Henty, has an interesting and oft used method of writing a novel while incorporating history and facts. He employs the well known story of a rabid dog attacking a French boy, employing his leading English boy, Harry. If memory serves there is a statue commemorating this event, but I suspect that the real hero was French and a focal point of inspiration to Louis Pasteur. The coincidence of the English boy named "Harry" has not gone unnoticed! The story is more interesting in that the author uses day-to-day experiences inside the "terror" that we would not otherwise know or even consider. For example, the general attitude of the aristocracy was to assume the "trouble" would pass and leave them in peace and the arrogant attitude that they should venture to Paris to assist the King! There will come a time in the late 18th century when all people of France were at risk of "the lady" with the blade. All in all, this is not only an enjoyable novel but a step into the past history of true terror. Well worth the read in the 19th century and 21st as well.

Henty once again spins his magic to make another major historical event understandable to the young reader--and does so in the kind of truly wonderful prose that is so very rare in today's literature for kids. No wonder this author is at the top of so many reading lists.

This is one of my favorite stories by Henty. If more young people spent more of their time reading books like this one then chivalry and respect for women might be more common.Boys would again act like gentlemen and girls like ladies.Heroism would be part of life and not just a curious trait of characters in old books. The characters in this story are quick thinking, brave, and honorable. This tale takes place during one of the most frightening times in history yet the character of our heroes gives us a happy ending. This book is well worth your time.

As an artist, David Bowie is widely considered a "chameleon," shedding one persona to create a new one and thus staying popular, relevant and compelling. In reality, Bowie is able to work with the resources around him to create something new, causing many to see him as a sort of lone artist rather than a collaborator in the creation of his own celebrity.

Since mid-career, Bowie has presented himself as a figure in darkness, progressively more hidden. He requires an audience for his continued celebrity but works against that audience in the creation--or rather the destruction--of his star image. This tension is made clear in his 1995 album 1. Outside, which has him performing for an audience while simultaneously shunning them. This book explores Bowie's negotiation of his celebrity during his later career, with particular focus on 1. Outside, an album symptomatic of deep-seated societal and personal anxiety.

PDF Ebook The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell

Short and sweet, Richard Connell's masterpiece reads as well as it did when it was written 86 years ago. A model in lean prose that sticks to the story without unnecessary embellishment, "The Most Dangerous Game" manages to expose weighty issues of war, ecology, and especially human nature that remain relevant today. Yet there is no preaching here - simply a well-told tale that will be enjoyed by grade school students as easily as adults. And if the brevity leaves you wanting, this little gem set the foundation for decades of authors and screenwriters who've picked up on the basic man-hunter theme. At half the price of a movie, "The Most Dangerous Game" is worth a detour back to one of the key building blocks of modern pop fiction. Winner of the 1924 O. Henry Memorial Prize for Best Short Story (the Pulitzer Prize for stories) The Most Dangerous Game, also known as "The Hounds of Zaroff," is quite a thrilling and twisting read, a work consisting of approximately 34 pages, give or take, depending on the edition you choose from. In the dead of night, two men, Whitney and Sanger Rainsford (no relation), who are both avid hunters, are on a yacht. Sanger is a noted author on hunting and somewhat of a playboy. The two are looking at what appears to be an isolated island ominously nicknamed Ship-Trap Island. While looking out, they discuss the game of hunting and briefly the ethics of it, analyzing the concept of fear and death that animals must surely sense when they are caught in the range of the hunter's guns. While Whitney is more sympathetic and open-minded of what the animals must sense, Sanger is indifferent, saying only, ""...Who cares what a jaguar feels. Bah! They've no understanding." It is a belief he'll come to regret; they also talk about the territory's supposed evil reputation by way of sailor lore. With the discussion coming to a close, Whitney turns in, thus leaving Rainsford alone on the deck. Mulling over things, Rainsford hears shots coming from the island, and while straining to see better, he loses his balance and falls overboard. Via the current and his own swimming ability, he lands on Ship-Trap Island without anyone on the boat noticing his disappearance. On the island, he encounters the suave yet diabolical General Zaroff, a man whose passion for hunting surpasses that of his own. However, Zaroff does not hunt animals of the four legged variety. Staying in his opulent and well furnished island manor, Rainsford becomes well rested and unknowingly fattened up, all prep work done by Zaroff who wants his preys to be well nourished and fully energized for the chase; as Zaroff explains his joy at hunting humans to Rainsford, he becomes deathly ill at the inhumanity of it all. Zaroff simply delights in pursuing people who will use their ingenuity, wits and determination to survive. "Throw-away" people, as he sees it, will not be missed, for they were created for the pleasure of the strong. He looks at people the way hunters look at animals. It is just that black and white with nothing in between. Being a hazy witness to one of these hunts, Rainsford immediately wants off the island, but it's just not that easy, for he has to partake of the horror like all the others if he wants his freedom. And chances are, with Zaroff's acute hunting ability, he will not leave, for Zaroff's hunting record is 100% perfect, no losses whatsoever. Can Rainsfords survive the three days of open hunting with a maniac who knows all and assumedly sees all? That's the thing. The Most Dangerous Game was a thought-provoking read, because it can be applied to all aspects of hunting and trying to quench the endless thirst of that which we most want, be it power, materialism, sex, vanity, money, a laundry list attached to the human psyche that can be endlessly yearning and strategizing but never fulfilled.

The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell

About the Author Richard Edward Connell Jr. (1893 – 1949) was an American author and journalist, probably best remembered for his short story "The Most Dangerous Game". Connell was one of the most popular American short story writers of his time. He had equal success as a journalist and screenwriter and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1942 for best original story.

From AudioFile Ziggurat Productions employs multiple voices to tell this haunting classic short story about a hunter becoming the hunted. Accomplished big-game hunter Sanger Rainsford is washed ashore on a South American island owned by General Zaroff, a maniacal sportsman whose quarry is the two-legged kind. When Rainsford finds himself the prey of the madman, he must kill or be killed. The readings are quite good, and the story is enhanced by appropriately menacing music. The script sticks fairly close to the original tale, with only minor enhancements and additions, and a shift in the narrative voice. There are plenty of other reviews available concerning the content of the story, so I concern myself primarily with the presentation on the kindle.Having first tried the other version available, The Most Dangerous Game - New Century Edition with DirectLink Technology, and finding that it had an unwelcome abundance of typos, I downloaded this version instead. Unlike the other version, this version actually breaks the text into paragraphs, this very welcome and make the story much more pleasant to read. There are two notes built in to the story as editorial comments on what certain words mean. Although these comments are unnecessary to the understanding of the story, they are not unwelcome. The biggest plus is that I haven't noticed typos in this version like I did in the other version.Overall, I think formatting is well done and works perfectly for the kindle. If you want to purchase this story for your kindle buy this version.P.S. There is another reviewer of the kindle edition that mentions some of the text disappearing. I have not experienced this problem. It's possible this problem did exist and was fixed, but the problem isn't there anymore.

By A Customer The short story is out of print, but can be found in:The Norton Introduction to Literature Fiction Sixth Edition / W.W. Norton & Company Available through www.amazon.comI was required to read this story as part of my mandatory college curriculum. I found the story very intriguing and spotted with divine wisdom. The story views hunting and obsession in a new light. The story was written in 1924, but still feels modern showing the author's stretch for new thinking. I do not find the author's prose to be very smooth or grammatically perfect, but he does have something to say.If your looking for a good collection of short stories to read, I recommend reading 'The Norton Introduction to Literature Fiction'

How does an underground oddity become a cultural phenomenon? For over 40 years, the rock band Kiss has galvanized the entertainment world with an unparalleled blitz of bravado, theatricality, and shameless merchandizing, garnering generations of loyally rabid fans. But if not for a few crucial months in late 1975 and early 1976, Kiss may have ended up nothing more than a footnote. Shout It Out Loud is a serious examination of the circumstance and serendipity that fused the creation of the band's seminal work, Destroyer including the band's arduous ascent to the unexpected smash hit, Alive!, the ensuing lawsuits between its management and its label, the pursuit of the hot, young producer, a grueling musical "boot camp," the wildly creative studio abandon, the origins behind an iconic cover, the era's most outlandish tour, and the unlikely string of hit singles. Extensive research from the period and insights into each song are enhanced by hundreds of archived materials and dozens of interviews surrounding the mid-'70s era Kiss and its zeitgeist. New interviews with major principals in the making of an outrageously imaginative rock classic animate this engaging tale.

Shout It Out Loud: The Story of Kiss's Destroyer and the Making of an American Icon, by James Campion, KISS

Review ''If you are a hardcore KISS fan like myself, this book is a must, because there is not a stone unturned capturing this era of the band. What Shout It Out Loud does so well is it covers everything from the record jacket and cover to hearing from the people who worked on the artwork; the detail James Campion paid to this is really remarkable. The book is just phenomenal. It's a hell of a read.'' - Eddie Trunk (Trunk Nation Sirius XM/ Founder and co-host of VH1's That Metal Show) ''Shout it Out Loud by James Campion is more than a record of a moment in rock and roll history, it is a brilliant apprentice handbook on how to handle a rock-band, build a recording career, create a particular sound and all the necessary elements that are needed to do that. You are there in the studio, at the control board, fiddling with the amps, placing the microphones, hunting for a calliope, dealing with massive egos... And by the end you know exactly why he has a 382 page book, because that it what it takes to get it all down, every last nuance, every fact checked in the making of an iconic album. Just think of what Campion could do with Pet Sounds...'' - Sam Hawksmore, Hackwriters.com ''Shout It Out Loud begins as a forensic examination of KISS's Destroyer, but it ends up as more than a book about an album, KISS, or even the metal tributary of '70s rock. It's a testament to music, how it's engineered, and how social phenomena crystallize and snowball; it's about youth, collective archetypes, and tapping into them; it's about America the Disaffected, entertainment, pop culture, and escapism. And if you heard KISS growing up and still remember shrink-wrapped albums and cover art worthy of a wall, it's about you.'' - Vincent Czyz - Art Fuse Magazine ''The making of Destroyer reveals much about the band and its members. From the drinking and drug use of two members and the unexpected tea totaler to the songs that made it to the album, Campion writing and history will capture any fan's attention....Shout It Out Loud is an excellent look at the evolution of one of the most recognizable bands in rock history.'' --Evilcyclist's Blog''Author, James Campion, spoke to pretty much everyone involved in the production side of the album from Ezrin himself to engineers, managers and Ken Kelly; he cleverly puts multiple accounts of certain stories down which sometimes conflict but leaves it to the reader to decide who they want to believe. The coda of the book was that the album eventually became a massive hit (up to four million sold) and put KISS on the map for the next forty years. After digestion of this detailed and surely definitive book, the net impression was that nearly everyone came out of the 'Destroyer' sessions for the better.'' - Fireworks Magazine A detailed - and then some - account of the landmark album that ensured Kiss would be rocking and rolling for longer than just ''all nite.'' --Macomb Daily News''Campion's recounting of the Destroyer days...is rich and multi-voiced...Campion takes care to separate KISS as 'The Act' (his term) in image and career path to fame and fortune from the musical development of Destroyer, though they were always kissin' cousins. ''Destroyer is the indisputable KISS mission statement the realization of a dream,'' he writes in the book's foreword. ''[It] is '70s rock: loud, yes, and decadent, you bet, but mostly it is pompous, weird, and fantastical...It is a cartoon fantasy's parody of excess.'' And with Shout It Out Loud, current and former soldiers in the KISS Army can find out all they care to on the making of their masterpiece.'' --Houston Press

By Benjamin Jones I have read 95% of the books on KISS, all the member bios, Kiss and Sell, Alive Forever, Nothing To Lose, and many more and I can honestly say that this book now joins Kiss and Sell and Kiss Alive Forever as the best Kiss books I have read. The writing immediately stood out as intelligent and the introduction describing the author as a 13 year old boy opening the vinyl of Destroyer was a phenomenal opening and sucks you from the very beginning. The book is exhaustive in its scope as he tackles not only the making of the album but it's cultural impact and how it was integral to Kiss becoming the global force it is today. He examines every aspect of the album from what microphones were used to how the radio PR guys at Casablanca made Beth into a hit single. On top of the book being extremely well written, the research into the book was obviously exhaustive. He was able to get interviews with the key players such as producer Bob Ezrin, engineers Jay Messina and Corky Stasisk, artist Ken Kelly and many more which is a testimonial to his skills as people like Ezrin don't give interviews to just anyone. I thought I knew everything there was to know about KISS but I learned a lot. The beginning of the book may be redundant for hardcore Kiss fans in which he brings readers up to speed on how Kiss formed and what led up to the making of Destroyer in 1976.I didn't know what to expect with this book but it blew away my expectations. I couldn't put the book down and it was easily the most intelligent take on Kiss I have ever read. For those that are interested not only in the music but about what Kiss symbolized culturally in the 70's and its lasting legacy, this book is for you. I can only hope that the author has plans for another Kiss book in the pipeline as I really enjoyed this. Highly recommended to not only Kiss fans but music fans in general.

By RB5150 For a book that was supposed to be about the recording of the Destroyer album, the author doesn't even get to talking about it until a hundred pages into it. There's plenty of background on KISS' first three albums and Alice Cooper. It's extremely annoying how the author keeps referring to the band as THE ACT throughout the book.Where many of the other reviewers praise the author's attention to details, I think he misses the mark as if he doesn't know who his audience is. For example, I was expecting to read more about the friction between Ace and Peter with Gene and Paul. About how Ace didn't end up playing on the Detroit Rock City solo. Instead I'm reading through what sounds like a technical manual from an engeer about mic placement and techniques, to the level of granularity where they are talking about microphone models. I don't really care if they were using Sony model mics that were retired.Though this is book about the recording of an album, unless you're a studio musician or trying to recreate the process on your own, you don't really need to hear about the engineers take on compression versus distortions, versus overdrive. The laymen can get the paragraph long version and be ok, reading about it for pages is overkill.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. One of the Best Books About Kiss Out There By Vincent Czyz I haven’t been a KISS fan for decades. It’s something that I left behind, probably with my cap and gown after graduating from college. I still enjoy hearing the occasional KISS tune on the radio, but I no longer have any of the albums I bought (vinyl of course), and I only have three or four of their later hits (e.g., “Heaven’s on Fire”) on my MP3. So I wasn’t expecting much when I picked up “Shout it Out Loud.” To say I was “pleasantly surprised” is a serious understatement. This is one of the best pieces of music journalism I’ve come across—easily better, for example, than Dave Marsh’s Springsteen bio, “Born to Run” (I am still a Springsteen fan). Yes, everything a KISS fan could want surrounding the band and the making of the Destroyer album is in Campion’s book, but there’s much more. Campion is a hands-on writer whose sentences reflect the energy of the music and capture the mood of the ’70s. He covers the band’s beginnings and the alchemical reactions between the members. He takes you behind the scenes, and he quotes just about everybody involved—PR guys, Casablanca execs, sound engineers, DJs, production wizard Bob Ezrin, other music critics, even the guy who came up with the title for the album. Along the way, we get nonstop drama—Hollywoodesque but all the better because it’s actual history—of how two guys (Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons) playing for loose change on a corner in Greenwich Village put together one of the most successful rock bands of all time. What I particularly love is that Campion is an apt cultural commentator and analyst. He makes incisive observations about the music itself, the ’70s, the industry, American culture, capitalism, e.g.: “At its artistic root,” he writes, “[KISS] was a postmodern Howitzer blast through the heart of 1960s existentialism. […] This was shameless exhibitionism.” And Campion has a journalist’s nose for a story. There are half a dozen sidebars in here that I found riveting, such as how Kim Fowler got two songs onto Destroyer; how Ken Kelly, a comic-book cover artist and nephew of legendary fantasy artist Frank Frazetta, got the nod to do the cover; how Alice Cooper impacted rock music, pop culture, and KISS itself. In other words, this book goes much deeper than the making of the Destroyer album or of an iconic rock band; it’s a work of cultural commentary that reminds me in certain respects of Greil Marcus’s “Lipstick Traces”—and that’s about the highest compliment I can give a book written by a music critic.

Donovan "Doc" O'Connell and business school classmate Bev Patterson develop a unique strategy to get Bev's diamond mining, half billion dollar inheritance out of Zimbabwe, where currency restrictions prohibit the transfer of large amounts of capital. Their plan involves a resort/campus in Zimbabwe, a five-star hotel in the USA and offices in Hong Kong and Silicon Valley. Thailand and Cambodia provide the backdrop for a mysterious kidnapping that threatens to destroy Doc's plans. A fast moving tale of international business and adventure. A "feel good" novel intended to entertain with alternating elements of mystery, love and liberal doses of humour.

Great Summer Read By Peter Donovan Great summer read, never a dull moment in this zipping around the world adventure, light hearted feel good story where hardly nothing ever goes wrong, had me laughing out loud at some of the characters and names, jokes, cool story line. I suffered jet lag from staying up late finishing the story. Mr. Rowe got this so correct there is even a virgin in the story. WOW!
