Below are my thoughts on the second and third book in the series. CassaFire made me fall in love with Alex Cavanaugh's universe. I immediately went back to read CassaStar and enjoyed it just as much. The best thing about Alex's writing is that he sticks to the rules of his own universe. They are different than life as we know it, but it's believable and seamless.CassaFire--Byron and Athee were both likeable characters and I found myself rooting for them. There was a nice romantic thread running through the story (which is great for girls like me), but the story wasn't about the romance. Well, it kind of was, but not. Does that make sense? In the midst of all the mystery about the alien ship and the drama playing out, true friendship and ultimately love are what Byron needs most in his life to really LIVE again. The tech was great! I loved the idea of teleporting/jumping ships for the mode of space travel. In fact I loved all the telepathic elements of the story. I wish we could start developing our deeply hidden psychic abilities. Oh, and kudos to Alex for letting Athee have more ability than Byron. It's a great writer that can let a new character outshine the character he loved first. And a woman! Every time someone learned that the strongest psychic candidate could also jump (which is rare anyway) was a woman, I laughed at their responses. It was so well done and realistic for a ship full of men to drop their jaws in surprise.I was pleasantly surprised by all of the world and tech building in the book. Alex found a great balance between different and exciting without overburdening me with HOW everything works. To me this is one of the best examples of believing in your system. As a reader I don't need to know HOW things work as long as it feels believable. The only way you can write that is by believing in it yourself. Makes sense, right?CassaStorm--Cavanaugh makes world building on the galactic scale look easy. He knows how to build on the conflict from the first two books in the series and raise the stakes even higher. The stakes affect the entire known universe, but Cavanaugh also makes it very personal. Byron is still just as stubborn and private as ever, but he's learned to let those he loves into his mind. In this story he's got two more lessons to learn, and the last one's a doosey! One of the things I appreciate about Cavanaugh's writing style is the fact you could read any one of the books in this series independently of the other and enjoy a good book. However, I can promise you that if you invest the time to read CassaStar and CassaFire first, the emotional impact and payoff of CassaStorm will be much higher.I can't say enough about the world building in this series. The science is amazing for two reasons--it's understandable and so ingrained in the world that you just accept and believe every bit of it. The descriptions of the planets, ships, etc make it easy to ground yourself in the Cassan universe without that feeling of drifting untethered in zero G.

By Elizabeth Seckman This wonderful series is more than a story about spaceships, interstellar dogfights, and alien invaders. It's also a great human drama following the life of Byron, a brash young pilot with extraordinary skills. This series pulls you through Byron's life- from hard-headed newbie through seasoned war pilot to a quiet man searching for peace- and instead finding more adventure and a bit of romance. Well honestly? That all combines to make the perfect story. As a non-sci fi nut, I was drawn in by the relationships...especially when it started to heat up between Byron and Athee. Sort of like how Han Solo/ Princess Leia or Anakin/Padme story line stole the show in the Star Wars movies- a bit of romance makes the story go from good to sizzling. But it also has appeal for sci-fi lovers. My husband read it also and loved it, though he was more impressed with the star ships, telepathy, and fights.
