The intent of the Strike! Series of eleven books is to explore the various paranormal phenomena that humans have reported over the millennia. I have written the story of the fictional Tsitsistas People as if all of the stories of ghosts, mind reading, intuition, spiritual life after death, telekinesis, out-of-body experiences, apparitions, guardian angels, premonitions, and etcetera, reported by humans over the millennia are not only true, but can be controlled with the proper training of a human mind. The fictional Tsitsistas people learn to harness the true power of the human mind over a long, twenty-three thousand years, period of time in what I hope to have described as a logical evolution of human abilities, like the variations of human speech or the ability for the human mind to solve complex problems. I began working on this idea many years ago when I became aware of the effect a traumatic brain injury had on my cognitive ability. I treated myself because at the time of my accident, 1979, absolutely no one gave a good holy damn about my scrambled brains. The accident (my head was run over by a pickup truck loaded with glass) brought my experiences in Vietnam to the attention of my cognitive mind. I began to have what I suppose were ‘flashbacks’ of events that I did not associate with my past. A friend told me that he thought that the images that appeared to me in my mind were repressed memories. I explored that idea. In the summer of 1998 this story came into my head, unbidden. I apologize for the length, 2100 pages, but I have never expected anyone to read it, anyway. I have had fun. I have also had to learn to write, no mean feat. And, yes, I know that I am not a writer on the level of Dickens or Hemingway. I do not apologize for my idiosyncratic writing style. I like my life. The story begins with a soldier in the twentieth century who has experienced extreme, for him, stress during combat. He believes that a Spirit is in his head to guide him in mortal life in order to cope with the memories and flashbacks of the extreme stress. We currently call the inability to cope with the rationalization of past terror ‘post traumatic stress’. Some people are better at coping with horrid personal events than others. In the event, the traumatized soldier marries his childhood sweetheart and lives a long, fulfilling, life. He is always haunted by the events he has witnessed many years earlier, however. The former soldier dies in extreme old age, 92, firmly believing that his beloved wife, who has died some three years before him, has also joined him in his mind and that they will live together forever. This last attempt to feel that his mind has found peace with his previous wartime experiences, his personal rationalization of past events, is the motivating factor for him to want to love his beloved forever. She will ease the hurt his mind has endured. His belief that his wife’s Spirit is inside his mind is so strong that he renames himself for her on his deathbed, Lyllia. NB: I have invented a way for the Spirits to communicate. This is NOT parlor trick telepathy. This is the same method of conversational expression you and I would have verbally if we ever met. The Spirits simply communicate mind-to-mind. The Spirits do not use words. For the Spirits to use words would be silly because Spirits not only do not speak, they have no mortal presence. They also used different languages when they were alive, i.e. mortal. So the Spirits use mental images and symbols. Imagine that you are speaking to someone who does not speak your language using a keyboard and, exclusively, the emotive symbols found on your smart phone, e.g. emojis. You are using your mind instead of the smart phone and your mind’s ability to graphically perceive images (e.g. intense daydreams) instead of your eyes on the smart phone screen. The communication between Spirits happens completely inside either a human mind or Spirit’s mind. Hahoo manaho!

By Robert Sissons Another great installment in the series, exploring the ideas of artificial intelligence and a society evolving in the very low gravity of space. This one introduces androids inhabited by immortal human Spirits and robots with and without self awareness. I highly recommended the entire series.

Godfrey Morgan: A Californian Mystery (French: L'École des Robinsons, literally The School for Robinsons), also published as School for Crusoes, is an 1882 adventure novel by French writer Jules Verne. The novel tells of a wealthy young man, Godfrey Morgan who, with his deportment instructor, Professor T. Artelett, embark from San Francisco, California on a round-the-world ocean voyage. They are cast away on an uninhabited Pacific island where they must endure a series of adversities. Later they encounter an African slave, Carefinotu, brought to the island by cannibals. In the end, the trio manage to work together and survive on the island. The novel is a robinsonade—a play on Daniel Defoe's 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe.

Godfrey Morgan (Annotated): A Californian Mystery, by Jules Verne

About the Author Jules Verne was a French writer and pioneer of the science fiction genre through novels like Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty Days, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, and The Mysterious Island. A visionary, Verne wrote about air, space, and underwater travel long before the ability to travel in these realms was invented, and his works remain amongst the most translated, most continually reprinted, and most widely read books of all time. Jules Verne died in 1905 having paved the way for future science fiction writers and enthusiasts.

The primary detractor for me was the underlying romance...it came across as perhaps something Verne was encouraged to add to please his publisher. Not nearly as scientific as some of his works, probably intended for a younger audience. Nonetheless, still pleasing to read.

The incredible tale of a little game that shook the international gaming world--now with new material including a behind-the-scenes look at the sale to Microsoft. For this second edition, the story has been enriched with more Minecraft than ever--a new section describes Minecraft's sale to Microsoft, Notch's less than heartwarming last day in the office, and Mojang's final days of independence. His whole life, all Markus Persson wanted to do was create his own games. Create his own games and get rich. Then in 2009 a strange little project of his quickly grew into a worldwide phenomenon and, in just a few short years, turned its maker into an international icon.Minecraft: The Unlikely Tale of Markus "Notch" Persson and the Game that Changed Everything is a Cinderella story for the Internet age—improbable success, fast money, and the power of digital technology to shake up a rock-solid industry. It's a story about being lost and finding your way, of breaking the rules and swimming against the current. It's about how the indie gaming scene rattled the foundations of corporate empires. But, above all, this is the story of how a creative genius chased down a crazy dream: the evolution of a shy amateur programmer into a video game god.

Minecraft, Second Edition: The Unlikely Tale of Markus "Notch" Persson and the Game That Changed Everything, by Daniel Goldberg, Linus Larsson

Review "You may find this book as addictive as Minecraft."—Slate"At the core of the story of Minecraft is the lesson that success is possible, if you have a good idea and the passion and skill to pursue it. Minecraft is indeed an unlikely tale. That’s what makes it so great, and that’s why this little book will make a terrific holiday gift for the gamer in your life.”—Andrew Leonard, Salon"Minecraft is a beautifully human story...it's well worth a read and offers, at the very least, inspiration, and at the very most, hope."—TechCrunch"This book takes his story and gives you a closer look. You learn about the man behind the game. His childhood, his family, the growth of his company and the lives of the people who work there. It doesn’t just give you the big enormous, glamour-filled cut scenes that you read about on the Internet. This book gives you the pixels, the details."—Book Riot"Suspenseful, grounded, and startlingly relatable. I expected a book about Minecraft; what I got was a compelling story about personal struggle and accomplishment. A perfect gift for Minecraft players, parents of younger players, or anyone interested in indie games."—Game Skinny"Pulls itself along with the narrative compulsion of a tech biography...outlines a cultural phenomenon in ways that even those who've missed out up 'til now can understand."—The Stranger"I have been following Minecraft closely for over three years, and yet this book consistently surprised me with new insights into the game's development.  It focuses on the human story behind all those pixellated blocks. I have a new respect for Notch's accomplishments with Minecraft and for all the hard work that the Mojang'ers have devoted to making the game such a phenomenon. This book offers a fascinating and honest peek into the mind of the man who made Minecraft a reality."—Joel Levin, MinecraftEdu co-creator "This book explores the man behind the game to a depth that you won't, and that you can't, find anywhere else. In this work, Markus "Notch" Persson has revealed everything about the events that led to an international super-phenomenon. The resulting story will fascinate and inspire."—Sethbling, Minecraft video maker From the Hardcover edition.

About the Author

LINUS LARSSON and DANIEL GOLDBERG are two of Sweden’s best-known writers on new technology and the internet. They have been published in the Washington Post and American Computer World, among other places, and quoted by BBC News, the New York Times, and the Sydney Morning Herald. Their first book, Swedish Hackers, was published in 2011 in Sweden. Minecraft, their bestselling English language debut, followed that same year.

A long and steady stream of children, teens, and grown-ups flows through the casino. Their outfits are odd, even for this place. In Las Vegas, you can count on seeing pretty much anything: Elvis impersonators lined up on the sidewalks, gigantic fake-gold lions, drunken weekend revelers, and fountains shooting water hundreds of yards into the air synchronized to the tune of the national anthem. The people streaming through the casino at the HotelMandalay Bay are wearing cardboard boxes on their heads. Some are in full cardboard-box bodysuits with armholes that look uncomfortable and make their elbows stick straight out, like cubist comic-strip characters with the posture of bodybuilders. The cardboard suits they’ve squeezed into are painted in large colorful squares, some green, some black. Others are light blue, brown, and pink. The man at the slot machines, clueless, returns to his game, his cigarette, and his morning cocktail. The cardboard-box people aren’t there to win money. They continue toward the convention facilities that are next to the casino, where in a few minutes they will be cheering as they watch a thirty-two-year-old Swede pull a lever and release the finished version of their favorite game. Minecraft. A computer game as incomprehensible to the uninitiated as it is wildly adored by tens of millions of people. Those who’ve traveled here are among the game’s most devoted fans. Not only have they paid airfare but also, before embarking for Las Vegas, they cut and glued their suits, modeled on the game’s primitive block graphics and shapes. And there are thousands of them, representing a total of twenty-three countries. The youngest is four years old and the oldest is seventy-seven. Of the many parents, some have made the trip just for their kids and are now observing in awe a world their offspring adore but that is alien to them. Others are just as passionate as their children. “We play together constantly,” says a dad with green-tinted hair, wearing a suit sprayed green, his face covered with black bars as he poses for pictures with his identically decked-out son. A few minutes later. The convention hall where we’re seated is the largest at the Mandalay Bay. It’s completely packed and the lights are off. All eyes turn toward the stage and Lydia Winters, who—impossible not to recognize with her short, shocking pink hair—is firing up the audience. “This weekend is going to be awesome!” Giant screens are mounted on both sides of the stage so that those sitting farther back can see what’s happening. They all show Lydia’s happy, glowing, almost cartoon- character-like smile. “So many people’s . . . lives have been changed by this game!” Next to the stage, just to the left, the weekend’s big star is waiting for the signal to step up into the spotlight: Markus Persson, dressed in jeans, well-worn sneakers, and a black polo that’s a bit tight around the middle. As always, he’s wearing a black fedora. Markus doesn’t know what to do with his hands while he waits. He pulls absentmindedly at the hem of his shirt before his hands land in his jeans pockets, thumbs out. There is an ocean of five thousand people seated before him—if seated is the right word, because many of them stand up as the first of Markus’s colleagues arrive onstage. Lydia Winters calls them up and one by one they trudge onstage, shyly wave a little at the audience, and line up beside her. Jens Bergensten—the programmer, tall, lanky, his red ponytail hanging down his back. Carl Manneh—the CEO, who is perfectly okay with Lydia keeping the microphone. Jakob Porser—Markus’s old friend and the cofounder of his company. The graphics guy, Junkboy—no, his real name is never given in public—who leaps onstage wearing a cardboard box on his head and making victory signs for the audience. They’re all Swedish men, all in their late twenties and early thirties, and they all work at Mojang, the company that produces Minecraft. Most days they sit and work at their computers in a shabby apartment on AÅãsoÅNgatan, in Stockholm. But this is no ordinary day. This is the moment when the final version of Minecraft will be released to the public. Which means that until today, the five thousand people in the audience—and several million others around the world—have been playing an unfinished game. A kind of prototype, which has earned Markus close to $70 million and created one of the world’s most admired companies. This is MineCon, the first convention dedicated entirely to Minecraft. The event began as a random idea at the Mojang headquarters on SoÅNdermalm, in southern Stockholm. Markus Persson asked on his blog if anyone would pay ninety dollars to go to a Minecraft convention in Las Vegas. Within a few weeks more than 43,000 people said they would, and the Mandalay Bay was booked. The hotel is a forty-four-story monumental monstrosity built entirely of gold-tinted glass. In its twenty-two restaurants, smoke-filled poker dens, and meandering indoor malls, you can easily spend several days without leaving the hotel—exactly as intended. As a rule, casinos in Las Vegas have no windows or clocks, so that gamblers will continue to feed money into the machines throughout the night. The desert gambling mecca is no place for people with regular circadian rhythms. The coming days will be an unparalleled spectacle, bizarre for those unfamiliar with gaming conventions in general and especially so for those who don’t know Minecraft in particular. People will line up for hours to get Markus’s autograph. A costume contest will nearly degenerate into a riot. Two British men, known by millions of fans from their YouTube channel, will be greeted like celebrities when they play videos on the stage, showing functioning electronic equipment built entirely within Minecraft. It’s not that surprising. Minecraft had grown into an unprecedented success story well before MineCon. Sixteen million players had downloaded the game; morethan four million of them had paid for it. Minecraft had been praised by pretty much every gaming magazine and website in the world. And after all, it’s a game so engrossing that thousands of its most faithful fans have traveled to Las Vegas to celebrate that it is finally finished. We have come here to understand why. We want to ask the costumed men and women what it is about Minecraft that makes them love it more than any other game. And not least of all, we want to know why Markus’s strange creation has earned him such enormous sums of money. For it was, of course, the money that made us take note of Markus Persson in the first place. In late 2010, the unassuming programmer began to pop up in interviews, describing how he’d struck gold with his remarkable game. He always displayed a modest, almost surprised demeanor in the face of his success. He didn’t seem to have any idea what to do with his millions. It looked like an improbable business success, a story of a quick breakthrough and of sudden riches, a shining example of how the Internet can shake the foundations of an industry and create empires within months. But the closer we looked, the more difficult it was to fit Minecraft into the usual frameworks. There was no successful marketing strategy to point to, no business plan that held the secrets to success. There was just one guy with his own, slightly odd idea of what the gaming world needed. The story that emerged had very little to do with polished businessmen and fast deals. Instead, we found an idea rooted in Markus’s childhood, one that could only blossom outside the established framework of the gaming industry. Actually, it’s only now, seated a few yards from the stage, that we fully understand what a star Markus is. Lydia Winters continues her exuberant introduction as we scan the crowd. There’s a woman crying in the row in front of us, which is reserved for special guests. Her cheeks are pierced and she has henna-colored hair and red scars in intricate patterns on her arms. There is also a short girl holding a camera, beaming with pride. Right beside her, there’s an older Swedish gentleman and a lady with shoulder-length, pure-white hair. “This all started because of one person,” says Lydia. If anyone had entered the hall at that moment without knowing what was going on, that person would have guessed she was talking about a prophet. The room erupts in cheers. “I think we need to do better than that. I think we need to chant to get him up onstage.” The whole audience responds to Lydia’s suggestion. The roar is deafening. “Notch! Notch! Notch!” Few people in the room know him as Markus. Down beside the stage, thoughts race through Markus’s head. What should he say? He has always hated speaking in public. On Twitter, he writes for half a million people, but this is different. Onstage, there’s no backing up and no erasing what he’s said. It’s all live, going out directly, both to people on-site and to those following the event online. Forty minutes earlier, he had asked for a drink to calm his nerves. Someone put a glass of vodka in his hand. Now he’s standing there trying to figure out if he’s drunk or not. Shouldn’t he be more nervous? There was something about the stairs too—he shouldn’t look out at the audience when he walks up onstage, someone had said. He might trip. Markus carefully climbs onto the stage. He looks self-conscious, but breaks out in a timid smile when he holds up his hand to wave to the audience. The spotlights seem to blind him completely. Lydia, whose neon-colored hair is accentuated by her all-black clothing, tries to get a few words out of Markus. He says something about “grateful” and “cool.” “I love you, Notch!” someone from the audience cries. Markus squirms. The stage decor consists of paper models and figures resembling those in the game. One life-size human figure looks exactly like Steve, the Minecraft protagonist. There’s a green monster, some boxes, and a column of blocks sporting a lever. The lever’s not actually connected to anything, but the energy level in the room rises when Markus approaches it. “Are you ready for the official release of Minecraaaaaaaaft?” Lydia roars. The audience roars back. A techno beat begins to pump. But Markus hesitates, grips the lever, lets it go again. Camera flashes and the noise level in the hall begin to approach the limits of human tolerance. Finally, Markus gives the lever a push. Fireworks explode and confetti shoots out over the sea of faces. The music gets even louder and the programmers onstage break out dancing, as Minecraft 1.0 is finally released to the world. Markus, off to the side, just nods his head to the beat. At that moment, a technician behind the stage tells us, four thousand people are logging in to play Minecraft. Four thousand per second, that is. Jakob, the old friend from an earlier time, dances up to Markus and receives a hug that lifts him off the floor.Use the link below to read an excerpt of Minecraft! http://issuu.com/sevenstories/docs/pages_from_minecraft

It's short enough to not feel overwhelming but not too short to tell the whole story. The writing is smart without being daunting. It kept my interest till the end with a plot that combined some elements from what would be normally supernatural, but with a scientific slant. It was once said that the supernatural was only unfamiliar science and the author has woven a character that combines the familiar with a new and suspenseful concept. I like the fact that this was a full book and not just a preview of a couple chapters to hook you on buying a trilogy to get a full story with a beginning, middle, and end. Too many digital books are just bait that wastes your time starting a story without a conclusion. The book is intended to be the first in a series and I am looking forwards to reading more adventures of the Dead Girl Saving the Galaxy.

About the Author I am from San Antonio, Texas. I have been writing for five years. I have a great imagination that I am hoping to pass on to all readers of fiction material. Life has been a struggle, but I have always overcome. Writing is an outlet for me to express my thoughts and make things come to life. I hope you enjoy Greed. Look for Chaotic Effects real soon, which is a witch hunt that takes over San Antonio, Texas, and puts MAK in a new character.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A mystery For Small Children By Val An entertaining children’s book that is written for the child. Unlike other children’s books this one operates in the logic that children operate. The story is structured around a problem and the resolution of that problem. The main character is expressing the same questions, views and assumption that the children would express. The illustrations work well with the story and again are logical to the child who is the books intended audience.

My only complaint is that there are more zombie heads than bodies and our slightly OCD son is a bit put off by that! :P Otherwise they are super cute, much bigger than I expected and we are very satisfied.

Knocked around by life—and then knocked up by a man she won’t speak of—Sam Kendall gives her baby for adoption. Envisioning herself a lone cowboy, she avoids any relationships that might risk her heart or cause pain. There’s wonderful fun to be had if you don’t fall prey to the ludicrous notion of true love! Lately, however, Sam is niggled by doubts. She’s not as content as she was. Plus her daughter Aisha has tracked her down—seventeen-years-old and pregnant. Despite misgivings, Sam checks into River’s Sigh Bed-and-Breakfast to meet her. Then widower Charles Bailey, Aisha’s adoptive father, shows up, and Sam can’t control her outrage. What was her sacrifice for? She could’ve raised the kid to follow her stupid footsteps all on her own. And topping it off? Charlie’s a neurotic, stodgy jerk—even if he is ridiculously hot. The longer Sam stays at River’s Sigh, exploring the wild outdoors—and her own inner desires—the more her terror grows. Maybe Charlie isn’t so terrible after all. Maybe his approach to life is actually refreshing. Maybe all this family stuff is something she could get hooked on. Yet they’re opposites in every way, and worse: he’s her biological child’s adoptive dad. A romance between them would be too weird, wouldn’t it? Every part of Sam screams play it safe, run. But what if, in spurning Charlie and Aisha, she’s turning her back on everything she never knew she wanted?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well written, great setting By nandi I enjoyed a lot of things about this book: it is extremely well-written and the gorgeous setting really pops out of the pages. The secondary characters (especially Aisha, the daughter) are really well done. The only reason I give this book three stars instead of 4 is that the main characters simply didn't appeal to me. Sam the heroine is a difficult woman with her faults and I found it hard to warm up to her. However, I can imagine that readers who enjoy character studies might like seeing her development not only throughout this book, but over the series since she appeared in Book 1 also.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another wonderful trip to River’s Sigh B&B. By ButtonsMom2003 This is book 2 in the River’s Sigh B&B series but it can be read as a stand-alone; there is no cliffhanger and there is an HEA. For maximum enjoyment, though, you might want to read Wedding Bands first as it will give you some background on the secondary characters in this story. I loved Wedding Bands and couldn’t wait to read this story but I had to wait because writers just can’t write as fast as I can read. LOL I wasn’t disappointed and this story was worth the wait.As the book opens, Samantha (Sam) is struggling to come to terms with meeting the daughter given up for adoption 17 years ago so that she could have a better life than Sam was in a position to provide. Now Aisha is in the same boat that Sam was, pregnant with the baby’s father nowhere around. And Aisha has questions that she wants Sam to answer.Charles (Charlie) is Aisha’s adoptive father; his wife, Maureen (Mo), died a few years ago. He’s a writer who has lost his muse and hasn’t written anything new since his wife died. He’s been given one final extension on his publishing contract; he must finish a new book within 6 months.More of Sam and Charlie’s backstory unfolds throughout the book. Their first meeting isn’t really a good one. This is definitely not a case of love at first sight. Both Sam and Charlie have demons that haunt them. Charlie is afraid that Sam is trying to take his only remaining family from him. Sam just doesn’t want to get involved with anyone; the daughter she gave birth to or a man.Ev Bishop weaves a moving and complex story. Her writing is wonderfully descriptive; you can see and feel what the characters see and feel. The path to Sam and Charlie’s HEA is a rocky one and the relationship that both of them have with Aisha encounters rough water.Once again, Ev has written a book that contains a minimal amount of strong language. In real life there is cursing; a book completely free of it would be a bit unrealistic to me. She also manages to tell a wonderful love story without any graphic love scenes. I don’t mention these things because I object to them in books, but because I know some readers do. I love alpha males, billionaire stories, military heroes and erotic romance. Still, it’s a nice change to read a book that doesn’t need any of that to tell a great story. Ev’s characters seem like REAL people to me and I loved getting lost in in her writing.I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I’ll try to wait patiently for the next River’s Sigh story.

The important lesson she has gifted us with is that there should always be hope that we will find someone worth loving and to ha By cindyc I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. This is the first book I have read by this author, and I was duly impressed with her style and content. In this book, Ms Bishop has captured the insecurities some women have when they find themselves pregnant and alone, and how this can affect their lives, both at that time and in the future. The important lesson she has gifted us with is that there should always be hope that we will find someone worth loving and to have love for us somewhere along the way.The characters she has portrayed are strong and down to earth, and most of all, real. This is a wonderful love story about a woman who, to all around her, is cold and a loner, yet underneath all of that, is simply a young girl that has been hurt in many ways and doing her best to cope with all of her pain in the only way she knows how. Sam slowly allows her heart to feel everything she has yearned for but was always too afraid to let it happen. Charlie, after loosing his wife more than three years ago, still mourns his loss, but also wishes to leave the feeling of loneliness behind and open his heart to another, collides with Sam in more ways than one. Together, they discover many things about themselves that they dismissed in order to protect their hearts, only to find that if they open up and let their hearts feel, maybe there might be a future full of all of their desires after all.I loved this book. If you are looking for a heartfelt love story, this is definitely one you should read. You won't be disappointed! I know I wasn't.

About the Author Tom was born in Canada, the middle child of five. When he was young he worked as a stable hand and played hockey. He loves animals and is currently owed by a cat named Smudge. Cursed with a high IQ, he studied physics, electronics, chemistry, astronomy and computers in high school and three universities. He has been everything from the aforementioned stable hand to a corporate manager, spending more than nine years as a database consultant. He occasionally conducts private research involving physics and/or electronics and belongs to at least one private think tank. He has done some acting once he 'got out of his shell' and performed at Renaissance festivals for years. He currently works at a job he is not allowed to disclose any details about, makes leather crafts for Renaissance fairs (Frog N Bottle), writes science fiction and occasionally blogs. (amitiel-colloquium). Jack of all trades and master of none. A good background for this kind of writing. His quick wit and charm can make him the life of the party, but he also has no time for aggressive idiots. If you want to talk to him, find his fan page on Face Book. Get to know him. He is truly unique. (From the notes of the late Michael Caliban)

If you want a good, thought provoking story By Dave While most books you can finish in one or two sittings, there is a lot of content packed into this book - If you actually think about what your reading this is not a book you will finish in a day. I found layers upon layers of humor and insinuations that I didnt catch on my first read that repeatedly provoked me to reread several chapters after I figured some things out reading subsequent chapters. If you want a 'light and fluffy read' - this is not your book.If you want a good, thought provoking story, this is a good selection.

My only issue is that if you haven't read the first book recently some of the events in this book are a bit confusing until something jogs your memory of what happened in the first book.

Shakespeare’s King Lear challenges us with the magnitude, intensity, and sheer duration of the pain that it represents. Its figures harden their hearts, engage in violence, or try to alleviate the suffering of others. Lear himself rages until his sanity cracks. What, then, keeps bringing us back to King Lear? For all the force of its language, King Lear is almost equally powerful when translated, suggesting that it is the story, in large part, that draws us to the play. The play tells us about families struggling between greed and cruelty, on the one hand, and support and consolation, on the other. Emotions are extreme, magnified to gigantic proportions. We also see old age portrayed in all its vulnerability, pride, and, perhaps, wisdom—one reason this most devastating of Shakespeare’s tragedies is also perhaps his most moving. The authoritative edition of King Lear from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes: -The exact text of the printed book for easy cross-reference -Hundreds of hypertext links for instant navigation -Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play -Full explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play -Scene-by-scene plot summaries -A key to the play’s famous lines and phrases -An introduction to reading Shakespeare’s language -An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play -Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library’s vast holdings of rare books -An annotated guide to further reading Essay by Susan Snyder The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare’s printed works, and a magnet for Shakespeare scholars from around the globe. In addition to exhibitions open to the public throughout the year, the Folger offers a full calendar of performances and programs. For more information, visit Folger.edu.

King Lear (Folger Shakespeare Library), by William Shakespeare

From Library Journal This marvelous new installation to the revamped "Pelican Shakespeare" series contains both the original 1608 version as big Will wrote it and the 1623 scaled-down and reworked version with which we are all familiar. If that wasn't enough, this edition also sports a scholarly introduction and notes on the texts. All that for less than the price of lunch at McDonald's makes this a remarkable bargain for all academic and public libraries. Don't play the fool; buy this. Review Tragedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, performed in 1605-06 and published in a quarto edition in 1608. One of Shakespeare's finest tragedies, the work displays a pessimism and nihilism that make it a 20th-century favorite. The aging King Lear decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, allotting each a portion in proportion to the eloquence of her declaration of love. The hypocritical Goneril and Regan make grand pronouncements and are rewarded; Cordelia, the youngest daughter, who truly loves Lear, refuses to make an insincere speech to prove her love and is disinherited. The two older sisters mock Lear and renege on their promise to support him. Cast out, the king slips into madness and wanders about accompanied by his faithful Fool. He is aided by the Earl of Kent, who, though banished from the kingdom for having supported Cordelia, has remained in Britain disguised as a peasant. Kent brings Lear to Cordelia, who cares for him and helps him regain his reason. The Earl of Gloucester likewise spurns his honest son, Edgar, and believes his conniving illegitimate son, Edmund. Edmund allies himself with Regan and Goneril to defend Britain against the French army mobilized by Cordelia. He turns his father over to Cornwall--who gouges out Gloucester's eyes--then imprisons Cordelia and Lear, but he is defeated in battle by Edgar. Jealous of Edmund's romantic attentions to Regan, Goneril poisons her and commits suicide. Cordelia is hanged. Lear, broken, dies with her body in his arms. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

The words "quarto" and "folio" refer to the size of the pages in the two editions. Many secondary schools and universities use the quarto edition and a lot is left out of the folio--this version cuts out three hundred lines and adds one hundred new ones. The effect is that it alters the way the characters are shown. If you are reading the play with a class and they have a quarto version, while you are using your trusty teacher's Cambridge, chances are there will be a lot of blank expressions and confusion on their faces. The lines they see will not jibe with yours. The extra articles and class activities are great though--just make sure that if you use the Cambridge, you have your students buy only folio editions.

By Love Thy Enemy I have reviewed several current editions of King Lear and other Shakespearean plays, and was somewhat disappointed in the Folger edition of King Richard III. Nevertheless, the Folger Shakespeare Library edition of King Lear appears to be both accessible and scholarly, with solid reasoning behind its balance of the First Quarto with the First Folio versions of this intense and telling tragedy which we do well to revisit now.My first love will always be Prof. Tucker Brook's redaction in the The Tragedy Of King Lear (The Yale Shakespeare) which against the academic preferences of the time chose the First Quarto over the First Folio. The reasons given by the Late Prof. are compelling, and brought about a generation of conflated editions which combined the two versions. The Quarto came first in publication, of course, and is longer; the Folio is later and does not contain several lines present in the Quarto (I believe about three hundred) yet introduces several (perhaps one hundred) of its own.And so we have a generation of productions which sought to combine the two. For instance we have an early recording of Paul Scofield as the King using a conflated edition and a later recording from his eighties in which only the Folio is used: King Lear (Naxos AudioBooks), following as it states the The Tragedy of King Lear (The New Cambridge Shakespeare), a strictly First Folio presentation. The greatest available recording is of course the Branagh - Gielgud production King Lear (BBC Radio Presents) which must be purchased and repeatedly heard, as it is real. Be certain to get the accompanying brochure.Be that as it may, with this brief description of the history of this tortured text, let me state this present edition from Folger presents solid reasons for its always arbitrary choices. While stating their preference for the First Folio edition, they actually publish here a conflated version, with variant readings in a variety of brackets and poiinted parentheses, with explanations. They have produced therefore something here of great value, yet at a small price and therefore accessible to any classroom, production company or reader. As usual the Folger diverges from the usual Critical Edition format of a third of a page of text, a strip of variorum and a third of a page of notes to the text above. Folger correctly fids more readable a diptych approach. In opening the book to the play, the reader discovers on the right hand page the text and on the left hand page notes. Further specific notes are discovered in the back.In short (if it is not too late to write that) this book may approach any other critical edition, and passes many (let us not mention the unfortunate Joe Pearce's attempt). It presents a thorough examination of Shakespeare's life and theatre, suggestions on reading "his" language, and on reading Lear, this great tragedy for our times. A critical essay by Susan Snyder is included in the back, as well as suggestions for further readings. I find this edition in brief very useful for any new scholar of Lear, and I only wish I could now afford the new King Lear: New Critical Essays (Shakespeare Criticism), or even Critical Essays on Shakespeare's King Lear (Critical Essays on British Literature), and the rest.

Conflation fights back By Jon Chambers Although RA Foakes' Arden3 edition appeared some years after those of Wells & Taylor (Complete Oxford) and Jay L Halio (Cambridge) it did not follow their precedent of issuing separate texts based on Quarto and Folio originals. These early texts (Q 1608 and F 1623 respectively) occasionally offer quite different versions of the play and reconciling them to form a single, coherent whole is a task that is, arguably, less elegant than the dual edition solution. By comparison, Arden's text looks cumbersome, with numerous Q and F superscripts surrounding passages found exclusively in one or other source.Foakes is well aware that his single, 'conflated' text isn't as fashionable as those of the 'revisionists' mentioned above, who believe that the Folio text of Lear represents Shakespeare's revised and final draft, and that modern editors should not pick and mix between Q and F but respect the integrity of the two early sources. While seemingly reactionary, Foakes is in fact countering the new orthodoxy of Halio et al. In his view, their 'dogmatic and purist stance ... abandons the idea of King Lear as a single work of which we have two versions.' He is cautious and level-headed in his approach, aware of the limitations of scholarly speculation and in presenting both Q and F variants he allows the reader to make up her/his own mind.Aside from this central controversy, Arden3 Lear has much to offer. Foakes reminds us of some key differences between the Jacobean world and our own: the original audience, he says, would have tuned in much more readily than us to puns and linguistic innovation; grasped the symbolic difference between crown and coronet; fully understood the distinctions of 'thou' and 'thee'; and recognised the constitutional impossibility of a monarch giving away his kingdom as though it were in his personal gift. The Introduction also presents illuminating discussions on loyalty and disobedience (in which Oswald could conceivably be seen as an ideal servant and Kent a bad one), on the problem of illusion in Gloucester's attempted suicide (IV.6) and on the influence of writers such as Harsnett, Erasmus and Montaine. Plentiful examples of dramatic practice from the play's long stage history are skilfully integrated into these discussions, while its equally rich critical history - especially that of the C20 - is helpfully evaluated. The conclusion is that there can be no return to Christian redemptionist optimism on the one hand or to totally nihilistic interpretations on the other. A recognition of the play's complexity, paradoxes and contradictions have led many to feel, in the words of Richard Fly, 'a deep distrust of all attempts at closure' in King Lear.Ultimately, therefore, this Arden3 is not as radical as rival editions. But it presents an honest, balanced and democratic version of the play in which judgements are occasionally forcefully expressed and occasionally left unresolved. It is comprehensive, authoritative and thought-provoking and should be of value to any serious student.
