a credit to both Brian's character and readers' intelligence. Further, she has great taste in music!Surprises are not telegraphed - Westhoff is deft at throwing readers a curve. Readers will find that while this is a YA novel, it is definitely not child's play. The surprises come in the form of very grown up action. Without playing spoiler, it can be noted that the book remains true to its spy fiction inspiration without watering it down.A fun side note: Pop culture references including colleges, sports franchises, punk rock legends and fictional characters, are woven seamlessly into the story, along with vivid geography lessons which fueled my desire to jump right in.No time is wasted as the plot twists and turns from the opening scenes of a common-place high school trip through to the the ending - which does not disappoint. What a terrific debut from an author who obviously knows his material ...and his readers.
