A few days before 9/11, a number of unidentified people invested heavily in the stocks of American and Untied Airlines and Transamerica Insurance. They bought “put options” in the belief that the stocks would drop in price. After the attack, those men made 22.7 million dollars. Fast forward to the present… A brilliant economist has been fired and disgraced by the EU. He is planning his revenge. He will buy “put options” on the Euro in anticipation of a fall in the currency, which he will guarantee by killing the three individuals most responsible for holding the EU together. The second half of the book is a pursuit through Europe of this madman by my protagonist, Paul Decker, and his counterpart, the beautiful Mossad agent, Alex Stern…a chase more intense that that of the Jackal stalking Charles De Gaulle.

Coleman The Euro Option opened my eyes to the number and degree of conspiracy theories that have been suggested over the years. The depth of research, the realism and implications were frightening. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it in two sessions. Then I couldn't sleep because the story kept reverberating in my mind.

Paul Decker's Assignments Move Overseas In This Action-Packed Political Tale By Dawn Dolly Webb Most of Jeffry Weiss's books following the character Paul Decker are based around America. But this book takes a turn and flies itself overseas, to Europe. Paul Decker is put in charge of chasing and finding a bitter madman who's determined to ruin the value of Euro currency. He's out to kill three of the major players in the Euro currency exchange rate, and Paul Decker may be the only person capable of stopping him. This book takes you on a bit of a hunt as Paul Decker is forced to venture across Europe to find and subdue the man who's trying to bring the currency of the continent down. The action of this book keeps you pushing along. It's kept at a good pace from about the third chapter in. The book does a good job of creating a history behind the storyline and really truly giving you a lot to think about and grasp as the story plays out.As with all of Jeffry Weiss's stories, there is a huge political undertone in this story. It forces you to think about the world's reliance on money and how one person, or a few small people, could make such a huge impact on the world's stability if they were to ever detromize a currency. This book takes you on a roller coaster. As always, this story of Paul Decker is extremely well written. If you haven't read the other stories featuring this modern American version of James Bond, I highly suggest looking into Jeffry's other works. You won't be disappointed. And if you're debating picking this book up- do it! It's worth the thought-provoking storyline and the action packed fun reading.

An interesting thriller that centers around an economist who was fired by the EU and eventually is chased through the Europe by Paul Decker and a female Mossad agent Alex Stern. He alone conspires to crash the value of the Euro by killing the three major important political figures. Exciting at every page, this was a thriller that has kept me intrigued the entire time, and I enjoyed the political commentary and the drama at high places. Very realistic and nicely envisioned. Well worth the read.

This is the first book in the Jimmy Starlight and the Galactic Crystal saga. It contains a story about a twelve-year old boy, Jimmy Starlight, who lives on Earth in a make-believe world, not of wizards and dragons, but of multiple dimensions and multiple universes, aliens, virtual-reality time travel, space portals and vortexes, anti-gravity technologies, and Celestial Guardians. The boy has a paternal connection to Planet Atlantis, located in another dimension in our solar system, and he is the subject of an Atlantean prophecy that is being fulfilled in this book and others about the Jimmy Starlight saga. This prophecy holds that a boy of Atlantean and Earthen descent will lead the Atlanteans to victory over their archenemy, the VARS, in the first quarter of the 21st century. It also predicts he will recover a long-lost Galactic Crystal and use it to overcome this enemy, and this victory will transform Planet Earth and bring it universal peace and harmony. After this transformation, this boy will lead the people from Atlantis and Earth jointly into the new frontier in the far reaches of the universe.

This is short and sweet, I especially liked the bit on Structure By Lia This is short and sweet, I especially liked the bit on Structure, but it was too short. I would have loved a more hands on approach in seeing how she outlines her own work. The book could've used more examples and isn't really all that specific on short romances, contrary to what the title suggests. It's a good starting point and if she'd put a bit more effort in it, it easily would've become 4 stars.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. well thought out By Rachel Del As an aspiring romance writer I have been reading plenty of romance novels and how to advice. Nina's book provided good advice with good examples. I will consulting her pages as I continue on with writing my novel.

By Gwyn Huff This book tied Vogler, Hauge and Truby studies into a simple "aha" moment of clarity and a chapter by chapter "of what should go where" . The latter part of the book was especially helpful. There are also supplemental materials that I just bought from her website at a very, very reasonable price. I got what I needed to tie up loose ends especially regarding romance and story. No theory, per say, just get 'it on the page for us pansters.Note: Follow up. I just bought the paperback. Sometimes I buy a kindle e-book but I need to dog ear and often share it with others on my kindle device. I've bought other "reference books" after a kindle purchase. It's a Master Class. I bought other Nina Harrington books on Kindle e-reads. This is the first paperback I went back for. It's worth it. No I don't know her and yes I'm just a regular customer/writer like you. Peace!

Markos Vamvakaris, born in 1905 in Syros was a pioneer of rebetiko, the urban folk music of Greece. The bouzouki was a disreputable instrument but he paved its path to glory. He spent many years, first as a stevedore in the port of Piraeus and then as a butcher in the slaughterhouse. During this time he fell in love with a tigress, his first wife, he learnt to smoke hashish and to play the 'sacred' instrument: 'I had a great passion. My life was all bouzouki. It took me over - but it also took me up in the world, way up ...' This is the first ever translation into English of the autobiography compiled by Angeliki Vellou Keil in 1972. It opens a window onto a time of extraordinary creativity in the history of Greek music, an explosion of songwriting in the interwar period. Its composers wrote about themselves and each other, the rituals of hashish smoking and the landmarks of a now vanished city. Markos the repentant sinner and living legend, looks back at childhood idylls in Syros, the arrival of the Asia Minor refugees, the terrible years of the Nazi Occupation, the ceaseless love affairs and disappointments, and the triumphs of the bouzouki. He offers a rare insight into the lives of toiling workers and the lowlife of one of the world's most ancient ports, where East meets West. Out of this melting pot he produced the classic songs that Greeks of all ages still love and know by heart.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. and he thought I’d enjoy reading about the subject of urban popular music in ... By Deborah Pacini A while ago a friend sent me a memoir entitled Markos Vamvakaris: The Man and the Bouzouki. Autobiography because he knew I’ve long had an interest in popular musics in the Americas, and he thought I’d enjoy reading about the subject of urban popular music in a completely different geographic and cultural setting. He was right: despite knowing nothing about Greek music or the Greek musician Markos Vamvakaris and the laiko songs he popularized in the 1930s and 40s, this wonderful memoir brought the man, his music and his times alive. And, while the trajectory of laiko, the style of popular music listened to by Greece’s urban working classes, as revealed in this memoir needs no comparisons to other urban popular musical styles that may be more familiar to American readers (such as blues, reggae and bachata), the memoir does illuminate the extraordinary musical creativity of poor and working class communities around the globe.Markos Vamvakaris was born on the island of Syra into a poor family of peasant origins struggling to make the difficult transition to day laborers in a “modernizing” economy. From a very young age he had to contribute to the family’s survival by working in a variety of low paying, undesirable jobs, from hawking newspapers to working as stevedore and, for years, as a skinner in a slaughterhouse. He supplemented his income by playing and composing songs reflecting his experiences hanging out with manghes, working class non-conformists who rejected the social and material values of bourgeois society; instead, despite the limitations imposed by low paying, back breaking work, manghes used their creativity and wits, in ways both legal and illegal, to enjoy the pleasures of song, dance and women to the hilt. These pleasures included smoking hashish, which put them in the cross-hairs of the authorities and moral guardians of bourgeois Greek society. All of Markos’ struggles and experiences, including spending time in jail for smoking hashish, found their way into Markos’ songs, whose power, humor and authenticity resonated deeply with his working class fans.Readers familiar with Greek culture and music will benefit most from this memoir, so rich in historical, geographical, cultural and musical details, but newcomers to the subject, like me, will also enjoy the ride. For those who know (or want to know) what laika music is, this book contains a wealth of first hand descriptions of the different instruments, styles, musicians and recordings circulating in Greece in before, during and after World War 2. Readers will also appreciate the lively descriptions of the urban working class social contexts in which laika music circulated throughout these years: these were mostly neighborhood dives, hashish dens and brothels, where working class men—workers and criminals alike—enjoyed congregating in the shadows of society. In his lusty and seemingly insatiable appetite for music and life, Markos might remind readers of the character Zorba the Greek in the film of that name. Like Zorba, his attitudes towards women (especially according to today’s standards of gender relationships) will likely appear to contemporary readers to be misogynistic and paternalistic, but this does not detract from the value of this vivid account of the life of an economically struggling but highly talented musician who became one of Greece’s most celebrated urban popular musicians. This memoir is also notable for the collective way in which it was produced. Originally published in Greek in 1972, it was constructed upon the foundation of autobiographical material written by Markos himself, but supplemented with material from many hours of interviews with Markos conducted by Angeliki Vellou-Keil in 1969. More than 40 years later, the original Greek memoir edited by Vellou-Keil was translated into English and re-edited by Noonie Minogue, who rearranged sections of text to make the narrative flow more easily, and who made the apt decision to employ vernacular English slang as needed to maintain the vigorous textures and tones of Markos’ speech patterns. Dozens of Markos’ songs, in the original Greek and in translation, are also included within the text, and Minogue similarly translated these with an ear to retaining Markos’ original meanings and tones rather than privileging strict literal translations. Thanks to the many loving and knowledgeable hands who played a part in producing it, English speakers now have access to this wonderful memoir.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fine translation of a "Street-Greek" classic. By charles keil I am biased, of course, because I know that my wife, Angeliki Vellou Keil, worked very hard to pull the transcriptions of taped interviews together for this book. lt took over a year of daily visits to a little office around the corner from our house in Buffalo, patiently shaping different pieces of interviews together for each chapter. I often looked at Alan Lomax's Mr. Jelly Roll as an early example of an as-told-to book. He made it look so easy to do. And David Ritz is another master of this craft, sometimes turning out 2 or 3 books a year by recording, transcribing, and sequencing the events and opinions, editing out any excesses of profanity, or leaving out a passing on of ugly rumors. His books, some of them very long and fully detailed, always feel natural, true to life -- again it looks easy. But take it from a friend of David's and a witness to wife Angeliki's labors, there are a lot of decisions to make about how many repetitions to leave in, and when does it seem prudent to leave a love affair out, or to put some particularly nasty insult or criticism of someone aside. At all times Angie insisted on keeping it just the way Markos spoke it, sticking to the transcription, and that turned out to have some unexpected benefits. I was very surprised when a committee had to be formed for making the "orthography" consistent, the spellings of words according to grammatical rules, because the Greek Markos spoke was not strictly "demotic" and certainly not according to the rules of "cleaned up Greek" or 'kathourevesa" -- and here I have an orthography problem -- do I spell "cleaned-up" in English the way I hear it in Greek? And this gets me to the point of this brief and preliminary review. Noonie Minogue, with a bit of help from Pavlos Melas and other Greeks I'm sure, has done a very fine job of translating, giving Markos a street-Greek "voice" in English. Frankly, Angie couldn't figure out how to do that, and neither could I. Was he a black man in "white-face"? A port worker or longshoreman from which American port? If "port-Greek" in a book was something of a shock to many Greeks in Greece, how could we convey THAT to an American audience? Noonie Minogue was very careful about chosing various "colloquial expressions", keeping many sentences brief and to the point, and the reading is easy. Careful editing of the Greek edition as she went along gives us just enough of each phase of Marcos' life, keeps it vivid, wanting more, not getting bored with the sufferings that the songs were meant to heal. This is more of a "blessing" or a "thank you note" for the style of it than a real review of the contents, but perhaps I can come back and do a longer review later, Amazon-rules permitting, that highlights some of the main points for students of "comparative urban music."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For the neophyte like me, the book includes a great analysis of ... By Charles R Planck Markos Vamvakaris said: “Something happens. I see it and I write.” (And sang and played the next day at a hash den or bar.) This vivid translation of his memories will get you as close as possible to the raw materials of a folk music tradition--- Greek urban working class song---and its performance settings in the community. Read it with You Tube’s “Markos Vamvakaris, Full Album” as the soundtrack. For the neophyte like me, the book includes a great analysis of the politics and musicology in the period by Angeliki Vellou Keil, who recorded the singer’s reminiscences here translated in 1969.

Monsters, grotesque creatures, and giants were frequently depicted in Italian Renaissance landscape design, yet they have rarely been studied. Their ubiquity indicates that gardens of the period conveyed darker, more disturbing themes than has been acknowledged.

In The Monster in the Garden, Luke Morgan argues that the monster is a key figure in Renaissance culture. Monsters were ciphers for contemporary anxieties about normative social life and identity. Drawing on sixteenth-century medical, legal, and scientific texts, as well as recent scholarship on monstrosity, abnormality, and difference in early modern Europe, he considers the garden within a broader framework of inquiry. Developing a new conceptual model of Renaissance landscape design, Morgan argues that the presence of monsters was not incidental but an essential feature of the experience of gardens.

Before Ever After is a treasury of rare and unpublished lecture notes, photographs and drawings which reflect the culture of learning that Walt Disney curated to raise the level of his artists in preparation for their first feature: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Walt hand-picked instructors from the renowned Chouinard Art Institute to hold classes on action and drawing.  He screened films for study.  He brought in talent from Architect Frank Lloyd Wright to choreographer George Balanchine to humorist Alexander Woollcott to teach and inspire his team.  The result is a stunning collection of transcripts and history which not only lay the artistic foundation for the animated art form, but also give us an intimate look inside the walls of Walt Disney's studio during a seminal and profoundly creative moment in time.

Before Ever After: The Lost Lectures of Walt Disney’s Animation Studio (Disney Editions Deluxe), by Don Hahn, Tracey Miller-Zarneke

From the Inside Flap Walt Disney built a cartoon studio and an empire on the shoulders of Mickey Mouse, but to make the leap from shorts to feature films, he knew his artists had raise the bar.  At first Disney himself drove artists to nearby Chouinard Art Institute for classes, then expanded that educational effort by building his own in-house training program like no other before or since. Before Ever After is a compilation of rare and previously unpublished lecture notes from that extraordinary training effort.   Among others, Frank Lloyd Wright who spoke about his philosophy on art and design, Alexander Woollcott about humor and entertainment, Yale color theorist Faber Birren on color theory, Disney Legends Art Babbit, Fred Moore, and Bill Tytla gave live critiques of their animation and artist Don Graham lectured extensively on composition, drawing and fine art.Now some eighty years later, these lost lectures are presented with text and context, richly illustrated to show the brilliance of Walt's plan to raise the level of his artists to invent the modern animated

A revolutionary book By Didier Ghez Before Ever After: The Lost Lectures of Walt Disney’s Animation Studio by Don Hahn and Tracey Miller-Zarneke is a revolutionary book. It is the kind of book that raises the standards for Disney history books overall. It's close to 450 pages long and when you start looking at it, you know right away that Don and Tracey tried to make every page special (they succeeded). Every document included in the book has been selected with extreme care. Most of the photos and illustrations have never been seen before, each of the lectures is special in its own way. The authors found a lot of great material and then started digging even deeper to find even more treasures. This is the book I dreamed would be released about Disney's Training Program. It's "practically perfect in every way."Of course, the only criticism one could raise, is one that could be raised about many books that are dear to our hearts (the criticism applies to my own books too): we wish the book were even larger and included even more of those rare illustrations and lectures.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Historic, but still relevant today. By M. Sonntag There have been some fantastic Disney history books this year, but this one is really up there with the best, why? It is both instructional and an historic account.First up, the book documents Disney's legendary art training program of the 1930s when Walt brought top artists, art critics and art teachers of the day into the studio to educate his artists and improve their skills. Transcripts of lectures were made for distribution, many today fetching hundreds of dollars today at auction. Don has had them scanned in high detail here, so you are actually reading the unedited notes.Along with the notes we get photos and drawings that put these note into perspective alongside the projects that were in the works at the time. For animation students this book is an asset, here is where all our knowledge of modern animation comes from.Buy it, devour it. There is so much here, and it is brought to you by a modern Disney legend.

The writing puts you back in time and you can appreciate the subtlety of every lecture. The wisdom, insights, and philosophy in the formative early Disney years is something we need to return to.Just a magnificent book.

The definitive book of Beatles songs, shown as first written by their own hands and put into authoritative context, for the 50th anniversary of the Beatles coming to America. For the Beatles, writing songs was a process that could happen anytime -- songs we all know by heart often began as a scribble on the back of an envelope or on hotel stationery. These original documents have ended up scattered across the world at museums and universities and with collectors and friends. Many have never been published before. More than 100 songs and lyrics are reproduced in THE BEATLES LYRICS, providing Hunter Davies a unique platform to tell the story of the music. The intimacy of these reproductions -- there are sections crossed out and rewritten, and words tossed into the final recordings that were never written down -- ensures that THE BEATLES LYRICS will be a treasure for musicians, scholars, and fans everywhere.

The Beatles Lyrics: The Stories Behind the Music, Including the Handwritten Drafts of More Than 100 Classic Beatles SongsFrom Little, Brown and Company

Review "Rich with insider authenticity. To paraphrase Walt Whitman, Mr. Davies was the man, he suffered, he was there.... The book itself-with Mr. Davies's expert guidance-gives us a glimpse into genius. No better monument could mark the 50th anniversary of the Beatles arrival in America, nothing, that is, short of coming up with a hitherto lost scrap of paper with a Beatles lyric on it, wittily doodled on."―Alexander Theroux, Wall Street Journal"Beatles expert Hunter Davies demonstrates that the Fab Four wrote their songs just about anywhere--many began as a scribble on the back of an envelope, on a napkin, or on hotel stationery. The collection reproduces more than one original manuscript, granting the reader an all-access look behind the music."―Henry L. Carrigan Jr., Publishers Weekly"A fascinating, intimate glimpse into the creative process behind some of the greatest pop songs ever written."―Christian Science Monitor"A stunning collection."―BookPage

49 of 50 people found the following review helpful. The book on the lyrics to The Beatles' songs is a job well done by Hunter Davies and joy to have and read. By groei@xs4all.nl I read the book on Beatles' lyrics today, oh boy..And I like it..The layout and size of this book is similar to Hunter Davies' book 'The John Lennon Letters', this means little less than 400 pages, in a mid-size hardcover book with reader friendly but old fashioned typography. The layout similarity is especially noticeable in the way the content of the manuscript photographs is repeated in the text body, as in the `Lennon Letters' book this works very well here. The images provide a glimpse of a Beatles' activity in the past, writing on a piece of paper; the words reproduced in the text-body are presented for contemplation and analysis and for you to hear the words thru voices and music sounding in the hallways of your mind..Davies presents approximately 120 reproductions of song transcripts. Sometimes these were scraps of paper on the studio-floor from 1966/7 Hunter Davies took with him, when he had the privileged position of closeness to the boys while working on his authorized biography, others are nuggets from antiquarian shops, published in auctions catalogues or from unnamed friends. Hunter even had the opportunity to ask the boys for handwritten lyrics of songs he said he wanted to write about in the biography. Manuscripts of lyrics are even re-handwritten after the actual process of composition and recording was finished. Davies presents pictures of these little manuscripts and we are lucky, he adds pictures of e.g. Beatles' summer activities for 1966, the 'Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite'-poster, contracts, concert programs, etc..Some of these manuscripts reveal the development of the lyrics, occasionally this info is unique and a first. The revealed perspectives are sometime funny as with Maxwell's Silver Hammer, sometimes illustrative for the creative process e.g. Old Brown Shoe and 'It's Only Love', and for the Beatles' Sherlock in us, handwriting can raise doubts on who composed what, check out for this e.g. Don't Pass Me By (?). From the handwritten corrections in the manuscripts we get a perspective on the development of songs and the quality and (un-)intended or meanings of lyrics. E.g. the word 'naughty' in "naughty girl you let your knickers down" from John's 'I Am The Walrus' was first considered by John to be a 'lucky' girl; yeah right, what else..The three pillars of a song, whether from Schubert, Lennon and McCartney, or Dylan are words, voice and music/sound. Davies' discussion of 'Here, There and Everywhere' illustrates this perfectly well and simultaneously confirms the high respect of the song in The Beatles' catalogue. Other manuscripts suggest that in the process of composition and recording music and the singing, the meaning of words and lines become secondary to the overall sound, as they change words for musical reasons and we see how the meaning of the lyric changes significantly or shifts the perspective 'from me to you'.The lyrical change from 'lucky girl' to 'naughty girl', in John's 'I Am The Walrus', creates a punchier improved rhyme (naughty and knickers) and adds a bite perfectly fitting Lennon's singing Beatles' rock music, yet it also changes the meaning. The 'lucky' puts Lennon in a position of: 'Hey girl you're lucky to get attention from ME because your knickers are down', making her grateful for his sexual prowess. The 'naughty' transfers the sexual initiative to the girl and puts Lennon in the position of the innocent male who is willing to be seduced. In sixties-thinking this makes the girl more slutty than it does in England today. There are terrific risks you are obliged to take as an artist. 'All songs about relationships between men and women are (potentially) accusable of sexism. Every great writer and artist, who has tackled relationships and sexism has been accused of sexism - Jane Austen was accused of sexism', Christopher Risk said a few years ago in a conversation with Sean Wilentz. The same goes for religious stuff. Any fan of The Beatles knows, John was accused of blasphemy or worse more than once. In the review of 'The Ballad of John and Yoko' Hunter Davies offers considerations that the line 'they're gonna crucify me' was 'ridiculous', 'total paranoia' or even 'delusional' - and then he writes that 'in a sense, that is what happened to him in the end...'. Now that seems to be too far gone, the journalist Davies is obliged to rise above the public's stupid mythical point of view and make smarter interpretations. The verb 'crucify' does have more meanings than criminals getting death penalty by crucifixion on a wooden cross, there is really more than the literal interpretation of the verb 'crucify'. But, hey Hunter Davies was the biographer, so maybe he knows john better than anyone of us - the potential buyers of his book..Davies does not claim know the truth, he doesn't brag either and his writing appears to be very relaxed. He doesn't wanna get you in the end. He observes and presents comments and interpretations as such. Even though on a rare occasion he elevates an opinion and judgment to the level of truth and reality, as in his suggestion the lyrics to 'Paperback Writer' "don't in fact have a lot of logic to them", he presents this as a fact, but it is only his opinion, his way of interpreting this piece of art without considering his interpretation might be irrelevant or even misplaced. The good thing is Hunter Davies describes, explains and provides arguments, which is what a annotator should do. I really like his honesty when he admits he totally missed out on the song 'Rain', at the time..There are a few relevant negatives about the book. I dislike the paper that is used. The quality of the printed pictures are greyish bland and often boring, they lose their potential power and become e/affectless on the reader. Hunter Davies presents almost all The Beatles' songs, yet he leaves out the Anthology collection, on the other hand for the sake of (not so) completism songs are included about which Davies doesn't have a lot to say. I think there a bit too many handwritten lyrics that were produced when the creative process of composition and recording was already way back in the past, I wonder: 'are we still living in the times of idolatry?'.As with the 'Lennon Letters' these images of manuscripts and the discussion of them are a joy to have, when one doesn't have the money to buy memorabilia. As such this book is a valuable contribution to the vast amount of books discussing the art of The Beatles..Please be aware this is not THE most complete, nor is it the final book that reviews and discusses creative processes and the artistic results of the Beatles as composers, musicians and performers, but Hunter Davies provides a contribution to that end that should not be ignored.I do hope this book challenges other authors to dig deeper into the creative process of composition by The Beatles..So click on thru and buy the book.(sorry for my not so native English)

But this one is a bit different. The author, Hunter Davies, the only person to write an authorized biography, and knew the Beatles personally, has collected many of the still existing scraps, envelopes, napkins, and other pieces of paper with lyrics written (and sometimes scribbled quickly) for many of the band's songs. Along with that he also includes his own observations and memories of the period. Davies' last book was a collection of John Lennon's letters that revealed a different side of Lennon/The Beatles, and this new book does a bit of the same kind of thing from a different vantage point. Many (most) of the hand written lyrics included (100+) have been gathered from many sources. This is the first time that these original pieces have been tracked down and collected. Is this a book for someone with only a passing interest in The Beatles and/or reading/seeing the lyrics in the original forms? No. This book is for a deep fan of The Beatles, someone who liked the Lennon letters collection for instance. Davies gives these lyrics a foundation from his personal knowledge of the group--what they were doing at the time, what was going on around them, their thought process, and in some cases, how the original lyrics changed at recording time. The chapters are laid out with titles like "Love Me Do", "With The Beatles", "A Hard Day's Night", "Beatles For Sale", "Help!", "Rubber Soul", "Revolver", "Strawberry Fields", and so on. Included are many photos from the various periods in the band's life, posters, ads, and of course reproductions of the lyrics themselves in their original written form. Some of these are virtually illegible so the lyrics are printed next to the originals. Also included is a twenty-five page Introduction, Discography, Bibliography, and an Index. This book is more than just a collection of lyrics. With Davies' insights of the era we get a deeper look into the many songs included here. Before I started going through this book, I was pretty certain that this book was just another "Beatles book". But I was wrong. This is worth reading or just browsing through for the Beatles fan who wants to get a bit closer to the band through Davies observations and memories. This book is also available with a different red cover from the British publisher.

Not any real revelations since so much has already been written about the Beatles and their writing. However, it's good to have a nice single volume that collects many photos of the actual handwritten song manuscripts along with the narrative commentary by Davies.Purchased somewhere else though because of the IDIOTIC embargo that Amazon has placed against Hachette Book Group due to Amazon's dispute with Hachette. Amazon claims it will take up to 3 weeks for this book when it is readily available elsewhere for not much more than Amazon's currently listed price of $31.50(MSRP $35.00)

If you buy a single book on writing, and have some hopes for commercial success (whatever that may mean to you), make it this one. It is, by a very large margin, the most practical, engaging, and genuinely helpful advice I have ever seen on what it takes to write something other people want to read, all gathered into one neat package. I have one book out and I've completed a few other manuscripts, one of which I've been struggling with big-time. Spending the last several hours with Beth's book has crystallized my plot and character elements, showed me the holes I didn't even realize were there, and helped me separate the wheat from the chaff: in her words, to find the beating heart of the story. I think it's useful for anyone in any stage of their career, published or not. If you want razor sharp advice served up with a sense of humor, look no further. I've been writing pages of notes and expect to go back to this one again and again. She has two more coming up, on publishing and marketing, I will definitely pick those up.Thank you, Beth! Also for sharing your own path-to-publishing travails, and how to stay motivated.Kitty Stapp/Kat Ross

Great, practical writing advice By Chasia Lloyd This was a very solid and well-organized book which tackles so many aspects of writing and trying to break into publishing. Beth Revis is empathetic through her entire run, regularly reminding readers that no single piece of writing advice applies universally to everyone. Much of this book is tackled from a "this is what has worked for me" point of view, not a "listen to me, I am totally right" perspective.Revis covers a bit of everything - characters, plot, setting, revising, grammar, critique partners, querying, rejections. Each chapter is only about two or three pages long, but they all bring something important to the table. I really enjoyed the charts she included for different ways of mapping out a story.Since Revis is a YA writer herself, most of her examples and advice slant towards that, but she talks a little bit about other age categories. Still, I feel other YA writers would benefit the most from this writing advice book. Before reading this, I felt like I knew pretty much everything there is to know about the art of writing, but Revis showed me I can always learn more. She twists things I had already internalized and puts a fresh spin on them that makes me aware of how I can be better. This book is amazing!***review copy provided by NetGalley**

While not all of her methods work for me in my writing, I like the way she presents everything: simple, straightforward, no-nonsense. It's easy to read, easy to understand, and does a wonderful job explaining that it's okay if some advice just doesn't work for you. I also very much enjoyed the commentary on diversity and feminism--that alone would make me recommend this book to my writer friends. Overall, a wonderful book, and one I highly recommend, especially to anyone wanting to write YA. That being said, it's not just for YA writers, so if you're looking for good advice, consider checking this one out.

In his Berlin lectures on fine art, Hegel argued that art involves a unique form of aesthetic intelligibility—the expression of a distinct collective self-understanding that develops through historical time. Hegel’s approach to art has been influential in a number of different contexts, but in a twist of historical irony Hegel would die just before the most radical artistic revolution in history: modernism. In After the Beautiful, Robert B. Pippin, looking at modernist paintings by artists such as Édouard Manet and Paul Cézanne through Hegel’s lens, does what Hegel never had the chance to do.While Hegel could never engage modernist painting, he did have an understanding of modernity, and in it, art—he famously asserted—was “a thing of the past,” no longer an important vehicle of self-understanding and no longer an indispensable expression of human meaning. Pippin offers a sophisticated exploration of Hegel’s position and its implications. He also shows that had Hegel known how the social institutions of his day would ultimately fail to achieve his own version of genuine equality, a mutuality of recognition, he would have had to explore a different, new role for art in modernity. After laying this groundwork, Pippin goes on to illuminate the dimensions of Hegel’s aesthetic approach in the path-breaking works of Manet, the “grandfather of modernism,” drawing on art historians T. J. Clark and Michael Fried to do so. He concludes with a look at Cézanne, the “father of modernism,” this time as his works illuminate the relationship between Hegel and the philosopher who would challenge Hegel’s account of both modernity and art—Martin Heidegger.Elegantly inter-weaving philosophy and art history, After the Beautiful is a stunning reassessment of the modernist project. It gets at the core of the significance of modernism itself and what it means in general for art to have a history. Ultimately, it is a testament, via Hegel, to the distinctive philosophical achievements of modernist art in the unsettled, tumultuous era we have inherited.

After the Beautiful: Hegel and the Philosophy of Pictorial Modernism, by Robert B. Pippin

Review “In his engaging, innovative study, Pippin uses the work of Manet and Cezanne (the grandfather and father of modernism) to embark on a kind of philosophical time travel with Hegel. Pippin persuasively argues that Hegel’s thought remains relevant for helping one understand the achievements of modernist painting as philosophical achievements. . . . The theoretical and historical sweep of Pippin’s study is impressive and delightfully illuminating. . . .  Highly recommended.” (E. Millán Choice)“After the Beautiful is a strikingly original contribution to the debate on the relevance of Hegel’s Aesthetics to the contemporary world, and not just the art world. Taking a modified Hegelian approach shorn of metaphysical commitments, the author seeks to shed light on the ‘crisis’ of modernism: how art might perhaps make sense—both intelligible and felt sense—of a senseless, disjointed reality. Through subtle readings of texts and artworks, Robert B. Pippin brings out the need to interpret art as a mode of address, as communication in a society that puts communicability in question. This is a challenging book, which brings Hegel to life in unexpected ways.” (Martin Donougho, University of South Carolina)“There is a fair amount of philosophical literature about whether Hegel could accommodate modern, post-1840s art within his philosophy, but that field usually divides into the ‘Yes, he can,’ and ‘No, he cannot’ camps. Both camps generally argue on the basis of canonical Hegelian texts, differing only on the implications they draw from those texts. In After the Beautiful, however, the historical Hegel himself is drawn into criticism under Robert B. Pippin’s contemporary interpretation—called to alter his original account in certain key areas if he is to stay true to his original program. This is a very ambitious way of doing philosophy, and Pippin pulls it off very well.” (Terry Pinkard, Georgetown University)“From the first contemporary commentaries on Édouard Manet to the most sophisticated art historical interpretations, the critical response to modernist painting has always suffered from a mismatch between aesthetic and social accounts of its nature. Robert B. Pippin’s new book offers nothing less than a compelling argument overcoming this dualism. His philosophical reconstruction of the history of art from Manet to Cézanne demonstrates forcefully that in modernist painting the most unsettling question of modern life found expression: whether a meaningful social practice is conceivable.” (Ralph Ubl, University of Basel)

About the Author Robert B. Pippin is the Evelyn Stefansson Nef Distinguished Service Professor in the John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought, the Department of Philosophy, and the College at the University of Chicago. He is the author of several books, including Nietzsche, Psychology, and First Philosophy and Interanimations, both also published by the University of Chicago Press.

By Charles Gorodess Robert Pippin and Stanley Rosen are two of America's most distinguished Hegel philosophers. Pippin's latest contribution to the understanding of Hegel is based on an extension of his theory of art projected into the future. Since Hegel notoriously said that philosophy only comes on the scene after the fact, some shoe-horning is inevitable. Pippin focusses on two 19th century French impressionists in order to illustrate a more general thesis of why art itself has become problematic. His insights come page by page, his arguments are just plain interesting, and at the end I felt that I understood better an aspect of Hegel's thought that has been of scholarly interest since Kant's 3rd Critique set the challenge to understand the nature of art and its limitations.

If you've been following Robert Pippin's project about Hegel and the possibility of expressing the ideal of governing one's self and making one's own place in the world filled with other people who have the same desire to belong in that world (it's tied up with several other not-quite-mainstream academic philosophical projects), then you've heard all of the Hegel before, so it makes sense. Not otherwise. If you've been following Michael Fried's project about modernism in painting and the problem of absorption in painting from Diderot to Manet, then the art history would make sense to you. Not otherwise. But if you've been following both, then you know the whole story already.Robert Pippin is a brilliant expositor of Hegel. He's also attentive and insightful when he explains what's going on in a painting. But this book is too short to do justice to either side of the exposition. I suppose if it were delivered as a set of lectures (which they were), I would have sat enraptured at them (as I have, when I've been). There are better Pippin books about Hegel (Hegel's Practical Philosophy stands out). There are better Fried books about art.

What can happen if native workers at an African safari lodge believe a client is a god? U.S. Marshal Cain Rippinger is on a ten-day trip to Jumapili Lodge, an eco-hunting-photography paradise located on the eastern edge of Tanzania’s Serengeti. Besides hunting he ends up tackling poachers, endangered rhinos and forbidden jungles. The staff, well heeled in the ways of first-class British hospitality and tradition, admires him. However it isn’t the lion’s claw or the hippo’s jaws that brings him to his knees. And for once, it isn’t a woman. It’s the supernatural. A spiritual struggle raging around him overlaps with the physical just long enough to make him appear god-like. Oblivious to what others have seen and perceive, this places him at odds with tribal customs and native superstition. It also makes him contemptible in the eyes of local witchdoctors. The natives seek to worship him and test his powers but the lodge owner anticipates nothing but trouble. Ancient traditions the owner has managed to repress have returned and they threaten everything Jumapili stands for—including the lives of everyone involved.

Rod's grasp of all things Africa demonstrates what must have been a significant effort. The spiritual aspects were great. The explosive mix of tribal customs and religions with Rinninger's run in with spiritual beings was a surprise. It fueled an exciting conclusion. The wildlife descriptions were great. Can't wait for Rippinger's next adventure!

Foilsíodh aistriúchán Gaeilge le Nicholas Williams sa bhliain 2003, agus cuireadh amach an dara heagrán de in 2007. An Irish translation by Nicholas Williams was published in 2003, with a second edition in 2007. But the first Irish translation by Pádraig Ó Cadhla (1875-1948) was published in 1922 though the book is difficult to acquire these days and few have read it. This new edition of Ó Cadhla's translation appears in 2015, the 150th anniversary of the first publication of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".

Eachtra Eibhlíse i dTír na nIontas (Irish Edition), by Lewis Carroll

About the Author Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Best known for his classics Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky, Carroll was also an accomplished inventor who created an early version of what is today known as Scrabble. The publication of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 brought Carroll a certain level of fame, although he continued to supplement his income through his work as a mathematics tutor at Christ Church, Oxford College. Carroll s whimsical characters and nonsensical verse resonated with Victorian-era readers, and his books continue to be enjoyed by numerous modern societies dedicated to his promoting his works.
