This memoir follows a punk rock pioneer on his slide into drug abuse and life as an armed robber, all the way through life in recovery and what it's like to look back on those times, knowing all the while that he is still under the threat of three strikes, a twenty-five-to-life prison sentence waiting. He has no choice but to deal with it all drug free.
During punk rock's heyday, Patrick O'Neil worked at the San Francisco's legendary Mabuhay Gardens. He went on to become the road manager for Dead Kennedys and Flipper, as well as T.S.O.L. and the Subhumans. He holds an MFA from Antioch University Los Angeles.

Review Praise for Gun, Needle, Spoon:"For all the dark, desperate places life has taken this man, he should be dead. That Patrick O'Neil is alive, let alone writing brilliantly is a testament to his tremendous courage, remarkable strength, and the power of redemption against all humanly odds. O'Neil is an extraordinary talent. " James Brown, author of The Los Angeles Diaries"O'Neil might have just founded a new nonfiction genre, Narcotic Noir. This book is a beast!" Joshua Mohr, author of Fight Song"Ever wondered what it would be like to live your wildest fantasy and your darkest nightmare at the same time? In this skillful turn, Patrick O'Neil has saved you the trouble. A ferocious story of survival and redemption, only the beating, honest heart at the core of this sensational book will convince you that every word is true." Jillian Lauren, NYTimes bestselling author of Some Girls: My Life in a HaremPatrick O’Neil is the kind of literary character who doesn’t usually live to tell his own story, who too often has to be rendered and re-imagined by a writer who played it safer from the sidelines. The fact that O’Neila haunted, hunted outlaw, as well an uproariously funny observer of societyis able to give voice to his own complex and dangerous story would be enough to distinguish Gun, Needle, Spoon from most other books. But O’Neil is also the real deal as a writer, full of frenetic energy, unsettling tenderness, and dialogue that sounds like he’s smuggled a tape recorder to hell and back. A one of a kind read.” Gina Frangello, author of A Life in Men"Gun, Needle, Spoon is a wild, tender ride of a memoir that you'll never forget. Fierce, funny, and true to the bone, O'Neil's voice as as real and memorable as they come. Read it." Emily Rapp, author of The Still Point of the Turning World"Patrick O'Neil has managed the unusual feat of writing about a battle scarred life with both toughness and vulnerability, but without posturing or sentimentality. Gun, Needle, Spoon brings to mind Denis Johnson and Jim Carrol without sounding exactly like either. This book has the spare, lean energy of classic crime writing and is both entertaining and full of insight. A great read." Jesse Michaels, author of Whispering Bodies
About the Author Patrick O'Neil is the author of the memoir Hold Up, which was published in France. During punk rock's heyday (1979–83) O'Neil worked at the legendary Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco's premier punk venue. But that was before his life got totally out of control. O'Neil was a heroin addict for eighteen years, incarcerated for two and a half years, went to two long term residential rehabs for a total of three years, worked as a substance abuse counselor for six years, and has been clean off drugs for the last thirteen. He holds an MFA from Antioch University Los Angeles, teaches at a community college, and splits his time between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

A Powerful and Moving Journey By Shehla I don't really know how to review a memoir because it almost feels like reviewing a person's life, but this was really interesting to read and it amazes me how far O'Neil has come in order to be writing about his experiences. One of the things that struck me about this book was the vivid detail and well-crafted language that it was written in. The images and emotions that O'Neil describes are so graphic and strong that at times it almost felt like too much for me to process. The kind of life he was writing about was so hard to imagine for me, but I think his writing gives people a taste of what that must have been like. At the beginning of the book, O'Neil is just starting to use heroin and as the book continues and his habit increases, I found it more and more remarkable that he had pulled himself out of that hole he was digging himself into. This book was profound and really a testament to how someone can bring their life around and power through difficulties. As a book.. By Amazon Customer A Bay Area, punk rock-insider, junkie--with more than a dab of self-hating and bulimia--turns bank robber to support he and his true love, Jenny's, all-consuming dope habit. It's an astonishing story, but it's more than that. Like all good memoirs, the author gives himself to his readers. "Gun, Needle, Spoon" takes you inside the author's guts, holds them all out in the daylight for your observation, and perhaps, judgment. At his best, Mr. O'Neil combines the plain writing and plot-moving style of Augusten Burroughs with the grit and depth of William Burroughs. And Mr. O'Neil can turn a phrase, especially when it comes to his own issues: Body dis-morphia: "... and those unforgiving three-sided dressing room mirrors that sit off to the side of the men's clothing department in repressive institutions like Macy's and Sears." The hard-selfishness of junkie life: "Hell, Mikey's better off without her. With Darlene gone, it's one less arm to feed." Fellow addicts of another kind: "I try to avoid speed freaks--their nervous energy f up my high. There I am ready to nod out in opiated euphoria and they're yapping away a mile a minute about f-all while jerking around like an epileptic in a fit."Bravo

The pace is so quick that the very first sentence grabs you and things don't let up after that. A very good portrait of the punk scene back in the day, what it's like to be a junkie, and so much more that I can't do this book justice. It is an amazing tale written by an incredible man. Kudos to you, Mr. O'Neil. I hope this will not be your last effort, but if it is, you have still left one hell of a great legacy.I encourage everyone to read this book. It's a story you will never forget, and it's all true.
