Everyone says the ghosts can’t get into the city . . . But Anastasia knows better. She sees them in the alleyways, the gardens, and once, inside her very own bedroom. They follow her along the edges of the Avertronic barrier that protects the city, their mouths moving like they are trying to speak, but never finding the words. She can’t understand how it is that her father and brother can travel outside the barrier’s protection each and every day, knowing they may never return. She tries to console herself that at least her boyfriend is safe, but she hasn’t heard from him in the two long years since his mother got sick and his family was traded to another city. From the Author If you like stories that will pull you through a whirlwind of emotions, with a protagonist that starts off weak and ends up strong, and a plot you won't be able to unravel before you get there, I think you're going to enjoy The Ghostlands. As a reader who quickly gets bored and is greatly annoyed if I figure out the end before I get there, CN James & I worked hard to make sure you'll be engaged to the very end. --Amy Joy
About the Author CN (Christian) James & Amy Joy are a husband-wife writing team specializing in dystopian science fiction. James' first published work, a short story titled "The Dark Room," won honorable mention in the 78th Annual Writer's Digest Competition for genre short story, and Joy's debut novel, The Academie, became an Amazon bestseller within months of its release. Both have collaborated a great deal in their writing, but The Ghostlands is their first full collaboration from concept, through countless revisions, to release. When they aren't writing, both teach college writing, and James teaches guitar while Joy creates art. They also enjoy exploring the outdoors, which is where you can find them together in their off time.

I couldn't put it down, a gripping story that keeps you on your toes By GoldwingDocs As a forty-something male that most definitely does not believe in ghosts, I am most definitely not within the target demographic of this book.So it was with a bit of trepidation that I began reading the latest work by CN James and Amy Joy, basing my expectations on the reputation forged by the excellent "The Academie." Not only was I not disappointed, it became readily apparent that I was going to like this book much more. The reader is dropped into the Ghostlands world, which at first seems like a simple extension of our reality, maybe a couple hundred years in the future. However, you rapidly realize that there are major differences between our world and theirs - and yet the characters accept these differences as normal. Quite a few of these differences the reader is left to figure out on their own, such as Name Value, Avertronics, and the Dome. They are introduced in the story without fanfare or explanation, and as you read further, their purpose becomes clear. The reason I point this out is because it is a very good example of how quickly you become immersed in this book, and its world. The descriptive prose builds a complex world in your mind, with seemingly insignificant details adding to the overall feel of this bizarre world. The book is written in the first-person, from the viewpoint of Anastasia, the protagonist. Anastasia at first seems a bizarre choice as a protagonist: she is weak, useless, and ends up crying or fainting at the slightest stress in life. We are privy to Anastasia's thought processes, and for a time, I almost became exasperated with her hopelessness and apathy.Anastasia is continually harassed by the "ghosts" - strange otherworldly creatures from outside the protective dome, and with the sudden loss of her boyfriend, seemingly the only stabilizing force in her life, she is spiraling down into a hole, seemingly pursued by the strange creatures. A sudden ejection from civilization finds her having to fend for herself for the first time in her life, and she experiences a very rapid growth curve that is satisfying to observe. Two things struck me as I read The Ghostlands: First, that every time I thought I had figured out where the story was going, it veered off on an unexpected tangent, yet still connected to the overall theme. Second, I couldn't put it down! I ended up spending some very late nights where I repeatedly decided, "OK, just one more chapter" - and kept on reading, because I absolutely had to know what was going to happen next. The biggest horror came when the book ended immediately after an action-filled climax - a little suddenly for my liking. To my relief, the next page reminded me that this is only Part 1 of a two-part story.I can't wait for Part 2 to come out, to find out what happens next to Anastasia, at the cusp of her rebirth and realization.Oh, and where I can get an Avertronic rifle?

It vividly created an original world with interesting and unique characters, exciting drama, bittersweet romance, all sorts of danger and threats, and even gore. Ghostlands has it all. I am not much of a reader and typically only read a few pages before falling asleep each night, but I found myself wanting to find time during the day just to keep the story going and see what happened next. I can't wait for the next book!

It isn't at all the type of story I usually read. I am not really into ghosts or "spacey" type stories but the description of the book made it sound interesting. This story has a little of everything in it, including mystery and romance. It isn't predictable either. Just when I thought I knew what direction it was going in--it changed direction, and when I thought I knew how it was going to end---it fooled me. That and the great descriptions of things throughout made me want to keep reading to find out what happened next. I read the entire book in one day and can't wait for Part 2! I will definitely be watching for it!
