I loved learning about the favelas and drug trafficking activities in Rio de Janeiro, but this book was much more than that. The story told within it revolves around the rescue of a kidnapped journalist and his best friends effort to rescue him. It also delves into the complex relationship between civil and military authorities in the city. There are many additional twists and turns that will keep you up at night, but I will let you read for yourself. Don't miss out on reading this unique book. It will really give you a first-hand account of activities within the favelas of Rio. I loved it.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. love and adventure By The Bad Sally Operation Archangel is full of facts that were collected during the years 2011 and 2012, when Fernando Montenegro was commander of a unit of Operation Arcanjo (Archangel) occupation and subsequent pacification of the complex of Penha and Alemão, the headquarters of the criminal group Comando Vermelho, in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. The story line involves the Brazilian Military's complex relationship with the civil police, the citizens, corruption, conflict, love and adventure. This book has all the aspects of a great page turner and will give you insight to the soul of Brazil.

I read it in the portuguese verion and it brought memories of the city I grew up - Rio de Janeiro - along with teaching me new information of my own home town. Great story line involving Brasilian Military's complex relationship with the civil police, the general citizenry (with specific emphasis on the Carioca way), corruption, conflict, love, sex and adventure. A very good read if you know or want to get to know some of Rio's many facets.
