"DON'T LET THEM KNOW YOU'RE SCARED" - VALERIAN'S GARDEN A year ago, industrial-goth band Valerian's Garden exploded into the mainstream, seemingly out of nowhere. Their nonstop touring, incendiary live performances, and down - to - earth personalities have turned them into the darlings of the music world; their lead singer, Angel, in particular. For the first time ever, their reclusive, introverted front woman tells the complete story of how the five musicians found each other and set out on their journey. She'll talk about the friends they've made and those they've left behind - and will explore, in depth, what the journey has cost.

I think it's extremely important to note that this type of story is not my typical genre so it's difficult to judge this book to others in the same vein. One of the things that I greatly enjoyed about Valerian's Garden are the heavy references to dark alternative music (I hesitate to say 'goth' but it does go there). It certainly takes me back to my own high school days listening to Depeche Mode, the Cure, NIN etc. and dressing in full on goth attire. Not only that, but the lead character Angel is a bit of a feisty ass kicker which also lends to the credibility of the story given her history and path in life. While the story focuses on Angel, Pete hasn't neglected to flesh out the other characters which further make them believable. Everyone has their own issues, strengths, weaknesses, quirks, etc. and he maintains these traits and stays true to the characters throughout the book.Almost all of the story is written as flashbacks since Angel is being interviewed by Roger Maklin from New Music Monthly. While this method of writing can get a bit dizzying at times Russo has managed to keep things organized and interesting. During her time with the interviewer you find out about the modest beginnings of the band in high school to their climb up the ladder and struggles that occur during that period. Pete doesn't stray from the difficult decisions that have to be made - Do you keep the alcoholic band mate or kick them out? Do you confront the vomit spewing overly exhausted singer who refuses to take a break? And he also doesn't skirt around the tragedies of life and how they shape us in the future. While some moments are funny (how stubborn can a gal really get - very!) and some moments are painful it all comes together as an interesting story of Valerian's Garden.Another thing that I also enjoyed is since this is Pete's debut work he doesn't fall into the trap a lot of authors do in their first work - overly complicated language. He's writing is clear and easy to understand which lends itself to a good flow for reading. Everything about the book is approachable and easy to relate to in some way for everyone.I was informed that the ending is what came first so when you enter into this book you'll need to stick with the slow build. Thankfully Pete is good at putting many entertaining bits and pieces throughout the book so you're not dragging through to make it to the big reveal at the end.I look forward to Russo's next novel and see how he grows as a writer in whichever genre he chooses next.

Brilliant character study of a rock band's rise to fame By Jarrod Rollins I finally had a chance to read through my copy of "One Chance: The Legend of Valerian's Garden" and it was even better than I expected. Pete Russo has put together a great study here of the journey this band makes to achieve their dreams. As you might expect, a lot of the focus is on the lead singer and her journey since it's a huge part of the band's story and mythos, but you also get a chance to meet plenty of other intriguing characters. There were some very creative aspects to it and great characters throughout. I really enjoyed how it balanced some dark, tough moments with a hopefulness for the future and for enduring to reach your goals. Kudos to Pete on a job well done!

It gives a lot of insights on the band itself and some of the struggles their go through in their lives. I recommend this book to anyone that has an interest of reading a book because for a long while, I rarely read a book as they don't interest me these days.
