This causes astronaut Travis Hill to take extreme measures by leaping out of the craft and into an escape pod, effectively becoming the first astronaut ever to jettison to safety from space and make a reentry back to Earth.This amazing starting sequence in the novel, Starfire by Paul Preuss, hooked me straight in and kept me turning the pages, wanting to know what would happen the thrilling moment next. Unfortunately, as action-packed as the opening was, the rest of Starfire left me wanting.Several years after Travis Hill's amazing escape from the solar flare accident and his daring descent back to Earth, he has been deemed unfit to go back to space. But when he hears about an asteroid that makes a near pass to Earth and is heading towards the Sun, he spies an opportunity to get back to space. With NASA launching the brand new spaceship, the titular Starfire, very soon, plans are made to readjust the spaceship's maiden voyage with an ambitious mission to land on the asteroid before it heads into a closed loop near the sun.The premise of Starfire may remind you a little of the film Armageddon but this novel was first published in 1988, ten years before Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck ever went to space to the sound of Aerosmith. Also, Starfire, being a hard SF novel, likes to think it's a little brainier than Michael Bay's popcorn fare. And truly, the science and realism that permeates the novel is a joy for those who prefer their science fiction leaning towards science more than fiction. It is to the author's credit that all that science and realism does not get in the way of the story and actually enhances it.Where the author fails is in the characters and the extraordinarily slow pace of the plot. The characters are either forgettable and especially in the main character's case, unlikeable. Travis Hill recalls one of a cowboy from Texas and retains all the negative stereotypes of one -- mainly a misogynistic white male. In fact, the cowboy elements were so strong that half the time I wondered whether I was reading a Louis L'amour western or a scifi opera.The plot is simple enough, and the author possibly realized that this meant he had to pad his novel so that he could make his wordcount. And so every time things start to get a little exciting, we are thrown into a pointless flashback of a character. The flashbacks were so many to the point of annoyance; I kept wanting to shout at the book, "Get on with it already!"I really wanted to like this book, I really did. The premise was sound and normally, anything with spaceships in it would get me hot and bothered, but this one left me as cold as a floating rock in space.This book review was possible thanks to an ARC provided by NetGalley.

It does drift into ‘hard’ sci-fi, but over all, it was an easy read, and ‘soft’ sci-fi fans won’t get bored.There were a few dated references, but that’s to be expected for a thirty-year-old novel. Another aspect that frustrated me was about three or four lengthy flashbacks that just didn’t seem to help the story. I can appreciate the author trying to fill in the back-story to a few characters, but they derailed the story. I found myself angrily swiping pages to get through the boring back-story. On the final flashback, I just skimmed until it was obvious the flashback was over. It seemed almost as if the flashbacks were shoehorned in to reach a word or page count.I really love the paperback cover. It fits the story perfectly and makes sense during the read. I don’t know if the art didn’t have the proper license, but the new electronic edition art, while it conveys that this is a sci-fi space adventure, just doesn’t work as good as the 1988 cover. (I grin when I see the 80s-style title font.)I’m not too worried about spoiling a thirty-year-old book, so I’ll say that this space disaster is reminiscent of movies like Armageddon or Gravity.I’m on the fence on this one in terms of star rating. It’s a great read, but the flashbacks just made me angry. If I did half stars, I’d say 3.5 stars, but for the purpose of Amazon and Goodreads, I’m gonna award it that extra half and say four-stars. If you’re a sci-fi fan, you’ll like this book.Received a copy for free from NetGalley

This is actually an older novel written in 1988, however it is not dated. Difficult to imagine but when this was written you did not have mobile phones, Ipads, Kindles or laptop computers. So the author has shown great skill in detailing this solar adventure in a believable way. The main character is a veteran astronaut using his fame and buliding his reputation as the premier person with knowledge of asteroids. Appearance of a freak asteroid gives him the opportunity for a last trip into space. It is an excellent book but I have withheld my fifth star because he used flashbacks and bios to give the background on the other characters. This disrupts the flow of the book and if detail was deemed essential then it could have handled better, but who am I ? do I write thrilling Sci-Fi novels?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. C.E. Baker hits the mark in his first novel 5/5 By Rosalind Gale As far as I am aware this was C.E. Baker's first published book - and on the compelling evidence provided by "Unity and the King" - now retitled "The Crown of Distant Dreams" - he is clearly both a talented and darkly interesting writer. The novel holds a number of surprises, none more so than the sneaky and skilful way the author draws the reader into a far more shadowy world than perhaps they might have anticipated - particularly given the somewhat `easy going' synopsis that only hints at what lies ahead - don't be fooled by this synopsis; what awaits is, for the most part at least, an exciting tale of escape - both physical and mental, that leads to a sort of redemption and reckoning - not just for "Unity" and "the King" - but for many of the characters the reader encounters along the way. The early action switches between 1954 and 1978 before settling in 1978. (And for an older reader such as me it was great to see cultural-music references such as Blondie and the Police given a shout out.) The upshot of this is that the novel is lent a sort of 'old school' rawness (free of mobile phones and laptops) reminiscent of Allan Campbell McLean or David Line. The reader is drawn easily into the latter era particularly and this gives the characters a freshness and vulnerability, and to some degree an innocence, that perhaps one does not see in contemporary novels of this ilk. After the initial framing of setting and character the author keeps the action at a good pace throughout which results in an exciting, and without giving too much away, a thrilling, not to mention shocking, final few chapters. The novel is not a particularly long one and this too is a plus as it makes the whole thing more absorbing and claustrophobic. An interesting side point is that the novel also, in a quasi-metaphorical way, has something to say about, shall we say, 'religious upbringings.' And again, without giving away plot secrets, the idea that, as a child, we are told certain things that we have no choice but to believe, and in many cases readily accept, is explored and, eventually, confronted. If I were asked to describe the novel in a sentence or so, I would say it lives somewhere between The Night of the Hunter and a macabre Stig of the Dump. I thoroughly recommend this book and, furthermore, I look forward to more literary offerings from the author. NB. Baker's new book is out now on Amazon and is titled "The Lostman Woods." I shall read and review directly.

About the Author Jules Verne was a French writer and pioneer of the science fiction genre through novels like Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty Days, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, and The Mysterious Island. A visionary, Verne wrote about air, space, and underwater travel long before the ability to travel in these realms was invented, and his works remain amongst the most translated, most continually reprinted, and most widely read books of all time. Jules Verne died in 1905 having paved the way for future science fiction writers and enthusiasts.

This is really the second half of "The Mysterious Island" By banjoist I had thought this might be a sequel to "Mysterious Island," but it's just the second part of that novel. I suggest you download the free copy of "Mysterious Island" and get both parts together.That said, this has always been a favorite of mine.

This is only the last 1/3 of "The Mysterious Island" By Librarian Jules Verne originally wrote his wonderful novel "The Mysterious Island" in 3 parts, each published separately to appease eager fans while the full book was still a work-in-progress. Part-1 is "Dropped From the Clouds," Part-2 is "Abandoned," and Part-3 is this, "The Secret of the Island." Once the novel was completed, there was (and still is) no longer any need for the separate components of it. Therefore, I heartily recommend you read the entire novel (containing all 3 parts) which (like this) is also a public domain freebie. In fact, there are TWO such free versions of "The Mysterious Island" in the Kindle Store, the British translation by W.H.G. Kingston (search by: Free books Verne Mysterious Island) and an American translation by Stephen W. White (search by: Free books Verne Ile Mysterieuse. English). It might even be fun to read and compare both of them -- but either one will give you the completed story in all 3 parts. Sadly, the actual secret referred to in the title of this portion is often revealed in blurbs and reviews for this work, thus spoiling the mystery, but the full book still remains great fun to read.Since this is only 1/3 of the complete 5-star classic, I have rated it only 1/3 as much (1.66 stars which rounds off to 2).FYI: Newer, corrected, slightly fuller, unexpurgated translations of "The Mysterious Island" are available, one by Jordan Stump from Modern Library/Random (and currently only $2.99) and another by Sidney Kravitz from Wesleyan (costing considerably more). Both are excellent, but skip the spoiler-filled introductions until after you have read and enjoyed the book.

It was an idea of Benjamin Franklin’s that I followed, being enthusiastic for a week and then have another attribute the next week, but I really like the way the author Tom Miles structure his transformational suite of attitudes, ideals and habits that will, I’m sure, make your life so much more. So, I’ve started this new change in my life and am really enjoying it even though I’m only on the second week. I can tell though that it is something I’m going to really enjoy. Reading through all 52 weeks, there is nothing that I see harmful in any way, just good positive stuff. I already have a daily diary that is already set up for the month and I’ve added the next four weeks of the program. The first week is something I’ve already been working on: “Lesson 1: Live in the moment. I’m being present which is the only control we have, in the here and now.” Letting go of the past especially those bad things that happened is part of it. In coming weeks I’ll have the Spirit of gratitude, Do something that scares me and spend the week Apologizing, another easy one for me.

The Author has given the week by week steps to follow. This is the best thing because no one can change his/her habit in few days. Once we discard of the physical and mental clutter, we are free to explore life and all it has to offer. This book will surely gives you the basic idea on how to live a simple and happy life. The best to use this book is to read week by week plan and then slowly you will start feeling the change. I got the benefit from this book.

Several habits and attitudes in order to be successful are shown. It is of great importance to set first the mindset, followed by several aspects such as spiritual growth. In this book, the things you need to do every week that will pass is elucidated. This sum ups to almost a year process but even though I’ve just read this book, I am very certain that my life will transform and I will have a life full of happiness.
