Thirteen-year-old Unity Griggs needs to escape her life. After being uprooted from her much-loved fairground home by her parents, Unity finds herself living in an unwelcoming village along the North Devon coast. Because of her quirky, independent nature she does not fit in easily and soon becomes the victim of bullies at her local school. Fed up, she resorts to playing truant. It is during one of these out-of-class adventures that she comes across Lookout Cottage, a near derelict ruin of a place with a dark and terrible history. There, she finds an odd young boy wearing a crown made from broken sticks and shells and believes that being abused is part of his life. It is not the boy who then causes Unity to turn and flee back home. It is something else; something moving in the shadows of the old house, and something that will eventually turn her world into a living nightmare.

Baker's first published book - and on the compelling evidence provided by "Unity and the King" - now retitled "The Crown of Distant Dreams" - he is clearly both a talented and darkly interesting writer. The novel holds a number of surprises, none more so than the sneaky and skilful way the author draws the reader into a far more shadowy world than perhaps they might have anticipated - particularly given the somewhat `easy going' synopsis that only hints at what lies ahead - don't be fooled by this synopsis; what awaits is, for the most part at least, an exciting tale of escape - both physical and mental, that leads to a sort of redemption and reckoning - not just for "Unity" and "the King" - but for many of the characters the reader encounters along the way. The early action switches between 1954 and 1978 before settling in 1978. (And for an older reader such as me it was great to see cultural-music references such as Blondie and the Police given a shout out.) The upshot of this is that the novel is lent a sort of 'old school' rawness (free of mobile phones and laptops) reminiscent of Allan Campbell McLean or David Line. The reader is drawn easily into the latter era particularly and this gives the characters a freshness and vulnerability, and to some degree an innocence, that perhaps one does not see in contemporary novels of this ilk. After the initial framing of setting and character the author keeps the action at a good pace throughout which results in an exciting, and without giving too much away, a thrilling, not to mention shocking, final few chapters. The novel is not a particularly long one and this too is a plus as it makes the whole thing more absorbing and claustrophobic. An interesting side point is that the novel also, in a quasi-metaphorical way, has something to say about, shall we say, 'religious upbringings.' And again, without giving away plot secrets, the idea that, as a child, we are told certain things that we have no choice but to believe, and in many cases readily accept, is explored and, eventually, confronted. If I were asked to describe the novel in a sentence or so, I would say it lives somewhere between The Night of the Hunter and a macabre Stig of the Dump. I thoroughly recommend this book and, furthermore, I look forward to more literary offerings from the author. NB. Baker's new book is out now on Amazon and is titled "The Lostman Woods." I shall read and review directly.
